Had dinner twice during our three night stay at the hotel. On the first occasion (a Friday) it was a very good experience with excellent service. Unfortunately not so the second time (a Sunday). It wasn't busy but everything took a long time. They were so slow with the desserts that we thought we'd been forgotten about. We decided just to get the bill but then finally the desserts arrived. However we'd finished all our drinks, it was late and they were closing, so we had to decline them. It was a shame as the food on both occasions was pretty good and the staff were very polite and eager to please (and they were very apologetic about the poor service).

Dreadful service for a small table of 2 on a seemingly quiet night. Despite booking over 3 hours in advance and arriving on time, we had to alert staff that we were still present 30 minute after being led to our table. After this wait, drinks took 25 minutes to arrive - only after chasing (a simple order of 1 lager and 1 cloudy apple juice). One of the side-orders arrived before the drinks. It was 50 minutes before anything was delivered to the table; 55 minutes before a drink was delivered. The drinks delivered were incorrect. The food menu is small and simple. There’s enough to cater for most people, but if you’re staying for more than a few days, you’re going to get bored. This is where the second of two stars comes from. The food delivered to our table was initially substantially incorrect. The wait-staff attempted to deliver the order of one of the other of 3 tables to us. Apologies were made, another 10 minutes went by. Finally, our order arrived, 70 minutes after arriving. Starters and mains all delivered together. The order so far was: side-dish, then drinks, then starters and mains together. The medium rare steaks that were ordered were well-done. Enough was enough. We returned the main course and insisted on paying for what we had consumed (everything except mains) despite the manager offering everything for free. We appreciated the manager trying to make things right, but did not appreciate him trying to blame things on the restaurant being so busy and Covid-19. There were at most 3 other tables at the time. One with 4 people, the others with two each. In summary, unacceptably poor service and poor quality of cooking for premium prices. There is a decent variety of food on a small menu, which is only acceptable if quality, presentation and service is top notch.

We ate here as part of our hotel stay, dinner was included. It was a limited menu but a good selection. Food was freshly cooked and hot. Service was excellent, staff wore masks, kept their distance and tables were nicely spread out. All in all a good experience.

We were staying on a dinner bed and breakfast package but it wasn’t really as you could not buy a three course dinner for the cost allowance of £28. The cheapest three options were £29.50. Very limited menu and indifferent food served not quite hot enough, and mostly poor service though Christian and Claire broke the mold thank goodness!

The food is good, wellresented andrewsonably priced. The staff are friendly and professional. The atmosphere is good. However, the menu is very limited. But, when we questioned this, we were allowed to choose from the much more extensive lounge bar menu. When we questioned the waitress, she told me they were aware of the limitations of the restaurant menu.

Restaurant wasn’t busy, in fact the bar was busier. Ordered the Park Royal burger which arrived fresh and hot with side of chips and fresh made coleslaw. Food tasted great, plenty of flavour and a good amount of relish, cheese, gherkins, onions and salad. Price of the food was average, any more and I would have felt like it wasn’t a good deal. Service was good, the team made every effort to ensure that I was looked after and they served with a smile. Top marks to the chef too, food at the other tables also looked fantastic. If you are visiting the Park Royal hotel it’s definitely worth eating in the restaurant.

I was struggling for a title then I realised that the Topiary had no topiary. If that makes sense. Anyway, aside from the lack of shrubbery, clipped or otherwise, the restaurant is attached to The Park Royal Hotel. I ate an evening meal and breakfast there and both were good. Evening meal There are options for bar food and restaurant. I chose restaurant and selected tortellini. I was informed it’s more risotto than tortellini. Confused, it was explained that this was a heap of risotto with a large tortellini on top. I went for the frittata instead, plus a side order of triple cooked chips and a side salad. You know how you picture something in your head before you see it? I did not picture this. The salad was microscopic. There were a good handful of chips and there were two slices of frittata artistically arranged. I couldn’t fault the taste, but if you’re hungry, be aware. I asked for a couple of bits of fruit like a banana and an apple for dessert, but they seemed unwilling. I got a mixed chopped salad which would come with a sorbet and was charged accordingly. Breakfast Perfectly serviceable. No veggie options apparent though. At least, I didn’t see any signs. I had scrambled egg, mushrooms and roasted potato. Coffee was good. The service was very good although the girl who brought my food had a horrible cough. I wonder if I’ll catch it :-(

No puedo esperar!

