Absolutely love this restaurant and so good to see its continuing success. We always dine here when visiting the area and have never been disappointed. We dined twice during our stay this time and on both occasions we were spoilt for choice. The set menu is varied and locally sourced, cooked to perfection by Chris and Agi's wine and cocktail selections are inspired.

We ate here twice during a weeks’ stay in Lochaline, the first time we had booked in advance of our visit and we were so impressed we booked to eat again later that week. This is a hidden gem of a restaurant serving fine dining cookery where you probably wouldn’t expect to find it. The exterior of the building appears underwhelming, and the path around the side to the entrance doesn’t inspire confidence in what to expect but once inside the staff and proprietors are lovely and then the food arrives - exceptional.

Stopped by with the family for lunch. Food and service good Prices too high. £27 for a seafood platter for two which in all honesty would do one person and wasn’t all that. We actually assumed we’d ordered it for one person (£17) when it arrived, seemingly this was not the case when we got the bill. Platter was standard plate size and consisted of: Smoked salmon, mackerel pate and smoked trout. Oh and a salad accompanying it. Nil else. No bread, no sides and no dressing for the salad. The added mussels (as extra!) were good as was the soup. All in all ok, not amazing and much too expensive.

Sweet potato and coconut soup, veggie platter adapted for vegan, vegan raspberry soufflé with ice cream and homemade bread. Yum yum. We've wanted to visit for a while and managed to go for dinner to celebrate a big birthday. Our food was outstanding and we couldn’t fault our dishes, the fresh and interesting amuse bouche was a great prequel to 3 fabulous courses. My chocolate orange souffle was to die for! Lovely friendly and smiling staff too. We'd definitely suggest doing away with the QR code menu though. Very reasonable price for such superb fine dining.

I last visited this restaurant pre-Covid, when the experience was truly special, and a gem of an unexpected ‘find’ in this area. Everything was just right: The food, the service, the ambience, even the price! Now, however, the whole place looks tired, with rather ‘dated’ decor and furniture. The food was good - (I had the crab crumpet and the halibut - both popular choices on the night) although not in any way exceptional), however, the service was rather ‘hit and miss’ (perhaps because most couples appeared to have booked their table for the same time?). What I didn’t like though was the very odd and unwelcome method of having to view the menu through a QR code plonked on one’s table, which lowers the tone, and as another diner said “I didn’t bring my phone .. so, what do I do”? Added to which: the placing of the tables is somewhat ‘schoolroom’ in appearance, with the half-open dividing wall between one room of diners and the next, meaning that I was effectively sitting right next to another customer, whose every word of conversation was audible. This is not what I pay £150 for, and I’m in no hurry to return.

Went for lunch having read the previous reviews and what sounded like a great dining experience on their website. We booked thinking it would be busy but there were few people for lunch (maybe 3 couples as well as us that afternoon). As we entered we were greeted by a medium sized barking dog which then followed us to our table attention seeking. Our server sat us very near to the only couple initially in the restaurant. Both people were busy scrolling on their mobile phones which gave the feeling of being in a cheap fast food restaurant. We soon discovered why when our server gave us a card with a QR code to access the menu. Then we sat looking at our phones like zombies rather than having the usual pre meal chat about what we might eat. The menu only had 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 desserts! I'm sure that it would have been more friendly and polite if the server had simply told us what was available or had it written on something like a board if they feel so strongly about not using paper on environmental grounds. (There was probably more damage to the environment using our phones !). The food was quite tasteless although well presented and definitely not worth about £50 per head for 3 smallish courses with drinks. The ambience was not great and the furniture had seen better days since being bought from IKEA years ago. This restaurant had a great reputation with its previous owners which I suspect the new owners are relying on. Definitely wouldn't go again, there's better choices not too far away.

We chose this restaurant for a family celebration, which the chef catered for with a bespoke menu. To say all 13 of us (aged between 3 and 83!) had a wonderful time is an understatement. The food was delicious and of such a high standard, and we were looked after so well by Agi. This restaurant deserves a Michelin visit. As family members we have dined far and wide, from New York to Beijing, and this was a very fine example of dining as it should be -- locally sourced ingredients allowed to sing on a plate by careful handling and fine skills. Don't miss the chance to visit if you are in the area -- it's even worth coming from further afield for as I am sure it won't stay under the radar for long. The memories will linger for a long time. Thanks again.

