Lunch time food was amazing. Sadly dinner time food was awful and the ice cream very gritty The atmosphere and service was great.

Absolutely stunning food, great beer and Very attentive service. Great lunchtime menu for the smaller appetite and very good value at £14.00 for two courses. The main menu is also available and having had the pie of the day we'll definitely be back. Real chips, proper mushy peas and a homemade chicken ham leek and stilton pie that had me stuffed but impressed 😁

A great place to visit and the food is really good

Had a lovely carvery, loads of veg, homemade yorkies, mashed potato was starting to colour which let it down but loads of meat (I chose lamb) made up for that as I'm not a mash fan anyway. Great roast potatoes too. We had the child/senior roast for £6.95... absolute bargain and definitely going back 😋

We had a lovely carvery yesterday though some of the food wasn't quite as warm as I'd like but it was delish. The puddings were amazing and the service was fantastic. A lovely time was had by all and the plate size Idea was a stroke of genius! Pay for a plate size, not what you have. Perfect! Lovely atmosphere and definitely one to return to.

Under new management, the exterior now looks welcoming and clean for a summers day/evening drink outside. Inside we received a warm and jovial welcome. The atmosphere was light and airy and they had no problem with us being early for our reservation. The staff are very accommodating. Drinks and food are reasonably priced and very tasty! We had a wonderful evening! We look forward to trying their ice cream station!

Limited menu at the moment but quality very good

Lovely Sunday carvery. Nice choice of meats, lovely veggies and huge Yorkshire puddings! The most delicious gravy that you can smell as soon as you walk in. Will definitely be back!

Booked for a late Sunday carvery lunch and was assured when booking that food was brought out fresh regularly. Rude girl showed us to our table, we felt as if we were a nuisance just being there, then never returned to take our drinks order so I had to go to the bar where the staff were all chatting. Decided to have a look at the carvery we were supposed to eat, a small piece of very dried out beef and an even smaller piece of drier looking turkey, doubt both pieces weighed more than 250g between them, and some slushy, grey looking vegetables that had obviously been sat around for a long time. Needless to say we left and went to eat somewhere else. Won’t bother returning, there are much nicer and friendlier places to eat at in Retford.

Update - June 2024. Carvery lunch. Good value meal. Wellcokked except for possibly frozen Roasties letting the side down. Staff professional, accommodating & helpful. BE AWARE The GOOGLE DISPLAYED CONTACT TEL. NO: IS INCORRECT AS AT June '24. Useful system if table booking is in 1 hour slots, which enables the staff to effectively manage table allocation for the next party. Book as many hours as you want. You still won't be rushed from your table. It just gives staff a better way to estimate when tables will be free for customers requiring them after you. Seems sensible to me. Cannot speak to food taste or quality. Menu seemed pretty basic pub fare. Place itself was slightly soulless. Bit ,ok for a quiet drink. Clean & orderly. Staff very pleasant, Talkative & helpful.

Only stopped for drinks but nice to see this place back as a real pub again. Carvery looked good even though we weren't eating

Amazing food, it's been a while since I could find a place that cooked 10oz rump steak medium-rare the first time, the homemade chips were amazing too, it was beautiful. The grills were just as great and filling. Not to mention the desserts; lemon meringue pie, sticky toffee pudding and my choice of chocolate cake and cream, soft, squishy, chocolatey goodness in a bowl. Will definitely return again.

Given this is a fairly new business, it isn’t going to last long with the big mouth barmaid. Spoke to me and several other customers like dirt. I think she really needs to assess her choice in working in this industry. Plain rude!

Under new management the Whitehouse Retford serves an A rating for Sunday Dinner. gammon , beef, and lamb on the carvery on the day. Full vegetables, leek cabbage amazing great English dinner with great service and an amazing atmosphere. Just go take the family you'll be stuffed.

