Last year i went in September asked the lady in the pub bar ,if she knew if the chip van thats there on friday and Saturday used fresh cut chips ,she said yes ,and sure enough they were great ,the fish and the chips ,just came from an overnight stay ,was hoping the chip van was going to be there,it looked like it was but parked behind the sports bar ,and they were taking orders from behind the bar for food so was a really big queue,put my order in 40 minutes later got a buz off the number stick ,got it and the fish was loads of batter and the chips are the usual frozen rubbish you get at most holiday camps now not impressed at all ,seems they want to make quick money now ,to lazy to use real potatoes,take my own food from now on

Staying nearby while working up this way my nearest chippy was in Glastonbury and hugely disappointing, so while in Wells today decided to try this one. Excellent crispy batter on nice flaky cod and decent chips as well, makes up for the soggy excuse for batter at the other chippy

Use this takeaway once a week and have to say, tonight, Tuesday 8th Aug was perfect, though that was because it was a different fryer on. Lovely fish, battered to perfection, not the usual over cooked stuff you get. You usually have to wait ages for your order but that's because the staff spend so much time talking to one another before serving their customers, it's like walking into a youth club, again not tonight, great staff. You do however, seem to be missing out on business, a Tuesday night and 6 people were all turned away as they wanted to eat in the Restaurant, so headed for Wetherspoons, it's such a shame this business has gone downhill for some of their ignorant staff members, you really do have the monopoly in Wells being the only place for what could be DECENT Fish & Chips !! It may well not be the case, when the new Fish bar opens in the near future.

Efficient , quick , pleasant service. Huge portions beautifully cooked. Fish and chips doesn’t travel well and its inevitably all getting a bit flabby by the time you get home. This isn’t the restaurant’s fault and it’ll happen wherever you get your takeaway F and C from. This is a good place.

Tuckers fish and chips were pretty good, but over the past 6 or so visits, the food has been steadily getting worse. Tonight’s was really revolting, over cooked fish, I reckon it had been there since lunchtime, and cold chips. Will not be recommending or visiting again.

I treated my grandchildren on Saturday Discussed at the amount of chips in the £2 portion Was goin to take it back but they were then closed Someone came in after I was served and they said to her sorry very few chips an only a fishcake left Surely if they had served before they knew there was not many chips left they should of discounted my purchase not take my money an give me hardly anything Apaling customer service Never go there again I believe there is a weights an measures act in place !!!

My partner collected pre-ordered fish and chips to bring home. The fish was weirdly chewy, the batter soggy, the chips were soft and beige, but the mushy peas were ok! How strange that some reviews are completely different to mine - it makes one wonder who wrote them!

En route to DeerLeop for a sunset, my gf and I decided to take some fish and chips with us, so we diverted via Wells. Although busy we were served promptly and the staff were both friendly and polite. They had sold out of Large Cod, so we shared regular with large chips and a portion of onion rings. The food was tasty and still piping hot when we parked up to enjoy the sun going down. We will definitely use Tuckers again if we’re in the area.

Complete rip off and the burger smelt like cat sh.t the fish my girlfriend order was under cooked, do yourself a favour and drive further or get one order from shepton! This place should be shut down! I am so angry at the service from the sweaty ginger pr.ck!

Appalling service went in this evening been going downhill rapidly after this evenings encounter will not be returning it’s a shame it’s the only chippy in wells no other customers yet the service was diabolical ordered cheeseburger salad and relish 4 staff on only the member of staff cooking was wearing a mask the 2 young lads serving no masks the one who was doing my order had to be reminded to do the bun for the burger after it had been cooked never used gloves to prepare it and the other lad was chatting and laughing to him while it took him ages to prepare all those germs were going all over my bun I checked the order and he had neglected to put the cheese in having returned it he disappeared yet again how long does it take to put a slice of cheese in after all that when my daughter ate it the bun was dry and breaking apart so obviously not fresh will definitely not be returning this establishment really does need to review their training with more emphasis on. Preparing food in a hygienic way and how their staff conduct themselves when serving paying customers

Awful. The cod was all batter; no point calling it fish and chips. Call it batter and chips. Disgusting. We drove back to show them the state of the meant to be fish which was dry and 2% of cod and 98% of batter. I’ll stick to the fish bar in street called star bar. I recommend that, better quality and cheaper. Avoid this place at all cost.

