If you think you're something special and want sanitised everything, why not jump on a plane and head to Dubai or somwhere equally as false. Oh sorry it's 2020 and you can't. However, when the lockdown ends, mark my words the Victoria Arms will be open again, with Neil, son of the Great Ralph Daykin, continuing the tradtion of no nonsense real ale and a bag of crisps, served alongside the odd lamb brought in from the cold. If you're prissy, prim and proper don't bother, the owner I am sure doesn't care either way but don't get all up yourself and moan on here just because you want 2020 fake standards. you can go to Spoons in Richmond a few miles down the road and sit knowing you are in modern slavery hell.

We went to the pub , me my wife and her father. We walked from Thornton Rust which took us about 25 minutes. The pub is different to any other ones that we have been in but in a good way. We met the landlord his mother and her other son. They were full of information and history off the area. The beer was nice ( Theakstons) , Black sheep was not available but John Smith's was also on. Log fire was lit and cosy.

We last visited The Victoria some thirty years ago-always promising ourselves that we would return-it hasn't changed a bit-still a step back in time. Landlord somewhat quirky, but happy to chat-probably happy to see customers-the beer was surprisingly well kept. Well worth a visit. This is a review of the pub-there is no restaurant

I suggest people avoid this place. We just dropped in and regretted it. The place is fundamentally dirty. We witnessed very bad hygiene practices. It's a pity the "Scores on the Doors" people don't visit anonymously as customers. Poor quality beer anyway. Unwelcoming atmosphere. Avoid.

We visited last weekend when my 13 year old mixed race son was asked if he was drinking jungle juice. I didn't even understand at first. This was repeated several times -" bet he likes jungle juice" - along with "where's he from them?" And something about being dropped into a jungle. The landlord had clearly had a few (and was smoking his roll-ups behind the bar) and thought he was funny. I never thought I'd have to apologise to my son for someone treating him like that. Absolutely unacceptable treating anyone like that, especially a child. Avoid it like the plague.

Some people will respect the sheer don't-give-a-monkey's on show here, others will think it a bit manky. I liked the place and I liked the guy, and I even put up with him playing a bad-quality karaoke backing tape incredibly loudly, but I have to draw the line at him chain-smoking at the bar. If it hadn't been for that we'd have liked to stay longer. If you go, be prepared to take it as you find it.

The Victoria Arms is like Dales pubs used to be. It literally hasn’t changed in decades. But before you get all glassy eyed and whimsical, thinking it’ll be all quaint and charming... it is not. It still has a very rough look, feel and atmosphere and is genuinely what these remote Dales pubs used to be like. So, before you go... 1. Read all the reviews - the good and the bad, so you know what to expect 2. Go with an open mind 3. Seriously, go with an open mind 4. Don’t expect any mod-cons 5. Seriously, don’t expect any mod-cons 6. Bear in mind Ralph opens when he wants. Try knocking. This is a fantastically authentic old style pub experience, so don’t worry about muddy boots or taking Dogs along... or worry that you’ll be paying through the nose for drinks... but do go!

But what a delight, if you are expecting a barren and sterile place like a Wetherspoons, move on. The landlord is very friendly and likes to chat. To our surprise it was still open with the same friendly landlord . You most go with a open mind and think how the pubs was 100yrs ago . No sheep to be seen but lots of stuffed animals . I like the idea of his draught proof on the windows cills it was a dead foxes bushy tail which I found amusing also the fox that urinates on you has you walk past (Water) was very funny. A must for anyone with a sense of humour and a open mind .

Don't come here if you want three flavours of crisps on offer, or two for that matter. But for a drink in an eccentric dingy dusty old pub this place cant be beaten.

We have passed this pub for years, it often seemed closed, but tonight we finally made it in for a drink. It is almost unratable, as any criteria used normally for pubs doesn't apply here. The only comparison, I can make, would be to compare it to the little, front room pubs you get all over Ireland. Where a family makes a few extra coins by serving drinks.

