A friend, here on holiday from Wales, treated seven of us to Afternoon Tea at the Tontine ( Sadly, recommended by me) At £14 per head,it was a very poor show . Prosecco not included. Meagre fillings in sandwiches, disappointing cake selection.....and poorly presented. We had to ask for cream ( and more jam) Not everyone had a plate at their place setting. Never again!

The receptionist is very helpful. Food is amazing 👏 good quality on lunch. Breakfast no soo good, eggs is limited I think. Rooms are clean every day, but ... need more look for maintenance because is soo poor. Bathrooms are bad condition on old part, and some walls are falling apart in bedrooms. Floor is loud, and heard people next room because is hole between rooms door. Hotel is good for stay but price is little to much for one night.

Having just came from my Dads funeral last Thursday at 10 am, we decided to use The Tontine Hotel for morning tea afterwards. We were greeted at the front door by a young lady who led us straight into the large function room. What a service we got. Very relaxed, plenty of beautiful cakes, pastries, sandwiches and sausage rolls, even veggies ones too. Endless Tea and Coffee for everyone who came. There was no rush at all. We didn’t leave until after 2pm and even got boxes to take scones etc away with us. Keep up the good work McNelis Family, excellent attentive service as always. Thank You x

We were visiting Greenock and took 3 rooms over a weekend. The rooms are functional but probably could do with freshening to the standard of the rest of the hotel. We ate in the restaurant and had a evening meal which proved to be very good and we appreciated the 1/2 portions of several of the dishes served. The service of the hotel staff was excellent and we all enjoyed our stay.

Afternoon tea was shocking. Cheap Squeezy cheese, bread not buttered. No clotted cream for scones. The “cakes” were tiny and only 1 each (for 2 people) which meant 3 tiny bits per person. Certainly didn’t look like their advertised pictures online. They knew we were coming and hadn’t defrosted any clotted cream???? Bread still had crusts! The staff were pleasant enough, hence 2 stars not one. Given the cost this was certainly NOT value for money.

I got the recipe from a Spanish website for tapas. The phrase Pil Pil is from the Basque area of Spain and is synonymous with dishes cooked this way (oil, garlic and chilli) it is also onomatopoeia Pil Pil sounds like the sizzling that takes place when the garlic and Prawns are cooked away in the hot oil.

Having used this hotel for many years and local to our house we went along tonight 28, Oct for evening dinner After our starter mains arrived my wife s salmon and my gammon steak My wife said her salmon was undercooked and the waitress apologised and removed it to have it replaced By the time a fresh salmon appeared my food was finished I ate alone, now my wife would be doing the same,no chance as the second meal was as bad as the first Totally unacceptable ,not just once but twice having to return a meal!!! Certainly apologies were tendered and a complimentary drink delivered , a quiet Saturday evening ruined

We were staying with a friend in Greenock and was invited for the Festive meal. We ordered our starter and first course. The Salmon came and was excellent after they had cleared our plates we sat for some time and a member of staff came and asked us what we wanted for dessert. We said we would appreciate our mane course first. I ordered the Lamb Shank which was supposed to have Mashed Potatoes with Butter Beans, well They forgot to put any Butter beans in the Mash. The sprouts were cold and the dish was taken away when I told the waiter. When it came back the Lamb was tough and not at all what I expected. We had our plate cleared and was asked after about 10 minutes if we would like to have coffee to which we replied we would like our dessert first. I ordered the Apple Strudel which came out almost cold and by this time I was getting to feel sorry for our host as it was definitely after the starter a really bad experience. We were told on more than once they only had 1 chef on duty and had a big party in the Garden Room. I don't think this a a good reason for them to give Bad Service and 2 Bad courses to myself and another member of our party.

Attended for lunch for the second time this week as we were pleased with the macaroni cheese we had last time. We were both disappointed with the lasagne on this occasion. The dish was dried out with no gravy at all with the minced beef and the bechamel sauce, for what there was, was only on the top layer. The portions appeared to have been reheated with the result that the top two layers were hard and inedible. This must have been noticed by the person plating the meals before service. The saving grace was the pleasant and friendly staff. Overpriced for third rate food. The portions were pretty meagre too. Management should take note.

