The Sun Tavern in City of London, Westminster

We happened upon this pub and really enjoyed the fish and chips. The mushy peas were also surprisingly delicious. The bartender was very friendly. She took our order at the bar, had us go upstairs to find a table, and then brought the food up to us. Would recommend!

Popped in here for a pint after a work conference. Gorgeous, old style pub. Loved it as soon as I walked in, BUT the best thing was the delightful, happy bar lady who served me. It's so normal these days to be greeted by someone miserable who barely looks at you, let alone speak and smile, that it was actually a shock! To the young lady on this visit, you stand out and made a difference to my visit. Someone who understands and enjoys their job. Thank you.

Bartender upstairs is a Barca fan.. top tier service

Great variety of draughts. Lady behind the bar with a slender build and long black hair was especially lovely and even brought our drinks outside for us.

Had a nice pint in this pub last week. Well decorated, roomy, not too touristy, and friendly staff. I would definitely come back and try the food next time.

Late PM 'cheeky' pint. Not busy, so only one bar person for a while, so the wait was a bit awkward, but TBF another bar person would have been excessive. I do like this pub.

What a lovely traditional welcoming pub! Amazingly friendly and helpful service this evening. The two women behind the bar were very welcoming. We will definitely be back. Lovely. What a pub should be and very central too. We didn’t eat but the grub looked fine, so will give it a try next time.

The place was pleasant until we were kicked out so we could give the table to others who had made a reservation for the table at the bar. Very unpleasant.

I spent a lovely evening at the Sun Tavern. I had booked a table for my team’s Christmas drinks. The service was fast and easygoing, the wine was good and my colleagues enjoyed the beers as well! There was a small menu of bites to eat which worked very well with the drinks. There was live music which was a real treat. I highly recommend for after works drinks, and finger food. Super convivial atmosphere.

Fuimos a un asado el domingo ante el teatro y desearíamos no habernos molestado. La comida era absolutamente repugnante, tanto que a pesar de que era £ 20 para un asado tuve que dejarlo. Quizás tenía una papa y una zanahoria, no exagere! 🤮 Las papas asadas "crujientes" parecían haber sido amenazadas con el horno y todo estaba nadando en lo que solo se puede describir como chapuza marrón! ! Habría dado a conocer mis sentimientos si alguien se hubiera molestado en venir a nosotros 🙄 Son 50 libras que desearía no haber gastado nunca 😢 ¡Para tu información no se parece en nada a las fotos de aquí, la comida o la decoración! ¡Si te gusta desperdiciar dinero entonces inténtalo!

We had a lovely pre-Christmas afternoon here. It was very close to Covent Garden, but felt far away from the madness and crowds, with a very friendly atmosphere. The food was excellent. An added bonus was we left something behind, and they very kindly posted it on to us, and refused payment for the postage!

Had a few pints upstairs, good staff, people were friendly, good place to settle down for a bit while the feet rest.

On my own, for a lunch stop. One pint and one Fish & Chips. 39 quid?! I queried that, before paying. "Oh, did you only want 1 portion?" Of course I wanted just one portion. 23 quid. It was actually very good, despite the feeling that I had nearly been scammed.

We had a group meal for 14 of us in the upstairs bar, where we had it for our exclusive use for a couple of hours. The food was good and is what you might describe as good honest grub. We opted for the premium set menu, which also included coffee which came as individual cafetieres (a nice touch). We also had a few bottles of the house wine, which seemed to flow well. One of the main things however, was the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff. We were well looked after. A few of us retired to the main bar afterwards for some relaxing drinks. We will be back to this a great little pub.

Lovely pub came across it on accident down an alleyway. Brilliant pint of Guinness atmosphere was great and service was brilliant.

We had a wonderful evening here before the theatre. We arrived slightly early for our reservation but the staff quickly seated us. The kitchen didn't open until 5pm and at 5pm on the dot, someone came and took our order for us. The food was delicious when it arrived, the steak and ale pie is the best I've ever had. We had a children's meal and it was excellent value for money. Excellent venue with wonderful staff. We will be back.

Pre teatro bebidas encantador pub ordenado gran ubicación central hermoso interior y exterior. Lamentablemente a pesar de tener 3 tirones de mano no hay verdadera cerveza en todos por lo que tenía que tener un guiness en buen orden, pero no es lo mismo que una pinta británica de cerveza.

El personal era excepcional, especialmente Tiernan. Nos recibió con una disculpa que nuestra mesa preferida arriba no estaba disponible debido a una función, sin embargo, nos había mantenido uno en el bar. Y nos dio un descuento por las molestias. La comida era excelente

I organised exclusive hire of the upstairs bar for a business reception, uniting our UK, US and European offices. I was looked after by the managers, Tiernan & Milly. Nothing we requested was too much. I can’t recommend this site enough for an upmarket drinks reception

I visited in Mid-April for a post-conference meal with colleagues. Tiernan & Milly couldn't have been nicer and were very hospitable. I can't recommend this venue enough.