Absolutely rude and lack of care. Table booked for 6 people at 6:30. Only 5 places, then when we got our food and finished we were then told that we had to move. It was 7:37 we had finished food 10 mins before and never got asked if we wanted dessert. Moved onto a table near the bar and it was so unstable that it made it hard to drink. One of the waitresses then had a meltdown behind the bar and broke down in tears due to being messed about. Big girl behind the bar arguing in front of customers is classy Won’t be back!!! Ruined my night

Excellent Sunday carvery. Meat slices are a bit thin, but very tasty. Great choice of vegetables and potatoes. Delicious!

Relaxed atmosphere , service was polite and attentive, food wasn’t spectacular although tasty it wasn’t as expected based on menu / price. Standout are the chips , let down by the soup (bread no butter, watery)and general refinement- lacking on the expected seafood specials

The staff were very attentive and friendly. 5 of us had lunch, but the menu was far more elaborate than the end product. My venison haunch was tough, and the cheesecake was more like a mousse. One vegetarian had the nut roast but the stuffing was very much like sage and onion in texture. £40 per head..too pricey for what we had. The vegetables were tasty. It could have been memorable, but the reviews surpassed the reality.

Under new ownership. You can pop in for drink now, or sit at the bar pre and/or post dining...something you were unable to do during stewardship of the previous owners. Altogether a much more pleasant experience, and worthy of support from patrons old and new.

We went to The Whitehouses for a bank holiday lunch yesterday and we would highly recommend it to anyone appreciates exceptionally good food. The owners are very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The atmosphere is inviting, relaxing spacious. If you have not been before i would encourage you to try the food.

Sadly over priced and under- whelming.The pie was all hard pastry and little else and the wild bore sausage and mash was tasty but looked lost on the plate.

Our first visit to the whithouses, a mothering Sunday treat, it was fabulous. We were a large group who received such a the warm welcome, the staff and owner provided an excellent service, the food was delicious and top marks also for the presentation. Thankyou, we will most certainly be visiting again.

So good to see this lovely pub/restaurant with Friendly Faces at front of house. We have had some fabulous meals here now after banning ourselves a few years ago because of the extremely rude Previous manager. All that is in the past, he's moved on to upset people elsewhere! Now we have an excellent combination of new owners who make you Totally Welcome and along with a good and interesting wine list, the food is tremendously good (superb venison, fish & chips and steak and nothing ovetly fussy) with smiley, attentive (but not in a pestering way) service and the big bonus.... if you want to open another bottle or have a port or brandy after your meal, they bring it with a smile and you're welcome to stay as late as you like without having to stand in the car park. BRING IT ON, Edward, Jane and the team!

We visited the Whitehouses at the weekend for a meal to celebrate my birthday. I have to say that it was excellent. The food was very tasty and the service was superb. Lovely wine and well kept ale - I would definitely recommend a trip!

When I booked the table, I asked if they have an A La'Carte menu on a Sunday and was informed they do as well as the Sunday lunch carvery. When we arrived I asked for the menu only to be told they only have a Sunday lunch menu plus a specials board. Rather disappointed but we stayed and ordered. It was my daughters Birthday (they drove from Barnsley). Mains were Beef, Pork and Venison. Whilst not cooked badly, the meats were hard to cut with the blunt knives, the venison chewy though. No one came to the table to ask if were enjoying the meal. We all (4)decided to have Crème Brule but were informed they had sold out. I feel the pricing did not reflect the quality of the plates. I was wanting the slow cooked beef cheeks from the other menu.

Visited last night as a table of four, our first visit to the white houses! We will definitely be returning, from the moment we arrived we were greeted with a very warm welcome by a friendly, chatty team; from the decor to the staff friendliness, the food to the drinks, everything was absolutely amazing. We were served by younger hosts and they were so polite and could not do enough for you. 5 star service thank you team Whitehouse!

FOH staff were very welcoming and attentive, need a little more training on drinks. Food was excellent beautifully presented, clean and well lit.

Owner was more than accommodating when we arrived without booking in advance, managing to fit us in even though they were busy. Friendly and welcoming staff too.

