We had a lovely 2 night stay at the Inn for our wedding anniversary. The room was perfect with a large comfy bed and all facilities. Chris was super welcoming and a great host, and thanks to Liv our waitress. We had dinner in the restaurant both nights as the food was so good on the first night. I had the fish and chips, and as we are from the East Neuk of Fife where fish and chip restaurants regularly with awards, I have to say it was the best fish and chips I have ever had, compliments to the chef! Lorraine had it on night 2 and 100% agreed. All the food was superb, and a special mention to the excellent Merlot :-) Other than the weather, which apparently the Inn can't control, the stay was amazing. Thanks again.

Great food and loved the decor. Our food was very good - Beef Burgundy, with homemade rolls and butter. The only downside was we weren’t sat in dining room, but in a well-appropriated den like room. We were dressed appropriately and not sure why we were not sat in dining room..

I am reviewing the Restaurant in this post having also enjoyed a two night stay. The evening meal came as part of the generous package of Two course dinner when booking the room. Reception was extremely friendly and the comprehensive menu was brought to our pre prandial seats in the Bar in front of a roaring log fire. The menu was a delight to the eye and very comprehensive with, I am sure, something for everyone's taste. I am a fan of duck dishes and the starter the first evening was a 'duck' salad with rocket. Not what I would have normally combined but I gave it a go and have no regrets. My wife had the garlic mushrooms and says the same. For mains I thought to avoid the 'usual offerings', Steak, Fish and Chips, Burgers etc.., and went for the Butternut Squash and Spinach Risotto as, although I AM carnivorous by nature, I wanted a change. It was gorgeous and just enough. Not overfacing at all and yet not 'twee' in presentation. My wife had chicken and reports well on it. All washed down with a lovely Tempranillo from a limited but wide ranging list. No desserts. Gulp. I would have loved the mixed fruit crumble with custard but there was no room left. A good excuse to go back. Next evening was the same routine. I noted Crayfish as a starter and having been re-assured this was not just a fancy name for Prawn cocktail it was ordered. My wife had chicken liver pate with no regrets but I had to offer a Crayfish nibble to assuage her curiosity. We both confirmed how good it was. For mains I determined to try the Risotto again and this choice was also taken up by my wife. We both loved it. Ten out of ten. Again it went with another bottle of Tempranillo. And, sadly, again no Fruit Crumble was tried although it was offered. Memo to self. Go back soon and often. This place is too good to miss out on for long. Two of the nicest dining out experiences I have had in a long time. Not too fancy and pretentious but just good honest food, well cooked and presented.

The Wheasheaf Hotel occupies pride of place on the Main Street of the little vilage of Swinton in the Borders. The Sunday Lunch menu provided an aray of pub standards including roast pork and roast beef. There is a suite of starters and an array of desserts (Bailey's Cheesecake was smooth and creamy) from which to choose. Prices are moderate and the meals well presented. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the facilities comfortable and spacious. All staff were masked, and masks were supplied for customers to move through the building.

Having recently moved to the Borders we decided it was time to try the oft recommended Wheatsheaf as we worked our way around the local restaurant's. Arriving on Saturday evening we were shown to a small bar area to have an aperitif whilst waiting for our table. When we were seated at our table we had our starters and main course. I won’t bore you with an in-depth examination of the food suffice to say it was phenomenal probably helped it was washed down by a gorgeous wee bottle of seldom encountered Beaujolais Nouveau! The food was second only to another local hostelry. Staff were attentive without being intrusive and the decor and overall ambience was spot on in my opinion. One small minor observation which is a personal bugbear :the time between starter and main course was far too short, would prefer 15/20 mins to savour the first course. This seems to be very common in restaurants in the Borders which I don’t quite understand as surely you want customers to stay as long as possible and spend more money??? Other than that it was a great evening rounded off by a few ales in Duns. A fantastic culinary experience to be recommended we will definitely be back. Better brush up on your German Michael :-)