Our first restaurant/pub in London. Visiting from Texas, USA. The fellas were very pleasant (handsome) and helpful. The beers were great the fish and chips were fantastic. It’s close to our AirBnb so I’m sure we’ll visit a couple more times. Highly recommend

Had a lovely meal here with my boyfriend, had the bangers and mash which was excellent! Great atmosphere with amazing staff, we were served by a lovely girl called Milly!

We both had a fab evening. A young lady called Milly looked after us and the service was exceptional. Definitely coming here again

Originally booked this pub for a business meeting, super easy to book and tables were all ready when we arrived. So was a natural choice to book again for lunch with friends, good value drinks and food, great atmosphere, not too busy. Good selection of drinks too. Staff friendly.

Great pub with a well spaced function room. The canapés were great and especially the Camembert in breadcrumbs

This is a local pub for people after work and is not suitable for families. Very loud and lots of swearing. We booked and were sat in the bar. Food took a long time to arrive and there was no ketchup or mayonnaise when we asked.

Lisa and Emma looked after us, wonderfully, even down to re-organising the tables to make it more comfortable for us. They couldn’t have done more they were chatty and enhanced the night for us.

Nice and quaint pub with a cool upstairs area. Staff was friendly and they had a very friendly and gentle dog, Leila who came over to my table for a pet. I would return any day for a pet and a pint!

We recently dined at The Sun Tavern and I have to say, what a lovely experience! We were very impressed with the beautiful, art deco building and dined in the upstairs bar. Our waitress was very attentive and the food delicious. I had a fish and chips, my husband a chilli con carne. We also shared some garlic bread and calamari, a bottle of Rioja sealed the deal! We will definitely be back!

Excellent sunday roast, nice selection also for children, Milly was a very attentive waitress, and the playlist that ran on Sunday 24th March was one of the best in London's restaurants so far.

Wife got fish & chips, really liked it. I got sausage & mash sans the onions. Loved the gravy and the sausage, the mash was heavy with chives so if you prefer more potato than chive, let them know. The atmosphere was great, felt like a pub. I'm sure that place is packed on the weekends. The fireplace upstairs was def nice. Service was a bit slow but, again, that was our entire experience in London & Paris.

Went for a veggie roast and sat upstairs - ordered and paid(!) and was then told they’d run out. I was offered other options that were all meaty and as I don’t eat meat the only other similar thing on the menu was vegetarian sausage and mash, which I chose and was AWFUL when it came. The sausages were solid and bland, and the mash lumpy. I asked for roast potatoes on the side (for free as well as the price difference between the roast and the sausage and mash wasn’t fair) and they didn’t come. I also ordered a Bloody Mary which came with a slice of lime and nothing else which is odd, I’ve never had a Bloody Mary like that before. All in all - terrible for food, but the staff were fairly nice and the atmosphere ok. Just don’t ever try to eat here.

We visited the Sun Tavern on Saturday 17th February as a party of three for food in the evening, after having a fantastic day out in London. We originally gave this pub a pretty poor review, due to the service that we received from ONE particular member of staff, that was working in the bar / restaurant area upstairs. After leaving the venue earlier than planned, feeling very upset and deflated, we decided to report the incident to the manager the following day. The reason for changing our review, is down to the actions of the management team that we spoke to, regarding the issue. Vikki the Manager of the Sun Tavern, dealt with the matter promptly and was very professional, respectful and considerate. It’s because of how this incident has been handled, that we could not allow the actions of ONE person to tarnish what was otherwise a great day out, finished off with a visit to a lovely London pub, selling good pub food and drink, coupled with a warm, friendly, vibrant and buzzy atmosphere. Thank you Vikki, for taking the time to listen and for your actions regarding the issue. We will definitely see you again in the not so distant future.

Ordered the pie, and it was delicious. My wife's came up a bit cold, but the staff were very apologetic and sorted it and gave us a free desert to compensate. Prices wee reasonable by London standards.

Absolutely dreadful burger, small, dry and overcooked. Crazy expensive too. Avoid. Beer was fine, and the staff were great though. Just don’t eat in here.

Appalling service here this evening.One barmaid trying to sort out miscommunication regarding a meal whilst a barman was wiping cutlery all whilst three to four people were waiting to be served.I have drunk here many times being local but this is the worsst service Ive experienced

Called in for a quick pint on my way home mid-afternoon. Place looked like it needed some tlc but might have been post-lunch mess. Paid £7 for a pint of IPA, which was tasteless - I left half of it. On the plus side, bar staff were alert and got served quick. Won't go back - plenty of other options.