We stayed for the weekend on a dinner bed and breakfast rate so my husband and I had a £28 allowance from the main menu while our children ate from the children's or Main menu. On the first evening we ordered the bread starter ( as q hotels no longer seem to offer any complimentary bread or rolls while you wait for your food). While the bread starter was well presented it was rather annoying that you had to eat it directly off the table as you are not provided with side plates. My husband had burger and fries for main, which he enjoyed. The children's pizza and chicken nuggets were OK, although both far too salty for an adult, never mind a child. The chicken nuggets were meant to be served with salad and dip but when we asked for these the waitress didn't come back. I had the sea bass, which was a small plate of food and the fish was very overcooked and the accompaniments (squash purée and a crab pancake) were mildly warm. The sticky toffee pudding dessert was good but the cheesecake dessert was poor..very tasteless and the base was very heavy. The restaurant was full on the Saturday evening but there were plenty of serving staff (mainly teenagers or students) who were unable to do much more than bring food from the kitchen. It took 3 attempts to order a glass of wine during our meal. Our second evening was awful. We had a Thai mushroom starter, which again was served without side plates. There was far too much sauce on the mushrooms and it certainly didn't taste like Thai (more like Indian curry). My husband ordered medium steak and fries. The steak was rare. I ordered salmon, broccoli bearnaise and little gem leaves with French dressing. I got salmon, broccoli floating in a bowl of runny single cream and Caesar salad. When I pointed it out to the server she didn't seem to know what the food should be! The kids shared an adult meat feast pizza. It was truly awful. The base was tough and chewy (my husband struggled to cut it with a steak knife), and there were huge chunks of chicken and far too much stringy cheese on top. Again, far too salty. Desserts took about 25 minutes to appear, but the staff did offer us complimentary tea/ coffee ( but then proceeded to add a £7 service charge to the bill!). My son was charged £6 for 3 scoops of ice cream and when we queried this we were told it's the same dessert but charged at £6 on the adult menu but £2.50 on the children's, which is what he had. When we checked out of the hotel, we wasted a good 10 minutes sorting through the restaurant bills as they had failed to credit us the dinner allowance.I'm afraid to say it's highly unlikely we will return to the Park Royal hotel. It has deteriorated to such an extent that even the dinner bed and breakfast rates are no longer attractive as the restaurant is so poor.

Went there with family and friends a party of 12 for Sunday lunch as we occasionally do as a family get together. What a disappointment from previous visits. So much so we have decided that our next planned lunch together in January will definitely be somewhere else. The portion sizes were very small, particularly the main parts of the meal, the meat was wafer thin and transparent the fish portion was very small . The potatoes were uncooked in places and the gravy was particularly unpleasant thin and watery. As you can imagine amongst 12 people we sampled most of the menu and when we got together we all agreed it was the worst meal we had eaten there. Even the coffee we had in the lounge after was tepid. The only good thing about the experience was the staff were helpful and friendly but that couldn't make up for such a disappointing meal .

Invited to dine here as part of a family gathering.Quality of food was very good, but on clarifying the availability of vegetables with the main course, I was informed that these were a side order as the food was nouvelle cuisine style. Accepted and awaited! A 'colourful' bowl of green beans and broccoli arrived with the main course that already had a small portion of green beans with it!You live and learn........... However, if the restaurant is going to present itself as nouvelle cuisine then the rest of the experience should perhaps match: Bent cutlery (forks), inability to clear the table of empty glasses, sauces and condiments left at the table during the dessert and luke warm coffee. I cannot recall the last time that nobody visited the table during the main course to enquire if everything was OK (standard practice in most good restaurants). Thank you for good food but I will not rush back.