My husband reserved us a table for my birthday. It was simply wonderful. The staff were perfectly attentive, calm, and clearly very passionate about the service they were giving. Both servers were very professional and personable. Seeing the chef work in the kitchen from our table was wonderful. The atmosphere was cosy and welcoming. And the food was the best food we have had in Scotland. They have a lovely range of different wines to offer to pair with your meal. My husband is a vegetarian, and they were able to accommodate him very easily, even giving us a few options out with the menu, should he not want what was on the menu. The food was seasonal, local, and absolutely delicious. Thank you again for the wonderful visit.

Casual fine dining at its best! When we rang to book were asked about dietary requirements of the party. The welcome was good, ambience and decor pleasing, food delicious! Plus an interesting wine list to complement the food. We shall return when next in the area,.

Incredibly rude and unwelcoming staff. The place looks cozy, unfortunately that is the only nice thing about it. We have visited The White House for many years. The early day enthusiasm for innovation and experimentation coupled with great skill and imaginative use of local produce has all but disappeared. Today even our welcome was muted and charmless and the kitchen urged us to get a move on to order our meal. There was a distinct atmosphere of “ let’s get the customer out ASAP”. The food was our saving grace and still retains some of the quality but not all and presentation was very reminiscent of previous years fare. Perhaps a little more enthusiasm from staff to make guests feel more welcome and a little more enterprise with the menu would help restore the praise which the White House certainly deserves.

The evening was wonderful from start to finish. We had a warm welcome, a delicious amuse-bouche, 4 courses consisting of dishes we had not previously encountered and full of interesting flavours and two excellent bottles of wine from their unusual list. The vegetarian in our party was specially catered for and loved his separate dish. The staff were very pleasant and at the end the chef was happy to chat about what he is doing. An unpreposessing, but attractive exterior hides a small, intimate restaurant of outstanding quality. The set menu...changes daily....offers sufficient choice for most and is able explained by those serving. Four courses more than satisfied us all - even my hungry husband - and provided a wonderful range of flavours, with unusual ingredients combined. Do take time to enjoy the seaweed garnishes, which were unexpectedly tasty! We were slightly disappointed by one of the sweet choices - the Border Tart had heavy pastry and harsher flavours compared to the subtle blends of the savoury courses. However this was a very minor flaw in an otherwise superb meal.

We had heard about this little gem from friends in Northampton, then heard about it again and again from anyone we spoke to in Strontian where we were staying. Luckily for us their opening for the season coincided with our 10th wedding anniversary so lunch was booked. It was amazing food, they serve a taster menu so could have anything from 2 to 7 courses. We had 3 and for lunch this was perfect. The menu is decided on the day dependant on what this amazing chef is able to source which makes this very special indeed. The scallops were amazing as were the mussels and if you don’t think you like chicory then think again! My husband loved the local venison which he said ‘melted’ in his mouth.

Don't be put off by a somewhat unprepossessing exterior when visiting this restaurant. Inside it is beautifully decorated with natural colours and artefacts, all of which make for a relaxing space in which to enjoy the superb taster menu. Although a taster menu, you can have as man y courses as you wish and are not hungry at the end of it! The strength of the cooking lies in the original and interesting combinations of locally sourced ingredients - all of it beautifully presented. There were too many excellent small details to list here but of particular note was the terrine of smoked trout, haddock and slices of potato and the scallops, which were the best my partner had ever tasted. The pannacotta with cherries and chocolate covered Turkish delight squares was absolutely fantastic too. A gripe that has nothing to do with the restaurant but the laws in Scotland now is that one cannot even have one small glass of wine to accompany a meal if you are the driver. Nevertheless, if you are in Lochaline and want to enjoy really well conceived and delicious food, then when it reopens after the winter break in March/April, the Whitehouse is the place to go!

Visited this restaurant whilst having a weeks holiday staying on the very beautiful nearby Ardtornish Estate. We had the taster menu which if I remember correctly was £45 for 5 courses. The menu is short - which I like and seafood led on the night we visited with venison - loin of hind the meat option on the taster menu. The portions are smallish as they are on most taster style menus - but I think the portion sizes were about right over the courses. I certainly did not leave feeling hungry. I particularly liked the seafood courses - really beautifully presented and interesting exciting flavours. They incorporated what I imagine were foraged local sea herbs - I asked the waitress what they were - because I had never tasted them and she brought me samples from the kitchen to taste and explained what they were which I really appreciated. On that note I thought the staff and service were really good - friendly, attentive but not too 'in your face' all the time. Good reasonably priced shortish wine list. Finished off with a few cheeses - which were lovely and hallelujah they were served at room temperature. It really irritates me when restaurants serve cheese straight out the refrigerator. My only criticism was of the loin of hind - it's really delicate meat and was served beautifully blush pink which was great but I found the sauce was too sweet and seemed to entirely over power and mask the flavour of the meat. Pity because everything else was great - but maybe that is just my taste - my partner who is not a big fan of game meats liked it! Definitely would visit here again if up in that part of Scotland.

