The absolute worst lunch I have had in many, many years. I was charged £6.50 for a tuna and cheese (allegedly) panini that looked like it had been given the last rights four days before, and £3.00 for a *small* dish of incinerated chips. The cutlery wasn't sparkling (to a point where I preferred to eat with my fingers) and the tables were sadly lacking a good wipe down with disinfectant. And don't get me started on the two pint pots on the window ledge with what appeared to be cider vinegar in it covered partially with cling film to trap flies presumably as there was one lost soul already in it's tardy grave. Had I not been with friends and didn't want them to feel uncomfortable, I would have asked for my money back. Would I recommend going to this bar? ... I leave you to answer your own question.

This pub is an absolute joke. For some reason, it used to be a Thursday the kitchen was closed but basically in my experience, the kitchen is never open and today we were met with people coming back out saying the kitchen was again shut. This is Good Friday and Ayr was busier so what is the problem? Why advertise food if you never sell it?

Great, REAL bar with REAL people enjoying themselves with REAL ales. What’s not to like? Reading a few of the negative reviews of the place who criticise either the food and or the staff and thinking; firstly, is a bar that serves food, it’s not a restaurant, and secondly, us punters are the landlady’s guests, so have some respect.

Went here for a works Christmas dinner and am still in shock about the poor standards and the way I was spoken to. Our group were told to make selections at least 3 weeks in advance exactly what we wanted. For mains there was a choice of turkey, beef or a vegetarian option. Being vegetarian, I selected the veggie option. I was told that I was the awkward one and then given roast potatoes, carrots, sprouts and a microwaved cheese and tomato pasta ready meal!! Fair enough if there was no veggie option and it was last minute but they offered a veggie choice and we're given at least 3 weeks to prepare. The 'chef' then came out and said 'I'm sorry yours is sh*te but that's your choice, I eat the food that eats your food and what else do you want me to do?' When asked about desert I was asked if I could have anything as there may be animal fats? Desert was pre-bought in so there should have been an ingredients list. This shows a complete lack of awareness of dietary requirements and is DANGEROUS, if someone has an allergy and eats here they could die as the staff clearly have no clue about food standards, my partner is a professional chef and was completely disgusted and horrified when I told her about this. Kitchen looked messy and pretty unclean, eat here at your own risk and please do not if you have any allergies or dietary requirements. Bar staff seemed nice enough, there were a few functions in so hard to judge the atmosphere as it probably wasn't a regular night but it did seem ok. Would go back for a beer but there's no way in the world I would ever consider eating here again.

Whenever we are in the area (which is about twice a year), we always try and call in here for a couple of beers. My mate lived around the corner from here in the 80s...it was under different ownership then...and I loved the place, the ambience was great. Since the new owners have taken over it has just got better and better. Fantastic range of ales, plenty of gins to chose from and if you fancy a sandwich or typical pub grub, then that's also available. They are dog friendly, human friendly and fantastic hosts. I have read the few bad reviews and think there are one or two "chip on shoulder" reviews. Unfortunately, a basement pub is not going to offer easy access, so if you have mobility problems it may not be the easiest bar in Ayr to manoeuvre about in, which is a shame, but there is no easy solution to that problem unfortunately.

Stumbled on this pub today in Ayr. Situated just up from the playpark at the beach on Wellington square. Visited with a child and a dog and both (along with the adults) were made very welcome. The waitress immediately brought our dog a bowl of fresh water. The food menu was limited but perfect for us. They had Steak Pie, Fish and Chips, Chicken Curry, Macaroni Cheese and maybe a few other main courses and then some lunch type snacks like baguettes etc. I cannot believe the excellent value for money in such a lovely wee pub, I kid you not, the main courses were just £4.00 each. We both had steak pie, peas and chips and it was perfect. We then had desserts and coffee and these were also great value - desserts were £2.50 each. Although the pub was busy, the food was served quickly and was piping hot. The staff that served us were all lovely and friendly. I would definitely visit again when in Ayr. Very very disappointed. This is a warning to anyone disabled/ elderly. There is no disabled access or disabled toilets!!! I was with an elderly man with learning difficulties and he can hardly walk. After struggling down the stairs, he then struggles to get through the door with his Zimmer frame as half the door was locked. The bar maid then informed me I could open the other one but did not come and help me and I was very quiet! I didn't realise there were two locks on the door and was struggling so much a fellow customer helped me and she didn't even apologise! Watching the man I was with get to the toilet almost had me in tears, two small flights of stairs. I shall taking it further.Food very cheap and okay.Staff unfriendly and unhelpful. Drinks were slammed down on the table and were spilled, no apology.