Our first debate was between having the seafood platter as a shared starter or as a main course. We both found other tempting main course options and shared the platter. The beetroot-cured salmon was innovative and excellent. The restaurant asked for feedback on this so was clearly an innovation. Crunchy, tasty whitebait came on an excellent bowl of freshly made tartar sauce, and squid rings with their own sauce. Smoked salmon finished the platter accompanied with warm herby sourdough bread.I had the fillet of pork wrapped in parma ham with braised pork cheek accompanied by excellent crunchy veg and a side of mash. My wife had the roast carrot on a pearl barley risotto. We shared the English cheeseboard to polish off our Argentinian Malbec. Cornish brie, a smoked red Leicester and a mature blue stilton. The service was excellent, relaxing atmosphere despite the plastic topiary and a well kept Timothy Taylors Landlord in the bar made for the perfect night. We returned the next night and had another fine meal with fish and seafood mains with an excellent Chilean white wine.

I've stayed here before - nice hotel, good facilities. My meal tonight though was something else... bread and dipping oil started things off well with a reasonable if somewhat pricey glass of Malbec. I had potted trout to start - which was...well, mashed up trout in a pot covered in mayonnaise... No seasoning - extremely bland. The short rib of beef was again accurately described - I had to hunt for two small mouthfuls of beef amongst a pile of fat (and a short rib). No-one checked if my meal was ok until I'd finished (I made my feelings known) - I then sat for 17 minutes without anyone serving me...I spoke to the manager afterwards - he said that "I should have pointed out the problems with the meal earlier" I would have...if anyone had checked. I had to ask for the food to be taken off the bill - it wasn't offered.

We decided to not have a dessert and instead opted for a mezze to share to start, which included olives, sun blush tomatoes, warm bread and a selection of meats and we both opted for the shoulder of lamb which came with rosemary mash and green beans, both of which were delicious.I chose a glass of Pinot Grigio and my boyfriend chose a Pinot Grigio Blush, both glasses were warm and the wine was really low quality. Not what we were expecting. We ordered two vodkas later on and they were much more enjoyable. We would definitely each here again but don't think I'll be choosing the wine.

We stayed at the Park Royal, and having checked out TripAdvisor for reviews of local restaurants we decided to eat in the hotel's restaurant - the Topiary. The restaurant was very busy, we were greeted and shown to our table. The staff were very friendly, willing to have a friendly joke with you - but professional at all times. For starters we had a smoked salmon and a ham hock, whilst they did take a while to come, they were worth it. For mans we had a rib eye steak and turbot. The rib eye came with seasonal vegetables, when we ordered a side or green vegetables we weren't told that they would likely be the same - which indeed they were. We decided to have pudding as well, which were also nice.Overall the food was really nice and its easy to see how the Topiary's recent reviews are so good.Pricewise, with a bottle of wine the bill came to £98. This did include a service charge that they added at £9 (around 10%).

