Visited today and had special x 2. Beautiful thick pieces of cod in light batter, chips, mushy peas, fresh bread, and 2 pots of coffee that held 2 cups each, freshly cooked and piping hot. Delicious and cooked to perfection. Great service and a warm welcome too. Would definitely visit again.

A friend had told me about this restaurant as she new we were going for the day. What a total disappointment ... I should have read the recent reviews. There was a strange aroma when we went in which I found slightly off putting and my 8 year old was very vocal. We sat downstairs which had an odd set up of some large long tables. I found it odd that you could purchase a takeaway and eat it upstairs (we didn't venture up there). The food came very quickly and was hot. We ordered a kids sausage and chips and I went for the fish special. The chips were ok, bread was not the best quality but passable, the mushy peas were tastless, the tea was wet ... BUT the fish/batter was disgusting. It smelt as if the batter had SOURED and gone off. I only managed to eat a small bit from both ends before feeling sick. The aroma was off putting. The fish was very moist and spongy in texture. The batter was slightly undercooked but I don't think this was the main issue. I passed a comment and complained when I paid but all that was said was we would have put it back in the fryer ... I'm not a fussy eater and will eat most things (I even asked to take away my daughters chips which she didn't eat).

Whelans fish and chips used to be lovely. Not been for a long time but decided to call in for tea. Ordered large haddock which came in three separate pieces, one of these pieces appeared to be the tail end broken off a ready cooked piece of fish and all three pieces tasted totally different. Chips were like frozen oven chips and the mushy peas just hard and cold. The homemade tartare sauce was just mayo with a couple of bits of something thrown in. Clearly the place has either been taken over by new owners or the old owner really couldn't care less about their business. I don't think they shoukd be using Rick Stein & Gordon Ramsey to advertise their fish and chips - I think they would both be disgusted.

Whelans used to have an excellent reputation for fish and chips, so much so it was rated by Rick Stein and Gordon Ramsey, I don’t believe they would put their names to it now unfortunately. The lady and man behind the counter were lovely and I’m thinking it’s not their own business. But however owns it needs to take a serious look at the quality of the food they are selling. The peas were cold. The chips were poor quality potatoes, the fish was fresh but batter not good at all. Bread and butter very poor quality and dry. Such a shame because Lytham High street is making a great effort to attract visitors. Sadly we won’t be buying food from their again. Feel really sad about this and urge the owners to re look at their business.

For the third time we have gone to whelans and closed 15 minutes before the advertised closing Time 7.30pmon a Sunday we arrived at 7.12 pm ll cleaned down closed sign in door but the lights full on On average we spend around £1000.plus per year snhame they do not value there regular customers especially out if season I sirry but we will start trying other fish and chip shops that are more willing to serve Look after your regular customers

Average food. Small fish with batter not sticking to the fish and greasy chips. Not good. They should be doing better than this and the service wasn’t good.

Takeaways usually good but today just awful. Should have said something whilst they were wrapping soggy, greasy chips and fish all squashed together. Mushy peas cold and homemade tartare sauce has too much mayonnaise. I won’t be going back. The girl who served me could clearly see as I could how awful the food looked.

Called I'm for a Family of 4 for our Lancashire Fish n Chip Experience Had a quick look at the restaurant but decided because it appeared to be quite dark and no atmosphere we would have a takeaway. 4 Fish&Chips with side order of 2 mushy Peas Came to £40. Which was excellent. Whelans Lytham did not disappoint.

We have been coming here for years and enjoy the food. Main reason for posting a review is to compliment the waitress who served us tonight for the way she helped a very elderly customer who was on the next table. The gentleman was struggling with his mobility and also his hearing which meant he needed a lot of time and patience. He was treated with a great deal of respect and empathy which was great to see.

Very disappointed, food very average and pale. Very dark in the restaurant, young staff require customer service training. They all look mistable and not engaging at all. Felt everything was too much trouble. Wont be going again despite having been on a few occasions

Awful place. Quite possibly the worst service I’ve ever had, waitress was exceptionally rude, barely spoke just grunted at us. Greasy chips and more batter than fish, cold mushy peas. Don’t waste your money.

The chips were truly dreadful - just mush. They managed to both overcook the fish and yet have great clumps of undercooked batter - how do they do it. Sitting in my stomach like a brick.

If only I had read the reviews before visiting last week! It’s been a family tradition to go to Whelans for fish and chips but through illness haven’t visited for a few years. I just couldn’t believe where I was eating and what I was eating. The original Whelans and English owners no longer there, the place was so dark inside couldn’t read the menu and that was lunchtime. Then the food arrived, swimming in grease, tiny fish, lots of batter and could only eat a few chips as they had bad bits on them all. The bread must have been days old it was that dry. Left most of it and my auntie was very ill that evening. Avoid at all costs, I was so disappointed, just wished I’d read the reviews before I went.