My husband and I ate at the Whitehouse for lunch. While this is normally the kind of food we would reserve fo dinner, lunch just happened to work best for our plans. There is a new menu daily. At lunch, 2 choices for starter, 2 for entree, and 2 for dessert (they also offer a cheese course) but you can do as many or as few courses as you want. We went for it and had 3 courses each since it was vacation after all but you could certainly eat lighter if you preferred. All ingredients are sourced as locally as possible, and you can tell. For example, I’m not usually a mussels fan but I ate every last one as they were so fresh and sweet. The restaurant itself is set into two smallish but bright rooms—cozy, cheerful, tastefully decorated. Good wine list, including by the glass. Highly recommend whether for lunch or dinner!

I popped in to book in advance and mentioned to the chef that my friend was vegetarian but also had some digestive problems. The chef immediately reassured me he could accommodate us and her dietary requirements...something larger restaurants with lots of food choice aren't always able to do!! When we arrived on Friday night it was warm and welcoming. The chef remembered us and presented my friend with her own handwritten personal menu but said if she didn't like it he could change things. We ordered the 4 course taster and wow! Never had food like it. The mussels were huge and the scallops were absolutely divine. You could taste the freshness and the care that had gone into presenting the best flavours. My friend wasn't sure about the puddings in case they contained gelatin...no problem, chef Mike just whipped her up a personal Bellini pudding on the spot! It was truly amazing, made us feel special but not singled out or excluded and was the perfect end to an amazing holiday. Thank you

This white jewel snuggles in what passes for the heart of Lochaline, just up the hill from the ferry and hard against the compendious village shop and community filling station. It is open from broadly Easter to October and in late summer Mull was serving her Scottish Weather Tasting Menu. Only snow was off, and as the showers blew across the Sound we arrived on foot dripping gently. I was a little surprised that our coats were not taken, nor was there anywhere to hang them, save the backs of our chairs. However my mild irritation evaporated as fast as the steam from clothes hung in front of a good fire, as we were promptly led (as soon as our very necessary reservation had been checked) into the small dining room. I say the dining room, but it is in reality two adjacent rooms with the intervening wall breached by sort of gun ports, giving intriguing glimpses of the other diners and the windows beyond. Whitewashed stone and pastel blues, and a strip wood floor that terminated short of the outside walls in a kind of stone-chip French drain that spoke perhaps to the owners having had at one time more than enough of their own damp problems to overcome. Whatever the reason, the overall effect is delightful, set off by end walls covered in a shoal of plaster mackerel purposefully swimming south. The kitchen is open to one of the dining rooms.

We visited with a recommendation from friends who assured us we wouldn’t be disappointed. Sadly we didn’t book so the evening was out but we waited for lunch the next day for a tasting menu. We were not in anyway disappointed. It was quite simply magical. That’s how the Pouilly Fume 2017 was billed and it suited our taster lunch too perfection. I won’t try to describe the food more than to say it was simply beautiful. My daughter a vegetarian was fed a salad that she billed as the very best she’d ever eaten. I’ve taken pictures here in provided. The service was exemplary and fun not in any way snooty and I’m not saying you should expect it but when your eating fine food like this certainly is it can sometimes be that way. I’m sure we all have experienced such. Anyway I can only highly recommend this Resturant for its experimental tastes, it’s award winning history, it’s stunningly presented food, it’s sustainable use of local produce and it’s welcoming ambiance. These folk look forward to greeting you I hope you make the journey you won’t be disappointed!

Unpresumptuous food that is recognizable yet fun, Michelin rated, with friendly service. Dinner reservations recommended. Vegetarian menu upon request. Fixed course menus with an option for four or six for dinner. Alcohol available. Say hi to the chefs in the kitchen as they prep your food. Cozy and clean. Recommended by locals.

We booked The Whitehouse as we were staying in the area before catching the ferry to Mull & were recommended this restaurant. They source their ingredients as locally as possible & the quails' eggs on the menu were provided by our host, Clare. Ian & the team are all very welcoming & the 4 or 6 course tasting menus produced by the chefs are creative, colourful & mouth-watering.

We were staying in Lochaline for a diving trip. We’d heard about the restaurant but hadn’t booked. Fortunately they managed to fit us in, and we weren’t disappointed. We did the 4-course taster menu. Each course was beautifully presented (see pics) We couldn’t fault anything. Definitely book if going to the area.