The dinner and breakfast at the Wheatsheaf were excellent and we would definitely eat here again The service was also first class The room did not come up to the same standard we were put in a room with an accessible bathroom which was essentially a wet room We feel that on booking the staff should have pointed this out to us as it spoilt our stay Everything got soaked and there was very little space to put anything and the floor was still wet in the morning from the night before I was concerned about slipping and had to use towels to make it safe Avoid room 8 unless you want a wet room with an unprotected shower The bed was creaky and uncomfortable and the duvet did not have a cover on but a flat sheet I hate this either use a duvet or sheets and blankets It concerned me as clearly the duvet isn’t washed every guest and a sheet moves unless tucked in so this in my opinion was unhygienic There were no tissues in the room to remove make upI had to use toilet tissue and the shortbread biscuits mentioned on the website were nowhere to be seen Such a shame the rooms are not up to the sameStandard as food and drinkOffer

My step father, who has a small appetite and is put off by large portions, asked for a small fish and chips and that is what he got. It's so nice when people listen to these requests. We were staying at Duns castle and they generally do not serve dinner there, unless you made previous catering arrangements, so the owners suggested this lovely little restaurant. It is right on the border of England and Scotland. I had the mussels and they were very good, the rest of the company had select dinners that were not out of this world but average. It is a really cute little place and really the only place in Swinton, so being it is out in the country, we did not have great expectations but it was good

We had seen written reviews of the wheatsheaf inn and also told in person that this was an excellent eatery. We were a group of four and three of our meals were what I would call a couple of mouthfuls!!!!!!I had the tiniest bit of salmon on a bed of basmati rice ( couple of spoonfuls) with three tiny tomatoes on top. Tasteless My friend had the duck which was about 3 small mouthfuls and what looked like a spoonful of fancy potato no veg.My husband the chicken with one florette of cauliflower and 4 new potatoes and a small amount of sauce. Chicken was very dry and found it hard to eat.The only person who got a decent meal was our other friend who had the sirloin steak!!!!We were going to have dessert and coffees but because of the main course decided against it.So disappointed!!!!!!!!!

The staff at this small pub-hotel near the Scottish / English border are charming, and the place is welcoming (including to dogs). The evening menu is fairly limited but suggests some ambition, particularly with a starter that combines scallops, black pudding and samphire. Sadly, the expectation was greater than the execution: the black pudding was delicious but the samphire was cooked to the point of losing taste and the scallops were bathed in too much oil. Some of the mains were not available the evening we passed through, so I went for a simple sirloin steak sandwich. I did not expect great things and could even imagine how a little fat might add to its succulence, but the proportion of that to meat was just too high. This, though, is judging a place on only one outing, and what was clear was that it was a cosy venue with a wide array of drinks and helpful owners to guide you through what was on offer. So, there is a lot to like, as long as you do not expect top-notch cuisine.

Been to the wheatsheaf four times and thought it was fantastic the first three times so was looking forward to Sunday lunch in pleasant surroundings. What a letdown from the slightly off tasting cod to a side dish of undercooked curly kale.Has anyone ever had kale as a veg trust me don't try it.On paying the bill was asked if I had enjoyed it I replied no but that it was maybe just not my cup of tea and was told well you should of had the beef.Thought we were just unlucky but spoke to an acquaintance today and asked what they thought about the quality and content of the meal they had there last week. They like ourselves had championed the wheatsheaf as the place to eat in the Borders and all I can say is they like ourselves won't be back there. We might after a fairly long time return to see if the food has improved back to its previous high standard of cuisine but if it has not significantly improved we will vote with our feet

My wife and I had a midweek lunch here to celebrate my birthday, and found it very good indeed. We have been coming here since the 1980s, when it was owned and run by Alan & Julie Reid and was absolutely superb - sadly, when they left it went horrendously downhill in terms of the quality both of the food and of the service, and we stopped using it! However, since the present proprietors took it on we have found the standard consistently high, both for small intimate occasions and for big parties, and in our estimation it is not far off the standard achieved by the Reids. Definitely recommended.

Great menu, beautifully presented food and wonderful service.Travelling for the first time with our dog we have been looking for places we can take him whilst we eat and this place came up in our searches. After dining we would recommend without the dog friendly attitude as the food is fantastic and the welcome warm. What a find!

