Village Deli in Epping Forest

When going for one of our walks we always try and end near this lovely Deli in Chigwell. Normally a coffee, which are excellent and although we try not too, we always succumb to one of the pastries or cakes which are sublime! Everyone working here are so welcoming and friendly. There is seating inside and outside and everywhere is absolutely spotless, as soon as a table is empty it is cleaned ready for the next lucky customer. Absolutely terrible counter service. The young women serving are all so unfriendly and hostile with attitude problems as if to say top the customer "How dare you interrupt my time staring into space?! I will never, ever cross their threshold again. Note to the owner: If they hate working at Village Deli so much, just give them all their P45s and do all your customers a favour.

Visited Deli with my family on a Sunday and was greeted with the biggest smile from the staff.Ordered 2 blt and 2 smoked salmon bagels plus coffee and was served within a couple of minutes. The food was delicious and so was the coffee. Although both me and my husband are quite fussy with coffee we enjoyed it till the last sip.

I recently had to arrange platters for a funeral wake for the following day. I spoke to Aaron and Adrianna who were extremely friendly and managed to fulfil my request without any trouble. We live an hour away and when we arrived the platters were ready for collection. The food was so fresh even though they had little time to prepare. Thank you Village Deli for all your help during this extremely sad time. We will certainly use you again

I can really recommend the prosciutto mozzarella and rocket on a cholla roll,the different flavours really work very we'll together!

I went with a couple of friends for lunch. We all ordered different things: Prosciutto, mozzarella and rocket in a panini and two different salads. All were delicious and I would highly recommend the egg and potato salad - yummy!! We all had coffees and shared a slice of their homemade orange and coconut cake. The coffees were outstanding and so was the cake. The deli is a great place to go for a very affordable snack and we will definitely be going back soon.

I have been visiting this deli when working nearby for a couple of years now. Main reason being it's an easy walk from my branch office. I must say that the standard of service for walk in / take away customers is appalling. The girls behind the counter are stony faced, extremely unfriendly and prepare your food as if they really can't be bothered to serve you. When they start to get your order wrong and you politely have to correct them during preparation, their manner then turns beligerant. You are then presented with a plastic wrapped lunch, which is dumped on the counter as they turn and walk away. This is such an unwelcoming deli. The manager is happy to carry on ignoring your presence while you wait to be served, despite making eye contact. The quality of the food does not justify the price. Luckily for customers there are now a couple of other places nearby where we can take our business. I for one, won't be returning to Chigwell Deli. They have had a monopoly on the parade for so many years, now with competition nearby they will soon realise they need to change their attitude or risk having all their customers dessert them.

Was just passing in the area and stopped for a coffee. Hate to say,much better than the coffee chains and the girl who served me was professional and definitely knew how to make a good cup of coffee!!!

Meet regularly with a small group of friends. Always enjoy the food,tried recently the new toasted pasta salad with courgette which was lovely.

I am a regular and never really left a feedback before. I love the various food and the occasional additions they have of salads and snacks and the coffee is the best I had. The girls are always happy to see me and make sure that I am happy with my orders.

Had the scrambled egg with avocado:delicious. Service was great and quick. Lovely place ,I will definately come back.

Visited the Village Deli after a friend recommended the coffee. I had a perfect latte and could not resist the display of bagels: had the smoked salmon and cream cheese which was delicious. For a bonus, prices are pretty keen. Will definitely come again.

If there was an option for no stars I would have chosen it. I visited this to get something for breakfast. When I went in, there were four members of staff behind the counter. One was cleaning the coffee machine, the other three were seated, chatting and eating and drinking. It took three minutes to acknowledge my presence. After my order was placed, the sitting, eating and drinking resumed. There must have been a shortage of gloves because the only time one, yes one, was used was when my panini was taken from the grill. This was worn on the right hand, the one holding the knife. The floor was filthy, as were the walls. There was a notice n the door stating no dogs so I wondered why nothing was said when a man walked in with a dachshund and sat at table. A person was vaping. An appalling place that does not deserve customers. Ii, for one, will not return. I would rather go hungry.

