Had a delicious Sunday roast. Good menu selection. Generous portions with plenty of vegetables. Staff were polite and friendly. Dining area was not large but tables well spaced. A great way to end an enjoyable trip to St Albans antique market.

Interesting dishes. The white bait was larger than expected but very tasty. The beef blade was very filling, and there was plenty of it. The Apple Sable dessert was superb. The lady serving was very pleasant and made the meal a pleasure.

We had Sunday lunch here on Father's Day, being lucky enough to find an early available table that day. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, and accommodated my young son and our dog very well (dogs are allowed in a bar type area of the restaurant). The food was very good with suitably sized portions and quick service. The whole restaurant is very interesting with lots of quirky medieval style decor. We would come again.

Went here with a Groupon deal. The staff were friendly and professional, and our steaks were both tasty and cooked well. For the price of the deal, they were a bargain. The dining room was really nice, and we had a relaxed lunch. I love that they have not tried to spruce the restaurant. You can feel the history of the place, and it was fascinating to think of all the people who had eaten in these rooms over the past 600 years.

Have visited this pub many times, First time eating here last night. The food was the best I have experienced in st albans. Our table had starters, , hallumi, prawns, camembert and mains chicken balantine, lamb shank and beef, every dish was plentiful and delicious all commented on the great food. The service was great by all staff serving and behind the bar. Really impressed and will be eating here more often. The atmosphere was topped off with an extremely talented young man playing well known tunes on the piano. Great night. Thank you.

Such a lovely little place to eat and take in the traditional features of the decor. The Soup of the Day was piping hot and delicious. Chicken wings came with a hot sauce with a great kick and the beef and lamb were tender and well seasoned. We did not stop for drinks at the pub next door, but it looked warm and cozy.. Great staff who were helpful, friendly and welcoming - always makes a huge difference.

Booked our Mother's Day dinner here 2023. Instead of sitting in any of the restaurant rooms we were seated in front of the hotel reception..... We placed our order (trio of roast) all 3 of us with our drinks, mum's and my cider was flat and watered to high heaven. Though the menu said free Prosecco to every mum, we had to prompt the waitress to bring it to her. And then we waited, and waited and waited... A hole hour for our food. Halfway through the waitress offered free drinks for the inconvenience or writing off the ones we had already. We went with the later option. When the food arrived it was lukewarm. Potatoes inedible (like they have just been defrosted)... Meat was like offcuts... Not even a proper slice, Yorkshire's are soggy and greasy... Mine was pancake flat. Safe to say the worst roast we ever had in our life. When it came to settling the bill, though we paid a deposit to secure our table.... The whole bill was presented. Again, had to prompt the waitress to deduct the deposit... And they have blatantly added (without even asking) a 12.5% service charge to the bill.. Can't blame the business of MD, as people who came after us got their dinner (trio of roast) within 15 mins of arrival... My advice: avoid.

Convenient for an overnight stay while singing at the Abbey for the weekend. Just over the road from the Abbey, with parking included. Very large fish and chips for Saturday lunch. Later problems suggested that perhaps the fish wasn't quite cooked all through. Room was adequate. Had to choose between switching on heating and charging my phone, due to shortage of sockets. The two radiators warmed only the bottom inch or two, so could really have done with bleeding to make them more efficient. The bedroom one produced intermittent noises through the night. The desk and chair meant that sitting and viewing the TV was only possible from the side, so not a great angle. Because there was a shower, it meant that the basin was one of those small round table models. Have stayed there before; convenience was main reason for staying there again.

Bought Groupon deal. We were late and would have understood if it was full and they refused to seat us. Restaurant was empty and they claimed all the tables were reserved. But another group walked in after we weren't shown the door and promptly got a table without reservations (we heard the conversation). If the Groupon deals aren't profitable for you then don't offer it. Have lodged a complaint with Groupon.