Great fish and chips-Made a visit to Wells for a funeral and looked up a chip shop in Wells, Tuckers came up so thought give I would give it a try. Lovely food, fresh cooked and friendly staff.

We used to use tuckers quite regularly but over the last 6 months the service has been awful. There’s no order in the shop whatsoever, you don’t know who’s ordered and who hasn’t, I go in for my phone collections, I can see my food in the warmer and sometimes I’ve stood there for a good 10 minutes waiting to be served and by the time I get the food home its cold. The young staff have absolutely no idea how to manage a busy shop, no urgency whatsoever to pack up orders, always forget salt and vinegar. My order has been completely wrong a few times because they’re too busy chatting! I’ve never seen someone put chips in a bag so slowly. There should be one staff member dealing with walk ins and one dealing with collections and jumping in where needed if the walk ins get busy, it’s really not difficult. It’s a shame as the food is lovely but its actually painful trying to get served!

I love fish and chips. However the experience I had recently was as follows. The cod was over cooked in the fryer and it had more batter than actual fish. The chips were soggy and didn’t seem to have salt and vinegar on them as I did ask. My mushy peas were just disgusting. I will never go again.

The other chippies in wells dont compare. Tuckers does lovely flavoured fresh and crispy fish n chips, flavoursome, and proper thick and tasty mushy peas (not watery). Genereous portions too.

The best fish and chips we have had in a very long time! Good value for money with two regular and two small for £23. The fish actually had a nice taste, unlike most fish from a take away which don't taste of anything. Very short wait and staff polite and helpful. If you are in Wells this is worth buying from.

Hungry, fussy children are never easy to please. But a visit to Tuckers worked a treat. They were fascinated by the staircase that went nowhere, and that kept them going while we waited for our food. Fish and chips that tasted just as they should! Crispy batter (slightly greasy) firm tasty cod, and chips that made me wish I never had to diet again. We went twice during our weeks holiday and yes, you might have to wait a little while if it's busy, but the food is worth it. Only dropped to 4* because of the polystyrene - eco-friendly would be better.

Always a wait in here, sometimes a long one. Only fish and chip shop in Wells and they have no competition so don't care. Often grumpy staff if you are unlucky and get a older one.

Great chips.proper chippie chips! The quality of the chicken nuggets was great- lovely chunky chicken breast - not the cheap processed type you so often get. Really nice food but can I suggest ditching the awful polystyrene containers. Think of the environment and just use paper to wrap tbe food in.

We have just left the restaurant and we have never had such beautiful fish and chips ever before. Absolute Perfection. With three fussy eaters we leave wookey hole with full tummies. The food was just wonderful not greasy at all and amazing portion sizes. Staff with were very friendly and very accommodating. But most of the cost was just unbelievable so cheap in comparison to other fish and chips shops! Such a shame we were only on a day trip but will visit once again when we return to Wooky hole!!! Top value for money and highly recommended!!

Sorry, but £8.80 for some stale chips & 2 chewy bits of cod is not good enough. Plus, the young lady had a stinking cold & should not have been serving food. Tuckers is no longer living up to its reputation 😟

The young chap who served me was friendly and took the trouble, before I left, to ensure that I had collected the can of coke for which I had paid but, I am afraid, my cod was so mushy that I doubted it even was cod. I returned to order the baked beans that I had forgotten and noted that, despite a prompt from the fryer, it took a fair short while for anyone to materialise. As the website claims, there was a 'friendly atmosphere', but this came at the expense of customer service rather than as a complement to it. While two staff said goodbye to their colleagues as they left at the end of their day, the other staff engaging in this allowed a queue of five people behind me to build up without any of the staff being 'out front' - except the lady whose role at that point evidently was limited to sorting vinegar bottles and not to attracting the attention of those who should have been serving. I'm ever so sorry, but as soon as a business takes its eye off its customers, it can be as 'friendly' as it likes, but I won't be going back during my week here.

Having walked past Tuckers on many visits to Wells, we decided to give them a try last week.

The service here was awful and the food was as equally as bad. The girl behind the counter was rude. The food did not taste fresh. Avoid this place at all costs.

Chips looked like they had been cooked in dirty oil. Fish was greasy and not crispy. You could almost ring the oil out of the fish.

Fish and chips were outstanding. Especially the fish. Very crispy with great batter. Looks like this place could get busy quick so maybe great idea to call ahead? You can also eat inside. Best fish and chips we have had in the UK.

Recently discovered this gem in Wells. The large cod is big enough for two and the batter is just how we like it, crunchy. Good size portion of chips which again is how we like them, soft inside and crunchy outside!

