I had been playing golf at Turnberry & my playing partner recommended we try this restaurant as he'd been here before & it was excellent. I selected from the daily menu, had "Hot salted chicken" & chilli salad dressing & it was delicious, for my main meal I had braised beef on mashed potatoes, with side potato & veg, again an excellent meal. Service was quick, attentive and customer driven, a very pleasant atmosphere too, could not praise it highly enough ....and can't wait to be back in the area again, definitely a hidden gem. X

I took my husband here for his 82nd birthday. This is his favourite restaurant in Ayrshire. Here's why: Wilding's is a very pleasant environment, relaxing and comfortable. The menu is very extensive, and every dish that we have eaten over the years that we have been coming here, has been beautifully cooked, with lovely flavours. The staff are very friendly and professional. You are made to feel welcome and valued, particularly by the owners. Today was no exception. My husband had lamb fillet, which is his all time favourite. He followed this with what he described as a truly great apple crumble. At our age, we are not big eaters, and we both go into training when we are coming here. My husband just loves your starters, (and the mains AND the sweets.) He has to make painful decisions about what to order. He says that, if a la carte service, or a tasting selection was available, he might sometimes have two starters and a sweet , or starters and a small main course. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit today, and we will certainly look forward to our next visit. Well Done!

Perfect meal. First visit but will definitely be back. It's what a restaurant should be like. Friendly efficient staff that look like they actually want to be there. All food cooked fresh and piping hot tastes amazing and served on a roasting hot plate. Many restaurant serve good food on a cold plate resulting in stone cold food in minutes.

We had booked a table for a family Sunday lunch, and had to eat a little later than we would have preferred, but we had a table by a window, with a nice view. Wildings has an extensive menu, augmented by a list of "specials", so it offers very good choice and no-one had any problems selecting their food. Portions were a good size, and nicely presented. My lamb fillet main course was cooked just right, and the selection of vegetables was good. There is a full bar, so a good selection of drinks, including beers. The restaurant was very busy, and had a good atmosphere. Service was a bit patchy, possibly because they were so busy. We specifically asked for the childrens' meals to be brought first, because the kids were hungry, but they actually came last, which led to a bit of upset at our table! I didn't bother waiting for staff to bring us the bill, but just went up to the till to pay.

I’d told a friend that we were staying in a cottage in Maidens and was told that we had to eat at Wildings. The feedback will be a big thank you, and having reserved on our first night we quickly made another booking for later in the week to end our holiday before returning home. The Monday night was fairly quiet but Thursday was packed but there was no difference in the quick, friendly and efficient service with piping hot food of excellent quality and value. Extensive set menus with a small number of additional specials and a great view over to Arran

Desserts were Rhubarb crumble with custard , Panna cotta served with ice cream and homemade shortbread , Delicious Well done to the chef Service was efficient, restaurant was spotless , tables laid and proper napkins If I was to be picky it would be to say decor is abit dated but that doesn’t take away from our beautiful meal and will certainly recommend it .

