We have eaten at Whelan’s for many years and always tell friends and family to try it, as we have never had a bad meal there yet. Today as we were queuing for our fish and chips, a lady came in and said she found a large black hair in her rock hard chips that even her hungry kids had refused to eat them. I thought you always get one that wants to complain, but when ours came we took them outside as we always do . The chips were well under done and rock hard, and the fish was well under done and anaemic with no batter on at all. I went back and told them that the standards have dropped dramatically. and he offered to make me some more. It put us off and probably won’t go back.

We ate here last Friday , a group of four . We all had fish ,chips and peas . The fish was greasy on the outside and soggy in the middle .. Chips were pretty tasteless..not cooked in quality oil . Peas ok .. tomato sauce was cheap quality. We asked to eat upstairs..it’s roomier and has natural light from the windows . It was closed so we had to eat downstairs..cramped and gloomy . The girls serving were pleasant and polite. Unfortunately I think this restaurant is trading on its famous clients from days gone by .. Perhaps Gordon Ramsey needs to revisit..I’m pretty sure he would have something to say ! Sorry but this is my opinion..but I know good fish and chips when I eat them ..unfortunately it wasn’t for me .

I searched the internet for fish and chip shops with good reviews. Gordon Ramsey visited 20 years ago and this is still being used as advertising. I don’t feel the fish and chips continue to warrant the praise he gave at that time. The batter was thin but soggy underneath the fish and although it had a nice taste initially quickly became a disappointment. I have had worse but these could be so much better.

I've been coming here for most of my 60 years - since long before the present owners took it. Back in the early 70s, a fish & chip meal, with a beverage and bread, was around 60p!! I paid £11.75 yesterday for a crisply battered large cod, chips and peas, with bread and coffee. The place is slightly more refined than it was 50 years ago, the décor improved, but the food still as good. The piping hot meal was welcome at the end of a cold windy morning.

That was what went all over my pants in the car when we went for fish and chips here in November this year. That was both fish, which were very dry and very measly portions for an extra large fish. The chips were very greasy and peas tasteless. I'm sorry but Gordon Ramsey would be horrified with your offerings at present.

After an evening run along the front with our running club, 18 of us turned up on Friday evening to have fish and chips after our exercise. We have eaten at Whelans many time sin the past but when we turned up their response was , we've only 4 portions of chips ready and we are shutting after that. They couldn't be bothered, given the queue out of the door, to get some and cook some more. to say that this was awful service is an understatement. I can only give one star for everything as we didn't have the chance to eat their fish and chips due to their attitude, we estimnate they lost over £150 that night, Luckily a local pointed us to Lytham fisheries round the corner where we had excellent service, superb fish and chips and at a better price. Guess where our running club will head to in the future. We have no affiliation with any of the businesses in Lytham - just a very disappointed customer.

Chips are ok but the 2 men behind the counter had awful customer service. Not polite, no please or thank you. The staff looked very unwelcoming and especially the older bald guy - he couldn’t crack a smile. Don’t treat the customers nice and we won’t come back.

I’ve been here a few times now. They’re always open and have additional seating upstairs, including catering for slightly larger parties. The food is fresh and nice and the staff are really friendly and accommodating. Well worth a visit.

Walked round the corner to Whelans for the first time and got 2 large Cod, large chips, peas and curry for £12.75 The fish was meaty and the batter nice and light. Curry sauce full of flavour. Peas are peas haha. Would definitely go back there!

I've not bothered going to the Lytham branch for a few years as I've always been let down by the quality of the fish. We've been going to the Warton branch and can say that whilst i'm sure that the fish is bought from the same supplier, it just seems better quality at Warton. The staff are always friendly and aren't shy with their portions. I'm a very happy chappy now that I've got the best Chippy back on my doorstep.

Driving back from Blackpool googled fish and chips Lytham popped up. Called in with my 85 year old mum. Ate in the dinning room on the ground floor - a tad snug ! Service was quick and efficient but a little cold. Had OAP haddock and chips , steak and pepper pie chips and peas tea for two Great food a and bargain @ £13.50 for the two of us. Would definitely call again when passing.

