After reading great reviews i thought I would make the 60 mile round trip to try the jumbo haddock and chips to be told they hadn't any so opted for the large which was more like a medium, the batter was greasy, the portion of chips were small, I was given a huge serving of scraps which I didn't ask for. Will not be visiting again!!

After hearing many good reports me and my family decided to visit upton fish and chips on the 21/7/2023. After arriving at 5.30pm there was already a substantial queue from I could see, luckily I found a space on the roadside. Me and my mother joined the queue, there was about 10 people in front of us, I was only too grateful that the weather was nice, I wouldn’t have fancied queuing in bad weather, we gradually got nearer to the front of the queue, after about 35 mins we had made it to the front, but then just had to wait an extra 10 minutes as the regular size fish wasn’t quite cooked, the smells were making me hungry, the chip shop itself is only big enough for two people - it was quaint and quirky very retro looking, the staff that served us were pleasant- we ordered the regular fish &chips a mushy peas and a curry sauce- we paid and left to eat the long for fish and chips in the car- I have to say they were lovely, everyone agreed, so worth the 45 minute wait, the only think that stopped me giving 5/5 was the curry sauce, I’m so glad I didn’t pour it over my meal or it would have really ruined it for me- I know it was hand made to their recipe, but it wasn’t what I expected by any means it was so HOT, it wasn’t the nice chip shop curry I was expecting, it was really hot like an Indian curry, my mouth was tingling- the other members of the family tried it and they all said it was too hot and overpowering, I definitely wouldn’t buy the curry sauce again, other than that the fish was battered nicely, it was crisp and the chips were new potatoes- I’m pleased to say I’ve tried them, and would definitely go again

Enough has been written about Upton Chippie and the history of the business. Yes you will have to wait. Yes you are squeezed in to the waiting shed...and all along the street. Yes, maybe you were expecting a larger portion. Set the record straight. A little perfection is better than a lot of mediocre. The wait builds up the appetite. The standing in line is more about meeting old friends and making new. It's about a common cause. Time travel in a meal. I remember riding motorbikes to visit and sitting outside on the grass. That progressed to cars and driving round the corner to park on the old aerodrome. Sitting in the car with the radio on low, windows down, took me back to my youth. These are fish and chips to eat out of the paper. No fancy plate required here. Not everyone will enjoy. Not everyone will return. But I hope enough of us do to continue the tradition of a proper chippy.

Be prepared to be transported back to another era, a time when in typical British fashion, we queued without complaint and talked to those other hungry souls also queuing, about all manner of subjects like we'd known them all our lives. Well worth the wait!!Waiting time to be served varies dependent on the time of year, shortest time we've waited is 15 mins in winter, longest time 45 minutes in summer. The majority of the queue in summer is outside which is no hardship as we chatted to those near to us. In winter make sure you go prepared to keep warm and dry as it's only at the entrance to the chip shop where there is a small out building. The food is cooked in dripping and is tasty, the fish is very fresh and white. There are occasionally other types of fish such as halibut however there was none left at the time we went which was towards closing time so get there early. The only complaint I have being the shop is not always open on the days stated, this may just be in winter as the last 2 times we've been, tonight being one, it has been closed which for those travelling significant distances may be a pain.

We had been planning a trip here after many people had recommended it to us and it is only a 30 min drive from us. We decided on a sunny Friday evening in July and set off early as we knew we would be queuing. We were for around an hour. Set up our chairs on the grass across the road whilst waiting. However there was a storm so we were forced into our cars. It was too far to get back home with them. The rain did not dampen our spirits though and we really enjoyed our fish and chips. They are like no other and I personally thought that I would find them greasy but on the contrary they were surprisingly light and did not leave me feeling bloated. A good portion and delicious. No complaints apart from the rain at the wrong time. A very quaint little fish and chip shop in a little village and well worth a trip out just to say that you have been to a coal fired chippy, as I think this is one of the last; if not the last. The chippy is basically an old shed with no space to swing a fish let alone Cook hundreds of them but they don't half fly off the shelves during the limited opening hours. To avoid disappointment go with an open mind as to what you might end up having as they constantly run out of stuff. We turned up at 12pm today and already no sausage or curry sauce and that's about 30% of all the items they sell. We all had cod and chips and as always it was great, fresh fish, crispy batter all cooked in coal fuelled lard filled fryers. MORE AT TripAdvisor