I’ve been to this lovely Wilding's Hotel & Restaurant a number of times over the years, being myself local to the very nearby Culzean Estate, and indeed this very delightful picturesque village of Maidens Carrick South Ayrshire KA19 9NR. We last attended Wilding's as a family together, celebrating the happy engagement of my son to his bride to be Lisa, and that was on at their Valentine's Dinner Night dinner special, where their fillet steaks were also outstanding, cooked to perfection as ever by the Wilding's professional cookery team. I had more recently a ‘chance’ lunch encounter at this Wildings Restaurant, they nonetheless still offered a totally fine dining experience with both A la Carte, and in house special menus’. I would recommend the smoked haddock au gratin starter, given it was much better than the equivalent dish served at the Waterfront Restaurant in nearby Ayr. I was very slightly reticent about returning to this fine, long established harbour restaurant, given the somewhat rather negative comments from my predecessor Tripadvisor Patron's, and on two separate occasions. But in my own subjective opinion, indeed everything was first class, from the disabled access [being a disabled patron myself] to the sheer quality of service/fine cuisine. The restaurant even had access ramps to accommodate my mobility scooter, as well as nearby disabled parking adjecent, and with EV charging [22kw]. I also anjoyed free Wi-Fi with a strong signal. They even had a postbox to send postcards given the Wildings Hotel & Restaurant actually overlooks a quaint, picturesque, ancient, but nevertheless working leisure harbour. Talking together Tripadvisor patrons’, I’ve always highly rated the local fine dining establishment inclusive of accommodation options too [if required of course], a well stocked bar, and catering for most palates’ My advice to fellow Tripadvisor patrons though, would be to most certainly book in advance, especially during the summer months given It's obviously a popular tourist destination. Especially considering the nearby town attractions; for example Girvan, Ayr, Prestwick and last but by no means least Dunure [Famous for its ‘draw’ to film producers filming the likes of Outlander, Taggart and many other film/tv programme sets for example Chanel 4s Deadwater Fell]. Not to mention the song promoting ‘‘bonny Dunure’ with its ancient picturesque dovecot, labyrinth and of course Castle steeped in history/skulduggery. On the subject of Castles’ the equally majestic so-called ‘Jewel in the Crown’ [Culzean Castle & Country Park] of Scottish castles remains only a very short drive away. As is Glasgow Prestwick airport. Culzean Castle’s also a proven ‘Magnet’ for both Scottish, UK and indeed worldwide tourists alike. My main dish at Wilding's was breaded chicken with sauce, and this perfectly cooked main dish was complimented with an array of piping hot seasonal vegetables, beautifully garnished to perfection. The waiting service was very swift [and included linen serviettes] , especially considering that most of these tempting dishes are made to order for superlative fresh cuisine at its best. Out of the Wilding's Resturaunt’s large windows unfolded the stunning Maidens Harbour backdrop with Ayrshire's rolling hills/marine coastline, ocean view [Clyde Estuary] and the famous imposing Island of Arran in not too far distance. I found this particular restaurant warm, and inviting, the staff came across as being very well mannered with perfect customer service skills and restaurant etiquette. Given this was a mid January 2024 trip,as opposed to a stay, I wasn’t therefore able to fully comment on the upstairs bedrooms. Nevertheless, I understand these upstairs are large, spacious and very well equipded with all the standard refinements. What struck me most was the stunning upstair bedroom ocean views'. Downside, I found these particular bedroom very slightly pricy, compared to thr likes of nearby Brig O' Doon Hotel in equally quaint Alloway suburb of Ayr.

Dreadful service! Waited too long for our main course and when it arrived it had obviously been under a heat lamp. The food was OK, but one bowl of potatoes and veg was not enough amongst 5 of us. Two of us ordered coffees instead of dessert but had to ask 3 times for them. When coffees eventually arrived, the order was wrong. They charged us for two courses but we only had one....no stipulation on menu that we had to take two courses. Offered dessert to take away at till but declined. Won't be back , so disappointed.

This was a most awful hotel. At the time of booking we explained that my wife had a gluten free diet. The telephonist confirmed the booking and said that gluten free food would be available. On the first morning the waitress said no gluten free cereal, toast or bread were available as they were available only if guest asked for them. When I said they had been requested at the time of booking she said that didn't count. I asked if the hotel would like my wife to go out to the car and bring in her own food; the waitress said yes. On the first evening my food was quite tasty but the portion size was very small and inadequate. When the waitress asked if everything was satisfactory I said it was tasty but very small. She claimed that I was the first customer in years to say that the portion was inadequate. The bedroom was adequate and the view excellent but not enough to outweigh the unacceptable dining room. On the second morning we had the same conversation and the waitress, a different one, said my wife should bring her own food again. One the second evening we ate elsewhere. As regards breakfast Wildings was able to charge my wife the full price even though she had almost no food from the hotel.

7 of us for lunch. A noisy gaggle of ladies, who visit Wildings on a regular basis. Our last outing had been a disappointing lunch at The Ivy (Glasgow). Comparisons are odious, but the quality of our experience at Wildings was so much better. Service was prompt, attentive and always helpful. The menu for lunch is consistently varied, creative and inventive. We all chose different items off the menu and not one of us was disappointed. Pleasing to the eye, plentiful and flavoursome to the palate. The restaurant is set in a tiny village facing the sea. I would heartily recommend a visit. I am sure you would not be disappointed.

