The steak sharing platter was amazing. We were well looked after by great staff. Afterwards our friendly barman escorted us personally to the secret speakeasy Prohibition. Thanks for a memorable night.

We went for a meal last night and were really impressed with the food and the service we received. A special mention to Ryan our waiter who made the evening even more enjoyable. Definitely recommend having a meal here and if we are in Chester again we will be coming back.

Expensive claret: decanted out of view with no opportunity to smell beforehand (and unnecessarily so given the vintage) Expensive chips: soggy and smothered automatically in salt mixed with ground up chicken fat branded “chicken salt” (two portions of the same served in mountainous bowls but replaced halfway through eating due to sogginess). “Chef apologises” as the replacements came, with a side of sarcastic nonchalance. Expensive steak: very very nice but spoilt by a REVOLTING marrowbone emptied of actual marrow and instead filled with burned leeks and mushroom trimmings roasted. Decor: faddish, ten-a-penny black and white prints of New York. One assumes B&M supplied the art. Dirty pair of old trainers hanging from a string in the unclean gents’ loo did not scream NY cool. They just looked like a dirty pair of old trainers hanging on a string in an unclean gents’’ loo. Expensive and aimed at the nouveau riche who will overlook standards and taste in favour of conspicuous consumption.

Absolutely brilliant in every way - cocktails, wine, starters, mains, dessert and every member of staff. A truly wonderful evening. East of Hudson cocktail a truly dangerous drink for all the right reasons - slips down so easily. Cheese souffle so light with a delicious stilton sauce, the scallops cooked to perfection. We chose the Black Angus strip 24oz medium rare, carved to share and it was a taste sensation and so tender. The marmite emulsion (be brave) on the carrots was subtle to enhance the taste....so even those who say they don't like Marmite can enjoy.....and then the Choux Pinacolada dessert was sensational.....the lightest Choux you will have had with pineapple sorbet and coconut ice-cream. Every member of staff was engaged, interested, knowledgeable and could enjoy a laugh. We had travelled from Bristol and this was our first time in Chester and we chose this restaurant as it was in the Michelin guide.......they were absolutely right. Just go now!!

Booked for late Sunday lunch 4pm.and was shown "SPECIAL SEATS". These were perched by the bar on the 2nd floor. We were not given any excuse or apology, so we left never to return.

Food was incredible, one of the nicest steaks I've ever had. Our server was attentive and recommended certain cuts, we were disappointed however to not receive the complementary dessert that other tables had received

We attended upstairs at the grill to celebrate my 60th birthday with close family on Friday 11th April ,from the moment we entered the bar for drinks ,we know we were in for a delightful experience ,the champagne and wine were top quality ,the lovely ambience of the restaurant and bar were very chilled and relaxed ,service from Davidson our server ,was excellent ,his knowledge of the steaks available superb , we all chose mixture of fillets ,rump ,and ribeye with a mixture of sides ,definitely recommend the French onion soup we had as a starter ,which was like a meal innit self, steaks were cooked deliciously to our specifications, also the special touch with a birthday card and glass of champagne was a lovely touch ,everyone of out party couldn't rate this restaurant enough Can't wait to return, keep up the good work it's paying off .sorry I didn't take any photos of the meal too busy enjoying myself

This is the best meal I’ve had in decades. Stunning service from the team (Liv) was our waitress. Outstanding. The food was superb, the best steak I’ve had in a long long time. I met one of the staff, Jason, who I think was the owner. Despite his support for Newcastle United, he was one of the nicest people I’ve met. So kind and welcoming, alongside his counterpart Ashleigh, a brilliant team duo. Thank you so much, this meal will stay with me for a while 😉

Previously the staff knew all about the steaks on offer and brought out the uncooked steaks on a board to show you and recommended the best level of cooking. When served they insisted you cut into the steak whilst they were at the table to confirm it was cooked to your liking. Lots of other side stuff, home cooked bread etc. This time staff didn't really know anything, mediocre steaks and very expensive, in fact my steak alone cost £10 more than the full Rio Steakhouse experience down the road which is much better. I assume they are new owners who have let the quality slide downhill from what used to be excellent.

Was in Chester and came here on a freinds reccomendation. Was completely blown away by the quality of the food. We went for the butchers block and it was absolutely incredible, the best steak I've ever had. Somehow the fries tasted like chicken (perhaps cooked in chicken fat?) but both me and my wife can't stop thinking about those damn fries. For dessert we had the Ferrero Roche and pineapple pins colada.

