the staf are very friendly and the meals are very good, the outside area across from the restaurant has lovely views and it is possible to sit there with a drink

This place has some great food and some average food. The bread starter freebie is very nice indeed and the Scotch Egg an absolute beauty but the Macaroni Cheese is very ordinary (when i eat out and pay £12 for a Macaroni Cheese i expect a better version than that for £1.50 from Aldi rather than on a par with it).The portions are frustratingly small with the adult menu divided into 'smaller', medium' and 'larger' portions. My 7yr old son had an adult portion from the 'larger' section of Cheeseburger and chips and he was still wanting for more. Also no Islay Ale despite it being on the menu and nor were there other Real Ales on draught. Just the bog standard lagers found all over the UK and a 'smooth' Belmont beer on electrics. The young waitress politely informed me the Islay Ale is rubbish anyway. I was really looking forward to sampling that ale. This place has the potential to be fantastic but they have some way to go to hit the heights.

Comme dit dans le titre cette établissement n'existe plus sous forme d'hôtel. Il a été remplacé par n°1 Charlotte Street qui est plutôt un B&B.Plus de trace du restaurant non plus.J'ai formulé une critique récente sur le B&B...C'est pittoresque

El White Hart es cerrado y ahora se llama No 1 Charlotte Street y es un pub que sirve a la juventud de la ciudad y tiene un hábito de noches escandalosos, cuando estábamos en Puerto ellen iba bebiendo hasta las 2 de la madrugada del sábado por la noche.

Había 3 en nuestro grupo. Teníamos dos comidas de la noche aquí. Una experiencia no era buena, el servicio indiferente, vino blanco cálido y comidas y una variedad de comida aburrida francamente no muy sabroso. Segunda noche todos tenían el mismo... cerveza pescado y patatas fritas que estaba bien caliente y buena. Vino era fresco y servicio esta vez. No tengo prisa en volver aunque

Good Service, nice room. Really good portions, get the seafood platter, it's enough to feed 2 or 3 and the smoked salmon is amazing.

Me paré aquí una de las noches que estuve en Port Ellen. Descubrí que hacia el final de mi viaje o podría haber comido un poco más.El lugar tenía el estilo de un clásico restaurante hotel viejo. El menú no era enorme, pero había una buena variedad de raciones. Me acomodé en el pescado y las patatas fritas. Era muy tranquilo cuando fui allí, pero yo todavía estaba sorprendido de cómo mi comida llegó rápidamente.La porción era enorme y muy sabroso, con una gran variedad de ambos lados. Realmente lo disfruté. Lo único negativo que notamos aquí fue que parecía estar un poco escaso, como más tarde en algunas más mesas llenas y tengo la sensación de que este puesto mucha presión en el lugar, así que puede ser difícil cuando está lleno.

Nos dijeron que sólo había dos lugares para comer en Puerto De Ellen, así que nos fuimos a la salida tanto y eran un poco caros y concurrida, así que caminamos un poco más arriba de la calle. Vinimos a un hotel tranquilo y un bar en el borde del puerto de Ellen. La comida aquí viene en porciones grandes y es más barato que algunos de los otros lugares. También tienen una buena selección de whisky islay. Teníamos los nachos y torta de carne, y los dos estaban bien. Con pocas opciones en Puerto Ellen este lugar no es para perdérselo

Maten ok men inget ställe jag återvänder till. Helt standard pubmat. Tomt i restaurangen i övrigt och kändes lite olustigt att sitta där ensam. Finns bättre matställen i Port Ellen.

Good food I has the goats cheese to start mmmm delsih and then the chicken burger... and they call it a whopper for a reason! and all very reasonable

Mysig restaurang med pub känsla.Det finns en avdelning med vita dukar men där satt inte vi.En av oss provade Haggis vilket han gärna rekommenderar den äventyrlige.

Åt här två kvällar av tre som vi bodde på hotellet och vi blev inte besvikna. Gott och mättande och mycket skotskt. Klart prisvärt !!!

Ate here one night last week. Atmosphere ok lovely fire but food too rustic!! Portions massive and of basic quality. Prob try again tho. Just needs refined a bit.

Åt här i samband med boende på hotellet. Man får mycket mat, men maten i sig var inte så mycket att ha. Miljön var mörk och dyster och personalen oengagerad.

Ate here every night during a recent visit to Islay. Food was very good and reasonably priced. Friendly staff with a good knowledge of the local whisky and gin.

