28/9 for Sat lunch. Two three course Pensioners Specials. There was no queuing and we were offered a choice of tables, which were very clean. The toilets were exemplary, which is always a good sign. We didn't like the idea of Carrot and Sweet Potato soup or fruit juice for starters, so were offered a free side with our main and we both opted for mushy peas. Service was quick, polite and the mains were excellent with decent sized portions of tasty haddock in a moreish batter. Chips were fine and accompanied by large portion of proper peas. We both had a vanilla ice-cream for dessert which came with a wafer and again were large portions. My partner ordered a pot of tea and I had a glass or water, neither of which were charged for despite the former being £2.50. An oversight by the waitress who was otherwise attentive, smart and helpful. Total bill: £30.90. Despite price rises, this remains proper Yorkshire value with top table service. 10/10. There is a free car parking behind the restaurant with lots of worrying signs up about private land, £100 fines and CCTV. In reality, if your using the Whaler there's nothing to worry about and no further need to give your reg to the staff. Five Stars. Recommended.

Wetherby Whaler in Pudsey is my "go to" fish and chips shop for gluten free batter, it has always been, to me, the best and the benchmark to which all other gf fish and chips are measured. My partner and I usually eat in and have nothing to complain about. This evening, Sunday, we decided to order to take away, travelling from Eccleshill, Bradford, not too far but far enough. On arrival back home I was so disappointed, the GF batter on the fish was thin and darker than usual, the fish was dry and i would question the portion size, I ordered a special, it wasn't very big.

I was eager to review one of the seven branches of The Wetherby Whaler, and on this occasion, I chose Pudsey. There is a good-sized private free car park to the rear of the building. The shop is large, with a dedicated chippy takeaway and a spacious restaurant. Everything was tidy, and the customer service was commendable. The packaging was environmentally friendly. I opted for the Whaler Haddock, which was a thick jumbo fillet encased in a dark, crispy batter. The batter had a colour I had never experienced before, but the taste was excellent, as was the haddock. However, the chips were pale, much too firm, and rather bland. The potato scallop was a bit oily (beef dripping) and, like the Yorkshire fishcake, could have benefitted from being left to drain for a minute or two before packaging. Their fish and chips is the best I've had so far in Pudsey! Crispy batter, fish cooked just right. Chips are of a good quality too. The food is not too oily like in other places and the service is quick. And to top it all off they serve in paper and cardboard boxes which are all recyclable. It has never disappointed so far!

Not as good as last time Four of us called on for tea at about 16:00 Plenty of table to choose from. The greeting, first words spoken, was “Do you have any allergies”. As greetings go not so good. “Good afternoon, do you have any allergies” slightly better, “here’s your table, do you have any allergies better still”. Having sat down with the menus, “let me know if you have any allergies” best. Two soups, carrot and parsnip, good, chicken soup was poor. Cool at best, not much flavour and no chicken in sight. Its not hard to get soup hot. Haddock and chips were OK, an annoying gap between the fish and chips arriving and the peas/beans to go with them. All of it was warm rather than hot. Friendly and cheerful staff.

Went to grab takeaway fish and chips. My husband asked for a lightly battered and lightly cooked fish to be put in. No problem. I then recalled we needed a small fish for part of our order and called to ask for this. Often, special requests have to be mentioned. I then stood back, to then await our turn. A young man who was on the front counter, turned and looked at me like something he had wiped off his shoe. He explained he was busy and needed to finish what he was doing first. I don't recall his exact words. I pointed out I wasn't queue jumping and just letting him know. I made sure the couple in front of us were aware of that too. They were absolutely fine about it and understood why I had called ahead. This place lost forty quid in sales today, through providing a terrible customer experience. Went on to another chippy and had quite the opposite experience.

We used to visit the Wetherby Whaler Pudsey dine-in restaurant every couple of months, over the past 20 years or so, and always found their fish and chips delicious, consistent in quality and good value. Sadly, our enjoyment decreased when, some time ago, they changed their batter recipe, which rather than the previous crispy and tasty golden-brown, became, in our view, rather insipid, soggy and floury (I believe they started using soy flour to make the batter gluten-free), and we started going less and less. We’ve not been for a year, and I’m afraid that our visit today may be our last. In line with their competitors, prices have risen dramatically, but what really surprised us was that not only has the portion size been reduced (plate was actually smaller to try to obscure this) but the fish was rather grey and wet, and the chips had quite a few black ‘eyes’. I’m not sure if they’ve switched from beef dripping to oil to cook with, but the fish and chips were no longer ‘tasty’. To cap it all, you now even have to pay an extra 30p for a slice of bread and butter, although I can appreciate their rationale (that 50% of the previously ‘free’ bread and butter was left uneaten by unthinking customers who had requested it and was being thrown away). Sadly, the restaurant was almost empty when we visited, whereas previously it used to be packed, with people even waiting for a table. I appreciate that business overheads have increased, but to justify the now high prices, and to keep the customers coming back, the quality needs to be top-notch. We were very disappointed today.

