I’m not normally a “reviewer” but felt the need to write one. Excellent food, service and ambience. Lovely place, very nice people. Highly recommended. We’ll be back.

It was my Husbands birthday last weekend and we had originally booked a table somewhere else. We had cancelled as reviews were not great and popped into Upstairs at the grill last min in the hope the had a table. We were greeted by the lovely staff who fitted us in that evening. I mentioned my hubbys birthday and could we have a nice table. We arrived later that evening and honestly could not ask for more. Friendly staff who go above and beyond, a little birthday surprise!! Food was one of the nicest steaks we have ever had….cooked to perfection….. and the haggis fritters (that was recommended) were amazing!!! From start to finish it could not of been a more perfect evening. Very professional and felt so welcoming from the off! We come to Chester quite a lot as a treat and this is definitely our new place to eat!!! Thanks so much for the experience!! We will be back soon 😊

We visited here a couple for a Romantic meal and couldn’t have asked for any better. Food was amazing. The service by the staff was second to none. Explained all the various cuts of meat they did and explained which drinks to choose. Great service all round and the restaurant itself is stunning: right in the heart of Chester with decoration to suit the style do the building. All round excellent and would happily visit again.

One of the first restaurants recommended to us when moving to the area, and what a restaurant. Loved the decor, the welcoming was warm and pleasant. The menu just right and what you want, though we found the food hit and miss for seasoning (which is personal preference) however when something is over-seasoned, not much can be done. Will be revisiting regular as this was a busy time. We were also left alone quite some time after mains were cleared and we wanted to get on with our night. I'm more than sure it's just a hiccup though!

Best steaks in Chester, brilliant service and cosy friendly atmosphere. We tried a fair few things fries were amazing as we're the haggis bites triple cooked chips are brilliant and steaks were all perfectly cooked, deserts were really good too. Highly recommend and we will be back again at some point

This place just keeps getting better and better, which I didn’t think was possible. We enjoy eating out regularly but this is the best steak I have enjoyed anywhere. Service is always good and It’s just a great place to chill.

While the welcoming atmosphere and attentive service staff created a pleasant dining environment, the meal itself fell short of expectations. The ribeye steak, a cut typically known for its rich marbling and tenderness, arrived chewy and lacking the buttery texture this premium cut promises. It was stringy potentially suggesting lower-grade beef. For a steakhouse positioning itself in the upscale market, the execution of their steaks was disappointing compared to establishments that properly balance quality ingredients with precise preparation techniques.

Was a walk-in after strolling around the centre; luckily there was a space as the food was absolutely fantastic and the service was just as good. Very competitively priced and the quality of produce and service means it's definitely value for money. If I lived closer I'd definitely be a regular!

This place has the most delicious ribs on the grill! I love this place and I come here every weekend with my friends, I have never been let down by the taste or the service yet

Went for a meal here as I had a voucher to use. We decided to go on a Sunday (purely for the roast dinner!) and it did not disappoint. Staff were friendly and attentive, decor was lovely. Food was outstanding (the roast beef was so tender and delicious) and drinks menu was varied. Am sure we will be back soon.

Had steak and fries. The steak was VG it into slices for some reason. It was cooked with a peppercorn sauce which completely overpowered any flavour from the meat. We had to wait ages for the first course and a further long wait for the desert. At least 4 other patrons came in after us and left before we had our dessert. I do not understand why we had to wait for so long

A christmas meal for my wife and I. A place we've wanted to visit for a while, and was fortunate enough to be gifted a voucher. The place is a little pretentious, certainly didn't feel comfortable there. One family were very loud, seemingly unaware they were telling the whole restaurant about their skiing adventures! But I think the venue attracts those types. Food was mediocre. My wife had the prawn cocktail as a starter, which was served in an ice bowl, but was warm. Which left her wondering should it be served hot or cold?! At £16 for a prawn cocktail you'd expect high-end, fine dining standards. Sadly, it wasn't. For mains, I had the tuna, which was nice. Ordered confit carrot as a side, to be told they didn't have any!! At 6pm on Saturday before Christmas, they'd run out of carrot.....how and why? So had red cabbage instead, which was too sweet and overly spiced. Triple cooked chips were too solid in the centre, clearly too big, so inside was never going to cook properly. My wife had the chicken, which came with a gloopy sauce and coal tuile, which actually tasted of coal! Chicken was cooked well, but skin needed to be crispy. Overall, we're not sure how they justify prices charged, as the food was nothing special. Not a place for us.

