Coul House Restaurant in Highland

Exceptionally warm experience An absolute pleasure of a guest house. The rooms are beautifully appointed with great attention to detail, from the lighting and comfortable bedding, carpets and custom drapes to the handsome bath with plush towels, and good water pressure. Everything was spotless and tastefully done all through-out the house. The setting is tranquil and beautifully maintained, lush with trees and flowers of all sorts, giving every window a lovely view. One of the many things we appreciated about Coul House were the various public spaces you could enjoy - the big, beautiful dining room; the cozy bar; a little snug with just enough tables and seating for a quiet game of cards or a private chat; the conversation circle by the fireplace in the foyer, a frequent place where families would gather. We never had dinner at Coul House (we typically have a large lunch), but we did enjoy more than one soup and sandwich in the bar during the evening. Breakfast was always delicious and made fresh-to-order, served in the handsome dining room, with it’s beautifully set tables and big windows overlooking the garden. In a case of perhaps saving the best for last, the exceptional service and friendliness of the hosts and staff cannot be overstated. Everyone, to a person, was professional, kind and personable. Many of the employees have been with Coul House for years, they truly work as a team, and such longevity speaks well of the owners. Without hesitation, we HIGHLY recommend Coul House.

First visit. Only tea/coffee with delicious homemade shortbread. Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. Excellent staff. Now plan to return to sample the menu. Based on my limited experience, highly recommended.

I’ve stayed here with my wife on 3 different occasions. Twice in Nov 2022 and recently in Apr 2024. That we’ve been back thrice says something. Rooms are lovely and cosy. The water pressure is excellent. We had garden view rooms during our stays and it’s nice to see wildlife like rabbits hope around the lawn in the morning. Above all, the hospitality was fantastic and faultless. Special shout out to Chris for his exceptional service and for making my wife and I feel so welcomed. Dining there is also highly recommended. We had all our dinners and drinks at the hotel because it was just too good!

What an amazing place. Service polished to a mirror shine from start to finish. Stayed here with our dog in one of the cosy downstairs rooms. The food was truly excellent, a menu full of creative takes on classic dishes and a bar with delicious cocktails for before dinner and an impressive tome of a whisky list for afterwards! Old fashioned in the best possible sense of the word - all the little things got absolutely right. We enjoyed a warm and friendly welcome from when we walked in the door to when we left in the morning which felt all too soon. We will be back!

Everything you'd want for a quiet few days away: excellent food, fresh decor, warm welcome and great service. I have to mention the fluffy white towels and crisp white sheets too! Can't wait to come back again!

We love Coul House and Stuart, Susannah and all the staff are always so attentive and friendly. My wife and I have stayed there many times over the past 15 years and we are excited to be returning for another weekend break soon.

Love the afternoon tea here. It's not a set menu, you just order what you want. Everything is lovely, but the warm scones deserve a special mention. How lovely to relax by the fire and with your dog too! Always such a warm welcome too.

Booked for lunch, a first time visit for us. A very imposing Georgian house (1821) reached via a long driveway (in good condition) and set in beautiful grounds. Large carparking area near the entrance with easy access. Beautifully decorated through out with a literally warm welcome in reception with a roaring fire in a Jacobean fireplace. The main dining room is elegant and well lit in the daytime with a very large south facing bay window. The service was excellent with the co-owner (Stuart) taking a personal interest in his guests. The menu is in transition to a new one so it was a bit different to the on-line version. A sensibly sized menu with a good range of choice and some imaginative creations. The courses arrived in good time and were beautifully plated. Portions were spot-on for us. The food was excellent. While the main dining room would be for special occasions for us, there is also a sandwich option and a spacious and comfortable bar.

Hidden away in an idyllic location this Historic Victorian Mansion has been sympathetically updated. It has a specific market in mind and succeeds in achieving it. Everything hits the mark but beware . It comes at a price . Hold on to your wallet and resist the tempting selection of rare whiskies at hand. Highland hospitality and location at its best.

Should have written a review long before this. Myself & my wife have visited Coul house for meals many times. The standard of food served is always of a high standard. Always lots of choice on the menu, at very reasonable prices. You are also assured of a friendly welcome every time. Look forward to our next meal there. Highly recommend.

Wow! 🤩 Every single thing about our visit was perfect. Had a delicious G&T by the fire in the beautiful lounge while reading the menu. There was a lovely selection of options and the waiter was very informative. We were only visiting for a wee date night having last been at Coul House years ago. It was even better than we remembered. Thank you to Stuart, Susannah and the amazing team for such a warm welcome and for giving us this lovely wee hotel to enjoy!!

