Vinegar Jones in South Lakeland

Visited here after seeing they did GF fish and chips and wasn’t disappointed. Lovely and fresh even though we were quite close to closing time, clearly labelled and boxed up and they even had GF vinegar. Perfect enjoyed sitting on the lakeside.

Decent enough Gluten free fish although the portion of chips was rather mean, also if eating in (as we did) having your food served on a china plate would be much nicer than eating from a nineteen seventies style chicken in the basket plastic basket especially at £12.50

Looking through my previous reviews of Vinegar Jones, I am sorry to say but this place is going downhill. It started off as amazing for me, then some room for improvements and now it is heading to the level of being poor fish and chips. We arrived on a day when there was no seating due to tour groups. No issue, they rely on that business to survive. But the quality of the fish and chips was really poor. I mentioned the Oil issue in a previous post which is still present. I tried Driftwood earlier in the year and now I think that was better than my most recent Vinegar Jones experience.

Absolutely shocking. £23 for this. Service was atrocious, staff don’t care. Got home had to throw it in the bin . Fish cake was shrivelled. Fish was anaemic .

Visited here again whilst visiting the area. Always lovely to feel normal whilst having coeliac disease. Gluten free fish and chips are on offer and do look good; can’t comment on the taste as I don’t like fish so just chips for me. They offered GF vinegar as well which was a nice gesture. The muggles amongst the group enjoyed their sausage and chips. Sat upstairs this time and the place is lovely and welcoming. Will be back again I’m sure.

We got chips cheese and gravy and 2 double cheese burgers. Firstly onto to chips cheese and gravy. Chips weren’t crispy enough, but cheese and gravy was Bob on. But then onto the double cheese burgers, burger patties were anaemic and way too pale. Taste was slightly below average. The buns were a great disappointment. No seeds and far too big. Salad was just as bad. Just lettuce! No tomato’s or even onion. Salad should be a selection of vegetables and not just one! The worker was a small lad and he could barely see over the till. He Couldn’t hear what I was saying. He was very polite tho I must say. Food came relatively quickly but was way way way to overpriced. Kingfisher In Keswick remains to be my favourite takeaway in Cumbria.

We had fish and chips x 2 to eat in . Chips were dry cold and inedible and one of the portions of fish was really small . Fish was greasy , not very flaky and batter soggy. Whole meal just terrible given premium price to sit in and eat in addition to meal. We did complain and when chatting to manager felt quite intimidated . He was very defensive stating chips were dry because only new potatoes were available and kept repeating there had been many positive reviews . Did not want to accept any criticism at all however did reluctantly offer full refund for meal when I stood my ground. Later whilst chatting to locals who had regularly been customers stated that shop had recently been bought by new owner and quality not good , mainly just aimed at tourists . My advice , best avoided if looking for decent local fish and chips . Generally overpriced and in the main poor quality with poor portions To the manager / owner . Don’t rest on previous good reviews, need to improve or people will simply not come . Premium prices need premium products and service .

We’d planned a fish and chip dinner and Vinegar Jones had some great reviews. The fish was cooked while we waited (which took no longer than 10 mins for our order of five fish) and the chips were also very fresh and great portion sizes (three large were more than enough for five people). The mushy peas and curry sauce were delicious. I’d definitely stop here again if in the local area.

Having lived in Troutbeck Bridge in the past this was our favourite Chip Shop. Turning the clock forward some 30+ years it was great to call in again. The current owners have maintained the quality approach & super organised during an extremely busy service. Excellent Fish that was coated in a lovely batter & chips to match. Superb!

Enjoyed the GF fish and chips! The gf fish and chips were delicious and we would recommend! However, the servers were very annoyed about us ordering gluten free because “it’s a pain” and “it’s awkward”. I can’t help being coeliac. Nonetheless, we really enjoyed them. We believe the staff need to be a little friendlier.

Can't comment on the food as, despite information on the internet which said it was open today from 12-8 and had been updated by the owner, it was closed! How disappointing. Been waiting for this since Sunday. No opening times on the door or window either.

I recently visited Vinegar Jones Chippy in Bowness on Windermere and had a great experience. We ordered the gluten-free fish, chips, and peas, and I must say, it was probably the best gluten-free fish and chips I have ever had. The staff was very friendly and the early evening visit added to the charm of the experience. I highly recommend this place for Fish and Chips especially if you follow a Gluten free diet

Have been coming here for over 25 years and visit every time we come to the Lake District which is about 4 times a year. The food is very good and gluten free options are welcomed however the constant upselling of items is painful, do you want a better fork for an additional 20p per person, do you want a ketchup Sachet at 50p per Sachet, do you want carrier bags at 30p bag… is just painful, include all this in your pricing and let people enjoy the chip shop experience… as your good at that and it would also be nice if you had not shut the seating area upstairs at 2pm on Monday the 12th February as it was freezing cold outside and we had to take our food back to the car and we were not advised the seating was closed before we spent a healthy amount for takeaway food in your chip shop….