Me and a friend visited The White Hart to dine food and drink some beer. The food we selected was delicious and the beer really good. If we will dine in Port Ellen again we will consider coming back to White Hart

Travelling through Scotland from Australia, we got to experience a variety of good quality from restaurants and venues. We only came here as the 'other' main restaurant in Port Ellen was fully booked with a wedding.We heard the only other customers talking about their food in a positive manner. We felt good about this..Ordered an entree and a main meal.Entree's - both meals were deep fried, and over cooked to the point of being un-edible. The smell suggested that the oil had not been changed in weeks. Couldn't eat- a bad start.Main- looked slightly better.. Tasted incredibly bad. Didn't think the main would be worse than the entree. One chicken meal was over cooked again. It was like eating a crispy battered brick. Unbelievable...The other meal was like a flavourless canned product of chicken stew poured over plastic rice..Again, we didn't finish..Such a disappointing experience. The staff looked like the local youth there.. Almost like hooligans. The bar girls were nice but it was certainly not a professional establishment as far as product, staff and atmosphere..Please don't go. Even our bed and breakfast hosts were surprised we ended up there. The venue is a NO GO ZONE amongst the locals of Port Ellen and frowned upon. The people reviewing good things about this venue either must work there or don't have come from a culture where food quality is important.1 star for effort.

Having got the evening ferry from Kennacraig, after a long day's cycle, the White Hart were really welcoming, with good beer and plentiful food, as well as the opportunity to wild camp just outside on the green overlooking the beach.

Service could have been better. Not much to choose from the menu. Priced a little much for the food selection offered.

We just popped in here for a vege burger and a burger. They didn't do vege burgers so I had something else, but my husband was very pleased with his burger as it was a very good size and well cooked. There were not many people in but the staff were pleasant and very helpful. I would definitely go back but I think they need a few more vege dishes. I am difficult as I hate pasta, but on the whole we thought the place well worth a visit.

Went for an evening meal, had very tasty burgers, plenty of food and very good quality. Staff were pleasant, there was one ale to try, so good at least for that, the place was very quiet on a Sat evening but therefore also cosy. Very good prices, we didn't wait long at all, and altogether were very happy with the choice.

The dining room overlooks the lovely bay, prompt, polite service, and good food at very reasonable prices.

I have a dream that one day every town will have fresh and local food sourced by those who think that visitors might like to know that there food is cooked by someone who actually cares. This place is a dump. it can't be bothered minimal service minimal decor everything minimal . We took one look at the menu for dinner and left to find a restaurant in Bowmore. Breakfast was a sad and solitary affair. the tea sits on a hot plate .. to much effort to give you a pot. And my favourite RANT.. stop having individual portions of butter marmalade marmite milk . evertime i see this stuff in a cafe or restaurant i think LANDFILL PLASTIC.. tragic

The outside appearance does not invite you in for a meal. We passed here a few times during our stay and did not see any sign of food going on. We went into the small bar for a drink which had some locals playing pool and enjoying a drink or two. The barmaid told us there was another bar which we went into for our next drink and found a large bar with menus offering everyday food at an affordable price which as a family of five with two growing boys was just right. The staff were friendly as is everyone on Islay. If you're hungry and eating out in Port Ellen, this is the place to go!

Food choices were standard Scottish pub fare but very reasonably priced and good quality. Some more modern decoration would brighten it up a bit.

By the time we went to this hotel for dinner it was the last day of our trip to Islay. Every dinner we had had till then was first class, no matter what we ate, so you can imagine our anticipation as we entered The White Hart. Unfortunately it did not live up to our expectations. The meal, starters, steak pie and gammon steak for the two mains for lack of better choices, were frankly barely average, though the sweets were good, earning the hotel the third star. It really was simply a pub meal when it was touted as better than that in the local brochures.

Lovely choice & large portions, don't let appearances of the hotel put you off. Someone had had an accident sawing a piece of something and had cut 6" into the table as well, made us laugh.

Not too bad, portions too big so don't bother with a starter un less you are really hungry! Make sure you get a table before 9.00 pm and be aware the Chef sometimes leaves early and then its the COOP for a seaside picnic with the midges!

The White Hart is an older hotel and based upon some of the reviews here, some visitors may have been put off by appearances. Certainly the 'pub' section serves as the local & I don't think they serve food. Venture a little further through the hotel entrance and you'll find a perfectly nice restaurant and whiskey tasting bar. The staff were welcoming and attentive, the food was just fine and while we did not indulge in the whiskey-tasting, other visitors seemed to be enjoying the selection. A comfortable way to spend a March evening by the fire on Islay.

This hotel has a good sized dining area so we had no trouble getting a table last minute. The food was very nice ( the fish was very fresh) and the service was good considering they were quite busy. Would definitely recommend as a nice cosy pub with good hearty food.

The place looks today as it probably did decades ago. The food also looks and tastes old style, not from a freezer or a pre cooked vendor. Or have they fooled me ? I would go back.

