Umami Indian Kitchen in Birmingham

What a fabulous meal in a lovely restaurant with super friendly and hospitable staff! We were a table of 4, we shared vegetarian sharer plate, sheek kebabs and lamb chops. The pani chaat with tamarind sauce was exemplary. The chops were succulent with a delicious crust. Main courses were the best byriani I've eaten outside of India, black lentils and an amazing stuffed kulcha bread with chillies and cheese. I was greedy enough to order the trio of kulfi for dessert, sublime. We will definitely return, a gold star experience!

Umami Indian Kitchen Without a doubt, 10 out of 10! The food was incredible and clearly crafted with care. The service was top-notch with an engaging team, attentive and truly focused on making the dining experience enjoyable. Nice to see a varied menu, offering a blend of Indian-English, Eastern Indian, and Royal kitchen options. It gave us an opportunity to meet something very different from any Indian restaurant we have been to in the Black Country!! From start to finish, it was a fantastic experience, and I can’t recommend it enough!

Just had Chicken Madras and a Peshwari naan here as I'd been drinking all day and wasn't super hungry. The curry was delicions and spice level was perfect. The staff were friendly and smiley the whole time which definitely added to the experience too!

Consistency is key in dining out or the takeaway game. These guys (and girls) absolutely deliver every time. I recently had takeout for a party of 7 Was brilliant. During the Euros they made us a bespoke takeout platter for 12 !! It lasted all of 8minutes....not a crumb left! And dining in recently with my partner ...the menu is good and varied, staff friendly and knowledgeable. A true Harborne Institution.

The team here smash it. We visit every week and the owner and staff are second to none. The food and drink are amazing and I'd definitely recommend the Salmon starter. Another level

We had an amazing spur-of-the-moment meal at Umami this evening - we dropped in on our way home and we were made to feel so welcome we stayed all evening. The food was DELICIOUS - we ordered from the summer specials, and the flavours were superb, especially the red mullet. The service was friendly and quick and everything we ate had been made with care and attention. This is really a special place, as tasty as Dishoom but without the price tag.

Absolutely love Umami! I have been here twice and have always thoroughly enjoyed the good, ambiance, service and cocktails. I would highly recommend, already looking forward to my next visit.

We had a really lovely meal here last night. We live quite a distance away, so it was great to be back here after a long while, and my husband and I were very happy to see that nothing had changed. The food was exceptional, and the service was brilliant. Hoq and the others made us feel really welcome, and we were really well catered for. We had the Railway curry and it was superb as was our starter,rice and naan. We would thoroughly recommend a visit here.

I visited Umami with my partner and daugher in june 2024. The atmosphere was terrible and uncomfortable. The management treatment of staff was appalling, we observed verbal abuse towards waiters, who appeared terrified. Our table was surrounded by 2 waiters for the entire evening, making us feel uncomfortable. The food was was bland, with one dish, the paneer overly sweet, we couldn't eat it. I'm an Indian women and know how indian food should taste like. What they served at Umami was tastless and not quality food. Don't bother asking for a cocktail, because they don't know how to make them. My daughter had previously eaten there and had a the same experience, but we thought that might have been a one off incident, clearly not. I will never eat there again and will tell everyone to avoid going there, because how there treat they staff, like dirt and the standard of the food was not that great. Over priced for poir food. I'll say away and go somewhere else.x I

We had a really marvellous takeaway from Umami last night. In contrast to most other takeaways near by, theyd taken the utmost care with the lamb meat which was well trimmed, not fatty and generously added. The sauces were delicious and the breads arrived in top form, not soggy as is often the case. There were also a good variety of dips to go with the poppadoms which were all delicious. The only thing I would tweak is that - although I eat a lot of chilli, their default heat levels were a notch higher than my ideal. Usually takeaways are a touch mild for me, so that was a surprise. It in no way took away from my enjoyment if the best takeaway in a very long time. Thanks guys!

Tried to Order a takeaway. Man who answered the phone was rude, I have eaten here and ordered takeaways before. Tried to charge me nearly £50 for a takeaway that was &35 two weeks ago. When I questioned him , he hung up, I called back and he said go away basically and said he was busy . Lovely food but really bad experience tonight. Lost my custom

Visited here with a few friends for dinner. The service was so fast and attentive. Food was very tasty and the chef was accommodating to customise most dishes to meet our requirements. Presentation was also really good. Would definitely recommend this place to others and would come again!