Booked Wildings for family birthday dinner on 13/11/2021. Several of the party had previously dined here more than once, with excellent reports regarding the standard of cuisine and staff helpfulness. Unfortunately our experience on this occasion was the complete opposite-in common with another recent review. We waited in the foyer to be shown our table-a male member of staff walked past and barked ‘ name?’ at us- we told him, and he gestured with his head saying ‘through there’ towards a table, without accompanying us to the table. This set the tone for a very poor dining experience. There were long delays during the meal- our empty starter plates were still not cleared away over an hour after we sat down, and over 20 minutes after we had all finished eating. Several staff members were sullen and uncommunicative and no-one asked how the starter and main course were at any point. The fish and chips main course dish was not even infant portion sized. The food in general was of a very good standard, despite the long delays. When one of the waitresses was asked politely if they were short staffed, in view of all the delays, she appeared surprised and said that there were 12 staff on,suggesting that there was no excuse for the delays. One of our party had to speak to the manager, Sonia, before the end of the meal, to complain. She seemed aware of at least some of the problems, but her grudging apology and offer of a free drink for the diners did little to assuage the general dissatisfaction with the evening-in fact it had been hoped that the final bill would be adjusted to reflect this, but this was not the case. We did not pursue this on the night as the staff member taking payment was so apologetic and understanding- she had heard the original complaint and did not seem surprised, suggesting to us this is not an uncommon problem here. The young drinks waiter was a pleasure to deal with and so polite, and is completely exempt from any criticism, which we told him in person on the night.A tremendous disappointment overall, and one we will not repeat any time soon.

Only just getting round to writing this review unfortunately.I had booked a table for my mother in law's 60th birthday over a month before we were due to dine. Obviously this was during covid restrictions so I was aware we would be at two separate tables.Having not seen family for months due to lockdown this was the first opportunity we had to be as a family together and for a very special occasion. My sister in law had dined a couple of weeks before us with a large group and unfortunately they were sat with their backs to one another and I did not want this to happen on this occasion as it was such a special day for my mother in law. I phoned the restaurant about 1pm before we were due to dine at 7pm to check that our tables were next to each other and I specifically explained that this was because it was a special birthday and there would be no point going if we weren't able to speak to each other. The staff on the phone were very unhelpful and wanted me off the phone as quick as they could but assured me that yes the tables would be next to each other.7pm came and we arrived at the restaurant to be shown to two tables next to each other, but in booths with a wall separating us!The only booths in the whole restaurant! We immediately raised our concerns and disappointments at this, explaining that we had specifically phoned earlier to check that this would not be the case. All we got from Sonia (general manager) was 'sorry' but no - sorry but let me double check what we can do to help/make it better/rejig some tables around. Just sorry, get on with it.My mother in law expressed her utter disappointment and sadness at this to Sonia as half of her family were isolated at another table not even in view when all she wanted was for us all to be together and able to speak to each other during dinner. If we had known this was going to be the situation then we would have booked somewhere else. My mother in law was crying she was so upset but all Sonia could say was 'yeh I'm sorry about this'.I glanced over at unoccupied tables next to us and intimated that we could sit there instead as there was two tables of 5 next to each other, to which sonia replied that they were for a group of 8 that were arriving! My partner expressed his disbelief at this and asked what was going to be done to compensate us to which Sonia replied "I'm not listening to this anymore" and walked away!!None of us have ever experienced such level of disrespect and rudeness in a restaurant ever, let alone by a general manager. This woman should never be in a customer service position. She obviously doesn't have the capacity to deal with criticism or the ability to problem solve. The next day I got a phone call from a junior staff member who offered an insincere apology without further explanation. This further soured our experience. Having read similar reviews it appears that under Sonia's management, she continues to let this once successful restaurant down.

Am so disappointed after so many people raving about this place .., I’m sure it was great about 20 years ago ? Stuck in a time warp from start to finish … service is ok until you tell them your meal was at best average, it appears there’s no follow up anyway ? Food is awful and brought at lightning speed … my pate was salted beyond belief and the blackened monkfish inedible due to excessive Cajun seasoning ! Three slivers of monkfish rather than a fillet ? It appears not to matter what your meal is … you’ll be getting chips, new potatoes and some buttered veg ? Safe to say would not return - save your money and go to the bistro in the village instead …

Menu at this hotel and restaurant is extensive and food we ordered was very tasty - clean plates all round. However, the woman taking our order was surly, impatient and had a bit of the Basil Fawlty about her! The menu clearly states that all menu choices can be altered to suit customers with gluten free requirements. When one of our party checked with said staff member re. his selected dish being gluten free, he was told in a very overbearing manner that that particular item was not, and could not, be gluten free. When he asked about another item, she flounced off to the kitchen to check, came back and started telling him (from six feet away from our table) that that too could not be made gluten free, giving him a mini lecture on items that could be made to his dietary requirements and those that could not. NOT WHAT IT SAYS ON THE MENU!Apart from the above, we enjoyed our visit here as the food was delicious and very nicely cooked, and our young servers were excellent. Just watch out for Basil!