As a regular, I find the food to be very good and tasty. Everything, especially the bagels have been good and fresh but the two ladies there don't ever smile and act as if they don't want to be there. No passion in their work and the prices are high which is fine as quality is good but service should also match but definitely does not. Change the staff and this place will be a lot better!

I was treated badly by 2 rude female staff last November at this Deli. I was overcharged and got a refund when I complained. I have just visited again after one year and was treated in the same manner by the same staff. There was also a problem with the bill again. I was treated like I had done something wrong and they both stood there glaring at me. I wonder if the manager looks at these reviews. I would not have them working for me! The deli is nice, but I don't want to visit again.

Staff (probably Eastern European) at pains to tell us they were closing in half an hour. However they then 'got on with it' once all 5 of us started spending money!! My cheesecake and coffee were excellent. Other delicious-looking food also available and 2 of us bought savouries too. Could have been more welcoming, borne out by some of your other reviews. Handy for the tube though.

Don’t go in! They don’t want you there.... You are disturbing their day by asking for ANYTHING You are disturbing their day by merely existing inside their so called deli Ps I would have given 0 out of 5 but apparently I’m not allowed...

Average in terms of food quality but staff have an attitude problem. Nothing special but worth dropping by if you need a sandwich for lunch.

Ended up here after our usual breakfast venue was closed. What can I say ,dirty tables , rude unfriendly staff - she had a bad nights sleep apparently, cardboard panini, they forgot our tea overall the worst breakfast experience I have had in a long time,how they remain in business I do not know AVOID

We are near to completing the London Loop and veered very slightly off route to eat lunch in Chigwell. What a delightful little deli!.We all had salads and bagels or quiche. The staff were really helpful, putting our packaged salads on plates and packing up the cake that we also purchased for later on during our walk! It seemed very busy all the time we were there so looks like a very popular place locally.

A local deli that also had a few tables that you can sit and eat there produce in . Been going here since it opened and I would say they make the best cappuccino I have ever had and always consistent, there smoke salmon beigels are also very good. A bit slow in service that needs to be with a smile but otherwise a great little place to relax and watch the world go by.

A small & rustic, quite convenient place to have a coffee. Better in the summer as you can also sit outside. Coffee quality was pretty good and there were a few light bites available but not a huge range. Staff could have been a little more interactive. There wasn’t much conversation or smiling going on but they may have had a busy day!

The staff are so rude it put me off ever returning. Shame, used to be a lovely place to eat and relax.

Stopped here this morning for a coffee. I had an iced coffee which was disappointing not as good as I have had before. Will be back to try again and sample the coconut and orange cake that looked delicious.

El personal aunque estamos muy grosero, y el servicio es lento. Tuvimos largo terminado nuestra comida antes de nuestras bebidas llegamos.

Really enjoyed having a catchup coffee and bite to eat with a friend but i found the staff to be extrememly rude - had no manners at all. No please or thank you!!!!

Good little find. Does authentic Jewish foods. Bagels. Garlic gerkins. Potato latka. Etc. Service is hit and miss. Constantly having to repeat yourself

Upon entering the Deli this afternoon I gathered the items that I wanted to purchase and waited in line. A female staff member completely ignored me and acted like I was invisible. The previous reviews on here are completely accurate and I can't comprehend why the owners aren't paying attention to a stream of negative reviews.

The fodd is really delicious and nicely presented, however the staff leave a lot to be desired. Unsmiling, unfriendly and robotic, and you just know that they are speaking about you as soon as your back is turned. Shame really as the food is good and reasonably priced. Nearly everyone I speak to says the same thing about the staff, and the same goes for the staff in the Chigwell branch. Maybe the owners need to have a quite word with them, as it can make you feel quite uncomfortable at times.

We stopped of for a coffee and croisant and to collect some genuine bagels, which are far superior to the supermarket versions. The food and drink were OK but the service was efficient but unsmiling, so we didn't really feel welcome.

The restaurant was good and then they decided to charge for hot water even though you are having lunch. Service has become awful, no customer service. Don't go here unless you don't mind paying for hot water!!!!!! Disgusting.

