Ate here whilst staying the night. The menu was ok but would have liked to see some more regional dishes like Cullen Skink and Haggis. I had the haddock and chips and sticky toffee pudding for desert. It was all fine although the plate for the main was very small and there was too much coleslaw for my liking. The pudding was also supposed to come with cream or ice cream and they never asked me which I wanted. It came with neither, just lots of glacé cherries for some reason!!

Because Goblin Ha is now closed tried this for a drink and a sandwich. The decor is shall we say quaint, like stepping back in time to the fifties. No one else there in the dining room or the lounge, wonder why ? Asked for one ham and cheese and one ham, one ham and cheese and one cheese arrived. When one picked up the sandwiches all the grated cheese fell out, and no thought about the supply of cutlery. Will not return

Absolutely delicious food. Really tasty and well presented. Good choice on menu without being over facing. I would say that the quality exceeds the term ‘pub food’. Definitely restaurant standard. Not just run of the mill. Our waitress was lovely. Friendly and attentive without being over the top and false. Efficient service and very reasonable cost too.

4 of us stayed for one night on a Motorcycle Trip and every part of our stay was fantastic. Check in was excellent, particularly the detail and choice for the next days breakfast order. We had drinks in the warm and cosy bar before dinner and they had 2 excellent local craft beers on draft, which were top notch and kept really well. We went for the Pizza deal for Dinner.....now I'm a massive fan of Pizza and a bit of a connoisseur and their Pizzas were really, really good! Beds were comfortable, room spotlessly clean, the shower was a bit weak, but it didn't spoil the stay Breakfast was unbelievably good, well cooked, good quality, plenty of choice and as much as you wanted....but the absolute best part of our stay, was first class service. Thoroughly recommended

We stayed here for 3 nights and the service we experienced was second to none. The place is beautiful with Tartan carpets and Scottish Decor. Beautifully well kept and spotlessly clean. We loved our room and housekeeping made sure we were well stocked with tea, coffee and delicious cookies. We had clean towels everyday and were asked everyday by housekeeping if we needed anything. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The breakfast was delicious every morning and we were served by a lovely lady who was very attentive. We had an evening meal twice in the 3 days we stayed. The quality and standard of the food was perfect. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to returning.

We ate a late lunch here after a walk around the Yester area. We were made very welcome. The menu had a range of traditional pub items and the food was freshly made. The fish was perfectly cooked and the pie was full of tender beef in a rich gravy. Portions are hearty and good value. The Covid related precautions were faultless. A one way system, plenty of sanitiser and contact details taken. All very clean.

My family is like a ravenous horde of delinquent gremlins and so we tend to avoid most places of civilisation when it comes to brunch. So it was with great trepidation that me and my demonic clan settled at our table. So why five stars? First off the waitress was very nice and put me at my ease. Many a place dont like families with small children but here I didnt get that vibe and that helped me relax, Secondly the food was great and the childrens menu was just what we needed - simple, well priced and aimed at actual children. Far too often childrens menus are either sugar horrors or else just "mini" versions of the adult menu that the kids will just ignore. Finally the decor and layout was great. Finally... my nerves. Often we have gone for lunch at a place and I have left grumpy or despondent because the children have not liked it and so I havent liked it. Here the children really liked the food and the juice and the dessert and the bathroom was clean and we left HAPPY so for that alone this place gets five points. Because I liked the food and I thought the menu was good, I also recommend this place.

The hotel was nice, clean and tidy and the staff helpful. I stayed for one night. The food was nice, simple pub grub. I would say the room was a little cramped with more furniture than necessary and the bathroom door opened funny making it hard to squeeze in. The downside was that I needed to be up early and have breakfast around 7.30am but on a Saturday they don’t serve until 8am. Would stay again but wouldn’t be a first choice.