Smallish, very quaint and cosy. Brilliant little watering hole after a long day. We drove past it twice before parking up and searching on foot. The whole place is in the buildings basement. The huge 'black' boot outside is a bit of a giveaway in daylight but not easily spotted at night with rain on the car windows. Staff are great. Beers are good and they have an extended variety of malt whiskeys at very good prices. They also have, I believe, live traditional music on Sundays. Better check the day.

I've had so many word of mouth recommendations to visit Wellingtons bar, and for good reason. It's a basement pub on Wellington Square gardens just yards from the beach but if you blink you'll miss it! Keep your eyes peeled for the big welly boot, descend the stairs, and inside you might be pleasantly surprised to find a very friendly traditional pub. They serve decent real ales, wines by the miniature bottle, and even have a cocktail and malt whisky menu. There are big TV screens and a busy schedule of live music sessions too. I ate from the £4 lunch menu which included the likes of mac n cheese with chips, chicken curry, chili and rice and more. Sandwiches were just £2.50 and you could add soup or chips for £1.50. Great prices for good honest pub food. They have a couple of tables and umbrellas outside on the wee patio for when the weather behaves. What's not to love!

Went in with 10 of my friends. We were the only people in the whole pub. it was 11pm. One of us swore and we were literally given into trouble as its a family friendly restaurant. The woman came over to our table and gave us a 10 minute lecture on manners and how to conduct yourself in public. 11pm and we were the only ones there. So we left and have not returned. Shame as it was a nice wee pub but you don't want hassle like that.

great little pub down off street level but well worth a visit. Folk night was great with traditional music that was really an open floor with people joining in and "jamming" as they pleased.. first class

We were looking for somewhere for lunch and came across this bar by accident. It is not at street level so you could quite easily miss it. We all chose the steak pie and were not disappointed. It was home made, delicious and the best value steak pie I have ever had at £4. With soft drinks the bill came to under £16 for three people. Great value and good friendly service. I will definitely return.

Good value tasty food - cooked on the premises.A great atmosphere with friendly staff goes a long, long way to creating this.Don't miss out on a visit here - if the food isn't enough to tempt you, there's always the real ales ......

When visiting Ayr i always go to the Wellington for a Loch Fyne ale or two after a curry. The drinks are reasonably priced unlike some of the local Indian restaurants. The staff are pleasant , the service is good and the bar is well stocked.I have only had lunch here once and it was OK.The Wellington has both local and passing trade which adds to a good atmosphere.

My wife and I popped in for lunch. Nice young lady greeted us and was very helpful. Place was virtually empty at around 14:30 but by the time we left a few more had arrived. My wife had a soup ( needed a warm up) and toasted sandwich. She enjoyed that with a nice pot of tea. For myself had a chicken balmoral. Very peppery sauce it was enjoyable. Lager tops to wash down. Reasonably priced.

Two Real Ales are kept on at all times and very good value food is served all day. It has a locals feel but outsiders are made very welcome. On a Saturday evening they have a DJ playing old hits and on a Sunday evening the local folkies gather round to play tunes and sing.A lovely pub.

Popped in for a pre-dinner pint on recommendation of the proprietor of B&B in which we were staying (it is her local). Chatty and charming barmaid explained the local ales and let us try before purchasing ..slipped down a treat!. They do music, also folk nights on Sundays that I imagine would be a real hoot. A real cosy pub atmosphere (basement) and natives friendly. Could get to like coming here if I was local!

Stewed steak with pastry square - this not steak pie and why restaurants insist in calling it so is beyond me....very average and nothing to write home about

Fantastic little pub - welcoming, friendly, weekend entertainment, a large selection of Whiskies - with a helpful 'map' explaining each! Cocktails are a must especially the Welly on the beach! A definite must for those looking to keep warm and settle in with a wee dram!! I even had a FANTASTIC cocktail as a birthday treat - thank you :)

Went on a small adventure to Coylton Arms Inn. I have to say we will be back, the food is very good, a well seasoned lasagna with plenty of herbs, nice béchamel sauce and a good salad and french fries. The only small criticism was the lack of staff which made the wait slightly longer than necessary. The staff themselves were extremely welcoming and the ambiance was charming without being twee. Portion size was good without being excessive. All in all an enjoyable experience that I would recommend for a pub lunch.

This was a masterclass from the second we walked through the door. Young guy at the counter was just the right level of friendly and was so welcoming. I'm picky with food and coffee but this was outstandingly perfect.
