Whitshiels Cafe in Dumfries & Galloway

There were four of us,a my self, a friend,my wife and Grandson.We had to wait over an hour for our meal,I know it's a busy time of the year,but an hour for baked potatos and salad,5 minute's in a micrwave.The gravy for the steak pie was thick and black,could hardle drop out of the dish,I couldn't believe it even the chip's were burnt.We were there a couple of year's ago in September and the put our reserve outside in the cold,we just left.But we thought we would try them again.But that's the last time I won't be back,and we have been going there since they first opened,not very often because of the distance.But when we have watched them it's as if they can't cope.3 gir's messing about with the coffee machine.I don't think so.

Lovely cafe and great welcome. Food delicious and nicely presented. Don’t normally have a pudding but the home made apple pie with lots of custard superb. Just found on passing by on the A7 as saw nothing in Hawick. Will definitely return and tell my friends in Dumfries and Carlisle.

This is second time I've been here in a short space of time, first time was just a coffee and cake and got a good impression so went back today for a late breakfast. Breakfast stopped at 11.30 and we were in on plenty time, the server came to take our order before 11.30 when we were going to order a cooked breakfast to be told they were stopped making them and when questioned about it being before 11.30 we were told that there were orders already placed so we couldn't order. I won't be back

Went for lunch and waited over an hour for food with my friend. Didn't even get asked for drinks until this time either which is awful service. Not a single apology when we went to pay. The food was cold and you could see they were busy but it would have been easier to let us know the wait would be an hour rather than us sitting for that long to get a drink. Watched customers leave and another customer commented to us that they also won't be back.

Lovely food and staff very attentive. Couldn't manage a sweet so bought a couple of homemade scones to bring home. Recommend.

Great location to stop off for a lunch or cake and coffee. Busy little place but well staffed and very friendly team to welcome you. Apple pie was absolutely lovely and high quality coffee. We didn’t get the chance to have more from the full menu as there was a 30 min wait. Worth a stop in to sample.

We popped in here after staying at the campsite at the rugby club. What a find! The staff were lovely, food tasty and generous helpings- and all at great value. Best bit was being able to sit in the sun having brunch.

Stopped off for a brew and scone on the way down from The Highlands on a biking trip. Happy staff very welcoming. Would recommend and revisit.

We live in Cumbria and visit regularly when we stay in Newcastleton. The cycle ride over the moors is fabulous The cafe is one of the highlights of our trip. The staff are always friendly and the food is very good. Well worth giving it a try. Loads of easy parking for larger vehicles. Looking forward to coming back next week. Thank you.

Have driven past this place hundreds of times and now we've been, we will be going regularly. Had festive baguette which was packed full of turkey, stuffing, cranberry and pigs. Delicious! Selection of cakes was lovely, home made custard cream was so light. Very reasonable prices too. Staff were very friendly. Looking forward to our next trip.

We had breakfast here a couple of times it was hot and very tasty . The place can get very busy at times but is well worth waiting for . The staff are really super friendly, especially a youg lady wirh blonde hair (very sorry didn't manage to get her name ) felt very welcome and would really recommended

I visited yesterday with my family for the second time . We took our young daughter out for a birthday lunch and I can honestly say the food was outstanding We adults had burgers and chips and the kids had fish and chips finished off with puddings. Our nine year old said it was the best brownie he had ever had. Will definitly be back again soon , thank you !