I recently stayed at the Tweedale Hotel for a number of nights.Following a long journey, I was really looking forward to an early dinner and some rest and relaxation ahead of visiting friends the following day. However, I was really disappointed with the food that was served that evening, and based upon previous visits, felt that the quality of the food had deteriorated somewhat. The chipped potatoes were hard and had obviously been cooked from frozen, the vegetables had been frozen and were watery, and the filling in the steak and ale pie, for some reason was over powered by an unnecessary amount of pungent herbs. The breakfast on the other hand was second to none, plentiful, freshly cooked, and absolutely delicious !! What a difference a chef made !!However, aside from the above, a huge “thanks” to all the staff who made my stay a really enjoyable experience !!

Our monthly walk, this time round the Yester estate and our subsequent lunch in The Tweeddale Hotel in Gifford, inadvertently became a somewhat unfortunate Beatles tribute.Changes in access as a result of new estate ownership resulted in our Yesterday becoming a Magical Mystery Tour ending up Here, There and Everywhere. On wishing to Get Back for lunch, we took a short cut, there was a Twist and Shout from The Fool on the Hill, cries of Help and I'm Falling, Yes, I Am Falling as he went down the slope Helter Skelter followed by a plaintive I'm Down...After first aid and optimistic assurances of It's Getting Better and I Feel Fine from our injured companion, it was A Long And Winding Road but With A Little Help From My Friends we were able to Carry That Weight of our stoical Day Tripper to make our eventual return to Gifford and our meal...I Should Have Known Better but I was hoping for a lunch which would Please Please Me. Unfortunately it matched the disappointing levels of the rest of the excursion. The food was of variable but perhaps reasonable quality if it had been served at the right temperature but, whether it was due to difficulties in the kitchen or inadequate levels of service, it was disappointing to find that all our dishes did Come Together at one time for our party of seven arriving lukewarm at table. My mash for just one example. Even our coffee was made individually, held on the counter and not served until the end of the complete process by which time the contents of half the cups were cold. I know that Money Can't Buy Me Love but I did hope that the meal, at least, would enable me to say about the day that it's Getting Better, but couldn't. Happiness Is A Warm Gun, the same applies to food on a late autumn day...We Let It Be and for some reason gave a rock star level of tip!The End...

Ate here on a quiet night out working in Haddington. Only two places in the Gifford village to eat. I decided to give this a go as my hotel was too busy and I did not want to wait too long for my food. I chose the Chicken Curry , would not be my usual choice as I would not normally order a curry anywhere but an Indians but I had the curry itch. It was very tasty, service was good and the Tennents was cold. They even had the footy on in the bar when I had finished my meal. Well pleased.

On a monthly basis we try to visit different restaurants in East Lothian, this time it was my choice, I opt for the Tweeddale Arms as it is some time since I was last there, I have to say I was disappointed overall, the service at both the bar and table was lacking in all quarters, the attention span of the waitress was non-existent and poor. I was asked 3 times what drinks I wished at the bar on a one to one and when serving there was a lack of knowledge as to what was being delivered. Really poor.

The mother-in-law's birthday has to be carefully planned and we checked out several venues around East Lothian before settling on the Tweeddale Arms Hotel Restaurant. Five adults and three children (10 and 12 years) needed some thought and the location was ideal: a lovely drive from N Berwick, through gorgeous East Lothian countryside; a menu that offered fresh-made pizza, a choice of pasta as well as the usual restaurant fare; a large park with swings opposite; a relatively "safe" road to cross to get there; a nice walk around the Yester Estate for later. The Tweeddale Arms Restaurant did not disappoint in any way: the food was good; service was warm and friendly; portion sizes were large but the staff happily offered half portions. I was particularly touched by the efforts of the chef to cater for me (a vegan) who made a vegan pea and mint soup and had even bought in vegan cheese for my freshly made pizza. Eight of us dined for £130 (including two glasses of wine, four coffees and two puddings, two starters). I would advise that you phone the day before to make the chef aware of any dietary requirements but my example shows that they can do it! The venue was a pleasant, old country hotel. We had a large corner table and were left to finish our meal and chat while the children ran off their haddock and chips outside!