A lot of families use the tontine for family functions and funerals and the staff are very accommodating and friendly, you can also have a lovely meal and drinks and is reasonable price wise. Very central to Greenock town centre and approx a 10 minute walk to the main shopping centre, would definately reccomend the rooms which are spotless and really nice. My son had his wedding in the Tontine and one of the main courses was lamb, a meat you can hardly go wrong with. When I looked at the plates at the end of the meal, all I could see were piles of half chewed lamb and I knew why, as I had also had to remove the tough meat from my mouth and leave it on the side of my plate. I have also attended many funerals there and they have an awful habit of putting the cakes on the table and once everyone has finished with the cakes and sandwiches they appear with hot sausage rolls which, of course, no one wants having just eaten a cake. My niece complained and pointed out that it would really be a good idea to serve the sausage rolls before the cakes and she was told that that was how they had always done it and would continue to do it that way. Most folk are leaving as they are bringing in the sausage rolls, crazy! Generally speaking, this hotel is a hit or a miss, which is a great pity, as the facilities are good and the bar area and other function rooms have a great atmosphere, with a few changes and a higher standard of catering, it would be just great. I am attending another funeral there this week and I will be most interested to see if their routine has changed.....I hope so.

Had a family dinner recently and was very disappointed. This is my experience and some others in the group thought it was 'ok'. After ordering everyone received their starter except me. About 15 mins later after reminding the wait staff I received mine which was meant to be Blackened Cajun salmon skewer. There was no blackened anything and it had been sprinkled with some sort of spice. Worse of all was that the middle pieces on the skewer were completely uncooked. These were left on the plate and I wasn't asked if there was a problem with the food, which clearly there was as the uncooked food was there for all to see. It was clear that they had forgotten the order and tried to muddle something together at the last minute.

We have been to the Tontine a number of times over a number of years. The last time we had a bar meal and one of us had the scampi which was well over cooked. We mentioned it to the staff and got a non committal answer. The friends we stay with told us they have got a new chef and menu. We decided to give it a second chance and took our friends for dinner in the restaurant. I will say the starters we had were very good, when it came to the main courses 2 of the four ordered Breaded Haddock which came very over cooked and the Fish was very dry. One of the two managed to eat it just. The other one was sent back to the kitchen as it was inedible. When the replacement meal came out it was excellent. We were surprised that no member of staff came to ask how the meal was. We did ask the waitress why the first meal could not have been like the second one. Her reply was that's a question I can't answer. Unfortunately having two bad experiences it will be a long time before we go and have a meal in the Tontine again. There are a lot of good restaurants in the area to choose from so will take our custom else where.

I have not been to the restuarant for a meal, but I did attend a couple of private functions there, in the Adam suite and the Garden suite (with french doors leading to a small patio where pictures can be taken and the suites cater for 80 to 100 people. These suites are recently refurbished, are well decorated and have a nice cosy, warm ambience. There are a selection of private function menus to be chose from ranging from approx £18 to £25 per head., providing a range of starters, a selection of mains, at the higher end including rump steak, and a selection of sweets, plus tea or coffee! These mass servings are very well co-ordinated and efficient, no-one is rushed but there is no waiting on subsequent dishes. We have stayed at the Tontine Hotel many times and it has always been a good experience, however our last visit was very disappointing. The bed was extremely hard, the rooms excessively hot and the hotel was extremely noisy until 3am. While I understand there was a function, the hotel should have adequate sound separation. We could clearly hear a normal volume conversation in the next room. This was in the extension and we have previously stayed in the main hotel so the standards were well below our previous experience. It also wasn't possible to open a window to cool the room as there were staff smoking and talking loudly outside the window until 1am. We will not be returning.