Waited an hour and 10 mins for food, attitude of staff awful, standard of food very much below par, we did get a free cuppa but the won’t make up for the experience, as regular customers we won’t be back, if a cafe is busy you bring in extra staff or cut back on opening hours but don’t allow that to impact on customer service Smoking at the tables even outside shouldn’t be encouraged, it’s very unpleasant when you are eating and nobody particularly children should have to put up with second hand smoke and the area is covered which makes it worse, put a discreet sign on tables to say no smoking instead of smelly ashtrays on tables with food

Really enjoyed our breakfast here. Came with my wife and ordered two full breakfasts and two coffees. Excellent value for money very pleasant staff

This is a great little cafe where the staff are excellent and can't do enough for the customers. It is very clean and tidy with seating outside under cover if required. Situated on the west side of the A7 just outside the town of Langholm. The choice is very good, the quality excellent the portions very generous and the price is great. This is suitable for singles, couples and families alike. There is adequate parking adjacent to the cafe. There is also decent disabled acces and toilets. The only negative I could find was that the hand drier in the toilets was rather disappointing and lacked gusto and heat. Otherwise, great.

We visited over the weekend of the common riding . Although very busy service and food were both excellent, Will definitely visit when next in the area.

As a regular who comes every 2/3 weeks for my take away lunch through out the 12 months of the year , I was disappointed to be told “ no availability for takeaway “. Happy to take my money rest of the year but because you were pretty busy , a regular take away customer has been turned away. Well that will be the last time I ever go for my lunch here. Not the nicest way to treat a regular customer.

i have eaten at Whitshiels Cafe on a number of occasions and the food has always been great. the staff are always friendly. if you are local or just passing pop in for good honest food.

Stopped halfway round our cycle loop for a break. Had coffees , fish pie and a wrap. The coffee was fine, excellent fish pie with green veg. Wrap and chips were good as well. Good food and friendly welcome at a reasonable price

Lunch out with mum. Mum had reversed a good table idea and was busy. No wonder was food was fabulous nice and warm chicken was also good quality. Good size. Good to see order was right quite often we go out to lunch and mums is wrong. She is allergic 2 cheese which makes her very unwell. The order was taken perfectly. As a local we visit here often. The food is always been great. I do recommend the Skinny Fries but that's just personal taste. If you are looking for a good value lunch in Langholm this is where I recommend.

Stopped there today for a spot of lunch on the way back home.Good honest nosh .Had special of the day a healthy portion of delicious mince and gravy,with a tasty dumpling on top with a mound of creamy mash,cabbage and peas.Plus a side dish of gravy.All piping hot.Were able to sit outside as such a gorgeous day same as the food.Brought back my youth.My partner in crime had a tasty chicken wrap and fries which she commented was a fair guid scran(bless her)Splendid latte and cappuccino put the icing on the cake as they say.Can not wait to pass that way again.

Out for a run on the motorbike and stopped in here for lunch. Have been several times before so knew what to expect. Had a lovely lunch. Chilli for me and steak pie for my wife. Both were perfect.The cafe is nothing fancy but the food is freshly cooked and the staff friendly.Unfortunately they didn’t take cards so that meant I had to leave my wife as hostage and go into town to find a cash machine. Only 2 minutes up the road so no big deal.Well worth a stop for a good meal if you’re passing.

Stopped here for lunch on the way home after a weekend away. We were at the point of walking out as we waited so long to get served....thankfully the owner noticed we still hadn’t given our order and sent a waitress over! Ordered fried chicken wraps and strawberry milkshake each. The shakes were absolutely delicious but the wraps were poor....overcooked fried chicken, couple of bits of lettuce and were smothered in mayonnaise. Put us off returning. Maybe we got the chef on an “off” day?

Have been using the cafe whilst staying in one of the log cabins,food is lovely,staff are lovely,prices are good. Nothing negative to say about the place at all.

This cafe doesn't look too inviting from the outside but a very warm welcome with delicious food and beverages is assured inside. Lovely friendly staff. Very convenient on A7.

You will not find better its clean and the food is good and at a good price. the cakes and sweets are home made. The Staff are very helpful and go that extra mile. It also has out side seating and toilets. It also has 2 Log Cabins for hire that look fantastic from the out side. Well worth a Stop or a stay over.

I’ve stopped at this place a couple of times now when passing through on route to Galashiels. Service has always been excellent, very pleasant staff . Food is excellent and sensibly priced . Perfect place to stop for a break whilst travelling along the A7.

