I visited for a working lunch meeting on Wednesday 2nd December, once you have found the only lift which will take you to the restaurant, the setting is excellent, it is a winter woodland at the minute, I liked the casual set up, I bet is it is great experience in the summer when the roof is removed !, it was very busy but the food arrived within 20 minutes, the prices are good for London, fish & chips, burgers etc. only about £15.00 & very good size portion. WELL DONE, I will return

You in the 1920s and 30s Selfridge's had a rooftop restaurant, which was closed during the Second World War are never reopened. Vintage Salt is a breath of fresh air in both senses of the word. Perched on the top of Selfridge's it commands a rooftop view of London from the West End. Although if the building was slightly higher you would see more, it is nevertheless well worth the experience.Depending on the weather, the roof top slides back, but his sheltered from the elements when necessary. It is casual dining which one would normally experience overseas. The restaurant is fish based, although meat is available too. For a venue in the West End instantly represents good value for money. The cheapest main dish, good old fashion fish and chips, is £15. When one considers that this would cost about £8 in a takeaway, £15 is not expensive. 2 of us had the fish and chips and another had the fish of the day which was a large massive sole cooked in butter for £24; again good value for money. Wine is not expensive for the location, although one can choose to spend a lot more if you wish! The deserts were divine. I would thoroughly recommend the chocolate burger, an interesting desert made of chaux pastry, chocolate, cream and a thin layer of jelly. 2 two course lunch with wine and coffee was around £30 each.We will definitely return.

Truffled chips was hella amazing! honestly it was my first time having truffle and tastebuds simply exploded inside my mouth. as if that weren't good enough, along came the cornish shrimp burger, head literally exploded from trying to contain all the flavours. And for dessert doe, ordered the chocolate burger, had the chocolate burger and I actually transformed into a real live chocolate burger!interior decor was in line with the atmosphere except for the fact there were people bustling about due to a rowdy crowd as it was a Saturday night to be fair. However, there was only 1 dedicated elevator to reach the restaurant. not too convenient in my opinion and maybe a potential safety hazard.

We had gone in to visit Selfridges during the afternoon and found ourselves to be hungry. As we were getting ready to use the lift, there was a young lady who inquired if we planned to go up to Vintage Salt. We asked her what it was and she told us it was a restaurant on the fifth floor. We decided to try it.The setting is fun because on a nice day they pull the roof back so that you are sitting outside on top of the building. We had a fun waiter who made some menu recommendations. There are plants along the outside which help to bring in some greenery. We had a pleasant lunch.

A friend ordered "vegetarian" Tea for us both, which consisted of a three-tier cake standThe bottom layer of the Stand had various small pastries, the middle layer had various sandwiches and the top layer had scones - a separate plate had pots of strawberry jam and fresh cream to put on the scones. We each chose a different kind of tea brought in separate teapots and we both had a glass of sparkling wine and a jug of water. This is a set "afternoon tea" which my friend ordered in advance and was very expensive but nice if you can afford it and can treat a friend as my friend did - an experience!!!

We popped in as I was keen to see the new restaurant on the roof of Selfridges. We stopped for brunch before a matinee show of Les Mis. We were not disappointed. Poached Eggs were good, fresh juice was lovely, tea was spot on and the chocolate burger (we shared) as we just wanted to try it! WOW! Amazing work of art, all edible chocolate and sweet biscuit but looked just like a burger and chips! You have to see the picture. The 'burger' was dark chocolate, the 'bun' was a light biscuit, the 'mayo' was white chocolate sauce, the 'tomato' sauce was actually a thin jam and the 'chips' were cinnamon doughnuts. What a great creation for a dessert/chocolate/sweet lover!

I booked this for mid August expecting a beautiful summers day but sadly it was one of the wettest so far this year. They had covered the terrace and pulled down the plastic sides but the wind howled through. That didn't stop us enjoying a lovely lunch though and the service was super. Menu choices were good and portion sizes large. We had sardines and chicken salad to start followed by sea trout and the shrimp burger. All very filling. The sea trout was ok but needed seasoning and some lemon juice but it was good all the same. We paid £94 inc service for 2 courses, 2 drinks and coffee and tea so a little pricey but came away full and stayed longer than expected considering the miserable weather. Puds looked amazing but we simply didn't have room! Worth a trip.