This was a really nice Hotel where we travelled from Galashiels to have a delicious meal this Saturday - we went to the Conservatory where you have excellent views over the local Green - the décor is excellent and to a high standard , the Hotel is really well run , and the staff are very helpful and pleasant - there was a coal fire which made it even more nicer to enjoy the day - for starter we both had the vegetable soup - I had a wonderful Battered Fish and my wife had the Shoulder of Lamb - with drinks and a cappuccino the total bill came to £ 50 , and it was well worth it if you stayed here for a night or two , I would recommend you have your own transport and also make sure you have a book to read , as there is not much to do in Swinton - otherwise I think it would be a lovely Hotel to stay in the Rooms look lovely ( I looked through the open door of one room as it was being cleaned )

Booked an Itison deal for four of us. It was a wee bit more expensive than others we had done recently but well worth it. We had a deluxe double bedroom each which was so clean and comfy and a good size with a lovely en-suite. The towels and bed linen were of a very high quality. The tea and coffee making facilities provided everything you could want including some beautiful shortbread. The lounge/bar area is peaceful and very relaxing, especially in front of the open log fire. The food served at dinner was exquisite. Could not fault it. There was an extensive menu for breakfast and this again was just perfect. Will definitely go back

My wife & I live in the village, so have lunched/dined at The Wheatsheaf on countless occasions over the past 11 years or so.On the spur of the moment, we decided to head along for lunch on Thursday 22 December, for the first time since the new owner (Michael) & his team took over.We received a genuinely warm welcome from Ann, who took our drinks order and selection from the menu, before serving our meal, with a genuinely friendly/polite/fun manner, which made the whole experience very enjoyable. My wife chose the traditional Christmas main course of roast turkey and all the trimmings, which was very nicely presented and delicious.I started with king prawn linguini, which was absolutely superb, one of the best starters I've tasted in a long time! Perfectly cooked prawns (cut so as to spiral) and pasta, in a stunningly light & tasty tomato sauce (it'll be my main course on our next visit). I followed it with an 8oz "Gilmour" fillet steak (cooked rare/very rare) which was to die for, as it was cooked to perfection. The menu was essentially the same as it has been for a while now, but the quality & presentation of the dishes has taken a step up.There were eight other diners, all of whom provided Michael & Ann with similar feedback to ours.Congratulations to Michael & his team!We will most definitely be back (soon) and would highly recommend others, if they haven't already done so, to lunch/dine at The Wheatsheaf. My idea of Heaven . . . . The Wheatsheaf, operating as a high end gastro-pub, which genuinely encourages locals to use it as a village pub.

This was not our first time dining at the Wheatsheaf and again we were not disappointed. The food, ambience and service were all excellent.I can thoroughly recommend the scallops for a starter. We enjoyed fillet steak and venison as our two mains and couldn't fault these either. No room for dessert but the wine was good too.Went upstairs to bed, had a comfortable night and rose for a good breakfast the next morning. Altogether an excellent night's stay and I am sure it won't be the last.

My boyfriend bought an itison voucher for a stay, bottle of prosecco, dinner and breakfast here for my birthday this weekend. The room was beautifully decorated, modern and warm with everything you would need. The meal was amazing - for the deal we had, we thought we would have a limited choice but we got to choose from the 3 course menu or two courses from the normal menu. Both of our starters were the best we've had in a long time (the mushroom tart and the crispy goats cheese) and our mains were delicious. We shared the soufflé for dessert and finished with some drinks in the bar which was lovely and cosy. The service was excellent - every staff member was so welcoming and friendly. Really could not fault our stay here, especially considering it was such good value. Lovely surprise for my birthday :) would definitely return!

Small hotel comfortably decorated. Not the most beautiful interior but the food and service is phenomenal, staff attentive to the right degree. The dinner and breakfast was quality. My husband had the lamb that was cooked to perfection, I had scallops that melted in your mouth with flavours of capers and a beautiful jus. Desert was a bailys creme brûlée supposed to share but had to eat it all it was so tasty. Cosy bar with an open fire after dinner. Breakfast again executed to perfection, my only moan is ive eaten to much. Would recommend this hidden gem.