We sometimes meet up with a friend and have lunch in Langholm but our usual venue was not available so we came here. We probably won't go back to the other place. The food here was excellent - very tasty and well cooked, especially the chips! Makes you realise the rubbish that many places serve. Service was good too, friendly and efficient. Only downside - outside toilets. It also got very busy and for the time of year and on a Friday lunchtime on the outskirts of town that is unusual. So get there early.

We visited on our last day in the area before our journey home. We both had the full English breakfast, mine with added black pudding. £5.95 + 50 for black pudding. This came with 2 slices of toast - choice of brown or white- and butter (proper butter). We both had coffee - a latte and cappuccino - approx. £2.50 each.

After reading the reviews we thought we'd give the cafe a visit. Service good and pleasant. Food very basic, overcooked, tasted of grease also our coats smelled of grease.

Called into Whitshiels Cafe after hearing how good it is and was not disappointed, clean & tidy, our meals where excellent and quickly served by friendly staff at reasonable prices ,cash only, TV showing local wildlife was also interesting to watch.Only downside was the toilets being outside, but would definitely recommend a visit

We stopped at about 1230 and we both had the Smoked bacon Quiche which was absolutely delicious, obviously homemade and probably using fresh locally sourced ingredients, it just tasted, sooo good. It was well plated in a generous portion with a side of salad and chips, the chips were very good and the salad was fresh and tasty.

Langholm /country walk and ended up at this quaint café on the outskirts. Very popular and quite small inside but very neat/tidy and clean. Staff very friendly and the food is excellent(Best Fish & Chips served we have had > EVER.)Please note Cash only, no cards. Pity as we could see customers turning away when reading the "Cash Only" sign on the door. 10 out of 10 on all counts for CAFE.. We will be back .Hope we can get a seat !!!!

What a fab place, very friendly welcome by lovely staff. Great choice of food hot and cold all freshly cooked while you relax with a cuppa. Freshly baked cakes etc also on menu. We ordered a burger, don't think we have seen one so big with all sorts of extras in it, masterpiece of John the chef/owner only £4.95....fantastic value. Came in to a warm welcome and sat down we had the ham egg and chips and the macaroni and cheese special aswell as dessert the staff were very attentive even though it was busy and we didn't wait long for our food which was beautiful and fresh the portion size is amazing and is at a very reasonable price for the size highly recommended if you are in the borders either as a local or passing through with good hearty food and a warm enviroment will be back alot

The service, the staff, the food everything is just fab. Nothing is too much trouble and the food is always perfect. We live in Langholm and Whitshiels is now becoming a regular place for lunch or a coffee. The staff are always friendly and happy to helps and the food is freshly cooked and always tastes brilliant. We also did a take-away which was no bother to the staff at all. Its a nice location with ample parking and toilet facilities on site. A good choice of menu and basically just a lovely place to go for a bite to eat. Always busy with locals and tourists. I highly recommend a visit.

great choice of meals, be warned... no such thing as a small portion!! staff gave a warm welcome. there was couple of walkers with a dog sitting at the outside tables a bowl of water was provided for the dog.

Just a quick catch up here. We are usually in here twice a year due to the opening hours. Popped in for a light lunch this time. Very busy with 20/25 people in at 1pm. We had soup and sandwiches plus coffee. Soup, lentil and veg was delicious. Sandwiches were tasty ham and prawn for me. Both includes crisps and a small salad. Everything was fresh, tasty and nicely presented. Very good value. Take out is also available.

Beautiful sunny day, too nice to sit inside. White Chocolate Cheesecake a marvel, home made Apple Pie & Lemon Meringue a total hit with the Granny's! Ice cream so moreish! A hidden gem just outside Langholm!Tea pot large enough to please everyone!Just enough to fill everyone before a walk up to and down from the Monument!Definitely another visit due...(The Roast looked fabulous too!)