We hadn't booked a table and were grudgingly told we could wait in the bar and there should be a table in 45 minutes, this was not a problem it was a beautiful day and we were happy to sit outside and enjoy a drink while we waited and then waited and waited. Finally my friend went into the restaurant and asked there, we were immediately seated as there were quite a few empty tables at the other end of the restaurant! The service from then on was reasonably good my problem was that all I wanted was water to drink as it was hot and we had been sitting in the sun for a long while and this is served by the glass, hence I spent most of my meal time waiting for my glass to be refilled, surely a jug on the table serves the customer better and is less work for the team. The food was lovely though great fish and chips.

Visited here for a business lunch on a nice warm day which was ideal for this venue being on a terrace in Selfridges. Once we managed to navigate around the store to find the lift that takes you to the restaurant we were very promptly shown our seats. The place was very busy and i thought they had perhaps too many tables which made the space feel tight, but nevertheless the place looked great. Set up like a cornish restaurant on the sea, they have done a great job in setting this up in a department store. We ordered a round of drinks which were fairly quick to arrive along with a few nibbles which they forgot about as they arrived only when we ordered food, for which we went straight for mains.I decided on the Lamb and Mint and Pea cutlets which was absolutely beautiful, really loved it. It was cooked to perfection and flavored really well. What lets the place down slightly is the service is not great, as they don't come around often enough for drinks which meant we only had 2 drinks in the 2.5 hours we were there. The food is great and i would definitely visit again but maybe during the week when it is quieter.

We both enjoyed cocktails (strong!), main courses and desserts. I had the Harissa salmon which was delicious and my husband had the burger which was also good. We both had the banana and brownie sundae for dessert. The restaurant has a very relaxed feel and the service was very good. Our only complaint is that it was very hot and we were sat in full sun. Another couple asked if the shades could be drawn but were told no, so until the cloud came across we were very hot. We had also expected better views across the west end, however the setting was still great.

My friend and I went to Vintage Salt on a somewhat overcast Tuesday lunchtime. I booked literally two hours before our reservation and didn't have a problem getting a table. The restaurant is on the roof of Selfridges with great views over the west end, towards the City and beyond. The decor is what I would describe as 'driftwood chic', its obvious that they are going for a nautical feel and it works really well with the open air element of this establishment. When we arrived the roof was partially pulled across and the clear plastic walls were up but halfway into our lunch the roof was rolled back and the walls came down allowing for a much needed breeze to waft across. When you arrive on the ground floor of Selfridges, unless you know where you're going, you might need a bit of direction to the express lift which takes you directly to the 5th floor. The lift is in the fragrance section of the ground floor towards the front revolving doors in the middle of the building. There you are greeted by a hostess who will take you straight up to the reception where you can check-in for your reservation. At 12:30pm the restaurant was practically empty but by 2:30pm when we left, there was a real buzz with pretty much every table taken. The menu is quite varied with half of the mains section taken up by various fish dishes. My friend opted for the harissa sea trout which came on a bed of tabbouleh with a minty yogurt dressing. I went for the chicken paillard which came with pickled morelle mushrooms and creamed corn and then we shared a side of truffle chips. We also shared a bottle of the French sauvignon blanc which was a fantastic accompaniment to our meals. Having a sweet tooth the desserts sounded too good to pass up and i'm so glad that we had a bit of room to force one down - my recommendation would be to go for the caramel popcorn and peanut cheesecake. Amazing. The service was attentive but without being overbearing and at the end of our meal, we could quite happily have languished at our table for the rest of the afternoon; alas we had to go back to work! I will definitely be back.

I saw the staff do this more than once. The afternoon tea was ok, although we had to ask 3 times to have the actual tea brought to us to go with our scones etc. ŵe waited over 45 mins for the tea. What made the afternoon great was the rooftop spot in the sunshine and the atmosphere was just right for a girlie Saturday catching up.Unfortunately we were constantly ignored, most of the staff refuse to make eye contact and If you do catch one they tell you you will have to ask the waiter for your table. When we eventually asked for the service to be taken off the bill, we were told a manager would have to do it, who didn't then even bother to find out what the issue was or even apologise.

