White Lion in North Devon

We went here a few times during our holiday in October half term as a group of 8 adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs. The owners really looked after us & we had so much fun with the locals singing at open mike night and the Halloween disco/quiz! It really is a proper old school pub with good pub food!

We popped in for drinks but also to appraise it for eating later that day. This is very much a pubby pub with weekly karaoke and steak nights. I imagine most customers are locals. (We decided not to try eating there.) A traditional pub ambience with a friendly-enough welcome. It is quite small. Could do with a deep clean and some tidying-up

Disappointed. We have been following their facebook page for awhile and decided to give it a try. The pub may be ok for a drinkers local but wouldn’t bother if you are looking for a nice meal. The pub is tatty and needs sorting out. The furniture is past it’s best. The dining table was set up with 2 dining chairs and 2 armchairs that when my daughter sat on it basically sunk so low she couldn’t reach the table. The food was similar to what I would expect from a hungry horse or Wetherspoons and we were very disappointed. I am just thankful we didn’t pay the full price as it was two for 1 Tuesday. Such a shame it isn’t better as would love a decent eatery locally

4 very wet cyclists (and me and the dog) needed sustenance. No pub will answer the phone before 12 mid day.So...when the door opens we were welcomed and warmed. Good pub grub (like the steak baguette). Its a good solid little pub. Happy to recommend.

Oh dear. The most expensive place in Braunton for drinks and the dirtiest place in Braunton. Dog poo in the garden. Toilets were absolutely disgusting in the men’s and women’s. Lady in the bar was friendly but the pub needs to up their game.

All I can say is hats off to the landlords! Firstly through taking on a new pub during a Global pandemic and secondly for doing such a great job - Especially with limited staff available, long working hours and increased trade levels to deal with... In what has been a very difficult & worrying, if not impossible 18 months for everyone involved in the hospitality industry. We've have eaten here on several occasions and each time we can not fault any part of the experience. (And always end up staying longer than planned, just for the atmosphere!) Such a friendly team of staff, always happy to help and the landlords could not have been more welcoming and helpful. So lucky to still have this lovely, traditional style pub in the village and wish them every success 🙌

We stopped off at this lovely pub on our way to croyde bay with friends .we have driven past this pub for many years and thought it was about time we called in . We were greeted by warm welcoming staff and shown to the terrace garden. The service was excellent and we had a few drinks before we set off on our journey. Well worth a visit 😁 will definitely be returning .

Recently had my birthday party here. I literally cannot praise them enough. Fantastic hosts and so well organised. The buffet food provided was absolutely amazing. Staff were polite and attentive. Made my night so wonderful with a personal feel to it.

Best pub in the village by far,the new owners are friendly and go the extra mike that the customers are made to feel welcome,the drinks are good and the food is great,such a breath of fresh air to have people running this pub who actually seem to care as the last owners were quite jgnorant and unwelcoming.

We came down to Braunton with friends, looked around for places to eat and drink, found the white lion pub. We ordered chili Nachos, these are unreal and to die for. Unfortunately we arrived at 7:30 and was told the kitchens were closing, but the landlord said to us all grab a drink and I will cook for you, we felt we were apart of a family was great. We all urge anyone to visit. Thanks Delwin and Anthony. Think I spelt the Welsh name right 😁

A group of us (friends/house mates) have been staying in Bruanton for a few weeks now and in that short time the staff at the White Lion already made us feel like locals. The pub here is cozy and friendly, the food was delightful (the best Sunday roast I’ve had in a long time!!!) and the chefs were accommodating of dietary requirements #annoyingvegans. Beyond this, every time we visited we instantly felt at home in the pub and the owners made us laugh on repeat. We thoroughly recommend this place, whether you’re a group of surfing kooks like us or a family out for lunch. Big shout out to Dell, from Abi Oscar Joss and Paris!