Recently stayed in the are and on a number of occasions enjoyed breakfast at the deli of a smoke salmon & cream cheese bagel.Also the coffee was quite good.

Stopped here for a sandwich yesterday. Asked the waiter to clear the table so he came over and removed the cups but left the crumbs laying there. We had to wipe it clean ourselves. The sandwiches were OK but they do need to look at housekeeping better.

Good kosher food here.its a small local deli with about twenty covers.very clean,not too expensive.try their hot salt beef bagels.good takeaway selection.

Food Is good nice bagels salmon there a bit slow in there and the people who work there need to sharpen up on there English and smile a bit more but food is good

This review is for the Loughton branch of which I visit often now for scrambled eggs & granary toast. and the most gorgeous smoked salmon. They even chop up some raw onion which is the correct way to serve all finished with a lemon wedge. And salad. The eggs are cooked lovely tell them if you want them soft and they will oblige. Unlike certain other places In Loughton who can't cook eggs. But here they are great. I usually have a double expresso which again is a really proper expresso strong with a good crema not just a cup of black coffee as others do. All this for less than £7. Go give them a try

I went here with my partner for lunch and I ordered a mozzarella, sun dried tomato panini and he ordered salmon and cheese sandwich, both ordering lattes. The lattes were great! They came out hot and was the typical latte portion. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the staff were quite pleasant! We stayed around for a while and just looked out the window, chatting, and drinking our lattes. Unfortunately, the food was a bit strange. I was lucky that my mozzarella, sun dried tomato mix is naturally delicious but I think it would have been better as a hot panini and should be served with the cheese slightly melting onto the bread and tomatoes. So having these strange cold chunks of cheese on a sandwich with only three small pieces of tomato was very disappointing. I only ate half the sandwich because I ran out of tomato and as mentioned, since the mozzarella wasn't warm, there was just no flavor... My poor boyfriend didn't realize he should have opted for a bagel instead of a sandwich because it came on very very boring, simple white bread. The sandwich was so small and again, just was not flavorful. He is a machine though so he ate the sandwich and the other half of my uneaten sandwich.I wouldn't mind recommending this place for some coffee or maybe a pastry, they even have little pasta salads or samosas etc. But I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for lunch unless you specify instructions like asking for the sandwich to be heated. It has great potential! Plus there is nothing else around so you may just have to go here whether you want to or not :) You can just learn from my mistakes and you should be fine!!

Excellent food, especially duck with jacket potato. Service was good and price also OK. Definitely worth a visit, good venue to go to for a snack + dessert.

Went to the local deli on Saturday about one'ish to get some bread and bagels. Once again they had nothing there! If I was willing to wait for 10 minutes I could have had some bagels that were being cooked. So why did the staff not start cooking them earlier? I find the majority of the staff there extremely unfriendly, bordering on rudeness! It's a shame there is no other coffee shop/deli on the parade, they would steal all the trade from this awful place. The food that they sell is ok, you just have to remember that no one smiles or says thank you.

Is ok in here if you don't mind clearing your own table whilst the staff chat away behind the counter, and do you a whole favour by wiping the table down, only after being asked. The food is actually ok, just the service leaves a lot to be desired.

Loughton High Street is awash with eateries and coffee shops, so anything new has to be good in order to survive, and this is certainly good. A great selection of food, well prepared, well displayed and reasonably priced. This is reflected in the number of customers, many of whom no doubt return again and again. Their takeaway menu is great too except as with another café in Loughton, they too have this ridiculous practice of not providing plastic knives because of "health and safety". The only downside is that the staff, though efficient, are not over-friendly. That aside, this deli will go from strength to strength I'm sure. I would definitely recommend it and will visit again.

The food is good, although the coffee wasn't great. I've read several other comments about the staff smiling, and I have to admit, I have never seen them smile and the welcome is very cold as well. Perhaps a little backgreound music would enlighten their mode, but something isn;t right behind the scenes, the staff are always so miserable.

I come here evety morning to have a cup of delicious latte with a salmon bagel. I also love the sultana cheese cake.Every time i pop in the staff is busy doing something around the shop, this girls are never staying, always smilling. I don't know why there are people telling they are rude, i was always greeted with a smile. For me this is the best place to have a coffe or even lunch.