We dropped in for a late, small lunch after shopping at Selfridges. First, staff were unaware that the only access is via he lift from the ground floor. We were directed to a 1st floor lift and waited, and waited, until we figured it out. On arrival we were greeted well and told that their only table was "out the back" - unsure what that meant, we took a look. It was OK. Under cover - good on a blustery day - but out the way a bit. Anyway, a half pint of prawns and 2 ciders was perfectly nice. Fresh prawns, good dipping sauce on the side. I think some French bread for the table would have been nice. Strangely, there were empty tables all the time we were there - so ours was not the last! Staff were friendly. They should have given us a small bucket for the prawn shells. A plate is not helpful. The express elevator to the restaurant is hidden in the cosmetics department of Selfridges and it takes you straight up to Vintage Salt. We got in on the off chance we would be able to get a table without a booking. The moment you step off the elevator you walk into Beach Club-like surroundings and after a little wonder you arrive at the reception desk where a hostess welcomes you. A stern face (I wonder if she's thinking; "shall I give them a table?"), some stressful stares at her iPad and she offered us table 22 for an hour and a half. Brilliant! Once you walk into the open roof restaurant the feel is sophisticated, relaxing, beach, sun, and fun. We're quickly helped by friendly staff and the menu, although small, has some wonderful delights on it. We ordered the steak, char grilled burger and the fish and chips. Everything was superbly prepared and tasted very good. The restaurant was busy and I think we were lucky to get a table so booking would be advisable. The views over surrounding London are a little bit obscured by the outer walls of Selfridges nevertheless, the feeling you get being on top of one of the busiest parts of London is quite unique.

We first visited one evening during the week for a drink having read about this place on the web (not tripadvisor), really enjoyed the ambiance, it was a nice warm evening, sitting outside in deckchairs with a seaside theme, looking over the rooftops of London, it was quite special, so on the way out we made a reservation for Saturday lunch time. On arrival on Saturday we were first given a table by the kitchen, avoid - this area is manic, but we were re seated within a few minutes, and that was much better. we both ordered the shrimp burger - and that was very very good, to be recommended, followed by the Popcorn and peanut cheese cake, this was really good, again to be recommended. Whilst the English sparkling wine is really excellent. Would definitely recommend this place - before it shuts for the winter, its not cheap, but for that view and location in central town you would not except it to be! We had a late lunch, and initially it was manically busy, they were not even allowing walk ins to go to the bar as it was full (it was again a lovely day) but by 4pm it had freed up a little, so I guess that would be a good time to walk in and try and get a table.

We booked a table for 4 here for our hen weekend away. Staff very friendly and quickly rushed to book my prawns with the chef as their was only one left. We all thoroughly enjoyed the food which didn't take too long to arrive. If I had anything to complain about it was that we had about 3 waiters/waitresses so we wasn't sure who to ask when we needed anything. Also, our table was right next to one of the tills and as it is very cramped with tables tight to each other I was constantly being knocked by waiters or customers. But apart from that I thought it was lovely.

The food was great, cod, sea bass and scallop, delicious! Really nice place for a dinner outside. We booked at 9pm because they didn't have a ability earlier, but the waiter was chasing us to eat quick because the kitchen closed. Immediately after bring the main, they asked for our desserts, obviously we didn't have dessert. Despite the waiter was so friendly and polite, it is not appropriate for a place like this. I would recommend, but booking early :-)

Enjoyed a wonderful business lunch at Vintage Salt today located in the lift of Selfridges. There is an express elevator from the ground floor and you enter a most unusual ambience which is left as a surprised there is a great buzz but you can focus on your own group's conversation easily. The menu is fairly typical looking but the presentations are all unusual.Food was delicious and service very attentive. Recommended!

Leading to the rooftop is Vintage Salt's dedicated elevator. It's best if you have a reservation because the place is packed. It's a very popular spot for couples and small groups (10 or less). Food was good. Our favorite dish is the harissa roasted trout—perhaps one of the best dishes we've had during our stay in London. It can get chilly in the evening, so bring a shawl/scarf or light jacket if you're going for dinner.