On Saturday 4th June I traveled all the way from Grimsby, on three different buses, to visit the Upton fish and chip shop, after hearing about it on BBC Look North a couple of years ago. The Upton fish and chip shop can be found on the High Street, and is just a short walk from the village's bus stop. If you are traveling by bus from the north of the county, a 106 bus from Gainsborough bus station will get you to get to Upton. The Upton fish and chip shop is easy to find, and occupies a small Victorian brick building on the High Street. There is a patch of grass to the side of chip shop, which while I was queuing thought would be ideal for putting picnic tables on, as there are few places to sit and eat your fish and chips in Upton, apart from some steps at the side of the road, and a bench a couple of minutes walk away. On the day I visited the queue outside the chip shop wasn't too long, but a couple I spoke to said it was usually much longer, and they had seen people before queuing in the rain. I'm lucky I picked a nice day! While I was queuing I took some photographs, one of them was of smoke coming out of the chimney from the coal fired frying range, that dates back to 1948. It's Art Deco in design, and is green and cream in colour. It's a real museum piece, and there is one identical to it in the Fishing Heritage Centre in Grimsby. Eventually I reached the front of the queue, and I ordered a Jumbo Cod, large chips, mushy peas and scraps - or crispy bits, as the very friendly woman who served me called them. I think the whole lot cost me about eight pounds, that's if you include the can of Coca Cola I bought too.So what's my verdict on fish and chips, from the Upton fish and chip shop. Very good I'd say. The chips were very nice, and the most beautiful golden brown colour I've ever seen, but I couldn't tell they had been fried in beef dripping rather than cooking oil. I was sort of expecting them to taste different, and as for the fresh Grimsby Cod, well that was very good too. Yes, I would definately visit the Upton fish and chip shop again, but I'd get there by car rather than bus next time. Spending over three hours on a bus getting to Upton is a bit much. Finally my advice to anyone wanting to visit the Upton fish and chip shop, is to get there early, as they had run out of Haddock, and had only one Jumbo Cod left by the time I reached the front of the queue. I would hate someone to travel a long distance and be disappointed.

We live 15 miles away from Upton Chippy but we make the journey once in a while for a treat! They only open on Friday evenings and Saturday lunchtimes. They still use beef dripping for frying, and along with the batter they use this makes for gorgeous Fish & Chips. The staff are very friendly. They also use, according to their website, probably the last working coal-fired frying range in the country.Depending on the time you arrive you might end up queueing for a little while, but that just makes you appreciate your food when you get it. We eat ours in the car, but at busy times you need to be careful where you park. It's that popular that parked cars often take up one side of the road, but other traffic (including buses) still need to get through. There's only space for about 6 people in the actual chip shop, and space for another 7 or 8 in the adjacent, undercover room next to it. So if there's a queue when you get there and it's throwing it down with rain it might be best to sacrifice one person to fetch the food whilst the rest of you wait in the car.

I found the use of beef dripping left a nasty taste in my mouth, but it is still nice to see tradition kept alive with the use of a coal heated range and yes the use of dripping.

I was keen to visit the only fish and chip shop in the Good Food Guide. The building, the equipment, the charming service and the sensational quality of the fish and chips in the beef dripping was superb. The after 'glow' of the dripping in the mouth when all had been consumed was something wonderful.

Having heard some good reviews about the food here, myself and a couple of friends decided to try it. After waiting about 25 minutes for the assistants to serve 4 people, I finally got to the head of the queue and purchased my fish and chips. They were quite a disappointment. The chips were soft and greasy and the fish was instantly forgettable. Unless you live in Upton and are really desperate for a quick meal, I wouldn't bother to go there.

Decided to go here having passed while out road cycling in the area. Read earlier reviews on the website. Arrive early Friday evening in anticipation of the place opening and just as well we did. They had started frying and serving. Most fish fried to order and fishcakes if required. Usual sides of mushy peas, had freshly fried haddock and portions differ from small to whale size ;-) Three standard portions ordered and 2 1/2 chips my wife's not a large chips eater. Sat in the car and ate them with salt and vinegar. Lovely food very enjoyable and just as well we went early as while we sat in the car the queue past us. A enjoyable trip to this eatery.

I thought that the fish batter was greasy and the portion was poor value. The sausage that I saw looked more like a chipolata. I would go to the nearby fox and hounds; for not much more money you will get a better product.

We have been promising ourselves to try this place for a long time, after almost an hours wait we were finally served we thought with a wait this long they would be fantasic. The chips were very greasy and the fish nothing special, to be honest I would not wait an hour again for average fish and chips, we rarely go to chip shops and we were dissapointed at an establishment thats supposed to be in the good food guide.

A visit to the Upton chip shop is like stepping back in time. The shop cooks its food in a coal fired art deco fryer and the fat used is beef dripping, which means you get very tasty food. shame its only open Friday and Saturday,

This was the first time we had been here but read the reviews in the paper and had to give it at try. We arrived at 11.30am and as only a few people there was served quickly. It is a tiny place but the 2 ladies were lovely and the fish and chips were excellent and the quality of the fish showed. We will certainly be back and soon and will recommend it to our friends. If you like beautifully cooked fish and chips then this place is really worth a visit.

There's no complaints here (apart from maybe the queue) as everything was great, absolutely some good fish & chips to be bad here... but nothing special. If it was open daily, or there wasn't a 40 min queue I would wholeheartedly recommend Upton chippy as your weekly go to.Obviously, everyone has different tastes, so i'd still say it's a place you need to try and see...... And this review would probably get 4 stars if it wasn't for the hype surrounding this establishment, but things hardly ever meet expectations, and this time it was sadly true for me.