Just wanted to say thank you for making Saturday such a wonderful and memorable birthday celebration for our family!  The cakes, afternoon tea and service were faultless throughout! Stuart, Lara and the rest of the staff went above and beyond and made it a very special day. It will be treasured and remembered by all!

Our family of three had a very nice dinner at the restaurant while staying at the hotel. The menu offered great variety and our meals were delicious and very nicely presented. Considering our toddler can be very picky about mealtime, we also appreciated that he really enjoyed the kids fish and chips. It seemed to be a very popular place as well, with every table full when we arrived.

We had a great lunch. A sophisticated and very good menu. Lots of thought has gone into the design and delivery of the experience, and it works a treat. Food was top notch, plenty of variety and a clever and capable chef is clearly in charge. Pricing is fair for the quality, ingredients are local/regional where possible and this really makes the menu feel quite special. Excellent wine list with an abundance of choices; this again has been very well thought through, something for every palate and pricing is sensible. Highly recommended.

Had a very pleasant dinner here with my family. The atmosphere was super cosy with soft music and a roaring log fire. The staff were kind, attentive and unobtrusive. I am a coeliac and needed gluten free food. This was no problem and most of the menu could be adapted to make it suitable, I was even given freshly made gluten free bread which was delicious! At no point was I made to feel like my dietary needs were an inconvenience and it made things so enjoyable to not feel left out because there were numerous options for every course. This is more of a fine dining place but it’s worth every penny for the quality of the food, the ambiance and the dedication of the waiting stafff. Couldn’t recommend it more highly 😊

We’ve visited here a few times now and each time we leave having thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The Hotel is set in a stunning location and at this time of year, the grounds are absolutely stunning. Since the weather was so good during our stay, we actually managed to sit out on the terrace outside the bar, enjoying the sunshine. The staff are all very attentive and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. You definitely get they feel that nothing is too much hassle. They also contribute to the hotel’s very relaxed and chilled out atmosphere. I’d highly recommend you stay to eat, the food is brilliant. We’ve eaten here a few times now and never leave disappointed. Food is tasty, well proportioned and there is plenty of choice on the menu. We enjoy Coul House Hotel so much we’ve booked our wedding here for later in the year. Highly recommend, hard to beat.

Set inside the wonderful Could House Hotel (think Bridgerton) this restaurant is very good. We have eaten here twice and all the dishes we had were very tasty. Service is absolutely excellent. For me it just misses out on five stars as it just doesn't quite pull off fine dining. But I would certainly have no problems coming back again.

Blown away by the beautiful building after a drive up through the forest edged road, opened the front door to a lovely roaring log fire at reception and a warm welcome from the gentleman on duty. Sat down on the chairs beside the fire and menus and drinks in our hands in minutes and felt at home at once, not ill at ease because of the grand establishment just a genuine Highland hospitality warmth in the building which has a beautiful ambience and reflects the staff. After looking at the menu our order was taken and the food was in a different league the like I haven't tasted in years, in fact started to realise how good food could be, it was heaven in every bite just perfection, we could not fault anything at all. We were celebrating our sons 21st Birthday and thanks to this beautiful Hotel and staff, it will be a thing not only he but us all as a family will treasure for a long time, a fantastic end to a wonderful day celebrating his Birthday. Treat yourself you will not be disappointed and experience real Highland Hospitality at its finest.

We stopped for lunch en route Skye to Inverness Airport. Couldn’t have asked for a more relaxing and quality afternoon. Service, from the moment we arrived, was top class. Sat in front of the fire in the hallway and within ten minutes with a Kumeu River SB served. Food was really excellent - Ballottine Rabbit to Venison Loin to Petit Fours. Wine list diverse and well priced. Really enjoyed the Lanzerac Pinotage. Recommend highly.

Called in 'on spec' for a morning coffee, investigating the drive from the main road in Contin. Could not have been more pleased! Excellent location, fantastic views. This is a truly excellent restaurant. The cuisine is modern Scottish using locally sourced ingredients. We stayed here for 3 night and looked forward to both dinner and breakfast every day! The wine list is excellent and not overly priced in my opinion. Highly recommended.

Stunning setting, friendly and attentive service, delicious food - everything was outstanding. Particularly loved the venison and the pheasant with black pudding was delicious - I normally push black pudding to the side but this was so good I finished all of it.