We managed to get a table for 3 on a hot summers day at relatively short notice (20 mins) this in itself was a great start. This was my second visit to Vintage Salt and it was just as good at the first. Great food at good prices with excellent service (you must also try the cocktails). A perfect place for a business lunch, or girls lunch post a day shopping. It even better on a sunny day. The photos say it all.

We were all looking forward to sitting on the Rooftop Terrace of Selfridges for the pop-up Vintage Salt Restaurant. The weather alas did not play ball. It was wet and overcast. Saying that the terrace was lovely and it didn't dampen the experience. The food was great - Tuna Carpaccio with Avocado (enough for two people), followed by the Shrimp Burger which was delicious. We shared a desert as so full we just couldn't manage one each. Salted Caramel Peanut Cheesecake. Sickly yet so moreish we fought with our forks for every last bit. Recommended for sure, just check the weather report.

Visited for lunch yesterday at 12pm, sat straight down and ordered fairly quickly. Service was really good and our northern waitress from Middlesbrough couldn't do enough for us. The choice of food and drink is great with a very good selection of cocktails. We had the g Julep and the citrus floater - both lovely and perfect for the sunny day. The shrimp burger I had - wow. Never heard or seen this before and it was delicious. The chips were cooked to perfection and my partner had the fish and chips which were also cooked very well. I was disappointed that the brownie desert I had read about wasn't on the menu but our lovely waitress said they could still make it for us - it was so good! Infact one of the best deserts I have ever had. The bellini pop was the cherry on top of the cake. What a great idea!!!The location is just perfect and we had the best lunch in the sun, it really did start of our day perfectly. Really surprised about some of the reviews, but we would recommend and will hopefully be back down south to visit again.

Nice roof top restaurant in Selfridges. We had a 9pm table and the weather was not that great. The view was ok but there was a nice bar with a couple of chalets to sit inside with friends and a few deckchairs. A few dishes on the menu were already sold out. We opted for the fish and chips. The fish was very good but the chips were average (at £15 for F&C it should be perfect). Overall it was a nice evening with friendly staff but too pricey to return.

Vintage Salt is one of London's gems - I loved it. The restaurant has a magical combination of the London skyline and a beach restaurant, which just works so well. My friends and I started with a couple of yummy cocktails, taking in the view and enjoying a balmy London evening. The barman hand picked each of our drinks based on what each of us liked! We then sat down for our meal. Each of us had a starter, main and dessert accompanied by the house white. Our waiter was absolutely charming and the food was delicious. It's a must visit.

Excellent food, superb service and a great location. Starters are large, so, if you want dessert (a "must try" is the amazing chocolate burger) you may want to skip the first course. The weather was kind (there is, however, a sliding roof if it isn't. This is England, after all) and the bill didn't hurt too much. What more could we ask for?

Vintage Salt epitomises the worst of British catering, the enforcement of petty rules designed for the benefit of those operating restaurants as opposed to their customers. I tried to book a table for afternoon tea to celebrate my Mother's birthday. The website won't take online bookings which is a nuisance and directs you to make the reservation by telephone. Only when you ring are you told (when the 'phone is eventually answered) that bookings have to be made 24 hours in advance. It would not be difficult to put that fact on the website but what really annoyed me was the point blank refusal to bend a foolish rule for the sake of admitting a table of two, something one would have thought an organisation as large as Selfridges ought to have been able to have accommodated. In short this restaurant brings a great London Store into disrepute

I ate there lunchtime, yesterday, with my daughter. On arrival at exactly the time for which our table was booked, we were told to wait in the bar. This is a rooftop restaurant and as the weather was glorious, the outside area was crowded. We were told to move away from the bar area at one end (no standing allowed) so walked to the other end where there was a bar, then told to sit down (no available seats). We went back to the inside reception and along with another couple of customers who'd had the same experience, waited there instead. A table was ready within 5 mins. We asked for some tap water and glasses of wine. It would be nice to have had a jug of water on the table rather than just a glass poured out, especially as the day was so hot. It was topped up when requested. We ordered trout, potatoes, chips and wilted greens. My trout was virtually raw inside. It was wobbly and only just warm. I told the waitress that I couldn't eat it like that. She spoke to the chef who said it was always served up 'medium rare'. Not in my experience and I would have classed the fish as 'rare.' I have eaten trout numerous times in restaurants and never have I had to ask for it to be changed. However, once I had said this, they did agree to cook me another which took about 10 minutes. The potatoes were not hot enough but the greens, tasty, and spiced with chilli peppers. The restaurant is a nice idea in principle but from where we were sitting the only view was the top of a crane. It was lovely to sit outside on such a beautiful day but the experience was still only average. The cost of a glass of house wine, rose, two trout meals, potatoes, chips and greens was £73 which included service.