Absolutely lovely. A fantastic Christmas meal with the family. The food and service were faultless. Nice touch was then getting us a table for drinks across the road at Bar Lounge. Little touches that mean everything.

Lovely evening celebrating with our daughter, just received her doctorate and newly pregnant- double celebration. She and her partner have wanted to go here for a while. Dinner was delicious but the service was what stood out. Dan, our waiter, was exceptional.

We visited Chester and thought we had to visit this restaurant. From being greeted at the reception, to fine dining and drinking exclusive cognac. Josh was a pleasure to be served by. Wonderful service and atmosphere. One of the best steakhouses I have been. The staff is very friendly and made sure we are comfortable. They elevated the level of celebration by offering champagne on the house. Must visit if in Chester.

Had a beautiful meal as part of a works-do. So friendly and welcoming from the moment we walked in. I have some allergies and it can be embarrassing when in large groups. The waiter did such a good job at accommodating for my dietary requirements in a discreet manner, and gave great advice for each course. Highly recommend 10/10. Thank you

When I first moved here - about 7 years ago, this place was dark and dingy, however now since the make over it really is exceptional. Lovey staff, nice tempo, no rushing. Just great. We had most of the menu, and would highly highly recommend ordering all the sides! And especially the French onion soup - the depth of flavour….🧅 If you can - ask to be on the terrace.

Well what can we say?! Absolutely fantastic! We booked for my husbands birthday along with his brother and sister in law. From the moment we arrived we were exceptionally well looked after. The bar service was excellent and the waiter looked after us, making menu recommendations and wine recommendations. He then explained and showed us the speciality steaks. Once in the restaurant the staff were attentive and friendly. We loved the little extra details like showing us the knife collection. Between us we ordered scallop starter and cheese soufflé. They were both amazing dishes and so pretty. The scallop Thermidor was divine. Next up we had 2 rib eye steaks and the special tomahawk steak, as well as a tuna. Ordered with various sides and sauces. Every mouthful was amazing. We were blown away and so happy we had made the choice to eat here on this special occasion. Thank you to each and every staff member who make it so wonderful. Absolute stars!

Came here to meet with a supplier. Servers were friendly and polite. Food was good and selection of drinks was probably better than similar places nearby. All in all, a nice place

We went for the Sunday roast. All I can say is wow!! It was brilliant, I loved all the sides, full of flavour! Lovely location, the service was great they were very amenable. Lush christmas decor made it feel festive and cosy! We had the cauliflower cheese ans dirty mash, both were very tasty! Defo will be coming again!

Had a truly wonderful evening last night. Food was fantastic, cocktails delicious and perfectly made, extensive wine list which was thoroughly explained, knowledgeable and friendly staff (love the choice of steak knives). I am a coeliac, so eating out can be problematic and limiting but I am very pleased to say that I was well catered for- especially being able to eat the yummy salt & vinegar onion rings and chicken salt chips. Finally a big shout out to Jack and Dan - staff who are definitely worth their weight in gold. Thank you all for a delicious and memorable visit.

