Perfect place for family dinner or lovely evening

Visited with friends for a charity quiz night. Excellent food from a very varied menu (steak and kidney pie was delicious), great selection of beers (London Pride on draught very drinkable). The landlord/quizmaster is very friendly and welcoming. The quiz was rather challenging. The raffle prizes were numerous and generous. A thoroughly enjoyable evening and I'd recommend visiting.

Lovely staff great all you can eat chicken wings

Some staff were rude, unattentive and abrupt, service was dreadful. Apart from the house burger, the food was average at best. Roast was cold, fish dry and inedible. Very disappointing

Very slow service, tables squished together so you feel as though you’re sitting on top of the people on the next table. Burger was good, fish and chips dry, roast decent. Ordered orange juice that tasted gone off or like pure cordial. Wrong drinks came several times. Coffee machine broken. Overall not great for the price but not the worst pub.

Nothing was too much trouble. We didn't book just turned up after a game of golf . There was 10 of us . Had a lovely lunch. We will be back soon.

We had a slight issue with our food and the manager immediately sorted it out gave us a refund a free drink and sorted the food we could not have asked for more the food was amazing the atmosphere was extremely pleasant in the sunshine all in all it was a luffly visit to the pub and we will definitely be returning and recommending it to others

I was served a very large plate of food, it tasted good but the amount put me off as I didn't really want to waste any, but I did.

Sunday lunch today, absolutely amazing! From the warm welcome, to the attentive staff topped off with the amazing food. Book up, go and enjoy. Very highly recommend (especially the Sunday roast!)

They did very politely seat us when we came in with 8 people for a reservation of 5, but the rest of the experience was mediocre. Food took ages to come and not all the orders were correct. Jerk chicken and Caesar salad were cheap ingredients for the price, extremely disappointing.

A good portion of roast and lots and lots of gravy. But it was all a little bit cold and some of the veg could do with a little more cooking. The crackling was far too hard and came late. So close to being really good. The fish and chips was good though, according to the OH.

Stopped on a long journey home because I was so thirsty. The lady behind the bar couldn't have been nicer and more attentive. It was only a fleeting visit, but I was made to feel so welcome, not something that happens all the time to single women. Will definitely be popping in again.

Lovely food quick and friendly service

One of my favourite places for Lunch, food is very good, I can recommend the sausage baguette and a good menu to choose from. Summer is coming, a good option for Lunchtime, improving every time we visit.

Reading my mind he 'of course you can stay the night'. We had a few rounds of drinks with him and 2 of his lovely customers Lucy and Harry. Lovely quaint English pub in lovely village surroundings not far from Epping High Street. We had a lovely quiet lunch - the salmon with boiled new potatoes, cabbage and green beans, all cooked beautifully and perfectly seasoned (it came with so much veg, perfect! Polite and chatty service, very attentive, would go back maybe for the Sunday Roast or to try the pie!

The last time I was in this pub was in 1974 when I lived and worked on Hobbs Cross Farm. Any way I was visiting my parents grave in Epping with my brother. We decided to have lunch here and the staff were really friendly, the service was excellent and the food great. Next time we are down will definitely be back, thank you 😊👍

My colleague at work invited me for a country walk and Sunday pub roast, and being from Australia I couldn't have had a better experience at the Theydon Oak in Epping. The Sunday roast was delicious, great portion and value for money. The pub itself was quintessentially British and a great country pub for every occasion with the loveliest staff. Would recommend to any local or visiting patron.

Had to send mine back it was horrible. hubbies' fish batter was dark brown, not a lovely golden colour. Service was really bad, slow, and uncaring. It was busy but not friendly

Pleasant atmosphere, great food what more could you want.

Myself and a group of friends went there for a meal. We ordered Sea Bass, accompanied by potatoes and salad. The potatoes were unedible, owing to the fact they were rock hard. My husband (who was having steak).also tried cutting them 'with his steak knife' and barely made a dent in them. When I returned them, the cook said 'l am doing my best' !! Where I realise that these things happen sometimes, when I complained to the manager, she said 'yes I know, we are going to be making a complaint'. I don't know where to, the farmer ? The fact that the potatoes weren't cooked for long enough, didn't seem to occur to them. 'Not a sorry, or any offer of a discount was offered'. I needed to eat, as I have Type 1 Diabetes. Overall, very unprofessional and a good meal spoilt.

First came into the pub, had to wait to be served, got tired of waiting after 20minutes so went to the bar to order.. lady behind the bar was rude when i asked to order, payed alot for a meal with 4 people, and 5 minutes after ordering I asked for a receipt of the purchase but was refused as "other transactions" had been made after wIth card payment, so they cant find and print it now.. After the food finally arrives, my mum ordered a leg of welsh lamb, which is not what arrived at all.. drinks they had forgot to bring over we had to go back up to the counter and remind them! hugely disappointed and terrible service. and the lady behind the bar is just plain simple rude. TOTALLY AVOID GOING TO THIS PLACE , DONT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY.

Great village pub with live music and monthly events. A warm and friendly family run business. Highly recommend the live music evenings and cider festivals that are held here.