Really disappointing. Appreciate I was in quite late (19:45) but it wasn't as they were closing the door. The fish was not cooked to order - it was overcooked and chewy with soggy batter. The chips were also stale and chewy. At £26 for 2 x fish and chips with a pot of gravy, I expected better. Will stick with our usual The Little Chippy in Windermere next time, always fresh to order!

Nice staff however the food is nothing but average. Chips were bland and was given gravy instead of curry but was to far to travel back to swap it. On the whole I can't recommend them.

Best Chippy in bowness by far. Fresh Hot Tasty Chips. Very clean eating area upstairs, friendly staff and quick service. Great value for money considering it’s in bowness. Will continue to visit whenever in the area.

Now this place was an excellent choice for Fish and Chips when visiting Bowness-on-Windermere but standards have slipped. On a recent visit, we noticed the Fish was really greasy. I appreciate that the cost of ingredients has skyrocketed but given you a “tourist” destination you can probably get away with price increases that regular establishments cannot. Please return the quality to its previous high standard. I have been previously on at least 4 different occasions and noted the high quality of the products.

This is a great place, particularly given the seating upstairs. The meals we bought were all really good, particularly the fish and chips. All reasonably priced as well. Would highly recommend.

Excellent fish and chips, good portion size and importantly for me gluten free. There is a wide range of gluten free food all cooked in a separate frier.

We were in a bit of a hurry and one of our party is disabled. The staff were great and pulled tables and chairs from the street so we could sit in the shop to eat our supper. Thanks for this and the fish and chips were good as well.

Seemed to have a good reputation but very disappointed with the size of the fish. It was so small and cost over £6. The chips were okay. No plates if you eat in just small plastic baskets to make the amount look bigger. I will not be returning and wouldn’t recommend.

It’s 5 years since we last visited Bowness and one lasting memory was the fish and chips here, but , sadly yet another eatery that has fallen by the wayside. Ordered two fish and chips and within in less than two minutes the food was delivered (find it hard to say served) as was just shoved on our table so swiftly we were taken by surprise! Fish looked pale and wasn’t, on the whole, that crispy and fish itself tasted rather dry, chips were just okay but I wouldn’t recommend them either. Sad days.

Came in here last night whilst visiting the Lakes with friends (well nutcases 😂) & the service with a smile, laughter & attentiveness was just fantastic! 😉 The food was beautifully cooked 😉 (I had curry & chips) scoffed the lot as it was so delicious 😋 We ate upstairs in the seating area & the lovely lady (sorry, I forgot her name) came up with our food & cutlery. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff here & whenever we are visiting again, it's definitely our go-to place to eat! Thanks, guys, for making the end of a brilliant day even better. 😘

Would recommend this great fish and chip place. It was very busy but the staff were so efficient and friendly we didnt have long to wait to be served. There is a take away option or a large seating area upstairs. We are not big eaters so the server suggested we each had a child's portion and this suited us. We got half a big fish and well enough chips for us. The fish was lovely and tasty and the seating area was spotlessly clean.

Picked up fish, chips and peas to takeaway. Absolutely delicious, peas came in a separate pot, which was a nice touch. Fish was lovely and white with a beautiful batter and chips were cooked to perfection. Not the cheapest chip shop we've visited but we certainly had a lovely tea. Definitely recommend.

Visited on a rainy day in August, thankfully there were tables available upstairs. Food was brilliant - nicest fish we’ve all had in a long time, good chips and peas too. Nice condiments provided too (Heinz ketchup, Mayo, tartare sauce). Food was served to us upstairs really quickly. A little bit pricey however appreciate costs have gone up everywhere, and would definitely rather pay a little bit extra for this good quality food. Think it was £45 for 3 x fish and chips, 1 x kids sausage & chips (with a free juice carton), 2 x peas and 2 drinks.

Fish is fresh and crispy chips are really good not greasy or overly salty vegetarian and is cooked in vegetable oil

Although the upstairs area was not available for us, we loved sitting outside behind the restaurant with our amazing fish and chips. The batter was perfect and the chips were perfectly formed and tasted delicious. Friendly staff service and clean loos upstairs. Very pleasant indeed.