I visited this restaurant in May as I was booked into the hotel with my mum for her 50th Birthday. We had eaten in the restaurant for breakfast that morning and I had been suitably impressed with the choice and quality of the food. I was keen to see what the evening service would be like!We were booked in for around 7.30pm. The restaurant was quite quiet when we arrived, with only a few tables occupied. Most of those already in the restaurant were lone diners, who were obviously staying at the hotel on business trips (most had blackberry devices and laptops/paperwork out!). Nonetheless, we were not put off. Diners were spread throughout the restaurant, so you did not feel like you were sitting on top of one another, which I liked. We were greeted by the manager, I think his name was Christian (please forgive me if I have that wrong!). He was extremely pleasant and showed us to our table, about half way down the restaurant. He pulled out both chairs and, as we sat, he asked if he could get us anything to drink. We ordered our drinks, Christian checked if we were dining as part of the inclusive package with the hotel (which we were) and he went out to the bar for our drinks. In the meantime, another waiter brought over the menus. Christian soon returned with our drinks and left us to make our food choices. There was something for everyone on the menu and we were spoilt for choice. After a short wait, a waiter returned and asked if we were ready to order. Our order was taken swiftly and without problem, even though I wanted to change my potatoes on my main dish. I ordered the chicken and leek terrine to start while mum ordered the potted shrimp. For mains, we both ordered the local lamb with tender stem purple sprouting broccoli, creamed carrot and swede and dauphinoise potatoes, however, I asked if I could have fondant potato instead. This was not a problem and the waiter made a note of it. He asked how we would like our lamb cooked, mum went for well done and I opted for medium. We did not have to wait long for our starters to arrive and they were very tasty. Mum had never had potted shrimp before and really enjoyed it. The dish came with little toasted bits of bread. Although she enjoyed it, she didn't finish it as she said it was very rich due to the butter. My terrine was very nice, it had a very clean and delicate flavour, with just the right amount of chicken and leek to find a good balance of flavour. There was not a great deal of jelly, which was very pleasing, and it came with salad and wonderful dressing. Very nice!Plates were swiftly cleared away once we had finished, and we were asked if everything had been ok with the starters. More people arrived to dine and the restaurant began filling up. This gave it more of an atmosphere, which was really nice. Our main meals arrived in good time, however the potatoes had been put on the wrong plates. The young waiter returned to the kitchen with the meals and soon came back with the dishes corrected. The main meals were divine! The creamed carrot and swede was the perfect texture and flavour, my fondant potato was perfectly cooked and the lamb just melted in the mouth. Both dishes were cooked exactly as we had asked: my lamb was perfectly pink and mum's was well done without being tough. My mouth is watering just writing this as it was so tasty! Once finished, Christian returned and asked if we were finished and if everything had been ok. I joked and asked him if he had to ask, being as there were two empty plates on the table, he laughed and joked along. He was so pleasant. He cleared the table and soon approached and asked if we could fit in a dessert, mum was unsure if she could, but decided to look at the menu anyway. I was spoilt for choice with dessert. Mum immediately knew she wanted the Topiary Crème Brûlée, however, I was finding it difficult to decide between the Trio of Cherry dessert and the Lemon Soufflé. Christian approached and asked if he could take an order and I was still undecided, so I asked him just to bring me either and I would have a surprise. He joked and said that I was putting him under too much pressure and I had to promise that if I did not like what he chose, then I could not blame him. He was professional, but laid back and made us feel very welcome. He asked if we wanted anything else to drink, but we were fine with what we had (plus we had planned to sample to cocktails in the bar after dinner!).After a short wait our desserts arrived. Christian had chosen the Trio of Cherry desserts for me and he had chosen well! There was a cherry mille feuille, which was complied of two very thin pieces of shortbread sandwiched together with cream and cherries, then there was an extremely light cherry mousse, which worked beautifully with the compote that was smeared the full length of the plate, but the star of the show was the absolutely delicious cherry ice cream. Absolutely delicious! Mum's Crème Brûlée was delicious too, with just the right amount of burnt sugar on top. Half way through, Christian tentatively approached "checking" that he had made the right decision and when I confirmed he had, he wiped the back of his hand across his forehead and said "Phew!", which really made mum and I giggle. From start to finish, the meal was very tasty and delicious. We felt very welcome. It is clear that Christian runs a very tight ship, but he, and the rest of the staff, were laid back and relaxed and nothing was a problem for them. Yes, the restaurant appeared to be a little dated in decor, but the food is certainly worth seeing past that. I would have no problems in eating here again if I was in the area, even if I was not a guest of the hotel.By the time we had finished eating, the restaurant was quite full, with a large party dining. We ate here for breakfast on both mornings that we were at the hotel. Christian was there on the second morning (the night after we had dined there), he recognised us and joked with my mum, who asked him if he ever went home, and he said that he had, but only to change his shirt then had to come straight back for breakfast. It is clear that the restaurant also provides the breakfast and not bought in or made by other chefs etc, as it is of the same quality of the evening meals.A lot of people who have stayed at the hotel have actually reviewed this restaurant within their total review, so its worth having a look through The Park Royal reviews too. I hope more people review the restaurant separately as, on its own, it deserves the recognition!

It was a hotel meal in a traditional hotel resturant and couldnt be faulted, quite traditional and probably needs to come into this millenium, it is probably the sort of place my folks would have come for a treat and Im in my fifties! The hotel could do with modernising it and probably modernising the menu as well.

Ate here whilse staying at the adjoining hotel. Very pretentious, the food was pub standard at best and not worth he money. Would not eat there again - search out a pub nearby for the same standard or better at a third of the price.
