Via Emilia by FOOD ROOTS in Hackney

We came here spontaneously, and surprisingly it was the best place we could have ended up in; wonderful food and Angelo is super friendly!!! Highly recommend, we had so much fun there.

Partner and I came here after a work day, shared entrees (bread and cheese) and then 2 pastas to share (Bolognese and pumpkin ravioli). There was a group of 10 next to us that ordered after us and got their food well before us. Not the best pasta I’ve had, and portion sizes for the pastas are small, compared to nearby places. Decided to stop in at popeyes for another feed because we were still hungry. Service was good at the start so we were expecting it to be excellent. Sparking red wine was the favourite. Not sure if I’d go back.

Ristorantino piccolo ma accogliente. I camerieri molto gentili e simpatici. Ci hanno spiegato per bene il menù e la loro filosofia. Piatti di pasta veramente buoni, loro consigliano 3 piatti ogni due persone e devo dire che le porzioni erano corrette. Dolci molto buoni. Rapporto qualità prezzo ottimo. What a delightful restaurant Via Emilia (by food roots) Fitzrovia is. Not only will you eat incredibly well here, yesterday evening my husband an I shared 3 plates of the most delicious pasta I´ve eaten outside of Bologna, and a singingly fresh salad, perfectly accompanied by a refreshing small bowl of lambrusco, but the warm, informative, kind, caring yet unobtrusive, service will make you feel a valued guest. Thank you very much to Gintare and Shanece, and "the kitchen" of course, for making Andy´s birthday even more pleasurable. Our meal made the perfect start to the night. We´ll be back to try more of those so tempting pasta and sauce combinations soon, confident that the quality of ingredients and the talent in their preparation is assured. A big hug, Catherine

Authentic Italian restaurant that serves really amazing food. I tried many Italian restaurants but they are adapted to UK and often menu is large with few non authentic Italian dishes. This is not the case, their menu is very simple and 100% authentic food. Everything is made as you order so the food is fresh and their homemade pasta is served at perfection

They claim to be authentic. But servicing antipasto on paper plates and sharing pasta with one spoon has nothing to do with Italian food culture. One off

Amazing, we ordered lots of small plates tapas style. Get the (starter) fried bread and stuff it with the cured meats, and cream cheese and thank God you saw the review. Best thing I ever tasted. Also recommend the fizzy red wine. Don’t remember the name but ask the waiter and thank me later… x

It was just an average place. The signature bread was very familiar to Us, We are from Turkey. The "signature meat" served on a paper! The pasta was made from scratch, so what?

Very good place where you can have hand-made pasta in a small-plates-sharing concept. The place is pretty small, tiny chairs, small table, sort of intimate atmosphere. The menu is simple, 6-7 types of pasta, cheese plateau or meat plateau for starters, very basic wine selection. The fried focaccia bread with meats for a starter was quite good, the pasta was pretty nice, though the ragout one felt bit over-cooked. Two desserts were available, we tried both. The tiramisu was lacking flavour, while the chocolate salami was super good. Service was friendly and quick, prices were at an acceptable price-to-quality ratio.

the opposite of modenese home cooking. not that we found out. far too many covers for a tiny restaurant, we phoned ahead as we were ten minutes late, as a courtesy. dude was rude on the phone. waiters rude when we got there. 60 people screaming. clearly no chance of getting anyone’s attention to order so we beat it. and went to pizza express. and were treated nicely by the charming staff. and ate a nice pizza. do better.

One of the worst pasta I have ever had.. way too thick and basically raw. I feel sorry for the staff that was very kind and polite though.

This is just wonderful, truly authentic Italian food. Absolutely perfect. Come and try everything. Cannot fault it! Beautiful.

Walked in here unplanned after googling gluten free places to eat close buy because our first try didn’t have anything. The service from Giacomo was exceptional as was the gluten free pasta. It’s made fresh onsite and honestly it’s the best pasta I have ever eaten and I lived in Italy for a few years! We aren’t local but we will definitely return when we visit London again next. Can not recommend enough!!

My friend and I came here to celebrate 45 years of friendship. I had been here previously 4 years ago with my daughter for lunch. We started with the gnocco frito, 3 pieces for £4. We ordered 1 portion of mortadella for £7. We then stuffed the deep fried pastry with the meat and it was delicious. It's a northern Italian speciality. My friend ordered tagliatelle with mushrooms £12.50 and I had their version of cacio e pepe £11. Both dishes were very rich and tasty. We shared bottle of Pignoletto £29. We were there from 1 till 3 and were not rushed to leave. A small but authentic menu from the Emilia Romagna region of Italy.

Delicious! The pasta was so fresh! It was a little loud in the restaurant because it was busy. Felt really hole in the wall and was a nice discovery. They recommend 3 pasta plates shared between 2 people, but if you’re hungry you can just have 2 pasta plates each (they have small portion sizes to encourage sharing).

The staff were so accommodating to our large group. The food was excellent, so fresh & delicious, service outstanding and so reasonable too. I’ll definitely come back and be recommending this place to everyone. Thank you so much.

Not the best experience - it was suggested to us that all guests should order the same dish to make it easier for the kitchen. Wasn't the best start, but nevertheless we've enjoyed our dinner - the food was nice, but not outstanding. A good place for a quick pasta dish if you fancy one.

It seems a privilege to eat in this place since when you make a reservation they remind you twice that you can stay only for 90 minutes and they send you a text as well, Despite the good quality of food the portions are getting smaller and smaller, and prices are high.

My husband, daughter and I came across Via Emilia early on a Saturday evening and were able to get a table without a reservation. The place is tiny and as others have mentioned the portions are not large but they are very reasonable at 9-12 GBR a serving. And they were delicious!! The three of us had four pastas so we were able to try most of the menu, we ate everything but the paint off the plates! We also shared a bottle of wine and two salads and our total with service was 100 GBR. Look forward to going again.