My husband and I had booked a table for two this evening and it was confirmed by mail. But when we arrived there we found out that the restaurant was closed. It would have been nice to leave us a message by mail. Instead of a wonderful evening in the restaurant we had fish and chips at the harbour snack bar.

What a fantastic restaurant and so unexpected in this remote part of the Scottish highlands. The food is locally sourced and delicious, with a good selection of wines (including organic) and the service is friendly and attentive without being over powering. Make no mistake, this is not just good Scottish food but fine dining, every bit as good as can be found in London (and much cheaper). This is definitely worth going out of your way for but book beforehand as it is not very big and rightly very busy.

It was a strong recommendation from Tony in Ardfern where we chartered our sailboat for 10 days. We tried on our 3rd day without reservation - no luck - so changed our route and came back to Lochaline Harbour yesterday, with a fairly late reservation. It was a wonderful evening. Ok, one of us drank the final beer. But the food was wonderful. You pick a 4 or 6 course meal. For us Germans it was not that easy to understand what exactly we get. But it was all beautifully decorated and tasted wonderful.

Truly fabulous experience. Delicious seafood and understated tasteful interior. It’s all about the warm welcome, relaxed vibe and amazing food. Excellent diverse menu, full of local seasonal produce. Authentic and worth the drive to the west coast. If only every restaurant in Scotland could be like this.. book ahead as it’s very popular (no surprise!)

Incredible location in the ferry town of Lochaline just a short hop from the Isle of Mull. The food here is some of the very best and most locally sourced you will find in the Highlands. This place has won multiple awards and would probably win more if it wasnt so far from the bulk of the UK population!

We caught the ferry from Mull for a birthday lunch and it is hard to see how it could have been bettered. Ingredients fresh and beautiful, the naturally tender left to speak for themselves, with other things (I’m thinking venison shoulder) cooked low and slow until they melt deliciously. Several ideas will be duly stolen when I get home, including the very simple layering of botanic gin, sorbet and spuma that slid down so well when I had no space left. And I don’t often bother to mention coffee, but that was one of the best espressos ever.

After seeing many positive reviews in the guest book of our cottage and a simple business card left on the shelf we decided we’d give it a go, despite its remoteness! We visited on a Wednesday night at 6.30 after making a reservation and being told we were the only booking in! We were the only diners for ten mins or so but the friendly and relaxed vibe meant this was not in any way awkward! The menu was a 6 option taster which you can either have all of or 4 courses for £45 (which we had). It was plenty of food! Each course was carefully prepared, with local ingredients and creative combinations. We loved every single bite, with not one element being neglected despite its relative prominence in the dish. It’s very much worth the drive (great views/drive) and is the best food we had on our honeymoon by far.

£45 seemed like a lot to spend per head in this part of the world, but eating at the White House would have been worth twice, three times that price. The food - all inspired by and sourced from the Highland and Islands - was prepared with artistry and care, and tasted absolutely delicious. It was journey into the textures and flavours of Scotland's West Coast that we'll never forget! The restaurant itself was unpretentious and friendly. The waitress was considerate and informative. One of the best eating experiences we've had in years. We couldn't believe the place doesn't already have a Michelin star, but were told that such an accolade would put too much pressure on the restaurant, and wasn't worth the bother! Respect!

What a great meal we had at the Whitehouse, one of my favorite places to eat whilst on holiday. The choices on the new style taster menu were superb and it was hard trying to decide what to leave out... this did result in eating to much and a higher bill than we planned but we enjoyed every mouthfull. The service is great, the atmosphere very pleasant and the food superb...

It is the end of the season in this part of the world so the restaurant was not very busy, so it is a credit to the owners and the staff that we had a fabulous lunch there today. They have a taster menu and do explain every dish and how you can vary what you have and in what order. I had two starters and one main as did two others in my party the other diner had one starter and two mains. The food was fantastic and beautifully presented the service first class and the whole experience an absolute delight. Unfortunately this restaurant is five hundred miles from home so a repeat will have to wait for a few months but I will be back.

This place is a hidden gem! We were driving by and found it by chance. The crispy chicken burger was really tasty. My kids loved the nachos and loaded fries. The food quality and taste were amazing, and the prices were very affordable. If you’re in the area, it's a must-try, and the view from the place is breathtaking.

On our holiday in Glenelg we popped into this cafe, which is popular with both locals and visitors. We only had coffee, but the food on offer looked very tasty. The owner was very friendly and helpful. There is ample parking nearby. Overall a nice place for a snack. Highly recommend.

The hotel is in a very priviliged situation overlooking the bay of Loch Duart. The hospitality service is great and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. Some of the decoration misses the final touch, i.e the wintergarden, the reception area. But it is still a very recommendable address.