Visited for the first time for a work dinner. The service, drinks and food was all amazing. One of the best steaks I've ever had. Looking forward to going again.

Intimate dinner, special occasion Intimate evening for two... staff were friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the food. The sommelier recommended an awesome wine. All the food was perfectly cooked and presented... we were sighing with every bite.... the music, quietly playing in the background was great, too (with us both being soul music lovers, the classic motown was right up our street), Wonderful place for that special occasion. They make you feel special and those chefs in the kitchens take great trouble over every detail. Even the ice cream for dessert was made in house (and amazing) Would definitely consider it in the future. What a wonderful find. Xxx

Terrible experience from start to finish. Booked her for a family members birthday expecting really high standards however we were greeted by a rather snotty female member of staff (didn’t catch her name) the food was meh 6.5/10 nothing to write home about but sufficient enough that i was kept full. If i was i you and your genuinely thinking of booking here for a special occasion AVOID it, please look at alternative places such as RIO steakhouse in chester. Finally so expensive you’d think you were paying central London prices, not Chester. We won’t be coming back to this establishment, unless a management change happens and/or a menu changes.

Went for a friends birthday hoping to treat him . Started off with French onion soup . It had obviously been microwaved judging by the crusty dried on dribbles on the sides of the bowls . Undaunted we carried on ordering £33 steaks each . Plus £3.75 for peppercorn sauce . Reasoning you pay more you get something good value . The steaks were average , actually quite gristly . Had chips which were like McDonald’s , neither good nor bad just bland . Also had salad which was nice . We had a couple of beers and I’d a glass of house wine . Even so I thought the bill for £165 was over the top . They add on £15 for tips for themselves without asking . On the bill it says you can ask for the tip to be removed with “ no awkwardness” . Sorry , I’d find it very hard asking for this without appearing mean . Yes I’d hoped to treat my friend to his meal but I couldn’t afford £165 and fortunately he offered to go halves . I’m used to eating out in Liverpool where you can get a better meal than this for a third of the price .

MY HUSBANDS TROUSERS WERE SOAKED - A BIT OF TISSUE AND THAT WAS THAT! NO-ONE GAVE A DAMN! I WANTED TO LEAVE, BUT HE WAS HUNGRY AND IT WAS A LONG DRIVE BACK. FOOD WAS MEDIOCRE WITH WAFER THIN BEEF, WINE LIST POOR, BAR SEATS STAINED, MENS TOILETS HAD URINE OVER THE FLOOR AND NOT A SMILE AMONGST THE POORLY TRAINED STAFF! ABSOLUTELY AWFUL! CANNOT RECOMMEND, WILL NOT BE BACK!

We came here for my boyfriend’s (belated) birthday celebration and had a fabulous time. This restaurant is more of an experience. The decor of the space is superb as is the service! We truly enjoyed our meal and felt we were able to sit and enjoy, there was no rush to leave immediately. It is evident that the team work really hard and try to give you the best experience possible, someone even came round with steaks on a board explaining what the best options were that evening. You are first sat in a bar area and have the menu explained to you whilst you have a drink. I had a cocktail which was lovely and my boyfriend had a glass of red. We were then moved to the terrace space outside and ate our dinner there. The space is fabulous and the food is even better- I had a beetroot tartare to start and fish for main, and my boyfriend had the scallops to start and a steak for his main. We were very impressed with our food and thought the sides were also excellent. The team brought over a surprise dessert to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday, and some mini ice cream cones once we got our bill which was very generous. Would absolutely reccomend for anyone to come here who fancies a relaxing meal with excellent service.

Visited yesterday for a family celebration with my husband and our adult son. Great welcome on arrival and a relaxing sit in the upstairs bar with drinks while viewing the menu and making our choices. I chose a fillet steak cooked medium rare, it was cooked to perfection! Beautifully pink in the middle, juicy, and so easy to cut & eat. The jus which was extra was so flavourful and the chunky thrice cooked chips were crispy & fluffy. Service was excellent, friendly but not intrusive so we were able to chat. Deserts were refreshing & delicious and the complementary mini cornets at the end of the meal could be a dessert offering I could have eaten a dish of them!

Had a beautiful tasting plaice, & husband had great french onion soup & steak. My dessert ferrero rocher dessert with chocolate sauce was geogous tasting & looked stunning. Staff friendly. Great service. Will definitely go there again, especially for the plaice & dessert.