Booked this hotel due to it's proximity to Greenock golf club where we were attending the function. Arrived around 4pm very easy check in, nice room very clean including shower and bath which was good. 2 single beds which I booked accidentally and I actually found the beds rather uncomfortable.Staff were very friendly with the exception of a young man in the bar when we returned to the hotel about 12.30am and decided on a nightcap. It was made obvious to us that it was an inconvenience and when my wife requested coffee she was bluntly told that the machine was switched off although it was displaying lights on it. Rather spoiled a pleasant evening. Breakfast next day was very good, plenty of choice, unlimited amounts and all cooked to a good standard. Check out was easy and speedy. I visited the restaurant on Friday 23rd June whilst visiting my 95 year old aunt as I have done for the last few years. She goes there with her family and feels comfortable there. She ordered the soup of the day (creamed veg) which she said was nice and I had the pate which also was also nice. We both settled on the TBone steak for mains which came on a (fancy?) wooden platter and I requested that my have hers served on a plate which they did no bother. BUT my steak though cooked as request medium was extremely stringy and I could only eat about half of the meat, and my aunt got through only about 25% of hers as it would not cut even though we had steak knives (I even tried to cut some up for her but with no luck) This was all bad enough but when they cleared the table I asked if they could show the chef and for him to let me know hi comments - after that nobody wanted to talk to us again, as I did not want my aunt upset we paid the bill and left. Also the lady on the table next to us has ordered a dessert with fresh cream which had chives in it. I will find somewhere with proper manners next time I am in Greenock.

From the nice people working at the front desk to the quaint way this place is laid out. The only draw back is no elevator/lift to get to the upper floors. And when you walk down the hall the floors do squeak but what do you expect from a Hotel this old. The rooms are very nice, beds sooo nice was easy to fall asleep. The restaurant has great food for good prices. Only thing is you get so much good food your eyes might be bigger then your stomach. Go down the steps outside and you can walk right into town. I've been a customer of the lounge for a long time, but last night's visit was fairly poor. The chips were cold, the macaroni was tasteless and very small. chips and salad sides were served in little tall dishes, making them very difficult to season. Wine wasn't chilled properly (to be fair this is a long term issue here and nothing new this evening). Then to top it off the bill was wrong. The staff were difficult to get hold of, which can be normal here too, but I normally put up with the service because I've enjoyed my food and the atmosphere. As a business which is trying to grow and open more facilities shortly I hope they can fix these issues.

We were on a cruise and docked at Greenock for the day and wanted to try a local eating place so we happened upon the Tontine Hotel and they were still serving lunch. We greatly enjoyed a nice lunch and some beer. The waitress and bar staff were very nice and helpful to us. My wife tried Hagis (?) and liked it. I didn't venture that far but did enjoy the entire lunch experience.

This has to be the worst hotel I have ever been too, we went to this hotel as a funeral party, we where told byThe manager lorna dochertie that they were no longer going to serve drink as we have been in long enough, when we asked for menus to order food we were told no, you have been in here since 1pm that is long enough and we are not going to serve you any food, the compassion from the hotel on an occasion like this is ridiculous, we will not be returning, we will also be letting relatives and friends know this is not an establishment that should be used for any occasions as the staff have no compassion, I am extremely upset with the way the staff have treated us on this sad occasion and we will never return to this establishment again, and everyone should know that that this is not a hotel that should be visited for any occasion.

Local family run business. Staff are all well presented and friendly. Great selection of food at very good prices. Rooms are quiet and clean. A popular and busy hotel with holiday makers and locals ensures a very warm and friendly atmosphere. Good public transport close by. Fantastic value

I was one of the organisers of the event on Sunday. The reason the service was a little slow was because a lot of people wanted special dietary meals which had not been preordered. The staff were spoken to in a very discourteous and ill mannered way.The meal was not £25. The event included a glass of wine on arrival. A three course meal. Tea coffee and home made tablet. A Piper. Entertainment from local pupils. One of the best guest speakers in Scotland. A gift from the list organisers. Programmes etc.All FOR £25 !!!!! The Management of the hotel and the organisers appreciate feedback but do not think the way to do this was by social media !This is a friendly family run hotel who provide a wonderful service to all of their customers and are a very repected organisation in our local community.

