Three Pigeons Inn in Denbighshire

Literally stumbled across this gem of a place after a day out. Nik was a fantastic host, the pub is welcoming and cosy and the food is out of this world. Traditional German meals that are absolutely huge!! Would go out of our way to visit again.

What a pub! We found this pub on Google when looking for somewhere for lunch while visiting the area, and it absolutely did not disappoint! The pub is in a beautiful location with ample parking, and is full of really amazing stuff! Nik the owner was so interesting to chat to - he’s had an amazing past driving some of the biggest bands in the world! His wife (I didn’t catch her name) is German and cooks the most incredible authentic German food with large homely portion sizes. I don’t think I’ve ever had such good German food - even in Germany! We are not from the area but will absolutely be visiting again in the future! What a brilliant find!

We had a fantastic time at this pub! The atmosphere inside is very inviting with lots of cool stuff on the walls and comfy chairs, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal. We were impressed with the German food on offer. I had the pork schnitzel with chips, which was cooked to perfection - crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. My partner opted for the foot-long currywurst, and it was equally impressive. The portions are very generous, and the food quality is outstanding. Everything was cooked from scratch and tasted fresh and delicious. If you're looking for a place with great vibes and excellent food, this pub is a must-visit!

My husband and I stayed at Three Pigeons with our 2 year old son. We stayed above the pub in the Hillfort apartment, for five nights Monday - Friday. We are yet to check out, but we have a busy Saturday/Sunday coming up and I didn't want to forget to leave a review (guilty of doing this too often). The apartment is perfect for what we needed, and much bigger than expected. We have stayed in a lot of Sykes/Cottage stays, and we can say it is very fairly priced. There's a shared balcony with the apartment next door. The gorgeous views were worth braving the cold, we sat out and watched a few sunsets. The apartment is in a perfect location to explore lots of national trust days out (we went to Chirk castle), and it's a scenic drive to Chester Zoo/Cheshire Oaks. The pub below is gorgeous, you won't find many pubs like this that still look and feel like a pub. This one has kept all its charm, we haven't been in a pub like this since we were both kids. On the hosts we simply couldn't have felt more comfortable and welcome. Nik and Julie just left us to our stay after showing us round the apartment which is exactly how we like things, but they were also really easy to contact. After contacting the Landlord before our stay about my husband having coeliac disease, sure enough gluten free beers were waiting for him. We sat next to the fire when we arrived, and just felt like we could have sat there all night! Our son was let to have a little toddle around the pub with no issue, and gave the landlady Julia lots of hugs. Which he doesn't do often! Again, this just made us feel very comfortable. It makes such a difference to our trips away when our son is treated well, it was actually a highlight for us. We would come back again next weekend! However we are going to wait till after I've given birth, so I can have a proper drink! My husband can do the parenting for one night! Do give the pub a visit if you're passing Friday-Monday, or even better...just stay a few nights so you can stagger to bed! Thank you Nik & Julia xx

Loved our visit here last night. Not just the food, but the experience as a whole. A warm welcome with fun banter and chat throughout the night. Great selection of drinks including of course some German beers on tap. Sat right next to the cost fire. HUGE food portions, but so damn tasty and fresh, absolutely first class. So nice to be able to go out and eat something different. I grew up eating German food so this was a real treat. Finished the night with a cocktail and testing each other with one of the quiz books. Perfect! Shame we are not local, whenever we are in the area we will be back. 10/10

What a brilliant find! Struggled to find somewhere to eat out with friends within the Ruthin area in the evening. Discovered this place. In spite of staff difficulties a superb meal was served up. Would definitely go again and would recommend it to anyone. The landlord and his wife were great, good fun.

Our daughter and I stayed at The Three Pigeons for a week in June. The room was very good for a home base as we explored the ancestral homeland. The view is great from the balcony. The Sauerbraten was fantastic! And Sunday roast was equally good. Nick and Julia may not win Innkeeper of the year but, they are good folks with stories to tell and the tenacity to keep a rural Inn open in the worst of times! Thanks for being there!

Obnoxious, unruly and not very hospitable. With the pantomime season fast approaching, one can only hope that they get rid of the big Turkey behind the bar! The one Saint Nick that nobody wants to see this Christmas. Speaking of Christmas, I’ve had better German sausage at the market.

