Toby Carvery in Colchester

I go 4 times a week because I get a discount. The food is hot, tasty and plentiful. The staff are lovely and nothing is too much trouble even in busy times.

Amazing experience our server Joe was so lovely she made the day with my grandparents that even more special! We will definitely be coming back :)

We had just checked into a local hotel and with our two kids thought we would try out this carvery. We arrived at about 18.00hrs, the moment we walked in there was smell of stale beer and drink, probably soaked into the carpet. The not so keen lady on the front desk said that there were no tables available, so we were asked to sit by the bar if we wanted to wait. We went for a look, in that area, there were about 20 tables, every one of them full up with plates, glasses and partly eaten food from the previous dinners. We left and walked across the road to another restaurant. The reception, the mess and the smell meant we were put of returning throughout the week. Shame because I enjoy a carvery.

Atmosphere could have been better no Christmas music playing, we waited a long time for preordered starters as were people sitting close to us who all started to complain to the Staff. After getting starters they were very poor not worth the wait , Carvery and sweet was good usual Toby Standard . Staff were very busy but still polite and courteous

3rd may came in the evening for my sons 12th birthday. Amy was very helpful and very polite! Entertained my 3 boys and was just genuinely helpful and respectful.

Good quality roast dinners. Often, it gets busy, but online booking is easy to navigate. The car park is fairly small but does have wheelchair spaces. There is an overflow carpark nearby. My only criticism of the place is the very tiny accessible toilet

We have been to the White Hart Toby Carvery many times, we came for Mother’s Day and the atmosphere was lovely even though it was busy. The staff were still in a great mood, happy and joking with us at the table. It made the day even better. Then we visited again today (Monday) it wasn’t as busy but the food was still great. The staff were more than happy to make our experience great. They went above and beyond with our “special request”. I’d like to make a special mention about Jess, Tiana and Titch who made it extra special. Thank you so much, it really does make a meal out better when the staff are so great. We will be visiting again and again.

Went for Mothers Day today. All the staff in every department were absolutely professional, polite and extremely helpful and i must say the food was cooked beautifully and tasted really nice My only disappointed was that we were in a group so a few went to get served and the others waited to look after all the bags etc. When the first few got back after 20 minutes and the rest of us went up we had 23 people in front of us and took 30 minutes to be served and when we got back we were eating on our own. Needs to be sorted out surely as afternoon was spoilt unfortunately

Came here for my son’s birthday.. food was delicious and the waitress Jo was lovely and the level of service was amazing and assisted with food allergy we had with one member in the family. Would recommend to anyone to come here. Will come again many thanks!!

Brought my dad here for a birthday treat. The food was absolutely amazing we sometimes go to Braintree but stanway is so much better. The service from jo was also 10 out of 10

Customer service was shocking, we asked to move as it was far too hot where we were sat, and they got funny with us, food quality was disgusting , raw potatoes hard cauliflower. Temperature of the restaurant is way to hot.

Very busy Sunday, Jo was great she was very interactive and gave us great service throughout our are dinner.

food was lovely, however hadn’t booked and walked in and was told it’s super busy, however there was a table in the bar bit which we could still go to and get food however we would have a waitress. We sat down and thought to book for 17:50 as we wanted to sit in the restaurant part, I informed the waitress who was at the welcome desk and was met with 2 very rude ladies who said “well I told you not to book as we are behind, why did you book” we decided to just eat our carvery at the bar section, however one of the ladies ( blonde one) then approached us and said “oh did you decide to eat your carvery here then” we replied with “yes thank you” she then replied in a very rude, nasty tone “well I’ve been shouting your name for ages” we said “sorry we didn’t hear you shouting for us” she walked off without saying anything. Felt like I was being told off for wanting to eat here. Was very disappointed. I work in hospitality and know how stressful it is when busy however customer service skills should be the main priority. Having manners doesn’t cost anything. You never know what people are going through. I went for dinner with my friend after a 10 hour shift at work and was met with a rather horrible experience wish I never spent my money here.

Came for a last-minute dinner on a Sunday evening. The food was good, although beef a little dry and they had run out of some food items (parsnips) it was still very tasty! I was very impressed with the our server, Joanne! She was very friendly and attentive, nothing was too much trouble. Its been a while since I have had such great service from any restaurant.

Lovely staff, decent priced carvery. Menus were a little confusing if this is your first time, things could be grouped together and made more apparent on the menus

As a family of 10 we pre-booked . Upon arrival the car park was packed . Nowhere to park and people abusing the blue badges spaces. One person left so we could park .. The table was shoved in a corner . With no room for the entire family and 2 with mobility issues . Cannot go up the one step . Table was rearranged and we was moved but had to sit at seperate tables . Food was lovely . Very busy and packed .

Most of it was cold the chef had a job to cut meat it will be a long time before I go back again I find the Toby has gone down hill

Very disappointed 😞 I have always enjoyed going for breakfast here. the bacon was like chewing leather.. an most of the food was cold .. plates included 😞 the welcome was good though.. sadly won't be back

We went here today for a family meal and everyone enjoyed their food especially the children !. The waitresses were very attentive and quickly topped up gravy and other dishes that were empty or low. Waiters/waitresses were also very polite but only thing we did notice was service was quite slow however, this was not the fault of the waitresses as they did appear to be very busy. We will definetly be back and this Toby Carvery is a great asset to the area.

Emma was kind friendly and welcoming, the food was hot and delicious, highly recommended this restaurant to anyone.

I'm disappointed with this Toby Carvery. The waitress who sat us down placed us between two tables with young children, one was crying, the other was screaming, and one of the parents was smacking his lips to point you could here it across the restaurant. We asked to be sat at another area and the waitress said she only had this table and another one closer to the screaming child, despite the restaurant being close to empty. The table we were sat at had food all over the floor meaning we could not put our bags down, so my wife asked for a broom to sweep up with. Luckily the waitress took the initiative and kindly swept up all of the food on the floor for us but at this point we still hadn't sat down and she asked us what we would like to drink. We politely stated we hadn't looked at the menu yet. After we sat down, we saw the same waitress seat a couple down where we requested to sit, so our table wasn't actually the only table available. The cutlery we were given was not clean and we went to get others from another table which were also not clean. Service from this particular waitress was terrible and i wish we had walked out. But the roasties were calling. Other than that, the different waitress who served us was nice and the food was good which save this review from a single star.

We had a lovely time. The only thing I could comment on was the lighting could be a bit brighter and better.

I have been to this branch so many times and always enjoy the visit and the food but never seen something so disgusting as this before and other dinners commented on this as well at time of visit. I know you get contractors coming in for breakfast but there 3 who came in and one in particular was in such a mess, he's clothing was caked in mud,dirt,paint and possibly dog sh*%t for all i know and was let in to go to the buffet!!!!!! if i turned up without a shirt on i would hopefully be turned away. This is unacceptable and glad i wasn't the only one who said they would complain. Could not find anyone on the way out to complain to.

Our waitress Emma was lovely, very attentive. Food lovely as usual. Only issue I had was, we were sat next to the toilets which wasn’t nice everytime someone came out. And that end was cold and the fire was not lit