I come almost every day for the coffee and stuff always meets me smilling. I think this is the best place in the area to have a cup of coffee and enjoy a good atmosphere. Highly recomended!!!

The food here is generally decent ( all the salads are very good and the potato latkas, bagels are nice). The coffee is great. However, the staff are some of the most unfriendly you could find in a local cafe/shop. The people on trip advisor who have said the staff there are always smiling are either a) going to the wrong place or b) have some vested interest. My family live locally and I have popped in for a coffee there more than 50 times and have never seen a smile or been welcomed. In fact, I brought it up with my family and they all said they had experienced the same. If they sorted that out, this place would be perfect.

Great food great coffee and best of all the staff are friendly. I use the Village Deli every morning before work and it's the perfect start to my day!

Great place, great coffee, great food the chicken schnitzel in a khola roll is to die for! and most off all the staff are lovely always happy to help and always have a smile on there faces, visit the deli most days.

I go to village deli in chigwell two to three times a week and the girls always know what I have as I'm a regular, everyone is so friendly and it's a lovely little deli to go too, the food is delicious and it's quick service, I suggest to everyone that they go and visit and try it out

This a a great place with lovely staff. Recently I left without paying and when I went. Ack in, the owner was so lovely to. E. I would not go anywhere else for my salmon bagel. The lunches are great and so is the salt beef. This is for the Loughton branch although I do have coffee at the Chigwell one.

Assumed that with Chigwell being an affluent area the cafe would be top notch and that quality would be great but found service to be unfriendly, direct and cold to the extent that I only ordered coffee in the end. Food display was most unattractive - full of condensation, and food looked unappealing. Service was very 'crash, bang wallop' - no finesse - was like being in a good old working men's 'caff' but without the smiles and banter.The interior is fine but nothing special. Outdoor seating is available. Have since read the other reviews describing great service. I didn't experience this at all. Poss need to be a regular to develop a relationship and experience any warmth here. Has the potential to be an amazing cafe - only one in the parade and plenty of shoppers in the local shops.

The beigels/challah/herring/chopped liver are all really lovely, but this place is ruined by the awful attitudes of the ladies who work there. They are completely unfriendly, I have never seen one smile or interact nicely with a customer. They do the absolute bare minimum and nothing more, it's really awful. I would never feel like I could ask them a question about something or ask for a special requirement, they give off an air of completely not caring.

Wonderful coffee, lovely food and very warm and friendly staff, even though they are always busy serving the clients but nevertheless they always find a reason and time to give you a smile. They make the best coffee is town and I absolutely love their cholla rolls and platzels with the various fillings, food is always fresh. I'm one the regulars at the Chigwell deli and visited the Loughton branch just lately, love the atmosphere and that they have cosy seating space . I always recommend this place to my local and out of the area friends and no one gets disappointed. Will be coming back for more definitely!

Really enjoyed my trip to the village deli - had a great coffee (and I'm really particular about my coffee!) and bagel there and the staff couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. Brought back latkas and fishballs for my family and they were a huge hit! Really delicious. I'll be a regular here.

Set in the lovely village of Abridge, the Bridge Deli is a great place for breakfast. Good food, reasonably priced and a friendly atmosphere

This place does great coffee, food is fresh. Far to many tables, almost on top of each other. Will not be rushing back.

Dropped in at the Village Deli for breakfast several times when we were staying in the area last year. The coffee was good and we enjoyed a bagel with cream cheese & smoke salmon.We'll be back in the Chigwell area this coming June and we'll certainly be returning to the Deli.

When I visited the staff were extremely rude. When I asked where my food I ordered was which I never even received because they misheard what I ordered, they acted as if they never even heard me in the first place and were talking about it behind the till. The service in there is awful never going back!

I had an excellent experience at Village Deli and I would recommend it to anybody looking for good food and coffee.The bagels and salad were fresh and tasty, as usual.The coffee there has to be one of the best I have ever had, complimented by the wonderful cakes and snacks.