After reading that terrible, unjust review I feel compelled to comment. Nick and Julia are amazing and yes, different, hosts who are friendly and welcoming and funny. They are managing to maintain a thriving business when other village pubs are being lost by virtue of their hard work, superb food and drink. Goodness knows what the attitude of that particular customer was like for them to have felt that way, but 'do as you would be done by' springs to mind! Frightened their child?? There are way scarier things in this world, get a grip. They also need to. use punctuation correctly and. construct coherent sentences. Keep up the good work 'Pigeons' and see you soon.

My sister and have been. Twice this year for 3 nights in the rooms, and will defiantly return .Food was good and and very nicely presented. We are both appalled at review posted on Sept 2023 by Forest T. Nick was very accommodating and very friendly. He has his own image which is little different. We are all different and should respect others as the are. Keep up the good work Nick

Cannot rate. it was worse than horrible. The experience was shockingly horrendous. We stopped in for drinks and food after a long day spent in Ruthin. The owner was aggressive, intimidating and antagonistic towards us and all we didn't even get to finish telling him our order. He frightened my young child. We had no choice but to leave. It was bizarre. I would stay far away from this place. Especially if you have children. The cursing also was not something we wanted to be around. It was intimidating and worse than no hospitality, he was hostile. We quietly walked out and will never return again.

This is a amazing pub if you are local to Ruthin area, the food smells great I would definitely recommend this pub if you are a big fan of German food and lager

Went for lunch. I've always been a fan of German food and it was a delight to find a place selling it on our doorstep. Great bit of banter with the landlord. Lovely bloke. My girlfriend had an imported german beer shandy (reminded me of a radler I had in Munich) and I had a pepsi to start. We manged to get a table for food despite not booking. We sat outside with a beautiful view of the valley. I ordered the schitzel and my girlfriend had the pretzel wth mustard and salami. Both were delicious. Very authentic, not surprisng seeing as the chef is German. Couldn't rate the place more. Will definitely be going back to try something else on the menu. Not had currywurst in a while ;-)

Food here is top notch. We have eaten schnitzel in the best rated German restaurant in cologne and the Three Pigeons knocks the socks off it. This place is a hidden gem and a must visit for quality food and a nice pint.

Went for Sunday lunch and it was amazing I had the two meat choice Beef and Turkey this came with roast potatoes, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding, and gravy, then the veg arrived WOW there was everything you could want, well worth a visit enjoyed every mouth full.

What an interesting little find! We used trip advisor to find somewhere on our route home and this place came up. On entering, it’s an old tradition pub, lots of dark furniture and various memorabilia on the walls. We were given a warm welcome. The menu was interesting… mainly German dishes although there were English meals and a kids menu available. We went for a Camembert dip to start then 2 German dishes. (Sorry I can’t remember names) but as other reviewers have said, they were huge! They were delicious but we couldn’t finish them. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby, dogs are welcome and it looks like there are some lovely walks nearby although we didn’t try any.

We decided to book a table here as we were visiting Ruthin and saw that it was dog-friendly. It is in a beautiful, quiet setting with stunning views and has a car park which is free to use for patrons. We took the opportunity to walk the dogs for a couple of miles in the nature reserve opposite, before entering the pub for some food and drink. Both of these were spot on. I tried the Hobgoblin session IPA and Butcombe ale which were both great. My wife had a lime and soda and a glass of Malbec, which was very nice indeed. We shared a starter of Pretzel Breads with Salami and Mustard. My main was the Pork Schnitzel and my wife had the Cheese and Pork Wurst with mash and sauerkraut. All of the food was just perfect. The portions were huge and the quality was spot on. It was all delicious and we were very pleased. I would say it was great value for money. The inside of the pub was large, yet very cosy feeling and the decor was both traditional, welcoming and full of character and stories. The owners are also very welcoming and have stories to tell too! I wish we had been able to stay longer, but we will definitely return for the food, drink, atmosphere and chat. What a find!!! Oh, and Cheesy Madam is something you'll just have to ask the owner about!

Was recommended to us by nearby caravan park. What a brilliant find this is. We took the dog with us and no problems at all indeed the welcome the dog got equalled our own!! Food really good with huge portions. So all this added to good beer what more could one ask for?