I organised a trip for 18 people to the lights at Blackpool with a stop off for fish & chips . We chose Whelans and I am so glad we did as I am not a lover of fish & chips but ended up eating all mine !! . We arrived early but they were ready for us , every thing was served very quickly and was hot . the menu is very extensive ..lots of choices with bread & butter ,tea and coffee included .I don't think anybody had any complaints to make ,we were all very happy with our meals ,the staff were very friendly and the costs were ideal

Gordon Ramsay needs to go back here and kick some bottom! Seriously! You can if you wish sit at the table next to the Toilet Door which obviously is very busy. It squeaks as one would expect from the frequency of use.

Not only were the fish, chips and mushy peas cooked to perfection but they were really fresh. In fact it's a long time since I've tasted such fresh haddock from a takeaway. My husband said that his meat pie, chips and gravy was very good as well. The service was also good. All the personnel were dressed smartly in black and the man who served us was friendly and polite. I'll definitely go there again next time I want a fish and chip meal while in Lytham.

Called in for a large bag of chips ( £2.00 ) to eat on the way back to the car after a lovely walk around Lytham. Boss bloke asked a member of staff to put in another basket of chips so as not to keep us waiting. No sooner had the lady put the chips in to cook she then pulled them out and placed them in the serving tray, semi cold / semi cooked. We must have got the semi cold ones, not nice and not edible. Wasted money and time. Will not be calling back that's for sure!

I ordered a small cod and chips with mushy peas, but the fish that arrived was the thinnest ever and the batter was none existant. As for the chips, well these were mainly ok though some had bits of black on them. However the mushy peas were stone cold. This is a real disappointment as both my husband and I had been coming here for over 6 years. Whelan's has gone up and down and sadly this year for our visit anyway way down again. Can someone at Whelan's please take note, the manager or owner and improve the standard to what it should be.. Fish in batter should be just that with crispy golden batter, something that was missing on mine and my husband's fish.

This fish and chips takeaway is just up the road from us on very handy. We've had many takeaways. The fish and chips are excellent. The pies are heated in the microwave and are not very good because the pastry is soft. The mushy peas are a bit too mushy for me but that's just my taste.

They seem to have addressed the 'Fake' Haddock since my last visit so I am pleased with that result. However, what I have found is that over a period of a few months the portion sizes have reduced to around a half of what they were previously.I've always mentioned this to the staff and have been told various reasons for this but whilst the fish is tasty here it will not hit the spot if you are hungry due to the tiny size of the large haddock.Such a shame but I guess they don't have to care as plenty of passing business.

Positioned directly outside a major employer in the area and when its good, its good. I visit every week with my work colleagues and of late the size of a large fish is very similar to that of a medium/small one from a few months ago. We always ask for Haddock and we are all agreed that 2 out of 5 visits always leaves us questioning the quality of the fish. On those occasions, the fish does not look, smell nor taste like Haddock and we are certain a 'white' fish substitute is served. If it is advertised as Haddock then a cheap alternative should not be used. I know as I've been eating this fish for years. Such a shame. #FakeHaddock!

Long wait on a Sunday, so at least it was open. Staff under pressure but trying. Advertised scampi as local but saw it coming out of a packet. Similarly 'home-made' tartare sauce. But worst fish and chips I have had up north. No battered sausage so had to have gravy which was disgusting. No packet vinegar for take-away. Portions so small we had to have a curry after!

We've had Whelans chips before and liked them, imagine discovering a Whelans in my home town after a 250 mile drive to visit relatives. Proper Northern chips and gravy! They were terrible, tasteless and bland, the gravy looked promising, dark and thick, however, it was also tasteless. The staff were grumpy with insufficient grasp of the English language to converse other than "salt and vinegar?" I never thought I'd say it, but chippies in the South are better