Not quite sure what all the hype is about. The food was expensive for what it was, the server reached across my wife twice to serve my food, which isn't the correct way to serve. We were offered a glass of water for the four of us, which they then charged £6 for the cheeky twonks. We were stuck in the conservatory where they'd turned the heating off and it wasn't particularly warm. It's fair to say we won't be back, I can however recommend the Cosy Club, far superior.

Both Jason and Dan both make you feel welcome and a local. The service is the best I have received world wide and the food will speak for it's self for being the best in chester. Best food and service in the city and county of cheshire. Best to finish your night in barlounge for a few drinks.

Wow, took my wife here for her birthday and had a fantastic evening. Everything was great, from the cocktails to the steaks, and they treated us like family. Can't recommend this place highly enough. First class.

Wow. What a wonderful place to have dinner. The place was buzzing on a Thursday evening upstairs on the enclosed terrace. The waiters were very good and the steaks, sides and wine were exceptional. The whole evening was delightful and entertaining. Many thanks to the chef who went out of his way to send us out into the night with full stomachs and big smiles on our faces.

Very disappointed from last night experience. I’m a steak lover and eat steak at least once a week and tried different varieties of steaks. We ordered 2 USDA prime steak 14oz each which was £108 in total. The steak was absolutely basic with zero taste. This steak should cost maximum £25-£30. Stop overcharging the customers and have some respect for people who come and eat there. How about your staff try the steaks once before serving it?!

I bought the Sunday lunch (for two) for my friend's birthday. He and his wife went today and called me straight after, to express their thanks for the present and also for the wonderful food and service that they received. The staff went above and beyond what was expected. Thank you so very for providing such a lovely lunch.

We had pre-booked our evening meal. I had my 6 month old son and 2 year old daughter with us, and although it doesn't feel like a very kiddy place, they were very accommodating and had a high chair at the ready. There were also little things throughout the evening that made the experience for my daughter very pleasant such as bringing some tomato sauce and a small plate to share some of my chips. The food from starters to desserts was exceptional. I had the cheese soufflé and it was delicious, my 6 month old son also approved. For main i had the herb and truffle chicken and can honestly say it's the best chicken I have ever had. My husband has the sirloin which he said was cooked to perfection. The French onion soup lived up to its reputation and also the steak tartar. The little touches really made the experience wonderful, such as, turning the coke bottle towards the customer so they know what it is, never having an empty glass and the fact you were just left to eat your meal with no rushing. Great food and a great evening had by all. I would also like to add that there are no pictures attached with my review only for the sheer fact that we just sat, ate and enjoyed. The food will be remembered, no pictures required!

Had an early table booked 5.15 we expected to be given a 2hrs window ? Not at all ….the staff were awsowm were not rushed and the food was fantastic …😊

The food and drinks here are incredible and never fail to amaze! The staff are wonderful and always go the extra mile for the customers, Shaun (manager) is incredible and helped when we had a slight query. They are a fantastic team that work really hard and the experience there is always amazing.

Loved it, as good as reviews. Not a massively extensive menu, if you were looking for variation. Absolutely ideal for us, if you like a perfectly cooked steak or fish 🐟 and good decent glass of wine, 100% will go back! Nice friendly staff 👌 👍

Clearly based on personal experience. Apparently this portion cost £105 basically that's what they charge us just for steak. Prices not matching with menu. We ordered ribeye steak and sashi fillet. For little piece of ribeye £60🤣 on menue you can't even see prices like that. So heads up people, my end up with bad experience like us.

Had the most amazing steak at grill upstairs it was, a birthday celebration and staff were fantastic I woukd definatly go here again the chef did a fantastic job on our meal highly recommend it

It was my Husbands birthday last weekend and we had originally booked a table somewhere else. We had cancelled as reviews were not great and popped into Upstairs at the grill last min in the hope the had a table. We were greeted by the lovely staff who fitted us in that evening. I mentioned my hubbys birthday and could we have a nice table. We arrived later that evening and honestly could not ask for more. Friendly staff who go above and beyond, a little birthday surprise!! Food was one of the nicest steaks we have ever had….cooked to perfection….. and the haggis fritters (that was recommended) were amazing!!! From start to finish it could not of been a more perfect evening. Very professional and felt so welcoming from the off! We come to Chester quite a lot as a treat and this is definitely our new place to eat!!! Thanks so much for the experience!! We will be back soon 😊

One of the first restaurants recommended to us when moving to the area, and what a restaurant. Loved the decor, the welcoming was warm and pleasant. The menu just right and what you want, though we found the food hit and miss for seasoning (which is personal preference) however when something is over-seasoned, not much can be done. Will be revisiting regular as this was a busy time. We were also left alone quite some time after mains were cleared and we wanted to get on with our night. I'm more than sure it's just a hiccup though!