Now under new management, great service. I would definitely recommend a visit 😊

Our large family of 15 visited. We pre booked and were given the snug room for seating. Our ages ranged from 2 to 75. We all enjoyed our meals immensely. We had the roast beef, belly pork and sea bass as adults and the kids had Goujons and fish and chips. Everything was superb! Portions, presentation and service. The new owners could not do enough for us and we were very well looked after. The deserts were simple and classic but very well done. If you want great Sunday dinner done really well come here. The new owners were 6 weeks in and this was a superb experience!

We were out to help celebrate our friends 70th birthday the landlord was very welcoming and the staff friendly and efficient nothing was to much trouble, the food was very good the steaks were cooked to perfection, a good time was had by all.

Amazing food , The new proprietors Ed and Jane really have pulled out all the stops, we had 3 courses and all 3 were so so tasty...I had the partridge goujons to start with Beef Cheek for main and Cornflake tart for dessert, My wife had the Soup of the day to start, Seabass for main and Apple crumble, A Nice relaxed atmosphere with a separate bar area away from the seating for meals..Good selection of drinks as well..The new owners opened the doors on 14th September 22 so any negative reviews prior to this date should be ignored.

Fantastic dinner for a large group of us. Edward and his staff were very friendly, flexible and helpful. Delicious meal, with ingredients locally sourced. Relaxed atmosphere was great for a stressed pre-wedding party. Would definitely visit again.

My partner and I stumbled across this gem of a restaurant last week when we were passing through. The food was absolutely first class, very friendly staff and a warm inviting atmosphere. Highly recommended and I hope we get the chance to visit again soon!!

Used to be good. Gone downhill. Will never return overpriced & substandard food. The scallops was full of sand discusting unedible. Way better restaurants than this will spend my money elsewhere.

Absolutely worth seeking out. Had a fantastic meal for my dads 71st. Food and drink was excellent and the guys looked after us superbly. 100% would recommend. We’ll be back very soon

Had a lovely meal here this evening with family and friends! All the food that was ordered looked delicious, but the beer-battered fish and chips was to die for! The batter was really light and tasty and the chips were excellent! It's not the cheapest, but the food was truly excellent, and speaking purely for myself, the completely clean plate I left spoke volumes! Highly recommended!

I had the Christmas menu and it was delicious. The restaurant was looking festive and there was a good atmosphere. Throughly enjoyed being there.

Amazing food, lots of choice and huge portions. Everything from sea food platters to game pies and all the favourite tradional dishes as well. Can't comment on desserts as always too stuffed from starter and main but again I know there's a great selection. Very popular so book well in advance, you won't be disappointed.

The food was absolutely amazing, great menu and it was a lovely restaurant. It would have been 5 starts but I knocked off a couple of stars because of the manager/staff as when we arrived they stood and glared at us as if we'd inconvenienced them and didn't greet us at all. I had been warned about the miserable guy but was surprised at just how unfriendly he and his wife(?) made the atmosphere. We were served efficiently without a smile, until the older lady took over our service and she was really lovely - lets hope she stays. I would recommend this place due to the food but do not expect a welcome, never mind a warm welcome!

Most of the staff members were really lovely, but we felt we were spoken to rudely when they told us they needed our table for the next guests. The starter platter was beautiful. The main meal of partridge was dissappointing. My son in law had steak in which this was not cooked to his liking. He asked for medium. Parts of the steak was rare. The cooking was not consistent. Prosecco drinks was the only choice in which we dislike prosecco. We were spoken to rudely when we went to pay. Over priced.

Lovely food. Downside can be the mood of the staff/owners, which is hit and miss and can be uncomfortable. Such a shame, I'd give it 5 stars otherwise. You almost feel like you've done something wrong or are an inconvienience.

This home away from home is a hidden gem, go try it I urge you as you will not be disappointed but don't tell your friends let's keep it our secret. 🙏 P.s This is a Family run oasis done properly other places need to visit and up their own game.

Mostly very good food, big portions. Tempura king prawns beautiful. Only complaint was 'rack of lamb' which was more like two fatty lamb chops.