What a lovely surprise find! It’s a gem. The food was exceptional, the service excellence. The greetings we received on arrival from Hom was warm, welcoming and genuine, I just knew we were going to have a lovely time. I wished I lived closer but it is worth driving to. This is a great restaurant, the staff were extremely attentive and polite ( I have coeliac) so I needed a gluten free opinion. A member of staff went through the menu and told me exactly which foods were gluten free. The food were delicious - I would definitely be going back.

Excellent service & venue. The food was good, however I would've preferred stronger, more authentic flavours, especially the Nihari gosht. However that's probably down to the regular clientele preferring toned-down versions. In hindsight I should've requested a more authentic version. Dessert was nice, though I expected the gulab jamun to be baked into the cheesecake rather than just slices placed on top. The service was excellent with a very personal touch. They are definitely passionate about food and the daily specials are definitely something to try.

The service provided by Mizzie (apologies if mis-spelt!) and his team has been excellent. They catered a party for us and from start to finish were really helpful. We went to the restaurant to discuss the order and ended up having a superb meal there. Beautiful flavours and all well presented. The catered meal was just as good. Starters and mains all to a high standard. The equipment for keeping the food hot made a huge difference and was way beyond our domestic capability. All of the guests loved the food, the portion sizes were very generous and everyone left completely satisfied. Standouts were the chilli paneer and the Railway lamb curry. So whether you are dining at the restaurant or splashing out for a party, then Umami comes highly recommended by us.

Umami catered for my party of 30 people. They were helpful, friendly and communicative in making this happen, and the food was amazing and well priced. There were delicious vegan as well as meat options, and all my guests commented on how delicious the food was. I can’t wait to return and try more dishes. I don’t think we got any photos because we were too busy enjoying it!

A group of 4 of us, service here is great. We came here for a birthday celebration. Nice decor and we would recommend and come again. Chicken 65 and the chili prawns were my favorite dish. Lamb shank curry is also up there. However all of the food had been lovely either way. We were seated quite early and usually u do have to vacate the table within 1 hour and 30 minutes, however the service had been great and they didn't mind us pushing that time by 2 hours though the place got pretty busy. Great for groups of people and couples.

Well, it’s not an kid friendly restaurant. Bit surprised the way it’s being communicated to us. Felt discriminated in this place and the food is bland itself. Response to the comments: Its not related to dessert option which you have served.

These folks really take pride in their craft. Great service, drinks are brilliant with twists on classics and the food is off the chart. Packed with flavour and quality ingredients. Embarrassed I've lived near by for ten years and this is my first visit, I'll be back soon for sure.

The Umami team are 5*. Attentive service, excellent food (we recommend the Red Mullet off the specials menu) and top quality drinks. Be sure to pop in, their cocktail menu is fantastic - something for everyone. We will definitely be back.

Came to Umami for the first time for my friends 40th birthday They decorated the table for us and did a fantastic job. Choice of food on the menu is immense. The food was amazing and the service was exceptional. The staff are well dressed, very attentive and polite. Highly recommend Umami to anyone, you won't be disappointed! Can't wait to go back!

We visiting this restaurant regularly and coming every time with our friends and guests. We can’t not express enough our feelings about the experience we receive, from the moment we enter and greeted by the amazing staff and the owner Hoq, to the great table set up and the whole ambiance m. The menu and the food is so well presented, the taste is no words to express, perfectly balanced and tasty. My wife don't eat much spice and requested specifically mild and was amazing, we wipe out our plates. Our daughter with her friend managed to sneak in to the kitchen with the permission from the manager and said a big tank you to the cheff as well, for the amazing food. We did order for starter seafood plater and veg one, for main chicken corma and lamb briany, makhani and some other dishes everything was amazing.We had very good selection of wine Shiraz, to match our food. For dessert we received recommended by the staff mixture of ice cream’s for the kids, wow all plates empty. A bit than you to all the team, chefs and the owner Hoq. We will definitely continue to visiting this restaurant and recommending to our friends.

Food was a let down. Meen kozhambu was inauthentic ( resembled a dry fish stranded on a mound of rice with a separate poorly complimenting tasteless sauce) but chef apologised and replaced it with a Pondicherry style chicken dish. The paneer lababdar tasted too sweet like dessert. Lamb was acceptable. Overall very disappointed.

A mid-week dinner. The service is exemplary with staff remembering us from a previous visit. The food is wonderful. Full of flavour and with generous portions - too much for me really and I have an excellent appetite. We felt welcome and really enjoyed ourselves (and our dinner).