An extensive menu filled with a very wide range of choices plus an additional Specials menu, all sounding enticing. Our party of four were not disappointed – the food was well cooked, nicely presented, and the table staff efficient and quietly polite, although they were working hard to keep up with demand on a busy weekday. Sadly the evening was marred by the Duty Manager’s brusque manner on our arrival, which continued through the evening even though we’d done nothing to justify his displeasure. Our visit was further spoiled by being presented with a bill listing a wine we hadn’t ordered, almost £20 more expensive than our actual choice which itself was upper mid-range in price and which we’d checked was the correct bottle on its arrival at table. The Duty Manager grudgingly issued a replacement bill, without apology. This is not the first time we’ve received an inflated bill here (though from a different staff member) and two other friends have now told us they’ve had similar experiences. So – go to Wildings, enjoy their excellent food which on our night could not have been bettered, but check the bill carefully at the end! We’ve given the restaurant four out of five stars in recognition of the menu range, the food quality and the efficient service of the table staff but they lose the final star for the experiences described above.

Our group of 4 visited for lunch on Thursday. We had been before and enjoyed the food and service. We booked this because we wanted good fish and seafood but the menu was disappointing in that respect. Being so close to the harbour we might have expected a few things like langoustines, lobster, crab etc. There was nothing like this on the menu so our choices included the mixed fish and the hake. The tempura chicken starter was not crispy and the hake and mixed fish main courses seemed to have been kept warm for ages and had a soggy texture. The standard issue chips bucket and potato/ veg dish was odd as it comes regardless of what your order. We did complain, specifically about the hake to the waitress and again when paying at the desk, but despite the apologies there was no adjustment to the bill. From being shown to the table onwards there was something missing with the attitudes of the staff. A shame as previous visits had been enjoyable.

A warm welcome from a friendly, efficient and hardworking staff member. Our room was immaculate with view over the harbour. Our dinner was excellent with good ingredients well cooked. The wine list was extensive and reasonably priced. Breakfast again was excellent with quality ingredients well cooked. At all times the staff were friendly and wanted us to enjoy our stay.We have visited this hotel ( formerly the Bruce Hotel) for over forty years but this is the first time we have stayed. It will not be our last.

Just back from a fantastic 2 night stay at Wildings. From start to finish our stay was very enjoyable. The hotel is spotlessly clean and very stylish. We were allocated room 1 which is very roomy and has great views of the village and surrounding areas. We ate in the hotel on both days and the food was spot on. Perfectly cooked and nicely presented. The staff at Wildings are a credit to the hotel, very polite and helpful. 10 out of 10 for us. Try it, you'll like it !

Bank Holiday Monday I phoned at 10.15 to ask if they were dog friendly. Was informed we certainly are so I booked a table for 2pm. Travelled an hour and a half to arrive at allotted time only to be told not dog friendly. Asked to speak to management who turn out not to be people friendly either. Basically accused me of lying. When I said I won't be back was told loudly and childishly she wouldn't have me back. Decor is dated and reception area stinks of old fat and chips. Dreadfully embarrassing experience ruining a day out

We visited for a 90th birthday celebration, and had a very pleasant meal, although a few niggles marred the occasion. We had asked for a sea-view table when we booked weeks in advance, but this was ignored and we were seated at the back of the restaurant. We all had the seafood selection main course, which was interesting and tasty, but without doubt had been sat under a heat light for quite a while before service. I agree with the various previous comments, that the 'one size fits all' approach to vegetables/potatoes/fries is not always appropriate.Having said this, the service was efficient, the prices very reasonable, and unlike so many other establishments, they have not reduced the size of the menu, using Covid as an excuse. We would definitely visit again.