We were staying in the area therefore popped in for a quick beer in the early evening to The Tweeddale Arms (pub). We had been here some 7 or 8 years ago and thought it was grim however as time had moved on and competition is getting fiercer, we thought this place would have pulled its socks up. We can report that it absolutely hadn't. This establishment is set in the beautiful village of Gifford where you should expect to get a decent country pub. This pub is one of the most grim places I have been in, in a long, long time. It is literally like stepping back in time by around 30 years. It is bleak and unwelcoming with ripped seats and drab decor and greyhound racing on the TV. The toilets are pathetic, they are tiny and really old fashioned and the plastic cisterns are covered in cigarette burns. Left me feeling quite sickly after visiting them. We were in an out of this place quicker that you could say Tweeddale Arms as it was not a place you would want to linger. This place needs to get with the times. It needs investment and the owners/proprietors need to do some market research and start raising their game. Country pubs don't need to look scruffy, they should have a traditional, welcoming country feel with some charm and cosiness. You can't expect the public to part with hard earned money for such a poor offering. This place was neither welcoming, cosy or charming not, even traditional, it was actually quite depressing. We absolutely won't be back.

Thanks to owners Derek and Linda Nimmo for organising such a splendid event, and of course to Chef Michael for his scrumptious food. Valentine's Evening was lovely at the Tweeddale Arms Hotel. After our meal in the atmospheric Dining Room with its roaring open fire we were able to roll through to the Lounge Bar and be entertained by DDK's vocal talent. A great night was had by all. More people should be aware of this little gem of a hotel with its historic and traditional setting and their new chef who's bursting with talent and enthusiasm. We also spent last Hogmanay/New Year in the hotel and stayed over upstairs in the most delightful room with all the home comforts plus charming window seats where we could relax and gaze out over the Village Green while we recovered from the night before!. We count ourselves lucky to live near to the village of Gifford, and are often found enjoying the welcome, the constantly changing Real Ales, a great choice of alcohol free and low alcohol drinks for this designated driver, and of course the 'craic' in the Public Bar of an evening. My mum in law ( an ex butcher) proclaimed the steak pie " melt in the mouth" a massive accolade.and my husband had three courses, all excellent. Yes there should be a veggie option and the lighting was way too bright ( loose the chandeliers) but for flavour authenticity and value anyone not trying this place is missing a huge delight. Service was discreet and overall visit a delight.

The service was personal and friendly, but the food a bit bland. Standard fare: fish and chips and steak and ale pie. I found the sauce thin and the beef overcooked. It was, however, fairly priced and convenient after a long day's drive!

Had to stay locally and found this place quite randomly, I was prepared for the worst due to the very low price of the room. But I was pleasantly surprised by the dinner I had here, fresh carefully cooked salmon and vegetables in a lovely combination. Interested and polite staff, nice place I'll be back with my missus for sure. They could do , to do something with the hall light that shone in to my room. Otherwise all good.

After an incredibly busy week we took a drive out into the beautiful East Lothian countryside and stopped off in Gifford for lunch. We found the Tweeddale Arms Hotel during our wander around the village and to be honest we didn't expect much as we entered this small hotel from a bygone age looking for lunch. The menu was straightforward but I was tempted by seafood linguine and my other half liked the sound of the sea bass in a summer broth. When the dishes arrived we were bowled over, the sea bass was perfectly cooked and the broth light and fragrant, the seafood in my linguine was fresh, moist and succulent with just enough small pieces of smoked fish to flavour the creamy sauce perfectly. It's always a joy to find wonderfully cooked food in out of the way places and we're so glad we walked in off the street to the Tweeddale Arms. Thoroughly recommended - and the waitress was very helpful too!

Freshly cooked food of good quality. Ordered from the Bar Menu on both nights of our stay, as we had our dog with us and she was allowed in the Bar but not the dining room which was understandable.