Really good value for money with local produce. The chef clearly took pride in the presentation of the food adding a more modern slant on some pub classics. We ate in the bar which would've been quite cosy if there was some background music on. It all just felt a bit like we shouldn't have been there. We didn't stay for another drink but went to the Islay Hotel for the rest of the evening

Das "White Hart" wurde von unserer B&B-Herbergsmutter empfohlen. Während das Ambiente rein äußerlich zunächst einen recht guten Eindruck hinterließ, wurde dieser recht bald durch das aufdringlich stickige Raumspray-Klima in der Gaststube getrübt. Die Qualität des Essens war recht unterschiedlich. Während der mit Cheddar überbackene "Black Pudding" wirklich gut war, versagte die Küche bei der Zubereitung eines "Medium"-Steaks auf ganzer Linie. Der schwerwiegendste Kritikpunkt betrifft ohne Zweifel die Servicebereitschaft des Personals. Die Kellnerin mussten wir von der Bar abholen, als wir noch ein paar Whiskys bestellen wollten. Diese wurden dann nicht nur in unterschiedlichen Gläsern, sondern auch in unterschiedlicher Füllhöhe serviert. Bezahlen konnten wir denn auch nur, indem wir einzeln an der Bar antrabten, da die junge Frau im Plausch mit ihren Freundinnen vertieft war. Ich wage auch sehr zu bezweifeln, dass die "Port Ellen-"Whiskyflaschen (wir haben ihn nicht probiert) echten Port Ellen enthielten.Die Preise waren verhältnismäßig moderat, jedoch hätten wir sicherlich mehr von dem nur wenig teureren Essen im "Islay Hotel" im die Ecke gehabt.

Das Essen war weder besonders schlecht, noch besonders gut. Was wirklich negativ auffiel, war der Service. Die Damen kannten sich überhaupt nicht aus, wurden patzig als wir eines der servierten Gerichte bemängelten .... und dann wurden uns die noch nicht geleerten Gläser vom Tisch abgeräumt. Scheinbar wollte man uns schnell loswerden, weil weitere Gäste auf einen Tisch gewartet haben.

My first evening in Islay I decided to have dinner at the White Hart Restaurant as I was staying at the hotel. I must say the atmosphere was not very quaint as I had hoped and the food was definitely not the best. The staff seemed pre-occupied with local gossip until someone (maybe a manager) arrived later and then service seemed to pick up later evening.

We only had a bowl of (homemade) soup and a chicken curry, but it was extremely tasty, good portions and very good value. The draft Islay real ale was a bonus (the other pubs only have it bottled out of season).

The food is good. The restaurant is kind of old and the staff is not very friendly. This might have something to do with us being 5 motorcyclist, all male, and away from our wives for a week... We might have been a bit to frank... Don't go to the bar, walk down the road and to the left, to the Ardview inn

Service was only average. It was a little slow, and the food although adequate was not inspiring. (Sorry folks)

Ate here last year and was pretty dissapointed with the food, but this year what a transformation. The food was tremendous particularly the steak which is one of the best I have ever tasted. Nice friendly staff and excellent food. Well worth a visit.

The food was delicious and portions were generous. There was a great view of the harbour. We had a bit of a wait for the food because it was very busy.

We ate here last year and again this year, food was excellent, well prepared and tasty, service was good. Prices are reasonable and I would without hesitation eat here again.

The food was at best average, at worst in edible. The waiters forgot items, got orders wrong and were generally unhelpful and could not have been more indifferent. Garlic mushrooms in puff pastry had no garlic and was swimming in gravy making the pastry soggy. One dessert ordered was Cranachen which contained raw oats and had be sent back. The sticky toffee pudding had been microwaved and was stone cold in places, tepid in others.Will not be returning.

The food at the White Hart was of a high standard and deserves a 4 star 'Very Good' rating, but the whole experience was just above 'Average'. Ate here with my parents on two different evenings and really enjoyed the food. Excellent 'hand dived' scallops, fresh from the Loch - best I've ever had. Unfortunately, whilst the staff were friendly, the service was lacking. On one evening after we were served I couldn't find anyone to order extra drinks from for 10 minutes. I even walked through the different bars and reception. All 4 serving staff must have been hiding in the kitchens. Another let down for me was the lack of real ales on offer, despite Islay having it's own brewery. Better service and a better range of drinks would have resulted in a 4 star review. I wouldn't discourage anyone from eating here, and the young staff were fine - the management need to just up their game a bit.

We wanted to go to the pub and have a pint and some food, but wouldn't go inside. The pub looked sketchy and there was really loud music spilling out the door. It's a shame because it looks like White Hart could be a great place. If you're a tourist, go to the Hotel Islay instead. Very classy.

Nice atmosphere, small in the bar section, cozy cozy. Dinner was simple yet wonderful and I highly recommend the sticky toffee cake for dessert

I, along with some friends tried the restaurant after hearing of a new chef. The food was excellent with calm surroundings and fast service.will certainly be back.

The atmosphere was great and the food was good. The service was really wonderful. We really liked this place.