Luckily we arrived just before the shop closed early for the Christmas holidays. The cod and chips was perfect. Fish that melted in the mouth, piping hot chips. Perfect!

Stood in a queue of about 15 people for 40 minutes waiting for a simple cod and chips. The incompetent staff kept serving people who’d only just arrived long before customers who had waited for ages, much to their annoyance. The place stunk of old oil that hadn’t been changed in days, so the food probably tasted rank, but I never found out because after 40 minutes I asked for my money back and left.

This was the best chip and ship restaurant we have experienced. spotlessly clean and comfortable .

I was very disappointed with my second visit, hoping it may have improved I went again. No such luck, my fish was grey,the batter was over cooked and it had a lot more batter than fish.

I was very disappointed with the fish and chips which I had from here. Having lived in Cheddar and had numerous very tasty and yummy fish and chips from Tickers in Cheddar I was pleased to note there was one in Wells. I had two lots of fish and chips from the Wells Tuckers and both times they have been awful. On Saturday (12th August) I went in with my grandchildren and we had to wait whilst they cooked children's fish and chips. What's wrong with this. Well the service was take the order and serve one person at a time. If it had Belen left to me I would have left but the children were looking forward to their fish and chips. When we got home it was a case of hunt the fish in the batter in the children's meals and my fish was no better. There was more very stodgy batter than anything else. I couldn't even give the left overs to the dog as he would have been sick. If it had just been me I would have bought my meal back and complained but couldn't really do this with my grandchildren. I will not be buying fish and chips again in Tuckers in Wells. A total and utter waste of money.

Una tradicional británico fish n chips con pescado y patatas fritas. Tuve el abadejo, que fue fantástico y mi compañero tenía la roca que también era fantástica. Muy clientes contentos.

Así es un día húmedo en Wells. Yo no tenía intención de comer, pero el pescado y fragancia no podría ser chippery evitado!

Después de esperar media hora para 2 todos los desayunos día nos quedamos muy decepcionados. La presentación era apetecible - todo parecía tirado en el plato. Fish cakes are tasteless & appears to have watered down vinegar. far too many chips. Husband didn't enjoy the fish saying it was greasy and the prices need to be lowered. Such a shame as once you couldn't get better than tuckers fish and chips.

Amazing staff, clean and the food is so tasty! Would recommend to anyone. The chef with dark hair short, is so polite and always chatting and smiling. Been here a few times now and never fails to cook a good cod.

I phoned my order through stating, 1 lrg cod, 1 chicken wing an chips and a lrg portion of chips, (exactly like that) the women on the phone repeated " lrg fish&chips, chicken wing&chips and lrg portion of chips. I replied no and repeated my order, after a little confusion and much attitude from the member of staff she gave me a time 2 pick it up and hung up very abruptly. My wife picked up the food, double checked with the lady to make sure the order was correct, she said yes, and commented "but he didn't know what he wanted on the phone" My order was wrong. I wanted a lrg cod and a lrg chips (we needed more chips) not a lrg cod and chips together. Come on Tuckers I love ur food but not certain members of your staff, this happens every time I order from u. And if I want attitude I'll order it or go speak to my 15 year old son.

Once a month treat is take-away. Opted for Fish and Chips last week, and happened to be in Wells (live closer to the Cheddar, where there is another Tuckers), so opted to order from Wells instead.Standard was as good, cooked to order and batter crispy all round - no soggy bottoms!!Glad I got in when I did as it soon filled up and there only so many orders you can manage at a time, so suspect some people do experience queues - but goes to show how good the food is if you ask me.Enough said.

Very good traditional chip shop where everything is freshly cooked as you wait. Food is very tasty and reasonably priced.

The food at this chip shop is amazing the pie the fishcakes the spring rolls and the cheese burgers are the absolute best the chips aren't my favourite but they are nice enough especially with a nice dunk of curry sauce. The service however is extremely slow sadly I went in recently and ordered my food others ordered theirs too before me the lady knew she needed three fishcakes and that there was two available and rather than ask the fryer to put more in she waited until all my other food was ready then said have you got any more fishcakes in I then had to wait a further ten minutes for the fishcake to cook which was annoying, it meant the other stuff I order for everyone was left waiting around on top of the cookers. Some of the staff are very friendly but some can be a bit off on the whole they are nice tho.

