Absolutely shocked and dismayed that a massive hotel group can justify well over £130 a night for a room that has a TV the size of a postage stamp, does not have a lift in working order, even though there are 5 floors. We were beleived that all rooms had been updated, modernised, and a hotel you could rely to bring comforts. Absolutely shocking. Travelodge are..... Good at ripping people off. Would have been cheaper staying outwith the city and paying for a bus, tram or Taxi. We will do next time.

Stayed here a few nights in October. I realise this is a budget hotel but that doesn't excuse the room being dirty. There were some sort of splashes on the wall by the bed (seriously hope it was yogurt). The outside of the toilet was dirty, the mugs and spoons, one of the towels had a pubic hair stuck in it. Dust everywhere. At one point the toilet got clogged. There was no help to get with that. But the evening staff tried. When the idea of a room switch by the staff came about the problem had solved it self. There was a storm going on so it is possible the pipes got overfilled with water. The building is old. I was also told by staff that sometimes the toilet can also overflow. That was a nice thought. This hotel is located on a somewhat of a party street so there were people knocking and then trying to get in on different occasions. The location is great if you want to shop and have a short walk to the tram. But I will not be staying here again.

Firstly the good things - reception staff and housekeeping were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is a perfect location for the non-tourist shopping area of Edinburgh, but it is still only a 10-minute walk from the Royal Mile. Plenty of eateries, bars, cafes and coffee shops very close by. Very handy as it's cheaper to go out for breakfast than have the in-house breakfast offering. Now the negative. The radiator heating the room wouldn't stay at a comfortable temperature, meaning we'd wake up cold in the middle of the night under the thin duvet. Google helped with the heater, but it shouldn't be necessary. Even though we booked as a couple, we had 2 bath towels but only 1 hand towel. Reception was happy to hand out more, but when the towels get refreshed you end up with 1 hand towel again. There is no bath mat, and we overheard another guest being told by reception that they shouldn't expect that in a budget hotel. The shower curtain didn't keep all the water in, so take your life in your hands. We stayed 5 nights and at no point did housekeeping tidy the room/clean the bathroom/replenish the toilet rolls (we had to ask for more)/freshen the room. You only get the option to have the towels refreshed. See above for how well that went. The lift wasn't working. And there are no ground floor rooms. Whilst we were moved to a first-floor room prior to arrival, it's the equivalent of 2 flights up. Got the feeling that the lift had been broken for a while and would be broken for a while yet. Assistance is offered to carry luggage upstairs, but that misses the point. All members of our party are 50+, and not necessarily physically able to deal with that many stairs in one go. The room itself was adequate, the pillows either too shallow or deep depending on how you paired them. The mattress was the right level of firm. The headboard was also the bedside storage, with a tiny alcove not quite big enough to store a phone, let alone anything else. A tiny dressing table mostly covered with tea-making facilities. No drawers or shelves, you have to live out of your suitcase. The only hanging space was a rail on the underside of the spare pillow shelf that also happened to be over the only chair in the room, and right next to one side of the bed. So you have to choose to have somewhere to sit or somewhere to hang your clothes, and get out of bed halfway down so you don't stand up in your hanging clothes. The windows in room 101 are huge and let in lots of light - and give the people in the office 4m away on the other side of the street a nice view. The window in the bathroom is frosted for privacy, but it's also single-glazed, so likely extra frosted in winter. The blackout curtains work well, so well that you have to open them in daytime to see what you're doing, but then so can the office workers. Yes there are lights - the main light is a dazzling very white light, the bedside lights are very dull so only really suitable after dark. No alternative light sources to get a balance. Suffice to say, we spent as little time as possible in the room. In summary, I've stayed in many hotels, hostels and B&Bs in the last 35 years, and this hotel reminds me of a budget hotel from the 1990s. The problem is you pay a high price for what is essentially a self-service hostel. It's a shame that the running costs have been pared back so much that the hotel itself suffers. Have stayed in many travelodges in the last decade and this refurbished one is by far the worst. In the future, I'd probably look at the nearby premier inn offerings rather than stay here again. I didn't expect luxury given the hotel chain, but I also didn't expect every corner to be seemingly cut and every luxury pared down for the sake of the bottom line.

Choose for the central location, but be aware that there are a noisy pub on the side of the hotel. We stayed in a family room which smelled moldy and I'm pretty sure mold spots had been painted over in the bathroom... the desktop fan just barely made it feel like there were air in the room. I won't be returning to this hotel and I would not recomend it to anyone else.

Best thing about the place: the location. The "okay" things: The cleaniness is not excellent but not awful. Only one big towel per person and one small for the room without any carpet for the bathroom. The bad things: No luggage storage so either you pay a private service elsewhere (the train stations don't have that anymore so don't count on it) either you pay for an early check-in (our room wasn't ready but for £15 they can make one clean room appear apparently). Unlike what it says on the Maps description, there is no kitchen (so no restaurant and their option for breakfast is a "to-go" one you have to order the day before) and the "free" WiFi is only for 30 minutes per device for the whole stay. The lift is out of order and by reading reviews here it has been months, it seems. Fortunately, we had a room on the first floor but now I get to tell you about the worst thing... Room 111 is to avoid! The room is directly above a bar with loud music until 1 AM. We could recognize every songs and if not, we could search them easily given that we were able to hear every lyrics. We were fortunate to come by the room at 6 PM and be able to swing by a Boots to buy some ear plugs. That and our exhaustion were the only things that permitted us to sleep. After reading other reviews, we didn't bother to complain because they clearly know the problem and don't do anything about it. We were so happy to stay just for one night!