We visited here a couple for a Romantic meal and couldn’t have asked for any better. Food was amazing. The service by the staff was second to none. Explained all the various cuts of meat they did and explained which drinks to choose. Great service all round and the restaurant itself is stunning: right in the heart of Chester with decoration to suit the style do the building. All round excellent and would happily visit again.

Best steaks in Chester, brilliant service and cosy friendly atmosphere. We tried a fair few things fries were amazing as we're the haggis bites triple cooked chips are brilliant and steaks were all perfectly cooked, deserts were really good too. Highly recommend and we will be back again at some point

This place just keeps getting better and better, which I didn’t think was possible. We enjoy eating out regularly but this is the best steak I have enjoyed anywhere. Service is always good and It’s just a great place to chill.

While the welcoming atmosphere and attentive service staff created a pleasant dining environment, the meal itself fell short of expectations. The ribeye steak, a cut typically known for its rich marbling and tenderness, arrived chewy and lacking the buttery texture this premium cut promises. It was stringy potentially suggesting lower-grade beef. For a steakhouse positioning itself in the upscale market, the execution of their steaks was disappointing compared to establishments that properly balance quality ingredients with precise preparation techniques.

Was a walk-in after strolling around the centre; luckily there was a space as the food was absolutely fantastic and the service was just as good. Very competitively priced and the quality of produce and service means it's definitely value for money. If I lived closer I'd definitely be a regular!

This place has the most delicious ribs on the grill! I love this place and I come here every weekend with my friends, I have never been let down by the taste or the service yet

Went for a meal here as I had a voucher to use. We decided to go on a Sunday (purely for the roast dinner!) and it did not disappoint. Staff were friendly and attentive, decor was lovely. Food was outstanding (the roast beef was so tender and delicious) and drinks menu was varied. Am sure we will be back soon.

Had steak and fries. The steak was VG it into slices for some reason. It was cooked with a peppercorn sauce which completely overpowered any flavour from the meat. We had to wait ages for the first course and a further long wait for the desert. At least 4 other patrons came in after us and left before we had our dessert. I do not understand why we had to wait for so long

A christmas meal for my wife and I. A place we've wanted to visit for a while, and was fortunate enough to be gifted a voucher. The place is a little pretentious, certainly didn't feel comfortable there. One family were very loud, seemingly unaware they were telling the whole restaurant about their skiing adventures! But I think the venue attracts those types. Food was mediocre. My wife had the prawn cocktail as a starter, which was served in an ice bowl, but was warm. Which left her wondering should it be served hot or cold?! At £16 for a prawn cocktail you'd expect high-end, fine dining standards. Sadly, it wasn't. For mains, I had the tuna, which was nice. Ordered confit carrot as a side, to be told they didn't have any!! At 6pm on Saturday before Christmas, they'd run out of carrot.....how and why? So had red cabbage instead, which was too sweet and overly spiced. Triple cooked chips were too solid in the centre, clearly too big, so inside was never going to cook properly. My wife had the chicken, which came with a gloopy sauce and coal tuile, which actually tasted of coal! Chicken was cooked well, but skin needed to be crispy. Overall, we're not sure how they justify prices charged, as the food was nothing special. Not a place for us.

Lovely evening celebrating with our daughter, just received her doctorate and newly pregnant- double celebration. She and her partner have wanted to go here for a while. Dinner was delicious but the service was what stood out. Dan, our waiter, was exceptional.

We visited Chester and thought we had to visit this restaurant. From being greeted at the reception, to fine dining and drinking exclusive cognac. Josh was a pleasure to be served by. Had a beautiful meal as part of a works-do. So friendly and welcoming from the moment we walked in. I have some allergies and it can be embarrassing when in large groups. The waiter did such a good job at accommodating for my dietary requirements in a discreet manner, and gave great advice for each course. Highly recommend 10/10. Thank you

When I first moved here - about 7 years ago, this place was dark and dingy, however now since the make over it really is exceptional. Lovey staff, nice tempo, no rushing. Just great. We had most of the menu, and would highly highly recommend ordering all the sides! And especially the French onion soup - the depth of flavour….🧅 If you can - ask to be on the terrace.