As a tourist, stay away from this place. I don’t know if I’m not familiar with bar service in London, but the service here was terrible. I went in and asked the bartenders where I could sit, and they told me the area was full but I could try upstairs. I did and I asked the bartender there if I could sit anywhere. He looked at me weird and said yeah. I went to sit down and no one acknowledged me for a good 15-20 minutes. The bartender that had told me yeah had sat down and was eating food. I actually waited to see how long it would take the other bartenders to come and take my order. No one did. I finally got up and asked another bartender if I could order some food. She said yeah and took my order. They brought my fish and chips and no one checked in on me after that. The fish and chips were dry and bland. Again, I’m not sure if I’m not familiar with bar etiquette in London, but this was terrible service.

A cosy pub between Holborn and Covent Garden (closer to the latter) that doesn't get too crowded and drink prices are reasonable for the area.

Ordered food, server then disappeared for at least 20 minutes and our meals- obviously microwaved - stood in the dumb waiter for 10 minutes. It was barely warm, server didn't rush to collect it. When I said it was cold, he just sent it back to the kitchen where they remicrowaved it. Rubbish. First and last visit

It was a very nice place we went for a couple of beers and some food and due to the rain it was not so crowded so we enjoyed it there.

Great pub meal very friendly staff

We visited on a late Friday afternoon between Christmas and New year, and it wasn't too busy. Prices were relatively good compared with other pubs we visited. Drinks were fine and we got seats downstairs for the four of us . We had a pre-theatre meal upstairs and the experience was mixed. The cheeseburger, chicken burger and fish & chips were good pub grub, but the beef in the pot pie was a tough as old boots and most of it was left. When we mentioned this on the collection of the plates the waitress merely said 'that's a shame'. I would of expected some recompense, but none was forthcoming.

Good place for a quick pint after work

On a December Friday evening in WC2, 4 of us were looking for a pub to chill in for a little while. Many pubs today are pretty soulless, but the Sun isn’t one of those. It has a great atmosphere, very friendly clientele, some great tunes playing too (and not too loud) We managed to grab 4 stools by the bar, got served by Tiernan (Sorry if I’ve spelt that wrong), a cracking guy from Ireland, really made us feel welcome, drinks were served quickly and at a good price. Now there is apparently an Irish saying “Strangers are friends you haven’t met yet”. And we ended up chatting to two Texans, who have retired to the UK and are living on a wide beamed canal boat, lovely people and we had a good chat and a laugh. Then got another round served by Liz, again great service, then it was out into the cold night air, with Tiernan saying “Happy Christmas Mick”. Absolutely fantastic experience. If you are in the area, give it a try tell them “Mick sent you”.

Staff couldn't be kinder and a fantastic variety and quality of vegetarian options. Was London only 2 weeks and ate dinner here 3 nights!

Staff were polite and helpful. Reminded me of an old fashioned boozer. Look forward to returning.

Booked this online as travelling to London for a theatre break . The table was reserved as promised . The bar man could have done with a better personality but that is a minor thing . The applewood burger and chicken club were delicious but the skin on fries seemed over cooked as too crispy for my liking .

Lovely little pub with good size portions of food and decent vegan options ( the sandwich was lovely). Staff were friendly and helpful and there was a nice atmosphere. Will visit again next time we're in London.

Came here with a friend, just on an off chance, and really enjoyed our little pit stop. The pub was actually not that busy, although it was only 3pm on a Thursday, and had a nice cosy setting. Upstairs seating available too but did not get to see that. Can recommend the loaded fries! Did not expect so much toppings but they were not stingy with it.

A recent visit here after many previous visits and once again did not disappoint. Never quiet and often with tables reserved in the main ground floor bar area the range of beers (I love a Beavertown Neck Oil!) and very friendly service. We didn’t eat on this occasion but will definitely be back!

A good place for a quiet Sunday drink and meal. I was with a friend and we had a good time. The manageress was really good. Helped with ejecting a somewhat 'vocal' patron and also with ordering food when there was a little confusion. Kudos. I'd go back, but probably just for a drink.

My 75 year old mum got severe food poisoning from the battered chicken dish. (vomiting & dihorrea) My sweet potato dish was cold-to-lukewarm inside, but the two steak pies were very good. Staff were lovely and the decor was fab. Many stars lost for mum's food poisoning.

Ordered food with three friends. My order didn't go through and I had to wait 30 mins after my friends had eaten to get my food. Server was very rude despite the mistake being made by them. Plenty of other options in the area. Choose them

Really bad service, we ordered sharable items, yet we could not get extra plates when we asked. Food was ok but nothing g special. The hard cider was fine.

A group of ten friends dropped in for a few beers after a quarterly reunion lunch, all of us being former staff or partners of former staff at Queen Mary College of the University of London. The guys and gals behind the bar could not have been more friendly and helpful. A lovely pub, highly recommended.

Always go to this nice and friendly boozer within 50 yards of Covent Garden Station ,full range of drinks available, also food ,we haven't eaten ìn here ,but it looks good .Great place to go for a pre theatre drink if meeting people ,doesn't get as crowded as other places ,and prices not as expensive.