Food was lovely but service was awful. Left us sitting there for 45 minutes and no-one came over and asked us if we wanted desserts or more drinks and when we did ask we were told no cause the next sitting wss coming in which we was not told about and then had the cheek to charge us service charge which we asked them to remove. It's a shame cause food was really nice but will not return

Unfortunately the place could not cope with the amount of people in our group not sure about anyone else. We had desserts and they were pretty much carried to our table one at the time at various intervals. Also one of the people at out table had some sauce or gravy spilt over her jumper not sure if that was sorted thru the bill or otherwise but wouldn't go there again .

Great food and amazing serving staff.

We went for a late lunch in Saturday 07th October. Very busy due to the sun being out but easy enough to get an outside table. We ordered Fish & Chips and Pork Belly. Both meals were excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed them. A great venue serving very good food - well worth the visit

Friendly staff, live band was entertaining, pub smelt like dog, and the beer choice is abysmal. Hi editing my review for ian, yes it was the right pub, I watched a Ska band in your pub a couple of weeks back, yes you have some ales, (some in boxes, not great, and some from the poor Brentford brewery) but having 9 ales doesn't mean having a good choice of beer, time has moved on since the 90s, when fosters, Guinness and some ales signified a good choice of beer. And sorry wooden floors or not the pub smelt like wet dog, just my opinion. UPDATE: Better choice of beer now definitely improved.

Very pleasant, well presented pub. Menu isn’t very varied but the food served was very tasty. Staff were friendly. Slightly on the pricy side, but prices have gone up everywhere so it’s not dramatically so. Nice for a treat.

Cant fault this quality proper pub. Food and service were great. Good selection of real ales on, though it would of been nice to see a local beer on (small thing). Fantastic to have a kids play area on hand to plus a nice outdoor space.

Love this amazing village pub - food always top notch and the playground is superb. Staff always so friendly and welcoming - even my kids love going there. I dread going for dinner with my kids but at The Theydon Oak I enjoy it! Would highly recommend to anyone.

Well worth the walk I only had one pint but it was well kept and reasonably priced.

4 of us and the dog for an evening meal for my wife's birthday. Very friendly place and sat in the bar to eat. Slightly reduced menu due to chef problems but still enjoyed the food we had. Would definitely go again.

Excellent food , amazing staff, I couldn't recommend this pub enough . Fish and Chips was unreal 🤤, can't wait to come back.

We were with family some of which were children so we sat in the playground and had food there. Everybody enjoyed the food and the children were happy as they could play whilst the adults chatted..will return again.

Food was lovely, just a touch more seasoning. But overall great Sunday lunch.

Wonderful country pub with a good range of beers.

Nice pub and beer. The woman serving was very rude so we didn't stay for long. I was told the rude lady is called Anne. Normally the staff are very friendly so this was a surprise.

Absolutely impressed by the place. Staff friendly helpful and cherry. The food was delicious with very generous proportions. The place was very very busy when we visited and soon discovered why.. Recommend you try it yourselves

Good unpretentious food, cooked and seasoned well. It was lovely to turn up late after calling ahead and get a really warm welcome from the young women at the bar. They are a credit to the owners. The table next to us were pretty rowdy and that, combined with the music from the kitchen made it difficult to hear our conversation BUT the way the pub looks, covered in brasses, pans and all sorts of old English objects, together with the general atmosphere made it a genuinely happy visit. Would definitely recommend and we'll be back on the way to Norfolk from London.

Visited over bank holiday weekend. Entertainment laid on outside, hog roast, hot food & snacks. Artisan beers, ales & ciders. Great friendly atmosphere in the sunshine 🌞

Went to the beer festival, but as the allocated driver I had one beer before going on to soft drinks. But my husband injoy the beers. They were very nice. The outdoor barbecue was good. The young lady running around picking up glass where on the ball. But overall a very nice pub. We will be popping back soon.

We had a really great roast lunch on Easter Sunday, and it was done with a welcome smile and extra gravy, for free. Awesome and the roast potatoes were brilliant. Highly recommend this business. We were walking and it was such a welcome respite and repast.

Very nice inside with a lovely play area outside for the kids. Ordered a pork roast which was served without crackling but when requested was brought out with no issues. Slightly disappointed in the roast potatoes but it was a decent meal.

If I could rate this zero stars I would. The food was poor and the service was even worse. Would never return due to their rudeness even if I was paid too! By far the worst place I have been too - avoid.

Love this place, but the food was a big disappointment, A Sunday set menu, which was fine so we had a roast , with seasonal veg, red cabbage and green cabbage. The parsnips was undercooked and the roast potatoes was burnt, the food wasn't very hot. Disappointing for the price.

Booked a table for the 8 th February for myself and a friend . Didn’t realise food was half price on a Wednesday. It was specials only so much choice. I had prawn cocktail followed by cottage pie big portions all fresh and delicious . Lovely pub lovely atmosphere. Staff made you very welcome especially Robbie. Will definitely be going back

Nice pub, Sunday lunch is great size but unfortunately some of the food was like warm and beef slightly overcooked for my taste. Saying that would try again as it was authentic cooked food rather than preprepared.

As we are retired, we like a bargain, Monday and wensday lunch, half price ,always a fine selection of beers and ciders ,very pleasant Staff, nice old English pub, one of my favourite.

It has improved so much! We stopped going there a few years ago as the food and friendliness just wasn't up to scratch. Now, happy efficient staff and super tasty and varied affordable food. Really is! Will be our regular meeting place in the future!