Just Wow!! Ok so our table wasn’t ready for us when we arrived at 9pm, BUT we were taken to the bar, offered a complimentary drink, and spent the time chatting to the lovey bar staff. We were seated a little after 9.30 and we chose the prawn cocktail and onion soup to start – both were delicious, carefully prepared, and thoughtfully presented. We both opted for steak for our main. Mine was a rare fillet and my husband chose a medium rare sirloin. My fillet was amazing!! It was incredibly tender, and well-seasoned – my husband scarfed his down and declared it lovely too. The sides we chose included a red cabbage dish (have begged for the recipe!) along with a rocket and pear salad and chunky chips. All perfectly cooked and insanely delicious! The staff were wonderful, attentive, friendly, and efficient – we were perfectly looked after during our time. We live around a 2-hour drive from Chester, so it’s not going to be a regular haunt for us – but people of Chester – I envy you!! What a gem of a place!!

Excellent restaurant but the wine prices were expensive. We had the fillet steaks which were cooked to perfection. The service was very good with very friendly staff.

Cute place with friendly, attentive staff. But my steak was WAY too salty. All I could taste was salt. It amazes me how a chef who works at this level can ruin something as simple as a steak. 🤷‍♂️

From start to finish, this was an absolute delight. The steak was cooked to perfection. The service was equally remarkable. Attentive without being intrusive, the staff went above and beyond. They were knowledgeable about the menu and offered thoughtful recommendations! The ambiance was warm and inviting, perfectly complementing the outstanding food and service. Highly recommended!

exceptional food. the service was perfect from all the staff. charming place tastefully decorated with the most beautiful art deco chandelier at the entrance. 3 course for 2 adults and they even catered for our infant child with his own small dish. can not recommend enough. Also their set deal for 2 or 3 courses was good value

The food takes a long time, I asked for bread to accompany it and they told me there wasn't any. I asked for the quickest starter to mitigate my hunger, and it arrived after the main courses. The meat was excellent, but it was lukewarm.

After my wife ran the Chester marathon, we visited for a mid-afternoon Sunday lunch, which turned out to be one of the best we have ever had. Everything was perfect. The atmosphere was lovely, the food was superb, and staff very attentive. We will very likely return.

The service was excellent, such friendly staff. Went for a friends birthday meal. They kindly gave my friend a birthday card and a cocktail on the house. The food was excellent, cooked to a high standard and the place itself was beautiful.

Five of us had a long lunch here and couldn't fault a thing; Staff are very attentive and friendly, it's a great setting with views across Chester, the food was excellent and the beer/wine/port went down very well! Highly recommended

Food is really dissipointing, tastless and overpriced. We ordered Tomahawk steak, not worth the price. Mac and cheese was nice though. Innitial customer service was great, until we got seared, once we ordered food, we were not asked if everything was ok and if we needed anything. We were seated by the kitchen, very loud, can hear waitresses talking and cutlery smashing. Would not recommend.

I have lived in Chester all my life, but this was my first visit I found the staff to be very attentive and polite, yet not over the top like some high end places. The food was cooked perfectly and all of our group liked it very much. My only critique would be the £7 water. I didn't realise we had to pay for it as it's often complimentary in other places. Still we will know for next time.

Upstairs at the Grill 100 percent over delivered in every aspect. The staff are warm friendly and packed full of knowledge. Bringing the different cuts and giving an explanation of the steaks was a great touch. The steak tarta was incredible. Definitely a must have.

Although on arrival one is met at a reception desk before a grand staircase leading to the main upstairs dining g room, for lunch I was escorted to a smaller more sedate room on the ground floor to the left. There’s also a small lunch menu from which most diners, myself included chose slices of rump steak sizzling on a skillet in a butter sauce with a bucket of frites. Although according to the menu it comes in a 6oz size for £12.95 most diners accepted the offer of 8oz for £14.95 still quite a steal as a comparably sized rump from the main menu costs £18 entirely ungarnished. I supplemented this with a soufflé in a glorious Stilton cheese sauce, then a dessert called ‘golden delicious’ in which an apple contained a white chocolate parfait. This concluded a truly memorable meal.

Just back from our evening at UATG - our family had waited 3 months to get together due to various set backs and our choice of venue was very important as we don’t often get the chance to spend time with each other. The Grill was exceptional, from the moment we walked in to the second we left it was first class service. The food is incredible and the cocktails were made to perfection but what stood out the most to us was the service. Liv who served us, is a real gem! She has the perfect blend of being warm and friendly from the offset, attentive but gives you space and leaves you feeling like you want to recommend the place to everyone - thank you Liv x We can’t wait to return - this place never fails to impress.