We stopped here on our way from Croyde for a drink. We had had some poor experiences in a couple of other pubs on our holiday, but the White Lion showed us that a pub with decent staff and customer service can exist. We were politely asked to complete the test and trace details and asked where we wanted to sit. Our children and dog were made very welcome and the staff could not have been friendlier. Thank you for restoring our faith in the good old British pub. Wishing you all the best for the end of this year

When we passed on route to Croyde Bay and the taxi driver told us it had closed we were sad that another pub had pulled it's last pint so we were delighted to visit on its reopening day having bumped into the new owners outside the previous day. Nice atmosphere inside and great table service and good selection of beers and other drinks. Here's wishing the new owners much success, support your local or lose it, there is still a life out there to be enjoyed so why not dip your toe back out there and start relaxing back into the life we all need to rediscover

Just don’t get it.. went to this pub due to recent reviews and found it totally soulless:( It was not warm nor welcoming, and so I was really disappointed and totally confused at recent reviews? Not my bag.. so I went back just in case it was just a bad evening and again yip, ... as in nope.. really sorry but big thumbs down :(

We booked a large table for drinks on a Saturday afternoon. Dave the owner was up-front on the phone about them not being able to serve hot food due to a refrigerator issue on the day, which was fine with us because we just wanted to escape the rain at our campsite for somewhere warm and a fresh pint. Dave and Claire were very welcoming on arrival and great hosts throughout. Good selection of drinks that were well priced. As time went on the pub filled up and we were offered bowls of chips and able to bring in our own food for dinner (as they couldn't serve their own on the day) which was very much appreciated. Great atmosphere, clean/hygienic and good location. Recommend.

Absolutely fantastic place, great landlord who went above and beyond for a large group of us. Highly recommend this pub!

We have recently moved to Braunton and have started frequenting The White Lion.Dave and Claire have recently taken over and are lovely hosts and very friendly.Great selection of real ales and the beer is kept well.They have just a simple menu on at the moment but the food was nice and hot and good quality. The Lion is a great locals and tourist bar with a fine outdoor space. Until this month (July 2020) the pub had been run brilliantly with great beer selection and good foods. A new Manager(?) has come in and apparently knows everything... including how to run out of ale and, attitudinally, offend all regular patrons, who are defecting elsewhere... look instead for the Black Horse for quiet pints and Indian food.

Great friendly staff and banter from the locals. Fire really cozy on a winters afternoon nice a quiet and peaceful just what you require to recharge your batteries. Toilets very clean and pub kept like a traditional pub.

Visited this pub over the August Bank Holiday.We ordered a couple of meals,while they took a while to arrive (to be expected on such a busy night) they were very tasty and well cooked.We enjoyed our stay here,lovely friendly people great atmosphere and very hard working bar staff, also has a nice Beer Garden out the back.We popped back the follow night for a quick drink.Would 100% visit again if we were in the area.

Our group of 6 lady cyclists stopped here for a lovely lunch in their sunny beer garden. The young lady behind the bar was so friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble for her. the food was tasty, well presented and excellent value. Highly recommended.

We've eaten at The White Lion as a family and in a large group - mainly between April and October. The team are super helpful and friendly and always accommodating to whatever size group we're a part of. The food is genuinely homemade - it's fresh, full of flavour and tasty. Highly recommend.

What a terrible dive this place is. We arrived for a christmas holiday in Braunton, I phoned ahead to book a table on the Saturday early evening. When we arrived, a group of 4 adults and our 3 children, we were turned away with no apologies or explanation, just a '' not tonight, we are too busy''. For some strange reason, we we attempted to go there again. This time we were turned away again by the rude bar staff, because our children had a slush puppy. The attitude of these people is appalling, neither time were they friendly. It's Christmas for God's sake

Excellent range of well kept ales with new guest ales on a regular basis. Food ain't bad either - especially the Sunday lunch. Lovely friendly and knowledgeable staff.

We were really happy to find this dog friendly pub after a long walk on the South West Coast Path. The pub felt welcoming and the food was served quickly. Apparently the beer is special too, but we didn’t try that. Would definitely recommend.