We went for an early dinner, so it wasn't overly crowded, but it was clear they were set for a very busy evening. Still, our waiter had such a lovely and inviting presence towards us that we didn't feel rushed or pushed in any way. With service like that, I'd go back even if the food was awful, which it wasn't! The food was delicious, fresh, beautifully served and very tasty indeed. The cocktails were so refreshing, I had the Citrus Cooler. But watch out! It doesn't taste like there much alcohol but there sure is a punch to it. Perhaps that's a sign of an expert mixologist!I love Selfridges. They keep the bar high in terms of trend, quality, and service. As such, they're also watched carefully by those who not only like to stay on top of the fashion but also by those who might be quick to criticise. There's no fault to find here.

Enjoyable roof terrace as and when summer weather allows. I know it is a bit gimmicky but we enjoyed ourselves. Nice cocktails, a bit pricey at around £10 each though well made, strong yet not overwhelming. The bar area is small but the beach huts are a fun touch. We found sitting at the larger, more communal table meant people were more amiable as well. It is just about far enough away from the restaurant area which did not look as nice to us. Don’t be put off going to the bar by this, particularly after the restaurant review in this week’s Evening Standard magazine! Worth the trip! Service was good and we did not have to wait for drinks. We were there mid-week and mid-afternoon so the bar area was busy enough but obviously quieter than say weekends or evenings. Access is via the dedicated lift on the Ground Floor only.

Vintage Salt is on the roof of Selfridges, I love roof-tops in London so it's great to have another place to enjoy the views and sunshine (on the day we went anyway). Even better, the whole experience is fantastic. We had wonderfully friendly, efficient service, we were thirsty after several hours of shopping and our waiter kept us topped up with cold tap water after we mentioned it. And the food was great. Fish and chips with fish so perfectly cooked in the crispiest and lightest of batter and a delicious shrimp burger with proper chunks of prawn in it. It's totally chilled and food comes up quickly and piping hot. Not the cheapest place for a mid-shopping lunch, but definitely one of the best places to escape to in Oxford Street.

After the very mixed reviews on TripAdvisor, we weren't sure what to expect from Vintage Salt, however, we went with an open mind and had a lovely time. The waiting staff were attentive, friendly and humorous. The cocktail selection was unusual and were presented beautifully - delicious. I recommend the bread - warm, crusty and tasty. For main course, I had the fish and chips and can honestly say the batter was one of the nicest I had tasted (and yes, I have tasted a lot of varying degrees of expensive!) - crunchy and light with fluffy well-cooked fish. I might have expected the chips to be a bit more exciting with triple-cooked being de rigeur at the moment but the portions were large and the accompaniments (minty mushy peas and a lovely tartare sauce) were well-sized too.Sadly, the day was a bit overcast so the roof was closed but I'm not going to hold Vintage Salt to account for that! I liked the beach huts seating area idea - it is kitsch and fun.I'm not sure what some people are expecting when they choose a pop-up restaurant in the heart of London's tourist shopping area on the roof of an exclusive department store! If you're looking for somewhere cheap, WHY would you think the rooftop terrace of Selfridges is a good choice? If you are offended by the possibility of 'working class' clientele (such as myself), stick to your private members' club. If you want a beautiful view of London, use the London Eye rather than peering over Oxford Street. As with all TripAdvisor reviews, take them with a bit of (reasonable) salt - vintage or otherwise...