Brillant local Inn.Dining with a disable person, there is two steps leading into the Wheatsheaf, but the member of staff grabbed a ramp and assist us into the restaurant. Made us comfortable at a table of our choice.Dropped in for Sunday lunch. Two courses for £16.95.Scottish Sirloin of Beef was amazing and was definitely worth the extra cost. I had the salmon which was cooked to perfection.Gluten free bread is available, very good Gluten free choices. We will be going back, the staff was great and very attentive and friendly. She also helped us back out.

We went for our evening meal. The service was excellent, as was the food. It was a little pricey, but it wasn't your average meal, so I guess you get what you pay for. The restaurant came recommended to us and I would endorse that recommendation to others.

I ate there with my family the night before a wedding (we also stayed there, accommodation was nice too). Unlike the rest of my family, I am a vegan and had called in advance to ask whether they could cater for vegan options. They were kind enough to ask which foods I didn't like. On the night we ate there, they had prepared a full vegan menu with three courses, two options for each! This was astoundingly good service as often there is no option at all. The choices were lovely, so much so that my husband had the vegan starter I did not choose, and my Mum had the vegan main course I did not choose. The food was really delicious too, and apparently the meat options went down very well. They also catered kindly for my two year old nephew, making sure his food was cool enough before it was brought to the table (otherwise he won't eat it at all....). They put us in a separate smaller room away from the other diners which was great because we didn't have to worry about 2yo high jinx which we find hilarious annoying other people. Altogether a great service, and lovely, lovely food.

The Wheatsheaf at Swinton is always a safe bet, the evening meals are lovely and erring towards fine dining but without any pretence and using the best of seasonal produce sourced locally. The bedrooms are clean and modern, a great place to stay.

We were looking for a beer on the rural road from Berwick to Kelso. Hardly any stopping places on the whole route, but this looked attractive. We were warmly welcomed and seated in the lounge. As we were a bit hungry to we asked about snacks, and were offered anything from the huge lunch menu which we could have without leaving our comfortable chairs. We opted for the big cheese board which went very well with our beers. Wonderful service and the bill reasonable. We shall try to stay at the hotel when we are next in the area.

We've visited here for lunch on the second day of our 500 mile charity bike ride - from Edinburgh to London for Missing People - each year for the past five years. They always go the extra mile to help. We always have a nice room reserved for us inside where riders can relax. Food is perfect for the riders and there's plenty of space outside for our bikes. We have never been disappointed. It's a great place and suits us well. Can't fault it and we'll be back next year for sure. Thanks from Ride2Raise and Missing People.

Terry and I popped into the Wheatsheaf for Sunday lunch and were definitely not disappointed. The Wheatsheaf is a typical country pub that seems to be favoured by the locals (always a good sign). We opted for the steak and ale pie, one of the traditional dishes n the menu and were pleasantly surprised when it arrived. Not your usual deconstructed pub offering, but a traditional steak pie in a stoneware dish. The portions were big, the pie tasted delicious. Real home made steak pie. Congratulations to the chef !!Service was very friendly and attentive and it was great value for money. What else could you ask for.

I had a hugely disappointing stay at Ednam house. It looks like a beautiful building on the website, as do the rooms and the food. The building itself is very pretty from the outside but it needs to be completely gutted and renovated. None of furniture should even be kept - throw everything out and start from zero. Everything was dirty and dusty, the lampshades stained, the shower mouldy, the carpets old and horrible. Black hairs in the room and the carpet clearly not hoovered. The food at the restaurant was so bad we didn’t touch it when it arrived. Do not order the cod dish as it is completely flavourless. We also ordered green beans and the waiter let us know 10 minutes after our other food arrived that “there is a problem with the green beans”. They never arrived which left us wonder what on earth this problem could have been… The staff were not great and often got our orders wrong or forgot things. This place is completely misrepresented online and it would be such a shame for people to use their well earned holidays at such a badly run establishment. They need to start from zero and close this hotel for months to make the fixes it desperately needs. The location and house from the outside are beautiful so all I can say is that it has nothing but potential. I feel truly catfished by this hotel so please think twice before booking

Make sure you go to toilet before food because you won't want to walk that far. Food was good better than other spoons in the surrounding areas.