As we had a forty minute wait for our takeaway from the shop next door, we decided to pop in here for a quick pint or two :o)First impressions like others was this was a locals pub, but as soon as we got to the bar to order some drinks, it all changed. We were warmly greeted by the staff who offered us some great advice on the wide range of bottled local beers.Although we did not order any food, we did have a quick look at the menu to see what was on offer. I would say that there was the traditional pub selection to choose from with some daily specials. What we did see served up to other customers did look good.We did plan to go back another day to try the food, but ran out of time on our holiday.Beer was great, service was great, food to try next time.

wasn't quite sure when we walked as it looked a bit like a locals bar , however everybody was friendly and we ordered a couple of chicken and chorizo pies and chips , food was lovely and well priced , not a huge menu but will we were there quite a few people came in for food and pies seemed to be popular

The White Lion worked really well for ten of us yesterday, on a sunny August afternoon, as we met for an early evening meal before heading on to the evening part of a wedding. The beer garden’s in a sunny spot, there are some tasty ales on draught, the pub food menu isn’t exceptional but everything we had (steak pies, burgers, veggie burritos and more) was freshly cooked and pretty tasty, and reasonably-priced, and the staff were quick, friendly and efficient. A good choice.

Visited after a long day out for a few drinks. Really nice friendly pub. Made to feel welcome straightaway. The kids enjoyed playing the pub games. Really clean and service was great with a smile. We enjoyed the cheesy nachos too. Would definitely return.

We’ve been in twice, so far, whilst staying local to here. It’s a very nice pub, and welcomes dogs, which is a bonus. The team is very friendly and welcoming. The second time here we also ate. The food was fab - brilliant chips - all very lovely. Certainly the best place to eat and drink in Braunton that we’ve found. The team deserves a much much better Trip Advisor ranking.

Whilst on holiday came into this pub twice once for a drink and then because of the lovely atmosphere decided to come back again for food

We visited here as a family on holiday. As soon as we walked through the door the staff were so welcoming!! After receiving our drinks, we looked around and everyone seemed like they were enjoying themselves and it was a lovely atmosphere. We then returned a couple of days later for food, and I had the gammon and it was absolutely delicious, the chips were the best chips I have ever tasted!!! We will definitely be returning to Braunton because of this pub, and would recommend it to anyone. Our dog loved it as well ❤️

Lee and the team have really made the White Lion a special place to visit in Braunton. Very nice personal bar where locals and visitors mingle, also gaining a very good reputation in the village for home cooked meals.We love their pies and especially their fish pie and lasagne.

Lovely pub with good food and friendly staff. Accommodated a party of 10 with no notice. Had to wait a while for the food and portions were limited but it was very pleasant.

Nice pub, dog friendly, good food but waited a longtime. I had spanish platter and hubster had steak n ale pie, I ended up with his veg though....

Blimey fell on our feet in here, lovely pub. Good range of draft beers but the strong range of bottled beers are just superb. The food range is limited but still very good. The pie, the gammon and scotch egg we’re particularly good. Really like this place and the guy behind the bar was great.

A lovely,old style pub on the way out of the village that serves a good selection of ales, unfortunately when we visited we found that ours and our friends children were made to feel less than welcome by a member of staff even though they were doing doing nothing wrong,the chap behind the bar was exceptionally friendly to all however and that does go to show a little courtesy does help.

We found the White Lion pub while staying nearby we called in for food, the food was that good we returned the night after.

Started using the White Lion again after the new management took over.

My family and I had a beautifully cooked Sunday roast yesterday, with plenty of fresh veg and delicious gravy! Very attentive landlord and lovely atmosphere. Thanks guys!

Stopped in here a few times during the week stay we had, a lovely beer garden just right after a long day on the beach. Food menu looked good but we didn't eat here.

We like to go for a nice drink and meal when we visit my sister. The landlord makes you feel very welcome and always has a smile. Lovely and friendly and families welcome.

Pasó por aquí por casualidad y realmente me gustó tanto que mantienen regresando durante nuestras vacaciones! El personal es encantador, muy acogedor de los niños, mucha gente de aquí, pero como visitante te hacen sentir tan bienvenidos. Ambiente encantador. No tienen comida pero parecía genial.