Well what can we say?! Absolutely fantastic! We booked for my husbands birthday along with his brother and sister in law. From the moment we arrived we were exceptionally well looked after. The bar service was excellent and the waiter looked after us, making menu recommendations and wine recommendations. He then explained and showed us the speciality steaks. Once in the restaurant the staff were attentive and friendly. We loved the little extra details like showing us the knife collection. Between us we ordered scallop starter and cheese soufflé. They were both amazing dishes and so pretty. The scallop Thermidor was divine. Next up we had 2 rib eye steaks and the special tomahawk steak, as well as a tuna. Ordered with various sides and sauces. Every mouthful was amazing. We were blown away and so happy we had made the choice to eat here on this special occasion. Thank you to each and every staff member who make it so wonderful. Absolute stars!

We went for the Sunday roast. All I can say is wow!! It was brilliant, I loved all the sides, full of flavour! Lovely location, the service was great they were very amenable. Lush christmas decor made it feel festive and cosy! We had the cauliflower cheese ans dirty mash, both were very tasty! Defo will be coming again!

Came here to meet with a supplier. Servers were friendly and polite. Food was good and selection of drinks was probably better than similar places nearby. All in all, a nice place

Had a truly wonderful evening last night. Food was fantastic, cocktails delicious and perfectly made, extensive wine list which was thoroughly explained, knowledgeable and friendly staff (love the choice of steak knives). I am a coeliac, so eating out can be problematic and limiting but I am very pleased to say that I was well catered for- especially being able to eat the yummy salt & vinegar onion rings and chicken salt chips. Finally a big shout out to Jack and Dan - staff who are definitely worth their weight in gold. Thank you all for a delicious and memorable visit.

Just Wow!! Ok so our table wasn’t ready for us when we arrived at 9pm, BUT we were taken to the bar, offered a complimentary drink, and spent the time chatting to the lovey bar staff. We were seated a little after 9.30 and we chose the prawn cocktail and onion soup to start – both were delicious, carefully prepared, and thoughtfully presented. We both opted for steak for our main. Mine was a rare fillet and my husband chose a medium rare sirloin. My fillet was amazing!! It was incredibly tender, and well-seasoned – my husband scarfed his down and declared it lovely too. The sides we chose included a red cabbage dish (have begged for the recipe!) along with a rocket and pear salad and chunky chips. All perfectly cooked and insanely delicious! The staff were wonderful, attentive, friendly, and efficient – we were perfectly looked after during our time. We live around a 2-hour drive from Chester, so it’s not going to be a regular haunt for us – but people of Chester – I envy you!! What a gem of a place!!

Cute place with friendly, attentive staff. But my steak was WAY too salty. All I could taste was salt. It amazes me how a chef who works at this level can ruin something as simple as a steak. 🤷‍♂️

From start to finish, this was an absolute delight. The steak was cooked to perfection. The service was equally remarkable. Attentive without being intrusive, the staff went above and beyond. exceptional food. the service was perfect from all the staff. charming place tastefully decorated with the most beautiful art deco chandelier at the entrance. 3 course for 2 adults and they even catered for our infant child with his own small dish. can not recommend enough. Also their set deal for 2 or 3 courses was good value

Really warm welcome, staff are very attentive. The food is excellent, if you're in Chester and want great food come here.

Absolutely brilliant venue and properly decent and attentive staff. Not only was I complemented on my tan shoes and jacket on arrival - I was also served the house cocktails which was a peachy delight! Food was fantastic and the meat....well.... Clean plates. Thanks again, delightful evening sat at the bar.

Beautiful venue! Very kind staff, welcoming place, exceptional dishes and drinks! Bonus point also for keeping sanitary napkins in the girls' bathrooms in case of need. They made my last evening in Chester really special! Thank you!

The food takes a long time, I asked for bread to accompany it and they told me there wasn't any. I asked for the quickest starter to mitigate my hunger, and it arrived after the main courses. The meat was excellent, but it was lukewarm.

After my wife ran the Chester marathon, we visited for a mid-afternoon Sunday lunch, which turned out to be one of the best we have ever had. Everything was perfect. The atmosphere was lovely, the food was superb, and staff very attentive. We will very likely return.

The service was excellent, such friendly staff. Went for a friends birthday meal. They kindly gave my friend a birthday card and a cocktail on the house. The food was excellent, cooked to a high standard and the place itself was beautiful.