This was my very first lockdown take out and I was not disappointed. The steak was cooked to perfection and I will need the recipe for the pepper sauce as that really made the meal special.The new management were so friendly and I really could have stayed chatting all evening but I was hungry and the contents of the bag smelt so good!I will certainly be returning again for a take out but can hardly wait for lockdown to be over so I can explore the building as it looks beautiful and the new owners have been making many improvements. Absolutely delicious vegan roast to take away! So nice to have somewhere local that caters for all diets...Definitely worth talking to them as they had quite a few more options than what's shown on the menu. Nothing is too much trouble and very reasonably priced. Hopefully lockdown will be lifted soon so we can enjoy eating in the lovely restaurant...Until then the take away hits the spot! Stayed in the apartment above the pub for a week ,spotless and well equipped ,in a great location a short drive to places of interest Pub has a good selection of real ales and the food served was fantastic absolutely no negatives at all Owners are friendly and looked after us very well Will definitely return in the future :-)

We have been regular patrons of the Three Pigeons for many years and were keen to visit again after the trauma of the fire and Covid lockdown. We were actually there on the second evening of food being served. We had two courses and all the dishes were very good indeed. Service , as ever, was very good and attentive. The food is restaurant standard but with prices to match. We just hope the new owners maintain the high standards and don’t spoil the lovely quaint ambience of the pub. It’s a rare gem in the area as lots of pubs and restaurants seem to have closed in recent years.

Although the kitchens are closed for refurb right now, the atmosphere and ambience here are great, Paul & Debbie run a tight ship and the pub is full of character and is a welcome on a Sunday afternoon in the winter with its roaring fires and excellent menu, some fine dining or bar snacks, and a superb range of ales and wines to choose from, and on top of this they have letting rooms available

Been there a few times a bit of a hit and miss not very friendly landlord a bit offish after all we were paying customers miss a meal out had to wait arrived when everyone else had finished. Maybe they have changed the staff and cook ?

The pub is charming with friendly staff and decent wines/beers. The kitchen was out of action when we visited because of a recent fire I was told. The associated campsite is a simple field with a tap. However, campers can use a single shower/toilet in the pub itself with a separate door to it (£5 key deposit). The campsite is unlikely to improve as the field is for sale with planning permission for 10 holiday chalets.

Having a trip out spotted this In and stopped for a lunch and we were very pleased we did . on entering we were greeted by two lovely Ladies who seated us and presented us with a selection of menu's . As we are small eaters we decided the two course meals would sort us and plumped for fish and chips and sausage and mash . Both were freshly cooked and were presented with fresh veg and both piping hot . We were placed in the dining room ,very old and tastefully furnished with very quiet music of Nat King Cole in the far background , but they have a lovely balcony where you a can sit in the sunlight and view the country side. We then had a lovely sweet . It was a wonderful afternoon out and there was only one draw back my Wife wants to do it EVERY WEEK now. Congratulations to the Chef and the two ladies who looked after us , That's how dining should be! ! !

Booked a table for Sunday lunch on short notice - they could only offer us the bar which was fine as we had our 6 year old granddaughter with us Our son is a celiac and has a severe reaction to gluten. The staff are well versed in what they can offer which was brilliant for him. The food was excellent even our fussy granddaughter who ate off the child’s menu cleared her plate. Lovely pub and restaurant area with a superb view. The pub has lots of cosy areas to sit and have a drink or meal. The food was superb with a variety of choice on offer from light bites to 'Hearty Mains'. Good prices and friendly staff. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. I booked the pub for my birthday meal with a group of friends. When we got there they had put up ballons and a birthday banner. What a lovely surprise and my friends loved it. We had a lovely meal and lots of drinks so a good night was had by all.

Out of the way and a good find. Nice friendly atmosphere and the food was really good for Sunday lunch. Plenty of room, went as a party of 14. Would recommend if in the area.

We attended for Mother’s Day. Absolutely faultless from start to finish. Paul and Debbie and their staff couldn’t have been nicer. Food and setting was sublime, as always. Best roast dinner (vegetarian) I’ve eaten. We were amazed when the told us they’d done 250 covers that day. The staff were so friendly and the food was so well cooked and presented. Best pub food for miles and miles around.

Great venue for Sunday lunch. A good varied menu delivered without fuss and very promptly. The food was freshly cooked, plentiful and with fresh local ingredients and very tasty.

My husband and I stopped for lunch whilst staying at nearby Ruthin. The menu offered a fantastic selection of meals. I had a game and field mushroom pie whilst my husband chose the Cajun chicken. The dining area was cosy and very original. The pub had a wonderful friendly atmosphere, equipped with a pool table and various nooks and crannies to appeal to all types of patrons. I would recommend a visit.