We were a group of 6 adults and 7 children visiting on a Saturday evening when we were camping nearby. We sat down to eat-in at the room in the back. Service was friendly and helpful and the food was plentiful (the fisherman's platter was MASSIVE). to be honest, the children's portion of cod bites and chips portion would have done me just fine, but I chose haddock, chips and mushy peas which were lovely. Chips were top notch!

Top class fish and chips, sorted us out yesterday making a phone order for over a dozen bags of chips. A regular place we visit when we are in the area.

The omens weren't good. People were queuing out the door on a wet evening. When we witnessed the service at the takeaway counter it was easy to understand why.The two ladies were very pleasant but they were only processing one order at a time. So, someone would order a dish and if it wasn't available they were waiting for it to be cooked before taking the next order. This wasn't a one off - exactly the same thing happened to me here before.The fish and chips aren't good enough to justify the wait.

Popped in here for a takeaway. I think we may have just been unlucky as one piece of cod was very good and the other, well, not great. (There seemed to be as much batter as fish.)On the plus side the chips were good (a generous regular portion fed 3 of us) and the mushy peas very tasty (and again plenty of them).

Friday night fish and chips, obviously popular at this shop. Had to queue which I think shows what the locals think of Tuckers. Had cod and chips, reasonable price and Good quality. Recommended. Only 6 min walk from b&b No.23 .

We have had fish & chips from Tuckers many times in the last 12 months. The quality is very inconsistant! I generally have a large fish, which is normally over-cooked and has the texture of plywood, ie, dry and fiberous. The chips are usually ok. After eating here I sometimes feel that we have paid a premium price for a sub-standard product. Disappointing.

Succulent haddock, light crispy batter, fresh chips and proper mushy peas garnished with lemon and served with a smile. Tonight is carnival night and the restaurant is really busy but standards haven't slipped. Absolutely delicious.The pot of tea was good too.

The chips are always good, as is the fish most of the time, and the staff are always friendly. The only thing I've had a problem with is the sausages they use, i know sausages are pretty gross by there very nature, but if you held a gun to my head and forced me to eat one of them or a condom full of dog food, it would be a close call, because they're essentially the same thing.

I have waited for over twenty years for faggots and chips and was not disappointed. From the delicious peas tothe succulent faggots and superb chips it was a meal to savour. And mention should be made of our friendly andhelpful waitress, Freya. And don't forget the ginger beer. Heaven indeed!

I was very disappointed with the chips that I bought at Tuckers. I had to throw them away as they were as far from crisp as you could imagine and tasted/smelt strongly of oil that hasn't been changed enough. Surely it can't be that hard to cook a crisp chip in oil that shouldn't taste or smell of anything. Yuk.

The chips aren't the best I've ever had but they are really nice all the same, the fish cakes are amazing and so are the pies I have to queue for a long time sometimes due to long queues but that just shows how good the place is I have always liked going in for a treat to have a nice pie and fish cake with curry sauce and chips it's my favourite. the staff are also really friendly which is nice. The prices are also really good not overpriced at all.

Visited at lunchtime on Thursday 21st May. Wanted fish in gluten free batter which they have done for us before. The lady serving went and asked the man doing the frying and came back with a weak excuse that the man who did this was not in the shop. By the look on the face of the miserable man doing the cooking it appeared that either he did not care or he was too lazy to cook the fish the way we liked it. So, I asked for two pasties to go with the chips. The lady went out into a back room and said they only had one meat pasty but they did have cheese pasties. So I agreed to have one meat and one cheese pasty. The pasties were warmed and placed in boxes with the chips.On getting home we discovered that we had in fact been given two cheese pasties.These had the texture of rubber. Additionally the chips were greasy and half of them were the little hard bits that had been scraped out of the bottom of the serving tray.The meal was consigned to the bin. We will not return to Tuckers.

Had some fish and chips here the other night. Opened the box and it looked good starting eating the fish and found some hairs on the fish. Thought it was my imagination until I found at least 4. Mentioned to my partner and then he looked closer in his and found some. Not sure what happened here as so usually good. Put us off for a while. Tried phoning to let them know but no answer.

I've been several times before and more often than not the quality of the food is better than I had today. Sometimes the fish can be really nice with crisp batter and pure white chunks of cod. Today my food was luke warm and as if the fish and been cooked in a dishwasher. Service is generally unprofessional and quite slow, but the food usually makes up for it.