Stopped off here after driving for two hours and I'm glad we did.Immaculately clean,good staff and reasonable prices.Good number of parking spaces available and as an added bonus for me an outdoor bird feeding station which was frequented by six different species whilst I observed it.Also for ornithologists was a board inside the premises where recent sightings of birds were recorded.All in all this place made a great impression on us and we will definitely visit again.

My husband and I stopped for breakfast on our way home from a weekend away, excellent cooked breakfast served with toast and not at all greasy. I always give extra cudos when tea is served in a pot as this was. Free wifi too. I do hope that in the future, the owner will consider toilets inside the cafe as the toilet block outside especially in torrential rain are its only let down. I will certainly return when next in the area though, the staff were very pleasant too.

This cafe is lovely for lunch with friendly staff and well cooked food. There is plenty of space in between tables which is great as one of my family is in a wheelchair so space definitely helps. We found that this cafe had everything that you could need for a nice family lunch!

A late lunch after many hours in the car - just what was needed. Friendly staff, a bird feeder outside, good menu, very reasonable prices and a list of recent local wildlife sightings on the wall. The ham, egg, chips and beans was very good. Nice ham. Closes 3pm.

We have driven past Whitshiels Diner so many times but today we stopped for lunch for the first time. I had steak pie and my wife had roast beef. She was too full for a pudding but I forced down an apricot crumble sponge with cream. All in the name of research, you understand.Every thing was soooo tasty. Clean and tidy and charming service from a lovely young lady. We will certainly stop here again as we often pass going to and from family who live in Scotland. Prices very reasonable too. I am well pleased to give it five stars.

Had lunch here with 2 friends in August . Was a bit apprehensive when they suggested we meet there, as it always looked like a fairly run down trnspost cafe. However when I got there I was suprised to see it had all been refurbished both outside and in. We had the most delicious Ham salad , I have never tasted ham as good as it was there. Service was good and the owner/chef made a point of coming and speaking to us. ATV screen showing live local wild life is situated on the wall and is fascinating to watch Can highy reccommend this place.

My friend and I went up to whitshiels cafe for lunch. It was very good and we really enjoyed it. I had the giant Yorkshire pudding with sausage, chicken, stuffing with mash potatoes and peas my friend had the chicken baguette with chips. We will be back in the very near future.

First visit for ages. Work has been going on to make the outside more attractive and since our visit signs have been added to make it much clearer that they are there and OPEN. Toilets are the least satisfactory aspect as they are out door. What we ate was decent fast and modestly priced. Well worth a call if you are traveling the A7 the next facilities north bound are at Hawick and off the main road.

Stopped here for coffee and delicious cakes. Our visit was enhanced by the opportunity to watch the hen harrier chicks in the nest via live webcam.

We drove past this café on way into Langholm, when we could not find anywhere that we liked in langholm, decided to give this a try, and boy were we pleased we did. there is a great choice of foods, home cooked and very reasonable prices, the staff are very friendly & helpful, creating a lovely atmosphere. I would definitely recommend a visit to Whitshiels.

Went to Langholm for the common riding last Saturday and having a couple of hours to kill decided to go for lunch. We had the Eyemouth fish and chips and it was very good, right up there with the best fish & chips around. The rest of the food coming out looked of very high quality and good value for money.Definately be back.

Stopped off for breakfast after finding on trip advisor and decided to try.The photos show diner sign which is no longer there. New owners obviously started to smarted up the outside, flagged access for wheelchairs and outside tables, but generally the exterior could be off putting.Had an excellent freshly cooked breakfast, reasonably priced, very friendly owners & good service.Watched camcorder recording of local bird of prey nest whilst dining - fantastic.

found this cafe today and what a surprise. We had the best home made steak pie and chips, a huge pot of tea for 3 people which we couldn't drink all of it. I also had the home made raspberry sponge crumble which was to die for. I will make a trip just to come back for that pud. At £6.95 for the steak pie and chips it was well worth it. You can also watch the hen harriers on webcam.