Friendly courteous staff and friendly atmosphere at Lasses Lunch on 15th May. Some people were not happy with their meal however the staff did everything they could to assist those with dietary requirements who had not advised the hotel or organisers in advance. This held the proceeding up a wee bit however the management and staff dealt with the situation courteously and efficiently.

Attended a lunch with 130 others on a Sunday. The meal was nothing short of shocking, cool soup allegedly Red Roast Pepper, clearly tomato soup with a few grains of black pepper!!I had a ham salad, well that's what the menu said in reality it was processed ham, salad leaves and cold chips with some potato salad. I had to request a dressing and packets of mayonnaise appeared. Pavlova (oh no it wasn't) followed. No alternative I was advised, I complained further and received biscuits and cheese. The service was shoddy, only four waitresses serving and usually one plate at a time. The meal was an hour late in starting and we waited 45 minutes between courses. This meal was £25. Not worth anything like it, daylight robbery in my opinion.None of my company were pleased with the meal or the service, indeed no one will ever visit this hotel again. The least the hotel could do was refund the organisers.

The rooms here are comfortable, the bathrooms modern. Good value for money. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. I requested some skimmed milk and the receptionist called one of the staff who was on his / her way in to get it for me - exceptional personal service.

Well used by families for the passing of loved ones. There are not a lot of options. It is also used by local groups as a meeting place well known throughout Inverclyde.

Good reception with polite, helpful staff. Room was of a good standard and seemed fresh and new. My wife and I booked dinner having read recent reviews. The food was exceptional and the staff could not have been more helpful. This is a great hotel. Not sure what the official star rating is but the standards are very high.

My husband treated me to a Valentine's meal in the tontine and I have to say the food was excellent. We arrived and seated promptly and given a complimentary glass of bubbly. It was a 3 course set menu for £19.95 great value considering how delicious the meal was , I picked the steak and my husband the pork belly....yum but the desserts stole the show!!! Service was attentive and staff extremely friendly we will definitely be back

We used to visit the Tontine hotel regularly for tea at the weekends, it was always great, never a disappointing meal. Recently the menu has changed, as have the staff and it is nowhere as good as it used to be. We will not be visiting again after this evenings visit. It's a real shame.

Has the misfortune to eat here last Friday. Notices on entry doors advised that only the Christmas set menu was available. There was a party night in full swing in the main hall. We only wanted to sit in the lounge bar area so this as not a problem. Our order was taken approx 15minutes before the end of service. The meal started well, the lentil soup was delicious, the melon nice and the hot smoked salmon plentiful. It went downhill from there. Three of our party ordered turkey, one was having braised steak (£2 extra). Portion sizes were very small, served with a handful of veg and ONE piece of roast potato. We complained to our waitress who informed us that we knew we were ordering the set menu and nobody else had complained! We asked for more potato.....she reluctantly came back with a small bowl with FIVE pieces of almost burnt roasties between the four of us. Dessert was a disappointment too.......two of us had Christmas Pudding with brandy custard - it was a very thin slice of pud and about two dessert spoonsful of the sauce. The other two in the party had the home made shortbread option, again the portion size was extremely small. Again we spoke to the waitress who said, that's the way it's bought in! So much for home made. Don't get me wrong, what we had was tasty enough but despite not being big eaters (all women) we could have done with bigger portions. Lord help us of a hairy assed man was served that size of meal. It was not a cheap meal and, had the portions been a bit bigger, would have been reasonable value, given the time of year. Overall, very disappointing performance from an old favourite

The food is very good and the service first class, I eat in the Tontine every Tuesday at lunchtime with my fellow Rotary members and the staff are great. The bed rooms are smart and well maintained, the lounge is comfortable with a good bar and the best latte coffee anywhere. At present there is a great deal of alterations in progress but they do not cause any problems.
