Fabulous food in a very busy Wheatsheaf on Saturday 24th May 2025. A super new menu with some value favourites such as fish, chips ‘n mushy peas and some new interesting mains such as cheese soufflé and individual steak pies. A great atmosphere with a lively buzz! Definitely going back again VERY soon! 😋

We stayed in April 2025 having booked through booking.com. Bit of a mixed review overall. This pub is no longer to be found on 'booking.com' and their own website does not allow room booking online as yet - all the dates on it currently come up as unavailable so we are not sure how you book now unless it's directly by phone perhaps. It has been under new ownership since Feb 2025. Unlike our previous times here we were disappointed to learn breakfast is no longer included in the price of the room making it a tad more expensive, something which we only found out on arrival. We were offered but declined a continental style breakfast and decided not to ask the price after we realised the price of the sunday roast was on the upper end of the scale. We had originally booked through booking.com and at the time had booked a meal for 7.15 on the first night, a Sunday. On arrival we were told they knew nothing of this and would stop serving food at 6pm. We duly came down in good time and had an expensive sunday roast. The food quality matched the prices however and was delicious, professionally cooked and beautifully presented. There seems to be some sort of communication problem with booking.com/new owners as although our booking was honoured some changes were not communicated to us e.g. no breakfast included and our meal not being actually booked. We have put this down to 'teething problems'. The staff were very all pleasant. Room was smallish but recently decorated. Bed very comfortable but disappointingly our room service was overlooked on one day of our stay. The actual location is in a lovely small quiet village and well situated for visiting the area.

Country pub with relaxed atmosphere & Dog friendly too - The food is fabulous! Great flavours and generous portions - the steak pie ‘for two to share’ is very rich - enough to feed three! Waiting staff are friendly and attentive, without being overbearing. Beer is also good. Booking.com’s system messed up our reservation, but the manager did everything he could to resolve this - service from him was great. The room was nicely decorated, with crisp white bed linen and the bed was very comfortable, but little things like the toilet roll holder hanging off the wall and the miniature shower gel being half used took the fifth star away. Shame the details were missing. There is no information in the room about breakfast service, reviews looked like a great breakfast option was on offer, but we were surprised on a Saturday morning at 9:35 to be told that breakfast service was 8:30 to 9:30, so it had finished/we were too late and that there wasn’t any hot-food option - best to check if you want breakfast?!

When we arrived the staff didn't acknowledge us.. But they were busy so we let this go... But a simple we'll be with u shortly woukd have done it... But once we had their attention they were friendly and attentive and funny ... Myself and my group of 4 sat and had a few drinks before our meal... We were shown to our table and we chose from the set Sunday menu.... Soup and ham Hock terrain for starters... All delicious and then 4 roast dinners for main... 2 beef.. 1 chicken breast and 1 pork with crackling.. absolute perfection on a plate....👌 Served with mash and roast potatoes.. Parsnips.. Mange tout... Broccoli... Turnip and carrot and cauli cheese.. And a huge Yorkie pud... The only down side to the meal for me. Was that the cauliflower cheese was luke warm... But that aside evething was delicious.... No room for dessert as we were stuffed... If u haven't been here for food then why the hell not!!!!!!..... We will definitely be going back and they do deals every day of the week.... So get urself there... Thank you to the Wheatsheaf Brigsteer team....ur chef is the dogs bi!!0cks 👍

New staff member struggled to acknowledge us at the bar. Asked us to sit down, but we wanted a drink. Seemed flustered trying to open a bottle of wine for ten minutes.

Stayed here one night. The food was amazing and absolutely delicious and the service in the bar was great. Sadly the rooms were really not value for money. Loved that they had a fridge in the corridor for water and milk, but the room was really small, the toilet roll holder was hanging off the wall, and the doors in the shower cubicle wouldn’t open far enough to actually fit me in. A slim / regular sized person would be fine. But anyone bigger than average size just cannot shower. The opening was the length of elbow to wrist (about 35cm) and it just wasn’t enough. Mentioned when checking out and they assumed it was a problem with the doors (we explained there wasn’t and there was simply no more space for the door to open) rather than accepting that their showers are just not accessible for larger people. Strangely there was absolutely enough room in the bathroom for a proper shower cubicle, so it doesn’t make sense to have such a small one. Might visit again for food, but definitely won’t stay here again.

We chose the 12 course meal with an added course and dessert, and it was worth every penny! Every plate was beautifully plated, and phenomenal. The head chef, James came out to explain several of the dishes in detail, from what makes the ingredient unique, to how it was sourced and prepared. The explanations of every dish made this a fascinating experience that set it apart from other Michelin restaurants since it’s never the chef, and the plates are not always explained in detail. The other servers/chef were all kind and friendly as well. We also loved how certain ingredients were paired with preparations that you would never think of, such as pea miso or barley koji. Being Japanese, I loved how old Japanese methods were used on untypical ingredients. Lastly, James and Darren (sommelier) chose a few wines for us, and they went perfectly with our meal. The wine pairing would be a good choice at this restaurant. The dishes are spaced with enough time that you wouldn’t have to rush drinking every glass, and their wines are incredible. If you are visiting Ambleside, this restaurant is a must! It was the highlight of our time in the UK, and will definitely be back if we’re ever in Ambleside again.

We stayed at the site over the bank holiday weekend and visited the pub a few times for drinks—each visit was a great experience! On Monday evening, we decided to have dinner, and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. While there were some gluten-free options on the menu (mostly meat-based), the team let us know that with a bit of advance notice, they could offer more variety. The chef even kindly offered to make a gluten-free carbonara—something not on the menu—which my mum ordered and really enjoyed. We all had different dishes, and every single one was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend this lovely pub (and the campsite)!