We visited Vintage Salt on Saturday evening, we hadnt booked so were surprised to be able to get a table. I was very excired as I had heard really good things about the restaurant. However, on being seated we were given menus, the waither came over and we asked if we could have cocktails first, before our food, we did however order everything at the same time. Our starters arrived before our cocktails! The waiter then asked if we wanted drinks, then answered his own question 'oh yes you ordered them with me', they arrived a few minutes later, I must say they were very nice! Our mains arrived, one without the fries and the other without a salad, which were both side orders. Eventually the waiter noticed us waiting , the fries came out but still no salad, that arrived when mains were almost eaten. Our plates were cleared away once we finished, drinks had been finished a while - no asking if we would like more! No offer of a desert menu or would we like coffee? People on tables around us were all receiving more drinks and deserts, which looked awesome, just wish we could of got to try them!! We waited 25 minutes then asked for the bill. When it arrived we complained, and did get the bill reduced however we were still not even offered a coffee!! And that was not really the point, we wanted the full experience. The manager did give us his contact details scribbled on a bit of paper, but as we were in London on a weekend get away we are not likely to be able to visit again anytime soon. I must say we were very dissappointed , the restaurant itself is really nice and had it not been raining the view would of been great. I think Mr Selfridge would not of been impressed!

We had booked Vintage Salt, the roof garden on Selfridges for afternoon tea. This was £20/ head, which is usual London prices. However, this was the worst afternoon tea we have ever had!As we were not that hungry, we asked to have two afternoon teas between three of us and an extra scone. No problem they assured us. The sandwiches were the most inelegant I have ever seen - thick slices of ham and smoked cheese between white processed bread, thick smoked salmon on thick sliced processed seeded bread and a cucumber sandwich - six fingers in all.The cake selection was so sparse it looked ridiculous on the plate! Chocolate brownie, a cm thick and about 3cm square, 2 macaroons, 2 tiny cupcakes and 2 mini lemon meringues - meagre offerings! We did get 4 scones for some reason! Altogether, the service was slow, the food was ridiculously overpriced for what it was and a total let down. If you want a great afternoon tea in London, head to Ham Yard!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

A few seasons ago, Selfridges had the bright idea of opening up their prime real estate rooftop and introducing themed bars and restaurants for shoppers, tourists and locals alike. Last winter it was Le Chalet with Alpine wooden panelling, blankets and more hot chocolate than bloggers could shake a stick at. This summer, it's Vintage Salt and inspired by Cornish fishing villages all decked out in blues and Breton striped servers. After a brilliantly boozy brunch one Saturday at Pachamama and some attempts at shopping, Soph and I ventured up for a drink. An unsuccessful and frustrating 30 minutes later, we left empty-handed as four attempts to order drinks had been ignored. Ouch. We managed to catch Simon, the manager, on our way out and he later invited us back for a bottle of sparkling wine. With that in mind, we returned last Thursday on a warmish, sunny evening just perfect for catch ups. Soph had just celebrated her one year anniversary with her boyfriend so the English sparkling wine was a nice little treat (whilst I, on the other hand, recently celebrated a six month anniversary with mine and now it is no more, so slightly less of a celebration there). The weekly printed menu tells you the weather forecast and the food is heavily fishy, which is right up my winding little Cornish alley. We decided to kick off with the London particulars fritters, made from pea and ham hock and served with a light mustard mayonnaise. The batter was light, the seasoning was good and the mayo had the right amount of kick to complement. Mains next and Sophie went for the Josper grilled spring chicken. A huge portion (it has to be at £18.50), it's smothered with a tangy barbecue marinade and finished on the grill du jour to combine that charcoal taste with the surety of an actually cooked piece of chicken. It came served with a spicy slaw which lifted the entire dish completely and was eagerly mopped up by both of us. I chose the sea bass a la plancha which came with surf clams and wilted beach greens - in my case, samphire. It was well pan-fried with a lovely colour but a little underseasoned and a little dry on the whole. Swiping some of the slaw from the chicken was a brilliant idea and those truffle chips? To absolutely die for and hugely worth ordering. We finished on the brownie sundae dip (although were very tempted by the chocolate burger) and a deliberately upturned ice cream cone spilling with marshmallow, brownie pieces and chocolate crumb arrived at the table. Scooped up with plenty of chocolate ice cream and the obligatory cone, this was a finale that wasn't overkill. It was also, perhaps, the most authentic Cornish village dish of the day. All in all Vintage Salt was great, but a little underwhelming ultimately. The staff are friendly and attentive when you need them but the food didn't blow me away. It's busy and popular and the ideal place for people-watching but if you're after the fishy wow factor, I'd suggest trying one of these fine fisheries.