The worst customer service I have ever had! We went tonight 31st may, as a family of 6, grandparents, parents and children as a treat. Our family ordered and had to wait around 45 mins for food. Firstly, after about 10 mins we got cold drinks and an individual pot of tea despite the fact we should have had 4 pots of tea, or tea for 4! We then got our order delivered around another 35 mins with errors, and items missing and when we tried to ask the staff for the correct order we were met with very rude behaviour. The original waitress was very polite, but the second waitress was exceptionally rude, saying they were busy and understaffed, she was not our server so didn’t know what was wrong with the order. I then tried to explain main meals come with hot drinks and whatever else was missing she was dismissive and rude. I said that a simple apology that there was delay/ items missing would have been nice! When the food did arrive we were still missing items, but I couldn’t be bothered to ask for them, the batter was greasy, the haddock felt soapy and the chips were also quite soggy! I felt embarrassed and very shocked to be treated in such a way. If the staff cannot cope with the restaurant and take away then maybe they should decide which option they should offer. We had been away in the lakes and had stopped off in Lytham on our way home, it really did spoil the trip. The manager to be honest was very apologetic and did reduce the bill considerably, but the rudeness from the older server left me shaking! So unacceptable in front of my children!! DO NOT BOTHER!!! If I could zero star I would!

This restaurant was once a shining star in Lytham, but it shines no longer. Very poor quality control, hard peas, greasy fish, not so fresh. It is a great shame as I miss it;s once stellar performance.

Not been for a couple of years,was passing at 5pm so thought as the sun was shining,would sit outside to have some fish and chips,Upon ordering,the service was good,ordered a regular fish,chips and regular curry,the meal was cooked to order,the fish tasted really good and was lightly battered which is the way I like it,the chips were plentiful and were great,and the curry sauce very tasty,the cost of around £9 is reasonable in today's economic climate,and in comparison to other chip shops I have visited recently was excellent,a d I would definitely visit again,and I live locally too which is an advantage.

Oh my god what can I say, how people are queuing up for this is beyond me. I know I did it, but never again. What a total rip off, £25.95 for 2 fish and chips, 2 small peas and 2 small curries, 1 fish cake and 3 cans. absolutely disgusting. I am not saying the food wasn't edible because it was, however totally overpriced. The fish was supposed to be regular, however I have seen bigger fish on children's meals, if you get the small fish, they look like fish fingers. Just drive 2 miles up the coast and get the same meals but bigger and half the price. They are living off their appearance of Gordon Ramsey and Rick Stein over 2 decades ago. Travelled from Manchester as we'd always loved this chip shop, absolutely terrible service and food, tiny tray of fish bites and chips and 2 absolutely tiny wet pieces of fish bite included, pies fell apart and soggy as had been microwaved.... £20 and a long drive wasted, sadly, as this has always been my favourite fish and chip shop, wouldn't even give the pies to our dog!

Visit here regular. Even come from Burnley (40 miles) especially to visit lytham and this chip shop. Only had the takeaway but never had anything other than excellent food and service. Some of the reviews are very surprising. The quality is first class and definitely worthy of the Rick stein and Gordon Ramsey recommendations. The fish is delicious and the curry sauce is proper chip shop curry sauce which you rarely get now. Our young kids (one of whom is quite fussy) demolished the lot and wanted more. I ordered a large portion for myself and it looked a fair size - but the manager insisted on putting another fish on as he wasn’t happy with the size! He really didn’t need to do that but that’s the sign of great customer service. Been four times recently and will be sure to visit every time we visit lytham. A nice treat and great quality.

Excellent fish and chips. Really rate this place on quality and we often travel a long way for this treat. Same quality as ever this evening, however we were served by Vitali, who is the rudest and most unhelpful of staff. Aside to his rudeness, he carries a look about him that makes you feel like you’ve just ruined his evening, by mere entering the premises.

I was a bit sceptical about visiting Wheelans as there have been some poor reviews recently.I was pleasantly surprised to find the fish and chips were perfectly cooked and very tasty.Some of the negative comment were aimed at the staff.The chap serving, does come over as a little abrupt, however he was very helpful, so i guess it's just his personality.There has either been some vast improvements ,or some people have a vendetta?