Overall we had a really nice evening here, but, considering the price point, I would expect perfection, and it was not perfect. Positives: really interesting menu options. Although this is primarily a steak restaurant I was able to have something I'd never had before: a carrot tartare, and this was really interesting and tasty. The other starters of soup and the soufflé were also really good. The members of the party that did eat steak said overall it was great (partner said it was in his top 3 of all time). Mac and cheese and creamed spinach were delicious. Service was exceptional and really attentive, they talked through the whole menu with us and gave recommendations, and even brought out the cuts of meat we could have to assist in us choosing. Our water was kept topped up without asking. I liked the vibe of the venue with the little individual lamps on tables so you could control your own light levels. I also liked being taken to the separate bar area to have a drink while we ordered. Negatives: two of our party ordered steaks medium, and one medium rare. One of the medium steaks was the rarest we had, even rarer than the medium rare steak and it put her off eating it. Sure we could have complained but I would expect somewhere like this to get the steak cookery right? My cauliflower main was cooked fine on the edges but inside was too hard, I'm used to al dente and happy with that but it was borderline raw. Dauphinois potatoes needed more salt. Salt and vinegar onion rings needed more salt and vinegar- they just tasted like plain onion rings. The desserts were definitely style over substance. Supposedly brownie was meant to be in the chocolate galaxy but it was just a few dry crumbs in the bottom half.

Fantastic food and amazing value for lunch time. Very impressive wine list. Courteous and smooth service. We had a slight issue and was handled swiftly and professionally to our satisfaction. Highly recommended.

The staff was absolutely amazing, the waitress that took care of our table (I think her name was Liv) was very funny and made the whole experience even better. All of the staff knew a lot about the food and drinks, which helped with choosing what to order. The food itself was amazing, the portions seem small but they're very filling. I would 100% recommend Upstairs at the Grill, especially if you have something special to celebrate. It is pricey, but the staff makes you feel special and the food is worth it.

I booked in for the evening as it was my boyfriend’s birthday and we couldn’t put a single fault to anything!! We were seated on the terrace and had amazing service throughout, especially from Liv who looked after us amazingly all through our stay. The sun set and the personalised birthday card was a lovely subtle touch!! We are still thinking about the steak 😆 we can’t wait to return xxx

Everything about the place is outstanding... from the cocktails and the serve, and wow, the food is something special and presention is amazing! The best steak I've had and the tomato salad and haggis fritters were excellent sides.

This place was absolutely excellent. first rate on pretty much everything. The cheese soufflé started was a real stand out for us. as well as the salt and vinegar onion rings. quality and execution of the meat was beyond reproach. great service with a special mention to Sean the barman/server would 100% return

Picturesque, intimate steak restaurant in the heart of Chester. We all had the Sunday roast which was the best roast I’ve ever eaten. The interior design was pleasant and all staff were very friendly and professional. We ate in the upstairs private dining room for 7 which is ideal for larger groups. The sticky toffee for dessert was delicious, complimented by their Isles whiskey coffee.

I’ve dined with Saudi royalty. Never in my life have I had a steak as tender and delicious as the Delmonico. The sides, all wonderful. Service, unparalleled. Thanks for having me.

My wife and I went here for lunch on friday @ 1415hrs. We had Chateaubriand. Waited one hour for our main course even though the restaurant was not full. At end received our bill with 10% discretionary tip added! I asked them to remove this , as I do not like a restaurant to presume one will tip even though I usually do , think this is very cheeky! So they lost out on a £10 I was going to give them. Also too be honest the steak was nothing special even though it cost £80 for two persons. Overall , not worth the money . Would not go again and would not recommend it. Have eaten better steaks at far better establishments!