My husband took me here 2 days ago for my birthday, I should’ve listened to him as this restaurant was my choice not his!! We ordered a bottle of the house Champagne to which they presented us with a £5 bottle of Prosecco from lidl/asda. We refused and had to wait 10 mins before anyone came over to us! We were then offered a bottle for £90 which wasn’t even on the wine list. We weren’t even offered the £85 bottle of Veuve Clicquot which was the next bottle on the list. We were told if we wait 15 mins, he could pop out and get us the bottle we asked for!!!! We refused. Waited 20 mins all in all before we had our drinks which weren’t worth the wait. Lamb chop starter were fatty and greasy, husbands scallops were so small and obviously frozen, worst he’s ever had and my main chicken jelfrezi was swimming in Gee, chicken was like rubber and tasted like a ready meal. To top it all off, one of the waiters needed a little deodorant, not what you want to be smelling when dining out!! We were really disappointed and will never eat here again or recommend it. Neither of us wanted to create a scene as it was my birthday so we just made the best of a bad situation but we should’ve just left from the start and definitely shouldn’t have paid.

Home delivery, chicken madras, garlic and coriander naan, 2 chapatti, 2 sheik kebab and other stuff. Chicken madras no heat and swimming in ghee,naan was a chapatti with coriander and no garlic, both chapatti and naan tough, ate some, £25 now in the bin. All cold when received, don't bother

It was quite disheartening, in fact insulting to be asked to get up and leave this restaurant after being seated indoors by their staff. Never have I been turned back by restaurant staff because i wanted to eat dessert when the staff preferred that we have a three course meal instead.

Appalling service! My family - three of us were asked to leave after being seated as we asked for desserts - and were told it's their policy to not serve unless people consume alcoholic beverages or have a three course menu.

I order food online .the naan was hard and some dust while eating them.The kofta was too sweet.The quantity was less for the price. Not ordering again as very average food quality n quantity.

Just enjoyed a superb meal. We had Pani Puri & Sheek Kabab starters followed by Paneer Lababdor and chicken makhani. All dishes were really good, but the chicken was the best “butter chicken” I have ever eaten. Really pleased they have continued to fill the dishes with plenty of meat and paneer. Price is still fair. Umami may not match Dishoom for decor, but the food is just as good.

Absolutely amazing food, and so flavoursome, the pilua rice is the best I have ever tasted (if not the best) spice is infused with the food and tastes amazing! Very highly recommended!

Wow at last found a beautiful Indian restaurant in Birmingham!! Having been recently disappointed with so many bad ones in Birmingham this one surely made up for it !! Excellent food beautifully spiced and fresh. My wife and I loved it being Indian ourselves. Nice decor and great beer on Tap. Chef and staff were very friendly. Overall 11/10

Our first time eating at Umami, it will definitely not be the last - we really enjoyed the food, which was presented so well, as well as the non-alcoholic cocktails. The staff are friendly and for the quality of the food and service the prices are very reasonable.

Birmingham is replete with excellent restaurants to eat curry. This one is way up there in our view. The atmosphere is excellent the service attentive but not overly so. You are given plenty of time between courses to relax and chat. The food is marvellous....

A bank-holiday Friday with family/friends. The place was really, quiet. I have no idea why as we had an excellent time. The service was splendid, the food very good and the portions large. Wine prices are reasonable and the wine quality is fine. Only comment...

We went because they were offering a set menu for under £20 a head. The food was delicious, and great service and good portions… but the main menu is on the expensive side. But it’s a local restaurant for us and we can walk there.

It was our first time at umami we had been to different restaurants and I am glad we went the food was beautiful and the staff went above and beyond to make you were looked after we plan on going again soon

The best Indian restaurant in Harborne and possibly Birmingham. The food is authentic but feels a la carte and the service is excellent. The staff are friendly and professional but also really knowledgeable on what they are offering. Going back a 2nd time within 2 weeks.

Been to Umami a handful of times now and cannot fault this place at all. Staff are all super friendly and attentive, cocktail bar is well stocked with all different types of alcohol, the food is absolutely delicious, it always has a great atmosphere irrelevant if it's a weekday/weekend. Plenty of different options for food(meat, veg, fish) and definitely not your just your typical Indian takeaway. Soft shelled crab, salmon, scallops even lobster, street food starter options, different mains from all different regions of India. All of them tasty, full of flavour and delicious, the lamb dishes are my go too as the meat is always so tender! A true hidden gem in Harborne.
