2 night stay in a fabulous room. Spotless and everything thought of. Comfy bed and great bathroom and lovely breakfast basket. ......but.... First night there was a karaoke, we were ok with that in the room below us...finished at a reasonable hour. Second night a party.... At 12.40am the volume was reduced but continued on beyond 3am really not ok.....

Stayed at the woolpack a couple of times over the past year & it seems to have a new team of staff-landlady. i can honestly say what a difference to this lovely place it’s had some good changes. very good choice of ales & beers. unfortunately the kitchen is closed but near by restaurants of your choice. The rooms never disappoint clean crisp sheets & comfy beds. Always a nice stay in this beautiful building.

We have just returned home from celebrating a friend's birthday at the Woolpack where we were one of the lucky couples staying the night. The team here were friendly, welcoming, hugely hospitable and honestly could not do enough for us. Beautiful quaint rooms, comfy beds with crisp linen and spotlessly clean. If you are in the area or need a place for a small event, look no further.

Place we had booked had no car park & no street space so we happened on The Woolpack instead. Lovely old building, genuine, warm welcome from staff and a nice outside area (sadly too cold for us to to use it). Limited beer & food choice due to a big festival in the town the day before but we all enjoyed our burger, sandwiches & loaded fries. Only tiny complaint is that the prawns could have been drained longer as sauce was a tad watery. Lovely smiley folk and proper filling food - what else do you need? We would all go back.

Had really mixed reviews of the Woolpack. First time I went the food was excellent (although the dog that lives there did pee on my jacket)… I then returned in summer with my family and had the most indescribably horrible kebab of my life. My partner and I live locally and I’d been wanting to check out this pub for a while, as it looks so stunning from the outside with beautiful gardens. We went for a Sunday roast recently and I was quite taken aback by how basic and unloved it was inside. The landlady was friendly but the service from the wait staff was incredibly slow even though there were only a couple of tables occupied. My partner had the beef roast and I had the chicken. The portions are HUGE and they give you extra gravy without asking for it, which is a massive plus point. My chicken was pretty nice but the potatoes and veg were absolutely delicious. My partner said his beef was quite tough and he didn’t enjoy it. After we’d finished our meal we must have waited over twenty minutes to have the table cleared and no one asked if we wanted dessert. Another ten minutes passed before we could flag down a member of staff. Unfortunately, in the intervening period, I heard the chef make a really repellant slur about a member of the public who had committed the heinous crime of asking for a burger on a Sunday. Because of that, we didn’t order dessert and we won’t be coming back.

Me and my partner stayed overnight at the Woolpack for a wedding nearby. The pub itself has a fairly typical "old man pub" vibe to it but the barmaid was extremely helpful with showing us our room, explaining how to access our rooms once the pub has closed and also trying to get us a cab from the venue. The room itself was gorgeous, clean, and spacious. Leaving a complimentary breakfast in a hamper along with a fridge full of milk/juice/yoghurt was a lovely and unexpected touch. The adjoining bathroom was also massive and beautifully decorated. I would only caution that local public transport can't really be relied upon to get anywhere from the pub. We went to a wedding that was a mere 4-minute drive away and both of us wanted to drink, but few cab companies would even consider picking us up due to Coggeshall not having its own taxi service, and those that did quoted around an hour. Our return cab to the venue ended up being £26 on a Monday night. As such, if you can drive it's certainly recommended. Basically, a lovely place to stay but definitely plan ahead and expect a long wait for taxis due to the area.

Thank you to Lee the chef for the lovely food and for going out in the pouring rain to look for my lost father in law, and to Martin for the most beautiful pub garden I’ve ever seen. We visited as part of a pre wedding celebration. We pre-ordered our food and the TA reviews lifted our expectations. We had prawn and avocado and blue cheese salads at £18 & £17. The salads contained a selection of ingredients but were small in size. Whilst they tasted ok being charged these prices I expected them to be a cut above the rest. Our friends had pizzas eating only half each as they were disappointing and lacked flavour. Not a good experienced and over charged for what was mediocre salads. Just to make things worse we spoke to a regular in the garden who confirmed it was a nice pub but the food was terrible. We definitely won’t be returning.

We went on a Saturday night. Our starter was the cheese garlic bread which was filling and tasty. For mains we had the steak and chips, and chicken and mushroom. Excellent service, the portions were generous and the food was delicious and freshly prepared. (Some items on the basic menu might be frozen.) There was a choice of three ales plus draught Guinness. A very pleasant experience and congratulations to the new owners. The bill came to £67 including drinks and tips but no pudding.

This is a really old pub probably as it was hundreds of years ago and sits near the impressive church. We only had sandwiches but they were really good. If you lie traditional this is the place for you.

Four of us called in for a late lunch mid week after a visit to Paycocke's recently. We decided to go for the baguettes which were lovely and crispy and generously filled. It's a proper pub, not rejuvenated like some to a ridiculous extent and overall it was a pleasant experience.

I am glad that places like the Woolpack still exist in our increasingly bland, homogenised world. Entering the ancient pub is like entering another age altogether. Don't come here if you want slickness and modernity. Come here if you like authenticity and history.

Pre-arranged a lunchtime visit at The Woolpack for a group of ramblers for lunch (meals & drink) and upon checking on the day prior to our arrival to inform them of our numbers and chosen meals I was duly informed that they would not be cooking meals today as they had had a busy weekend so was going to have a break today. Also stated that he needed to replenish his stock. No advice was given as to a substitute venue for us to visit for lunch and basically he was not interested! Fortunately we found alternative very welcoming pubs in Coggeshall who met our needs, The Chapel Inn and The White Hart. £300 of lost business and now blacklisted, what a way to run a business!!!

After visiting the church next door it was time for lunch and from the outside The Woolpack looked interesting. We were not dissapointed. A collection of small rooms with a very friendly lady serving behind the bar. As we only wanted a small meal it was suggested a cheese ploughmans to share all washed down with a pint of local beer

I will start this long and concise review by stating I've been in the hospitality industry. We came here pre booked as a table of 9, including 3 children at 3 pm on a Sunday. This was for my mother in laws birthday. Now the reason I say this time is because by now the kitchen had run out of several key components of their roasts and other main menu items such as beef and mashed potatoes. This considering the place was completely dead at this time. Why is the kind of chef that can not ensure they have ordered in and prepared these items that are vital components should wander down to McDonald's where someone with more experience will handle that for you whilst you're flipping burgers. Most of the remaining menu items are just thrust into the microwave or deep-fried without soul or care. Our starters took a full 50 minutes to be served, we had enquired earlier why it was taking so long as the kitchen had no other orders to prepare and was informed they were just being plated up. Still took another 20 minutes to produce these 5 starters! I'd chosen the salt and pepper squid that contained neither salt nor pepper! Bland would be an understatement. The rest of the meal was no less a long awaiting for poorly presented mess. It's clear the chef has no passion for food, and I'm certain wears a plaster on his microwave finger from overuse. The food was bland, overcooked, and under prepaired. The lamb Shank looked as if half the meat was missing, the hunters chicken was overcooked and dried out, and the beef bourguignon had no red wine, making it a tiny piece of beef stew. The list of disappointed meals went on. I can honestly say this is the single most disappointing meal I've had the misfortune of being served (eventually). I will not return and would recommend others avoid.

Covid safe and clean. Was a pleasant day so could sit on their outside patio area. Had a bacon sandwich, friends had cake. Bread was dry and I wish places would use proper butter, not some spread. Even with bacon you could still taste it... Service very friendly and pleasant.