I booked dinner for my fiancé’s 30th birthday meal and can not be more glad that I did. The team were friendly, charismatic and attentive but not in an overpowering way, the food was all delicious and the decor and atmosphere was just right even on a Monday evening. We both had a really lovely time and will definitely be coming back.

My wife &i ate there on 25/08/24 for our wedding anniversary and the whole experience was a joy from the moment we arrived (early) we were greeted by a friendly smiling girl on the entrance and guided to to bar (as they were back to back that day) until our table was ready, we were promply served we ordered a bottle of wine and while we sat and waited our dinner order was taken, we were soon shown to our table, the food in this place is sublime as is the wine, i the service is impeccable, attentive & friendly without being too intrusive nothing is too much trouble, i must give a special mention to Dan (one of the mangers) for looking after us, I highly reccomend you go to this place, we will certainly be going back hopefully soon, keep up the good work guys. We visited on our mini-moon the day after our wedding. From the second we arrived, the staff made every effort to create a special occasion feel. throughout the evening, we were taken care of so well with so many congratulations and some lovely interactions with staff. We were also treated to complimentary cocktails and a desert. The food was, of course, absolutely sensational and a level above what’s available in the area. It didn’t end there either. After our food, we sat at the bar where we were given a super interesting talk on all thing Louis Tres. I want to give a specific mention to Julio, Elz, Liv and Sam for making it such a memorable evening. We will be back without hesitation and are hoping to come in for a special anniversary somewhere along the way and treat ourselves to a shot of Louis. Thank you all so much for the most wonderful of dining experiences.

Had an absolutely fabulous evening. I was celebrating my birthday & my daughters were treating me. The food was absolutely delicious & the service was on another level! Food was good but not special enough to warrant the price. Staff were attentive and professional. It was an enjoyable evening but didn’t meet the expectations the price tag gives.

We have visited here numerous times for special occasions and always had a fantastic meal & experience. We visited here today with our 9yo son for a roast dinner and as ever the whole meal and experience was impeccable. The service here is second to none, it really is the best restaurant in Chester! I always say it’s nice as a treat but for the value and level attention you get it really is worth it! Would highly recommend for a steak dinner or a roast!

Made a booking over the phone on Thursday 8th for Saturday 10th. Specifically asked for a table on the Terrace, taking my two daughters for a celebration of My youngest's Graduation. Arrived to be told the terrace was fully booked... Explained that I had spoken to a lady who had booked us as per our request on terrace. Left in the bar while someone went to see if they could fit us in.... They offered us a table in the little downstairs side room... More atmosphere in McDonald's than in that room. They then offered us the private dining room... which i think seated about 10.... After 20mins of waiting we decided to find an alternative restaurant. So disappointed after 3 people making the special journey.....

10/10 - Easily one of the nicest meals I’ve had! All 3 courses were absolutely fab! Staff are friendly, attentive and very knowledgable. I’d highly recommend to anyone!

Popped in for a drink at lunch while staying in Chester. Staff really friendly and welcoming. Very relaxed atmosphere so decided to eat there on the evening. Food was fantastic, husband is a coeliac but this wasn’t a problem, steak was amazing as were all the sides. Loved the bar. Highly recommend.

Had an amazing birthday lunch here last weekend. The steak was ridiculously good and they have an excellent drinks menu with some lovely cognacs. One of my favourite places in Chester! We ordered off the lunch menu and the food was absolutely delicious. Staff were so friendly and attentive. We sat upstairs on the rooftop terrace and it was just lovely. Will definitely be returning.

Exceptional. I came back to Upstairs at the Grill, 12 years after my first visit, as it was my 50th birthday, and I wanted something extra special. I am glad to say the standards have not dropped, everything about the evening was perfect, and amazingly, exceeded my already high expectations. Hopefully I won't leave it another 12 years before I am back.

Swordfish with chips and peas was somthing else !. Lovely building with Posh dining 🍽 room and a punk rock bathroom that would even make Gorden Ramsey rock out while using it services ! . Thank again and I will be back Gerard Galway , Ireland