Went here on a recommendation not sure how long ago they last visited as after our visit here we would definitely NOT recommend it. You would think with the awards and most of the pictures on here that you couldn't go wrong but it was small, thin, greasy fish even the xl fish was small. Left us still hungry and unimpressed

We visited Lytham on Sunday 13th September and decided we’d share a large fish, chips and peas. My boyfriend went in to order as only one person per household allowed in. He said he was serve by a gentleman behind the counter who seemed like the owner. He was so rude, constantly shouting at his staff, not very pleasant with the customer, no directions as what to do. I waited outside and managed to get a table, however the tables were filthy, not cleaned after each customer so we decided to go and sit along the front instead. The food itself was just ok, I found very bland and no taste to it really. I was really disappointed as we go to Lytham a lot and always said we’d try this particular fish and chips shop. Maybe we just went on a busy day and the service, food was poor! However it’s put me off going again

Called here with mum for a chippy tea and it did not disappoint. The staff were polite but not very switched on to customers needs. The staffs command of English was good but not perfect. The food however was very good, I had the Whelans special which came with a pot of tea, coffee or a soft drink and a slice of brown or white bread. It was very good. Is this the best chippy in town? The jury is out.

The worst customer service I have ever experienced. Shouting at customers for no reason. No please or thank you. Saying 'oi' 'come here'. No direction on what to do and felt very uncomfortable. The worst food as well, honestly avoid at all cost!!!!!!

I can only presume this has a new owner, like many previous reviews this USED to me one of my top 5 for fish and chips in the country, so disappointed. Smaller portions for the same price, fish greasy, husband made me try his bread and butter, it had a nasty taste so he left it. None of the staff were rude but I would say they are off hand. This place is surviving on it's reputation and that won't last for long. Such a pity.

Staff were horrendous today- no customer service skills at all. Staff spoke to a gentleman next to me extremely rudely and was less than polite and friendly to me with other comments also being made about customers outside by staff members. I've been going to Whelans for years- always amazing food in the past- recommendations from Rick Stein and Gordon Ramsay are many many many many years ago do don't be drawn in by them.I've eaten both inside and takeaway and have always made a point of going there in the past when visiting Lytham- not any more.I would suggest other fish and chip shops in the town as better options now- passed on my poor experience to Lytham relatives who agreed things definitely gone downhill.

This has always been my favourite chippy and I reserve a visit for special occasions as its a little more expensive than other chippys. I must say I was disappointed. The chips were soggy, the fish was incredibly greasy and covered in oil which hadn't been cleaned and the peas tasteless. Not sure what has happened here but I certainly won't be visiting again any time soon.

My husband and myself have eaten at Whelans for over 10 years when we go out for the day to Lytham. Over those years our meals have sometimes been very good and other times not as good. The problem is normally the batter on the fish which sometimes is not crispy often hardly any batter at all. Yesterday we visited after over a years absence and the establishment looks like it has changed hands and the old familiar friendly waiting staff are no longer there. Firstly the bread tasted as if it was stale and I couldn't eat it and had to remove it form my mouth, it was awful. Then our regular battered cod, it was tasty but both pieces rather small and thin and mine hardly any batter at all so I could see the fish. My husbands was better but still not much batter. The chips were plentiful and very tasty. Normally the waiter asks if our food was ok but no one did nor did they ask my husband when he paid. Very disappointing and sad at the decline. Next time we will go to Thornton Cleveleys as we have been to excellent fish and chip restaurants there, fish in lovely crisp batter and always friendly customer service.

Called for lunch yesterday having visited about 8 years ago.Was going to order medium haddock and tea has was my wife.Waitress kindly pointed out the seniors haddock whic included tea or coffee and bread and butter. Worked out quite a bit cheaper Have to say our food was excellent. Walked through in as door was open and people in queue only to be barked at by owner / manager that he was shut. Ermm well why is the door open, people in shop and food on the counter. Felt embarresed being spoken to in such a manner in front of other customers and left. Will never be giving him my customer again. Also telling everyone I know same. Judging by other reviews its not an isolated case. Now always go to Seniors. Excellent food and friendly staff who serve with courtesy and a smile. You need to review your customer service Mr Whelan. Whelans was always a safe bet. Good service and top class food. BUT NOW it's run by rude staff. Food absolutely awful and much smaller portions and very greasy and soggy . So sad when the original owners had such a great reputation.

Oh dear!! I have visited here so many times before and always had THE best fish and chips. Our last visit was so disappointing. Soggy fish, soggy chips, tiny portions same high price (which was previously worth paying) and part of our order was not provided (but still charged for). Will keep an eye on the reviews and will not return until it changes

Had high hopes having seen long ques here most nights but sadly so dissapointed. The fish was soggy and barely battered and the chips half cooked. Wouldn't be far off saying worst I've ever had... Won't be coming back.

I have visited here many times and always tell family and friends to go here when in the stea as its superb place for fish and chips. Not anymore. Busted today, with my daughter and grandchildren, very happy to queue. Totally understand they must have been very busy, HOWEVER therudesness if the staff member who served me was astounding. The fish batter was undercooked the chips barely cooked, no salt even though it was requested. I note from other reviews the rudeness and sbruptness of staff has been mentioned before. Here is one family who will not return.Not happy at work? get another job.