Truckers gives you all you would expect from a traditional fish and chip restaurant and take-away. Very good value and friendly staff who go that extra mile. Very aware of allergies and sensitive to gluten free needs.

Okay so i just ordered a small fish and chips from wells tuckers. I was so disappointed when i opened the box to see what was inside, the fish was average sized but i only had a hand full of chips. The chips were tasty but i won't be ordering from there again as i felt ripped off, i was still hungry after i ate it. If you go there and plan to order a small fish and chips DONT otherwise you will be disappointed like me. i suggest ordering the small fish and ask for a cone of chips in a tray, it's cheaper and they will probably give you more.also don't expect friendly service.

Went here for a family meal, plates and cups from other customers still on the table, and they remained there whilst we had something to eat, even the member staff didnt remove them when she took our order.Ordered chicken & chips with curry sauce, chicken & chips arrived though curry sauce was still missing for some 5mins before we had to ask staff for it. Ordered All day brunch, sausage was missing though in fairness the adult meals did include a hot drink. There is a few mistakes on the price list which made us chuckle £195 for a bottle of j2o and £120 for apple juice which was noticed by our daughter.Was nice to see they now accept card payments.

We love fish and chips and have visited Tuckers on quite a few occasions. Mostly they serve a very good meal but occasionally they have a bad hair day and serve rubbish. It seems it is just down to the staff. Sometimes they are very grumpy, other times they are fine and smiley.Overall this chippy is good, especially the sit down meal. A piece of advice is that they should push gluten free. This is increasingly important and any chippie that caters for the gluten intolerant is on a winner since many people have now found themselves afflicted by this condition.We wish them well and hope they heed our comments.

Called in for some fish & chips last week whilst on holiday & was not disappointed! Lovely crisp batter with fresh juicy fish & in my humble opinion the chips were even better, crispy on the outside, smooth & fluffy on the inside. Had to go back for more before coming home! Staff were friendly, Highly recommended.

Visited Wells for the day. Popped into Tesco opposite Tuckers. Couldn't be bothered to cook when we got home so decided to get take away Fish and Chips. Went into Tuckers and ... discovered their Restaurant at back. Ordered a variety of meals, Cod and chips, Fishcakes and all day Brunch. Excellent service, excellent surroundings and excellent food. No soggy chips, no excess oil, nobody around us looking like they had 'issues' with what was on their plate. We will be returning next time we're in Wells!

Greasy soggy chips and fish, very disappointing. Staff were pleasant but I dont think Ive ever had such oil soaked fish, broke through the batter to a puddle of oil and all our various portions were the same

We visit this chip shop once every month and have always had good fish and chips except for the last time. The chips were soggy and under cooked. The fish is usually good. The portions are a good size. The place is clean.

W decided to buy fish & chips and sit on a bench in a local church grave yard as it was such a hot evening. Lovely fresh food, pleasant service and very clean. This hit the spot much better than the rather average restaurant we visited in Wells the previous evening....

We had been to this café/chip shop on our last visit to Wells...about 18 mnths ago.It was great then and served large and tasty portions.We had the misfortune to visit this Monday...10th.It was horrid..The chips were the worst ever.....brown...dried up...lukewarm.Luckily the salad in the burger was fresh.I told the guy serving they were the most horrible chips ever.He agreed and said more or less don't come on a Monday morning as they use the chips from Saturday.! I was so dumbstruck I just paid and left.

We were on holiday in Wells and staying with friends. Decided to take a break from cooking! At the end of a very wet day freshly made haddock and chips did the trick! Would also recommend the town walk which leaves from the Crown at 11am on Saturdays and Wednesdays!

Dont bother with any other chippy in Wells this is where the locals eat!! freshly cooked everything makes a very tasty supper.very busy tea times especially friday and saturdays.

We usually get a takeaway although they have a small restaurant. The fish and chips are usually top notch and always taste freshly cooked.

What more can I say they serve good food at a good price. Also I rate the tuckers in cheddar

The three of us ate take away fish and chips from Tuckers. The haddock was excellent which is an accolade from my father who hails from Grimsby. The pea fritter was excellent also. A good local chippy although there was something of a wait for service.

We visited Tuckers after an afternoon slogging up the slopes of the Cheddar gorge and were pleasantly surprised to find courteous staff serving excellent fish and chips at very reasonable prices. Even the chicken nuggets the kids had were real chicken breast unlike the mechanically recovered mush that so many other places serve. Overall an exceptional meal from what could otherwise be a very ordinary chippy.