I had not been here for a long time as the last lunch had been an embarrassment. I had taken along an old friend who is celiac and the chef struggled to suggest an option on the menu?? We finally both ordered an omelette only for them to be served on a cold plate by a chef wearing a dirty jumper ie no whites???. But as this visit was not my choice I went with indifference. New chef so options open!!!! I must say although the menu was very much the same as it had been 6 months ago the food could not be faulted. 5 of us all had main course and dessert. Although no dessert menu seemed to be available as the waitress just rolled of the options (just goes to show how long the same menu has been used).I now believe the new chef has updated the menu and added a few new options. Might be convinced to return if they can add a wee bit of atmosphere. it reminded us of a doctors waiting room. We were the only table in for lunch and the two waitresses( for 1 table of five) stood at the bar playing on computers and mobile phones. We were squashed onto a table for 4 when two tables could easily have been pushed together but I did get the impression that was not an option. As 4 of us had ordered fajitas combining two plated each we were a bit tight for space. With no help we emptied the extra cutlery, glasses, (artificial) flowers etc on to another table to give us room. Same to try and upgrade the restaurant and fail in the customer service.

We had been going to try the Tweeddale, having not been for many years, but the only veggie option on the menu was an omelette. That is most definitely not what I want for Sunday lunch, that's what I make when I can't be bothered to cook. Around 20 years and several owners ago, this restaurant had fabulous veggie options, it's just a shame that the current owners don't seem to be up to it. Will leave it another 10 years before trying again.

We had happy memories of the Tweeddale and its excellent food and today decided to take a trip down memory lane, but what a disappointment. The almost empty, Friday lunch time bar should have been a clue. Only one other table was occupied. Two of our party chose a shared platter starter, all deep fried, which was fine. One main meal of fish & chips, deep fried was also fine but it went downhill from there. The two breaded, grilled fish were served not only cold but raw! No food temperature thermometers used in this kitchen! When we complained to the waitress we were told 'one chef hasn't come in'. A steak pie replaced one breaded fish but I couldn't bear to try anything else after having a mouthful of cold, raw fish so decided to just have dessert. I chose the crannachan which was served as a tower on a soggy biscuit base but one spoonful was enough. It was a solid mass & tasted of nothing, not even a hint of whisky. We were given two free drinks & the steak pie was complimentary but my lunch today simply didn't happen. Will drive through Gifford in the future.

I visited this hotel today with my parents for lunch. As we ordered the table up from us were returning a plate to the kitchen as the liver was burnt, that should have told us what was to come! My mother and I ordered the breaded haddock, when it arrived the outside of the small very thin looking fish was red hot but the middle was frozen, not something you want to risk eating is half cooked frozen fish. We complained and had the plates taken away, I changed my order to steak pie n chips (who could get that wrong) mum asked for the sweet menu and fresh drinks. After waiting 15 minutes I had to go to the bar to ask for the drinks and the menu, the woman said sorry she had forgot and that she was working on her own today, she only had three tables to wait on, 8 people in total, not as is they were rushed. The steak pie was fine but the chips had water in them from the veg not being strained properly. The reason given for the poor food was that one of the cooks had not come into work today, which makes me think the cleaner was doing the cooking as no one with any food training would have sent out the dishes they did from the kitchen. There are much better places to eat who charge a lot less for properly cooked food, do not visit this one.

We had stayed in the Tweeddale Arms before and had found it quite pleasant. We popped in for lunch after a day in East Lothian and enjoyed the pork belly. The staff were very cheerful and welcoming, the decor is brightened by paintings from the local art group and over all it is a pleasant and understated sort of a place compared to the bustle of the Goblin Ha'. Also it would suit the diner on a tighter budget, if I remember rightly.

Visited the tweeddale arms for lunch and opted for the £6 lunch menu which my wife and I found good value. Lunch menu had plenty options - really what you'd expect in a Scottish pub. Service wasn't the quickest as there was only one waitress and a manager but as we were not in a hurry this was not an issue. We would visit the tweeddale arms again if we were in the area.Would recommend the steak pie and the crannichan

14/4/12 - Husband and I, who live within East Lothian, decided to pop into the Tweedale for lunch. The service was excellent. Husband's panini and my steak pie and trimmings arrived (45 minutes after placing order and only two other couples in for lunch). The top of the pie was well and truly burnt and the chips didn't lag far behind. We asked that they take the dish away and informed the waitress I didn't want to re-order another pie. But there was no offer of an alternative or an apology. We won't be back and I will be copying in friends and family with this email.

This place has some of the best food in east Lothian. The currys are always good and the desserts are so yummy. I recommend going.