I went to eat with my friends at the Tudors restaurant prior to the firework displays in st. Albans. We were seated at a table, but were left on our own without any (drink) menu to look at. We had to find and take the menu ourselves. The restaurant itself looks alright, but it didn't seem like they were focused on proper customer service. We even had to go to the bar to say that we want to order. No one came by to ask whatsoever. We ordered fish and chips, but we had to wait around 40 minutes for it to arrive. I even had to remind the waiter of our order, which made me think they forgot our order. The food was alright, nothing worthy of mentioning. We thought 1 hour will be enough to order and eat prior to the displays, but in the end, we ended up missing the firework because of the delay of the food.

Dark and dismal with zero atmosphere, embarrassing to think tourists get to see this place and judge St Albans. Try other pubs first that way you can get a decent experience. Maybe one day they can brighten place up, and buy some white paint and better lighting.

This historic coaching inn dates back to 1470 and has been lovingly restored & maintained over the years. I can’t comment on the hotel aspect personally but guests appear to appreciate the individuality of the rooms. Been to the small bar area a few times and it has a lovely homely/cosy feel to it. Also had breakfast here twice, following working for a charity overnight! What I’ve always noticed is the friendliness of the staff, which is indicative of a well-management establishment. Would definitely recommend to friends visiting the area.

Good food, and really enjoy the carvery. Really nice pub inside, but the signs outside don't do it justice in terms of how quaint it is inside. Knocked a star off as there's a service charge on the bill (which I wouldn't mind, but we ordered drinks at the bar and served our own carvery - didn't think 15% was justified. Left a cash tip instead).

The service was fine but food less so and did not plan to pay service but on being given bill, 12.5 % had been added.EVEN ON THE DRINKS AT THE BAR. WHY? We were asked if we wanted to run a tab. I would have said no if I had been told service would be added on drinks purchased at the bar. Bar and hotel very attractive. Nice fillet steak and it was cooked well, although an extreme shame about the rest of the food. Didn't have prosseco which was included in our groupon voucher, so got wine. Missed off a side that we ordered. Evening topped off by being served a cheesecake that was too many days past its best. Just like eating a mouthful of solidified sick... the desserts were knocked off the menu, but I was shocked they had the cheek to add or a £20 optional service charge, and then made us feel awkward when we asked it to be removed.

Favourite with locals but check the bill. This is a favourite with locals. The food is usually good, but can be inconsistent so don't be afraid to complain and send it back I'd it isn't right. And I don't think they have ever made me a correct bill: they always try to over charge me. So make notes of what you order, complain and send back as many times as needed.

Arrived a Tuesday afternoon, only one other customer in but greeted with a smile and "what can I get for you" straight away. The lady who served us mentioned that she was the only member of staff working and things may be a bit slower than normal but this was not the case. Ordered 2 drinks and 2 baguettes and came to £13! Was given drinks straight away and shown where to sit (the conservatory) whist we waited for our food which didn't take long at all. The baguettes were simple but delicious, with generous filling. Lovely friendly local pub

We arrived at what appeared a charming, characterful, old building. That was the highlight! Inside is the opposite and we were greeted with "your table is down there, second on the left" To give you some insight, I have been to Thailand many times, have many Thai friends and have eaten Thai cuisine with them, in Thailand and many Thai restaurants. The food we were served in the Golden Elephant is not representative of Thai food nor good, well cooked fresh food of any description. The Chinese mushrooms with bamboo shoots was in fact 3/4 of one close cupped mushroom with some very soggy out of date bamboo shoots. The Weeping Tiger that we asked to be cooked med rare was cooked until it was crispy. The chicken with ginger was slimy and bland. The sizzling seafood mix was 4 prawns and a few half scallops in a bland sauce. The aromatic duck was overcooked and nothing about it was aromatic. Each portion was small, bland, over cooked and failed to taste like fresh ingredients that were stir fried by a competent Chef. I know that my Thai friends would have sent it all back as would I if I hadn't been taken there by friends who have not before eaten good Thai food and I didn't want to offend them. There are many good Thai restaurant in Hertfordshire but stay away from this place.