Visite la zona, fui por mi cuenta y fue inmediatamente nos hicieron sentir como en casa. Buena variedad de cervezas, algo para todos los gustos - y la hamburguesa azul era fantástico. Tan bueno fui a la noche siguiente otra hamburguesa y a probar más de las cervezas. Sin duda volveremos.

Visited on a Sunday dinner time & although very quiet I was delighted to find that the White Lion is now what it should be, a pub. The whole place is light, airy & cosy & you can smell the polish (that's not a complaint) which makes a pleasant change from how the building used to smell. Didn't have food so can't comment, but the menu looks like basic pub grub, I will return to give it a try. Good luck to the couple who are running it now & I hope the people of Braunton start using the place again. I'll certainly be back.

A nice local pub serving a selection of local and national ales both draft and bottled. Staff are warm and friendly, great place while away the winter hours or enjoy the nice quiet beer garden in the summer!

The White Lion is centrally located in Braunton and offers the usual range of British pub fare. It is clean and comfortable and was quiet when we were there at about 8 pm. And, what we mean by traditional is very inclusive - the young man serving at the bar had a 90's David Beckham hairdo. What more could you ask for when reminiscing about the good old days?

Stopped off at the White Lion on the way home from Croyde Bay after a long day on the beach. We had 5 hungry kids with us and no idea what to expect. The staff were very helpful and pointed us to a table in the beer garden. There was a good choice in the menu and a couple of nice beers on tap. We ordered for 7 people and it only took 25 mins for all the food to arrive. It was all of a very good standard and the kids ate everything. Would definitely recommend it for good staff and quality pub food.

Am Ende eines regnerischen Tages genau der Wohlfühlstop auf dem South West Coast Path. Sehr nette Bedienung, gute, auch vegetarische Karte. Als Local Beer unbedingt das Otter probieren. Es gibt kostenlose Proben. Visited by locals, keinTouristenpub, sondern ein echter!!

Think this place under its past owners and offering as a Thai Restaurant, had made it a not so welcome place to go & dine.Well in both there has been change and in Lindsay & Lee who now manage this great wee Pub, you will find great food & hospitality when making the choice to visit. They passionately care in all they do & that is so evident in all they do. So whether your thirst needs quenching, there are many well kept options to help along with superb choice of creative & homemade dishes to choose from the Menu. You must try one of the Burger options....mmmmmmm heaven in a Bun, served with the best Ketchup I have ever tried & guarded secret, certainly not Heinz, as this stuff was different league. Can also vouch for the great tasteing Coffee, that is freshly ground & offers good selection in offering.Will definately be re visiting this wee Gem of a Pub when next down, as so much better than others around in area & made to feel so welcome.

Good local pub on the road to Croyde, well worth a visit. Lee and Lyndsay, the managers are hugely experienced in this trade, but have a young fresh outlook that makes the pub zing and keeps the traditional locals happy. Try Lyndsays Spanish platter with crusty bread, hams, cheeses and a selection of olives. Great for sharing. Or give the fish finger sandwich off the specials board a whirl. Not exactly Captain Birds-Eye, but huge chunks of fresh fish on a brioche bun. Whatever you choose, give The White Lion a try. Enjoy

Poor place has had a few failed landlords but now looks as if it is back on its feet. always a nice welcome and a now good menu. it is unfortunately still living wth the stigma of the failed Thai restaurant, but those reviews are in the past. for those coming from Saunton way, make it your first stop in the village and your last out.

It is good to see this lovely local venue finding its feet after a troubled time.Need to try the food and will do so soon.

Simple night at a pub with pleasant customers and staff. A couple of with nice Ales to try too . We had a meal and although the menus choice was quite small, it was great pub food and we got the strong sense the folks preparing & serving the food genuinely cared about whether we had enjoyed our meal. Nearly everywhere you eat someone will ask “Was everything alright?” But how often do you get the feeling they really care?

We dropped into the White Lion for the first time since the new management took over and we were pleasantly surprised with the reworked interior layout. The beers on offer were fantastic and the food was really good, we shared the platters which were great value compared to other pubs in the village. Highly recommended.