I know this hotel has a very strategic position to city center and many tourism destinations, but many points should be improve for the management. First, the lift didn't work. Can you imagine, I bring two toddlers and my room in level 2, it's so tiring. Second, the room wasn't fancy enough, th3 style is too old. Moreover, the bathroom is so slippery. Thridly, the price is not that worth.

Stayed in a family room. Reception unattended despite it being stated as 24hr No toilet roll No hairdryer No room phone to contact reception so had to use the premium cost number to request these things. Floors were creaky in the room so everyone was disturbed at night time toilet visits Lift didn't go to our floor so we had to go to floor above and walk stairs down. Difficult for anyone with mobility challenges. Room was very very warm and windows didn't open (for safety apparently) There was a desk top fan left in the room, evidence they knew it was a sweat box. No drinking water available and reception declined to supply any.

Superb location. Noisy at night. Take your ear plugs as you can hear folk out in the streets through the night. Does the job if all you're wanting is a central base to sleep and get ready. We were out doing stuff through the day. Walking distance to Arthur's Seat too! So handy for Waverley Station 🚉

Don’t come here if you want to sleep. Karaoke night in the pub below meant little sleep on Wednesday night. Plus no facility to leave luggage on the day of check out.

Lift out of order, which was a bit of a killer! Room nice. Window exterior a bit grimy. Quiet room, even though so central. Tea and coffee top up non-existent, but then the poor housekeeping staff were having to lug everything up and down the stairs too, so hardly surprising! TV worked. Bought the WiFi package (always a very cheeky, sneaky charge for a cheap amenity, in a not cheap hotel.) Friendly, helpful staff. Comfy beds and extra pillows. Nice stay, but not if we had been on the 4th floor with no lift as originally booked..

Very good location in Rose Street, New Town close to pubs, restaurants, shops and transportation. With that though you get noise, but it wasn’t a problem for us as we were round the back. Light was a problem and the curtains aren’t good at blocking it out. We stayed here before and the lift was out of order and this time it went out of action, so don’t stay here if you have mobility problems.

I spent two nights here during my solo trip to Edinburgh. For the price you pay, this is a clean, no-frills hotel that gets the job done. As I was out and about all day, I did not mind missing amenities that are included with other hotels, such as pre-packaged shampoo and conditioner, a refrigerator, and storage space. The bed was GREAT. It was the best comforter I've had in a hotel. They also provide a desk fan if you want a bit of white noise to go to sleep to. You could hear the occasional passerby talking and laughing, but that's to be expected when you are on such a busy street. The staff was exceptionally friendly and always willing to help. When I arrived, their lift was out of service, so their security guard walked my bags up to my room on the second floor. The lift was fixed by the next day.

Central location. That is all positive about this worn, poorly run hotel. Rooms are basic, which would not be a problem if the carpet wasn‘t old and smelly. No hairdryer in the room, so had to go down to the reception to learn that all hairdryers are taken. Dirty towels were left on the floor. They didn’t clean but instead left a dirty cleaning cloth on top of the towels. Reception did their best, but I felt sorry for them as they were also victim of the poor management and the hotels rules and regulations. To name one: Soap was mixed with water to safe soap. One may think: it‘s ok, this is not the Ritz. Well, for 250 Pounds per night, I expect not to be treated like cattle.

Very dirty hotel . The carpets in the room have stains on them. There is a strong rubbish and urine smell on the corridor leading to the rooms. Asked if the carpet could be hoovered as there was clearly food crumbs and some dirt was told they only hoover once a week. The list is endless just avoid this hotel if you can.

Went to pizzahut around 1345 on Friday, only around 30 to 40 percent of the tables were occupied but been told they are fully booked. Don't think it's a big party booking as people's seating scattered the restaurant evenly. The restaurant either don't want us to eat there at all or the management was so inefficient. One of the kids really wanted pizzahut so we ordered takeaway. No one with booking walked in during our 20min wait. We just have to wait at the entrance looking at all these empty tables. I have never been told a restaurant is fully booked when there were so many empty tables. At the end the pizza wasn't even as good as the free one from Tenpin...

Our first stop in Edinburgh was the elephant cafe . Upon arrival at the cafe we were totally surprised that it is opened and that there was no queue . Waited excitedly to be seated and a young lady ushered us to a lovely window seats overlooking the street. Just as we were getting ourselves comfortable, another lady by the name Samiha came by and questioned “who gave you the table “ Honestly we were quite taken aback. Being a well travelled person of my age this was totally not acceptable and plain rude. The second episode was when I went to the cashier to ask if I should order at the counter , the same staff exaggeratedly commented in Spanish (I think) that I was impatient. The episode didn’t end here. Later the same lady, Samiha, found out that I was trying to get her name. She came back and challenged me lecturing me throughout that cafe is very “crowded” ; customers need to wait to be seated. The whole issue is we were ushered to the seats by the window! We did not just barged in! Honestly this kind of behaviour is totally not acceptable . To my worst horror i later found out she is the supervisor of the cafe ! A junior staff who had witnessed all this and was so sweet that she apologised profusely on behalf of the rude supervisor for my bad experience! Fine cafe but be warned of ill mannered supervisor !

Good pastry We had the scones and they were delicious On the other hand, the service leaves something to be desired. In fact when you come home it’s hello, what do you want? You don't have time to think, it has to go quickly, the staff is rushing you. I advise you to eat there so you can sit down and have more time to read the menu than to take away.
