Towan Beach Fish & Chips in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

I'm not taking this lightly. I spent most of my childhood holidays in Blackpool and spent much of the last 20 years living in Brighton and Bournemouth. I have never had such incredible fish and chips. Both myself and my fiancée shared a cod and chips with curry sauce and brother and sister in law had the same. The eldest had a hog roast roll. How this tiny little unsuspecting kiosk was able to produce food of this quality, at the pace they did, and so incredibly fresh, is a complete and utterly mystery to me. The white fish was melt in the mouth, the batter incredibly light and crispy. The curry sauce was perfect thickness and complimented the crispy chips. They even topped the fish with a crispy batter bits for that extra crisp and crunch. Not to be outdone, the hog roast was really delicious. I could eat it morning noon and night. Can't wait to come back!

So, this is a long overdue review and I shall admit that I have an ulterior motive. You see my youngest son, Jake loves the chips that this establishment serves more than life itself. If you think this a little extreme then a further explanation that, like a lot of people with autism, when Jake likes something - he really commits to his feelings - might provide valuable context. The chips that are served here are unique. They are scalloped (curved in a gentle u-shape) allowing you to 'scoop' up sauce/mayo etc without spilling it. Maybe I've had a sheltered life but I've not seen this chip innovation anywhere else and they are amazing. Anyway, my lad has been eating them - on our family jaunts to N'quay - since he was a small boy. He's even named them. Scoopy Chips! When I ask him what's his favorite place in the world, he says Newquay. When I ask him why, his answer is...Scoopy Chips (he's now 18 years old now and 6' 6" by the way). I happened to contact the owner prior to a visit in Oct'23 - to see if she was going to be open - and identifying myself as the nutter who calls ahead to ask about scoopy chips - she was absolutely lovely. So welcoming and charming to my boy. It was a joy visiting her lovely place again and Jake can gratefully report the scoopy chips were as consistently awesome as ever. So, if you want my advice? Go to Newquay, when you're there, go to Towan beach which is the best beach and when there, turn right at the bottom of the steps. Head toward the lady with the beautiful smile and the outrageously large, hairy/sandy dog and buy yourself a lovely portion of fish and scooppy chips. If you're lucky, you might love them as much as Jake. The ulterior motive? We're actually coming down again for Feb Half term. Are you open and do you have ample supplies of you know what? Cheeseburger, cheesy chips and a pork roll, all absolutely amazing! Great people, lovely food, excellent location. And check out the gorgeous Newfoundland dog they have.

This was our second visit to this fish and chip shop in 2 days, so that speaks for itself. We love the crispy batter and excellent fish.The service is fantastic. On the second day ,the lady manager dealt amazingly well with a very difficult and unreasonable customer,who threatened her with a bad review. Having witnessed what really occurred, we do hope that this doesn't happen. Please give this great place your support. They deserve it. Jon M.

After a couple of hours whilst on a day trip into the town itself from where we were staying, and a trip to the aquarium, we were looking for something to get for our lunch and fish and chips was what we were after. So we had a walk down to the food huts on the beach front area (on level with the aquarium), and we are glad that we did. It was most certainly the best fish and chips that we have had in a very long time and certainly different to the usual chippy items. The fish was succulent and the batter was amazing. The chips were also lovely too, along with the tarter sauce. Neither the fish or the chips had the greasy after taste. No complaints with portion size or options for adults and children alike, and staff were friendly. If we are ever down at that part of the town again we’d definitely make use of the shop.