This English village pub is now under new management. Lee and Lindsay provide a warm welcome and provide 2 real ales with a number of craft bottled beers (ie: Punk IPA) with a menu providing social food to share with friends and individual basket meals.Hot drinks are now also available.

Visited with 5 of my friends for a birthday meal it was gorgeous, have never eaten in a Thai restaurant before but have had Thai food cooked for me by my friend. The food was lovely, dim sum was great and the pork was cooked perfectly! Couldn't fault the food or the staff and thought it was a really good price! :)

Beef massamam and plain rice. The 'curry was very bland, watery slop, potatoes , veg and very little beef and poor quality. The rice tub was so packed with rice it was enough for 3 people. I only wanted a take away for me. So I paid £10.50 for rice, potatoes, a bit of veg and very little meat in a bland watery slop. It was rubbish and I threw most of it in the bin. To make things worse when I made subtle complaints a few days later.... the Thai chef was extremely rude and insulting to me in front of her other staff.

Went in with friends for drinks 1 wine, me and another had 2 kinds of whiskey and enjoyed ourselves with a pack of scampi fries. A lovley lil pub doing very well #tradition.

We ordered a meal for 6 of us for my uncle's birthday, the food was so dreadful it was embarrassing to serve it at the table. It was all watery , sloppy ,disgusting mess. We tried 6 different dishes and they were all dreadful. The portions are tiny and the quality of the chicken ,beef and duck is appalling. My dad paid £12.00 for a roast duck dish , there was about 3 pieces of rubbery fatty duck swimming in brown water. This food ruined my Uncle's birthday and upset all of us. I will never eat here again I would be ashamed if I had sold this food to the public...worst ever.

Total lack of management! My wife suggested we go out for dinner tonight but I said "it's bank holiday we would be waiting for ages to get a table lets get a takeaway instead! I fancy tai." Big mistake I left home at 7 and ordered at 7:23 my order came out at 9:25! 2x noodles and a chicken satay!! (Totally mediocre) whilst sat at the bar I watched people get up and walk out and others get a refund and go next door and gat a Indian (in a lot less time than my order!! The service was becoming a running joke at the bar! My wife even phoned the bar to see if I was still there and was not having a drink with mates! If I was the owner I would be kicking off as it must have cost him a pretty packet in refunds lost orders and jumbled up bills! Defiantly not worth the wait!

Take away;Ordered chicken Penang, traditional red (Kaeng Phed), traditional green (Kaeng Kiew Waan) with sticky rice and crackers.Yummy thai (very similar tasting to the curries we've had in Thailand).All 4 of us were really happy with all of our dishes.*Only thing we'd say is that the take-away prices were a bit expensive.Eating in;Can't remember what we had but really nice meals and were happy with the price.Decor inside the pub is a big improvement on previous decor. Simple, clean and welcoming. Staff were nice.*Only small thing was that the meals came out a few minutes apart.On the menu *'s are used to symbolise different heats of food, 1* is used for both 'Contains nuts' and 'Slightly hot'. Perhaps could use differing symbols to make it clearer?All in all very happy with the quality of the food and would come again.

Had the best Pad Thai this side of Bangkok in a really casual atmosphere. This is under brand new management and has been refurbished but they have not changed the name so left with previous E junk... Wine list could do with going upmarket but then I'm fussy but beer is well kept... Will be back soon for the coconut prawns!!!

Took my partner here as we are close by and fancied a Thai meal. Waiting for the food was no problem as we sat in the sunshine in the beer garden. Food only took 10 mins to get to us!! Only downside is it is fairly expensive. But worth it as we both thoroughly enjoyed it.

I took my partner there for his birthday, he loved Thai food and this wasn't what we expected! We went as I was recommended by a friend. The noodle based dishes are literally like a sloppy mess! Not happy. Won't be going back.

Another Thai restaurant, great. Traditional English pub it isn't! Dogs allowed in the minuscule bar area. Decent drinks I guess but won't be attending unless we're waiting for a curry from across the way!!