We've visited the one in Loughton which has plenty of seating. Food is varied and fresh and inexpensive. Staff are friendly and helpful. A great little place for a delicious quick lunch

I go into the village deli at loughton approximately 3/4 times a week I find staff helpful and polite an extensive deli counter, bagels,pastries yummy all day snacks. Proprietor exceptional .... Jax

Went for coffee and brunch,best bagels with a variety of fillings on offer,egg mayo with onion delicious.Good hot latte served with complimentary biscuit.Staff pleasant and helpful,finished with a piece of cheesecake,left very happy and full.Cafe does get busy at lunch time.Will be going back soon,also offers takeaway service.

Chigwell needs places to have a coffee and chill. The Deli is the nearest to it. The food is fine but the service dreadful. Rude, slow and expensive. The problem is there is nowhere else.

You must check it out, I had a fab lunch then went back later with a mate for coffee and mouth watering cheese cake it was heaven.

By pure chance I stopped at the Village Deli in Chigwell and had the most delicious brunch. Smoked salmon with a Mediterranean salad followed by cheesecake. I understand this is homemade every morning and you can tell!They told me they have just opened a new Village Deli in Loughton and I must go! Great find – so nice to have freshly prepared, true deli style food.

Toasted bagels with melting butter and freshly smoked salmon.....YUM!!!!Whilst it's only a tiny shop, the offerings are delicious and fresh.A sister deli has just opened in Loughton, bigger with more space to sit and enjoy their delish goods too!

Totally agree with English-Rose01. Really lovely food but the staff spoil it by being so unfriendly and so unwelcoming. Not one smile whenever I go in there. I hope this is resolved soon because with that important touch this would be one of the nicest places in my local area to visit.

A little deli offering take-away and a few seats inside. A good lunch option for people walking on the London Loop as it's on the link to Chigwell station. Bought a panini and cake while walking to take away - fresh and delicious!

Had a takeaway breakfast cob (we was staying at Travelodge with no breakfast service) The quality of the fillings was excellent and was given a choice of white or grannery rolls. Their menu looked good at very reasonable prices.

After an eight mile walk from Enfield Lock (London LOOP) a coffee and a hot salt beef bagel was just what I needed. Coffee was strong but not bitter, the bagel fully loaded with salt beef mustard and pickles and the service friendly and prompt.

Excellent bagels, my favourite salmon and cream cheese, baggets are lovely too, try the turkey, pickle cucumber and American mustered. the deli has a wide range of salads. The service is wonderful even when the girls there are rushed off their feet. If you like a tast of Israel with a hint of Italy then you can't go wrong with this place.

It's our local deli. It does all the jewish deli foods plus some other middle eastern delights. Platzels, bagels and Cholla rolls always perfectly baked and salmon is superb quality. What's not to like?We go at least once a week.

The coffee in this deli is amazing, however, the service definitely does not come with a smile!I have been coming in to this cafe since it first opened a couple of years ago. In all this time the same staff have never once acknowledged me , or other family & friends as regular customers. The only reason we keep going back is for the coffee, and on rare occasions some food. Seriously the manager needs to explain to the staff how crucial it is to create a friendly atmosphere from the service side of the counter. I see lots of regular customers in there, and I can only imagine EVERY single regular is agreeing with my comments!

This village deli is in Brook Parade Chigwell. We purchased a small pot of chopped herrings, a small pot of chicken livers and a couple of bagels. It was expensive for what it was.We ate the chopped herrings on the bagels same day. The bagels were stale and the chopped herrings were nothing to write home about. (Hey ho, such is life I suppose but now the purchase is very expensive)Two days later, after having a tooth removed, I was told to eat only soft food so thought the chicken livers would be good. I took a spoonful into my mouth and crunched onto a bone the size of my index finger! What was a bone doing in chicken livers?! (Now the purchase has become extortionate!)We took the chicken livers back to the shop (plus the bone!) and the Manager blamed their supplier for this and said he did not know how this had happened. He eventually said "sorry" and gave us our money back. I highlighted the fact that this was utterly dangerous, I could have swallowed the chicken bone and it was their responsibility to ensure that they have some sort of quality control surrounding their produce. I think this fell on deaf ears.If you go there, you have been warned!