A regular haunt now and first choice for any evening meals out, Wildings never disappoints. Staff are friendly and attentive, decor is beautiful with great views out to sea from the front tables. Then there is the food. Amazing! Fresh! Delicious. Can’t fault it. Chicken schnitzel is my favourite which I find difficult to deviate from each visit!

We arrived without a reservation on a Sunday on the chance that we could be accepted for lunch. The staff were great and found us a table between reservations. We were presented with a very extensive menu. Huge choice! Order taken and served efficiently with our starters. Plenty time to finish that, then the main courses came. Finishing off with coffee we were comfortably ready to leave after 1 hour 15 mins. The food was very good and we both really enjoyed the visit.

I've been meaning to come to Wildings for a long time and especially since whenever I mention to anyone that I'm going down that end of the coast they always say oh you must go to Wildings Restaurant ! So I've been twice so far and I look forward to visiting again and again. The food is very good and reasonably priced with big portions. My last meal here was a Lamb Fillet with a cream and brandy sauce. It came with a side of vegetables and also chips. I liked how the lamb Fillet was sitting on a bed of mashed potato and not the usual horrible stuff such as red onion or cabbage. The service is quick and all staff appear happy in what they are doing. All Government guidelines were followed excellently.

To be honest I’m very surprised that people actually complain about the food at Wildings, they obviously don’t have a very good palate or in fact the Covid guidance as I’ve just read.......an absolutely ridiculous comment. My daughter and I were at Wildings today, as usual the food was fantastic, Wildings really is our favourite restaurant by a long way.Well done to the staff and owners you’re doing a great job producing fabulous food and service in these trying times and for very reasonable prices.I’m very sure our family will return very soon, as always.

Starter of haddock and mash brilliant and very tasty. Main of blackened salmon on rice very tasty also but portion size of salmon could have been bigger. Two mains accompanied by one small bowl of veg which included two boiled potatoes. One each ? Main also accompanied with a portion of fries which would not have been our choice. No doubting the quality of the food but would have been better with more veg instead of chips.Staff pleasant attentive and efficient but slightly disappointed at bill payment. Paid by card and put a tip in the tray. No thank you, smile or any recognition whatsoever from the man who I presume is the owner. Would be nice to have a thank you when you leave a gratuity.

Visited here for a late lunch on the spur of the moment. The menu had a good selection and my husband was pleased at having a separate vegetarian menu. I chose the chowder and the lamb. I found the fact that the meal that came with mash was also accompanied by new potatoes and fries. All mains come with new potatoes and fries. Why? Potato over kill! My starter and main were way too salty, the wafer thin 4 discs of lamb dry and overcooked and drowned in a very thick creamy overly salted sauce. The accompanying veg bowl had sweetcorn in it, which I dislike. At no time did the staff check that our meals were ok, or ask if we wanted any more drinks. My husband liked his soup and vegetarian crepe. On the whole underwhelmed by the service and standard of food and won't be returning.

4 of us went for lunch recently, first time since before lock down. We've been coming here for over 12 years, celebrated special birthdays, even a hen party but stopped coming so regularly due to frustratingly slow service at times. Same again, alas, the other day, with 3 other tables who arrived after us being served drinks and meals and having plates cleared before us throughout the meal. We waited ages after the main course to get the table cleared and by the time we ordered dessert, the specials we wanted were finished. By this time, one of our party had already given up and gone for a walk. It's a pity because the food is good and the restaurant has a great atmosphere and when service is good, it's spot on. Of most concern, however, was the waitress who didn't wear a mask, leaning over us all to serve and collect plates. If the young woman has an exemption, maybe she shouldn't be serving meals and drinks. We all felt anxious about that and puzzled because all other Covid safety measures were in place. Overall, it's a real shame about the criticism because we would much rather have had a good experience and left a positive review.

I was shocked beyond belief when a customer and his wife were allowed to order food when it was apparent from the moment they sat down that he had a very bad cough, the wife too also had a cough..Now this wasn't a little cough but rough and continuous, had we not just started eating we would have left. This extremely ignorant couple should never have left home, but the restaurant also has a duty of care to it's other customers and should have told them they were sorry but under the circumstances they weren't allowed to dine..I'm leaving this review for the sake of the owner ( this happened at lunchtime on fri the 11th Sept) who need to be made aware of what's allowed to happen within their premises in this worrying time, so they can hopefully correct procedures.Needless to say it completely ruined our day out.