I'm not saying anything about this place. If you don't know it, it's best you keep it that way as the queue is long enough. Unchanged in every way for decades. Original and the best ever. Folk fly into the local aerodrome just to visit. It's that good. But go early, when they run out, they shut, and they don't open for long anyway! Amazing!!!

We discovered Upton Chippy by chance some years ago and couldn't believe our luck. Upton Chippy is one, if not the only coal fired chip shop in England. Everything is freshly cooked in beef dripping and not a kebab in sight.Sally and the team are brilliant, this is real customer service territory. We have tried many "acclaimed " fish n chip shops who are mediocre in comparison, we travel over 30 miles to savour this absolute unique experience. After recommending to friends, they now regularly visit Lincolnshire's best kept secret.Upton Chippy is definitely the place to visit if you want to sample the best traditional fish and chips ever.

Remember the days when the chip shop just sold fish, chips, peas and maybe one or two other things? The days when you didn't have all these stupidly big menus? Your fish and chips where fried in a COAL powered fryer using proper beef dripping! What if you could go back in time to visit one of these traditional chippys, well here it is. You don't even need a time machine this place has it all, the food here is truly tasty, I can't think of a chippy any where that is a good as this place (and iv been too a few in my time) the batter and fish was cooked perfect (I had a jumbo cod) the chips where like no other. It's a no thrills chippy just selling what chippys where put on this earth to sell fish and chips! I been driving past this place for the past few years, the que's are always very long, sometimes upto an hour so I hear, but today with the fireworks on in the village and the heavy rain there was no que so I made the decision to give it a go, what a pleasant surprise. Will definitely go back.

This chippy is a rare find and mark my words will take you back to a time when the world was a better place. The food here, the atmosphere, the nostalgia, the smell, the whole experience, is just fantastic. Really you won't ever better this chippy, no matter how many chippies you go to. First of all the fish here is fresh and never ever frozen. Both cod and haddock are available, we have eaten both on numerous occasions now and it is always top notch, truly consistent and absolutely fantastic, superb you really can't believe just how good it always is!!! The chips are great too, and they use proper vinegar no watered down muck here. But there is more, oh yes indeed fish and chip lovers, here they fry in beef dripping using a coal fired range!!! How cool but traditional is that?!?!? All in all it makes for a wonderful experience, and great value too! With a standard size cod and chips costing just £4.80 and a little more for the haddock. Now just a couple of things to bear in mind at the worlds greatest chippy. First of all it is only open on a Friday night from 5ish till around 8.30p.m. Then again on a Saturday from lunchtime till about 2 o'clock. The queue starts roughly an hour before they open which tells you everything really, and yes they are worth the wait, once you have been you'll understand why. Service is always sincere and with a smile, and be warned once you go this place will be your benchmark. Utterly outstanding!!! Last visit Friday 29th August 2014

We have visited here on and off for many years, prior to being members of Tripadvsor. I suppose that's a good reference on its own as we keep returning time and time again. Were not locals either. Its at least 40 mins on a good day to Upton for us, yet this place draws us back again and again. The queue can be quite long at times, so don't be in a hurry if you call here! Take it all in, and ask yourself as we did for the first time, "why is the queue so long?" It may seem a while, but when you eventually get to the front of the queue, you will know why. The ambiance, the smell, and then the taste!!!We will return for definite, as this has to be the best Chippy in the County. Maybe we will see you in the queue!

No doubt the haddock & chips are very good & we will return; worth warning new customers however that the service is incredibly slow & you risk queueing outside with no shelter for up to 40 minutes. Having visited twice & observed the staff, we are sure they could maybe recruit another staff member & serve far more customers if they really wished to.If they feel a slower service is friendlier, etc & don't wish to change, then that is fair enough, but waiting outside for 40 minutes really is pushing it.

As the curry sauce was home made it was a lot nicer than normal chip shop sauce and unlike fish and chips bought elsewhere there was no greasiness.Well worth a visit and I am sure we will be going again...

I went to this quaint little old-fashioned fish and chip shop for the first time last night. We knew about it from old but the wife hadn't been there since she was about 10. When she told me about it I was thinking 'what could be so special about fish and chips cooked in a coal-fired frying range?!'...once I'd tasted them I realised instantly why we'd driven 18 miles to get there!Although we weren't sure where the chip shop was, the smoking chimney and queue soon gave it away! The fish tasted absolutely beautiful and the chips were delicious. Cooked traditionally in beef dripping it was like taking a step back in time for a brief 10 minutes until they were gone! Neither the fish, chips or scraps were soft or greasy like they often are at other chip shops and they really were an experience to eat. The coal-fired frying range looked brilliant and the staff were talkative, friendly and couldn't do anything else to make it a more traditional experience. Although we queued for around 30-45 minutes, it was totally worth the wait and I'll definitely be queuing again! If you're contemplating travelling a distance or whether you want to queue up then all I can say is just do it; you won't be disappointed and I guarantee you'll want to go again!...I'd go as far as saying these were the best fish and chips I've ever had. Hats off to the staff that run the place, they do a fantastic job.