Service was exellent, young girl friendly and fast. Fair sized fish but didn't taste as fresh, wasn't in crispy batter, not soggy though. Chips were a bit pale, but ok. Mushy peas from a tin l think. I paid a seniors price which was £17 l think so it's three courses but if you have mushy peas with the meal then no starter, but did get a trifle for pudding. So price is reasonable l suppose. I do like this place, everyone likes fish and chips, and we will go again, it does seem to entertain the older generation though. 😄

My 88 year old mother and her friend have been going to Wetherby Whaler for many years. Never again... £13+ for fish and chips but a note on the menu announced that tea would be extra, as would be bread and butter. How much does a loaf of bread cost to a restaurant ?? Ok, they could have paid for the OAP's special but they said that the fish is much smaller. Another pair of customers will now vote with their feet. A shame but as they told me, "They have price themselves out of the market as far as we are concerned". Take notice, WW, or you may find that others may feel that you don't offer the value for money that you once built your reputation on.

I feel mean with the poor review because I am the only person out of five of us who feels this way. Everyone else was happy, but as it is me writing the review I will reflect on my personal experience. Before doing that, I will say my partner who'd never been here before wants to go back, wishes she'd ordered the larger fish as she enjoyed hers so much. Others with us (family members) all loved their meal too. Great. Shoutout to Zack, the young man who served us who was lovely. They have a vegan option on their menu which is great, and I was pleased to see that they did. This is a fish and chip establishment-I do not expect vegans are their target market or indeed, often choose to go there. But I don't like to be not included in family meals of course and I won't be the only one, so as a vegan I do go to such establishments sometimes. Their vegan option is STUPIDLY overpriced. It is more expensive than the standard fish and chips meal at £15.95. £15.95 is not a lot of course-I have no qualms paying that for meals and I do often. £15.95 for a bowl of tasteless tomato sauce with some soggy aubergine floating about in it however is a different thing altogether. It tasted of absolutely nothing and if they did use vegan mozzarella (as the menu stipulates) it was either as tasteless as the tomato sauce, or they used so little of it that any flavour got buried. The best part of £20 is definitely not what they should be charging for this meal, and is quite frankly an insult. Get a microwave ready meal from Aldi to give to vegans (can freeze obviously) and you'd be at least giving them something that tastes nice. Have a look at other establishments and what they offer if you need inspiration. Vegan fish fingers can be shoved in your freezer too-serve them with the new potatoes you have (which were quite nice)! OR, put the price down to reflect what you're providing. I was raiding the cupboards a couple of hours later when we got home as I was so hungry.

Our bill was around £53 The food was piping hot , the batter was crispy and the fish perfectly cooked. We all managed just about to clear our plates, we all enjoyed the food very much. I was also able to order a takeaway meal that was brought to our table. Such a great place to eat for all ages. The toilets were a little dated but were clean and well stocked. There is a wheel chair accessible entrance, and disabled toilets. The location is superb being so close to the train station . Our Hotel was a mere 100 metres away so we were really excited going after our anniversary meal for cocktails. We had been recommended to visit here by several friends so we were prepared for a fun end to the evening . Great welcoming bar atmosphere and cheerful , helpful staff helping us select something to suit our taste from the extensive menu . Sad!y the preparation of all cocktails ends with completely filling the glass with ice then pouring in the concoction to rest towards the bottom of the glass . It didn't take long for our drinks to start being weakened by the melting ice and left me grimacing at the taste at the end . Sadly this was our only drink as we left to try somewhere else .

Went to S&C for the first time with my parents and my partner for a half-way Sunday Lunch between Leeds and Harrogate. The staff were really helpful and friendly, the atmosphere was lovely and the food was terrific. If I'm nitpicking, the only thing I would offer in terms of constructive feedback was that we specifically chose S&C because of the vegan options online, but the Sunday menu didn't offer the same variety and a vegan dessert option would have been great - but I'd be lying if I said it was a big deal. Early evening meet up with family. Great place, good vibe, Oktoberfest menu was good and great choice of beers.

Staff are friendly and cheap on their drinks. Made to feel welcome and staff are really lovely