Even covid cannot stop wildings popularity. On a pouring wet Wednesday lunch time a week after reopening the restaurant was doing a fantastic trade and completely deserves to. With the government eat out to help out scheme the cost of a three course lunch monday to wednesday is a bargain ten pounds.I had leak and potato gnocci with goats cheese and a white wine sauce. This was an interesting concept as it came very like a colcannon cake and less like traditional gnocci but it worked and though not what i thought it would be it was a very pleasant surpriseI followed that up with a trio of fish, hake, cod and salmon served with prawns and a cheese glaze - this was sensational. it came with individual chips, plus shared potatoes and veg. Finally i had sticky toffee pudding, this was soft, sweet and tasty and my only comment is that i felt it would have been set off with an ice cream as it just felt a little something was needed to complete the dish, however a very minor comment for a great meal.I really feel it would be extremely difficult to be the value and taste of wildings anywhere in this area.

We had been golfing and staying 2 miles along the coast at Trump Turnberry , but liked the look of the menu we saw online . Booked a table for 4 , arrived slightly early to find the place busy . Super attentive staff and really excellent food . 2 bottles Sauvignon Blanc and a few bottles Becks Blue later as we required a sober driver , we were last to leave . Can thoroughly recommend this establishment . The Lobster Bisque and Fillet Steak were among the finest I have ever tasted . We will certainly return.

We visited Wildings on Saturday 7th March 2020 for an 80th birthday Lunch my mother's favourite place to go. However this is no longer the case as the last twice have not been very good. Being a large party understandably puts a strain on the kitchen, waiters etc but we arrived when it was quiet. We were shown to our tables which although not ideal, we understood due to the size of the party. The orders were taken and I must admit the 2 mature waitresses who served us were somewhat sombre. One of our party asked for advice on something from the menu and was advised it was exactly as it states on the menu! Again in not a very nice manner. It was a joke though being asked to give a dessert orders before eating. When suggested that we might not have room for 3 courses at Lunch, it was met with "well if you don’t eat it you can take it home" again manner was off. After feeling rail roaded into ordering desserts, so that the kitchen could cope! The dessert was in fact packaged up for taking home. We felt very rushed through every course of our meal and therefore what should have been enjoyable was not. However when we wanted tea and coffee no-one came near us which meant we just asked for the cake and the bill and headed home to relax and enjoy the birthday at a more relaxed pace. The mature waiters could take a tip from the younger ones who had a smile on their faces and were very pleasant.

Celebrated a family members birthday here. The customer service was absolutely shocking- specifically from the manageress. She speaks very abrupt and mean. Think she may be due a lesson on customer service skills or else she’s going to drive all the customers away (we for sure won’t be returning, and I emphasise- because of HER).The restaurant was visibly empty and stayed that way throughout our time at the restaurant but yet we were forced to order our starters, mains AND desserts at the same time! (we were told if we didn’t feel like eating our ordered desserts we would just have them packaged up to take home- how on earth would you take ice cream home?). i also want to comment on the fact we were given no time to let our food settle between meals, which just makes you leave food on the plate as you feel to full.

The restaurant is comfortable and the tables nicely placed so you are not overlooking anybody else. It looked cosy on a cold wet day. We were seated quickly and the menus arrived quickly with a jug of iced water. Service was good and the food was excellent. We visited Wildings on a wintry night late in February, atmosphere was good and welcoming despite a busy restaurant. The service was very efficient and friendly complimenting the excellent food. Excellent home made rice pudding with apple compot and a fantastic vanilla cheesecake finished the meal. We are happy to highly recommend Wildings, well worth a visit.

When we looked at the menu she was a bit disappointed that there was no smoked haddock risotto, the lady that served us said no problem they would make it for her. Went on a small adventure to Coylton Arms Inn. I have to say we will be back, the food is very good, a well seasoned lasagna with plenty of herbs, nice béchamel sauce and a good salad and french fries. The only small criticism was the lack of staff which made the wait slightly longer than necessary. The staff themselves were extremely welcoming and the ambiance was charming without being twee. Portion size was good without being excessive. All in all an enjoyable experience that I would recommend for a pub lunch.