Quaint and quirky with a fantastic atmosphere and great beer. Tourists, in particular foreign visitors including Americans South and Canadians in particular must call in as it's a real old fashioned country pub which are getting rarer these days. Stop by for a great pint of Black Sheep and soak up the atmosphere and part of the Dales (if you're into posh wine bars it's not for you, well neither is the Yorkshire Dales for that matter!). If you're a family, a couple, a group of friends or walkers then call by. Pool table and dart board to keep the youngsters entertained too.

We also stumbled across this pub after I stated that we would stop at the next pub and have coffee. We also thought it looked closed although a very elderly lady with a cane hobbled around the corner, so we went in... I felt quite guilty when I ordered 1 tea, 2 coffees, and 2 glasses of water, it seemed like it was putting her to too much trouble. Eventually all was on our table and to our surprise the tea and coffee were excellent. It was a fascinating place and I doubt there is another anyway near like it, so, don't be put off, and most certainly don't be in a hurry because she doesn't get around very fast and can only carry one thing at a time. Just made our day ;)

Stumbled over the Victoria Arms one dark night on the way back from Catterick to Lancaster. I thought it was closed as there was almost no sign of life from the outside. Fortunately it was open and what a place it turned out to be. Essentially it is someone's home with a small bar in it. The elderly owner and his wife were sat in the bar surrounded by the ephemera of their life - photos, stuffed animals, posters, you name it. It feels a bit 'Slaughtered Lamb' intitially but in reality is as fascinating trip into how pubs used to be run. Go quick, it's sure to change.

We popped in on a Monday night as all the pubs in the immediate area that we usually go to don’t open on a Monday We arrive at 5:30 opening time and were hardly greeted by Shannon We hadn’t booked, but she found us a table There was a lovely selection of beers and wines and an amazing menu with specials of the day On Mondays they do a night where you can get a sirloin steak for £12 with all the trimmings They also specialise in seafood and there were a number of dishes this included prawns lobsters, monkfish et cetera Who made soup of the day was courgette and sweet potato and this is delicious Between us, we had a steak and kidney pie and there’s also an option of a steak and kidney pudding and two of us had prawn and lobster Thermidor, which was delightful There is a very nice atmosphere in the restaurant. The staff are lovely and the toilets are clean. Thank you, Shannon to you and your colleagues and we very much look forward to our next physics

Ok for a coffee but the staff were terrified of any customers. Not allowed to use the toilet. Long wait for coffee. Shouted at to wear masks we were already wearing. Seemed paralysed by fear - I would avoid even trying to sit inside. They were happy for people to sit outside. Though it was raining hard. Such a shame as a delightful village and would have been a nice break from our walk.

Tried this lovely pub for the first time earlier this week with friends for an evening meal off the weekday menu. I had Scampi which was wholetail, light batter , served with the best chips I’ve had in ages . Others had chicken and burger, all were beautifully cooked and quality ingredients. Eaton Mess was spot on and the sticky toffee and custard had us drooling ! The atmosphere was what you’d want in a lovely cosy country inn, the owners were very friendly, service friendly and quick without feeling rushed. They also accommodated our 2 large dogs offering a nice treat and water. We loved it that much we’ve just returned from Sunday lunch !! Prawn cocktail starters were excellent, more prawn than salad 👍, soup, black pudding and bacon , all served with a warm crusty roll, all were very good. 3 of us had roast beef dinners and one roast pork - the veg was cooked perfectly, as were the mash and roast potatoes. Yorkshire pudding were just right. None of us could find space for a pudding but the menu has something for everyone. We shall most definitely return again.

Excellent place. Clearly this last year has new management as this was a very good experience for 10 of us for lunch en route to our long weekend in Leyburn. Cosy log fire. Welcoming hand pulled cask (theakstons) pulled properly. Food excellent so to the service. Kerb side from road hides a super set up from the back and inside.