Dinner was delicious. The menu was varied and dishes were beautifully presented. The dining room has beautiful garden views. Breakfast was table service and cooked to order which meant it was hot and very fresh. The service was very first class.

We need to eat where we are staying but this was not just food. It was a great dinner And a great breakfast, great choices

My husband and I had the best dinner so far in this restaurant, the place looks stunning and the food is incredibly good! Everything was perfect, the manager and the rest of the staff are incredibly kind ! I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a special dinner , excellent food and an amazing view! We will definitely come back.

I had already reviewed lunch here, but we went for Valentines dinner on Friday night. Not disappointed! The service is first class. We were seated in the lounge with our drinks, and were given olives and a bombay mix. We were also given the menu here and once we ordered had time to relax with our drinks before being taken through to the restaurant. The choice of food was excellent and all served with a smile from all the staff. The ambience was so lovely with the tables dressed in white table covers, lovely linen napkins, and one red rose with a beautiful candle on the the table. A log fire was burning too and a chandelier on the ceiling sparkled with small lights attache d going into each corner of the ceiling. Very nice. I had the marinated King Prawns and Hubby the brown onion soup. Both were delicious. My main course was the catch of today which was Salmon en Croute with lentils, asparagus and broccoli . Hubby had the roast duck again with same veg but potatoes. Will definitely be back again.

We have visited the restaurant twice. The service is superb, the menu choice is excellent, the wine list is extensive—and only slightly overpriced, but the food is priced reasonably. Give yourself time to arrive a little earlier to enjoy the bar.The hotel, which houses the restaurant, is not as grand as the restaurant, I am afraid. It feels more like an upscale B&B, having stayed there for a couple of nights, see my other review. However, the restaurant is top-notch.

We stayed in for our first night there (alternatives are far away). We had a drink at the bar before which turned out to be reasonable in price! Food was great and the view from the restaurant.

I recently was tasked with babysitting a friends 3 kids plus my own son. Wanting to take them out for a wee adventure that would keep all ages happy, I decided the fairy walk at coul house hotel would be good. The boys absolutely loved it. So much work and effort has gone into it and the boys were constantly in awe of their surrounding. We were starving afterwards we had already been in to look at the menu and visit the toilets before the walk and the gentleman who greeted us was extremely friendly and welcoming. So we decided to go in for some food. 3 bowls of chips,a sandwich and a hogie later, we were all re-fuelled and ready to go home. The staff are all very friendly, professional and informative (I overheard another male member of staff giving 2 guests information on a local walk). Would love to come back for an afternoon tea with some friends

è a pochi minuti a Strathpeffer ed è una bella casa di campagna all'interno di un bel parco. si parcheggia davanti all'ingresso. L'interno è adeguato allo stile della casa ed è molto piacevole, accogliente. ci siamo accomodati in sala bar e abbiamo scelto i piatti che desideravamo per cena e anche il vino. si va in sala quando è tutto praticamente pronto. Il bar è ben fornito e il barman, che si rivelerà tutto fare, è molto gentile ed è il migliore di tutto lo staff. Abbiamo mangiato una zuppa di funghi, buona, e il filetto di manzo tenero e gustoso. Il vino Malbec argentino era giusto. I camerieri giovani devono un po'...maturare visto l'ambiente in cui lavorano.

We have visited here before with our friends and once again struck gold with our recent experience at Coul House 21/8/19. We live at Drumnadrochit and look forward to visiting this outstanding restaurant. The greeting by front of house staff is always warm and welcoming as well as highly professional. The food is "divine" with a menu to suit all tastes. Every course from start to finish is beautifully presented - you eat with your eyes! - and this place does not disappoint. Each course was served by lovely staff who were more than helpful.On this occassion although I was very, very tempted by the fantastic range of desserts I asked if they had any fresh strawberries & raspberries per chance since I am watching my calories!!! The restaurant manager was only too happy to oblige, no if or buts here but excellent professional service unlike some other establishments where it can be the too hard to do box. Thankyou all once again - we had a lovely evening - a credit to the area and Scottish cuisine.

Because of we had no reservation for the much more cosy Red Poppy this was our only dinner option near Strathpeffer.The restaurant is in a very posh castle hotel. The nice environment is it's main attraction. The food is fairly moderate with a high price.

We treated ourselves to a dinner at coul house, and was met with absolute superb service! From the reservation call to our dinner we were met with very friendly and professional staff! The food was lovely and the the views from the dining hall was really great. If we had room in our budget we sure would have stayed at the hotel too -but will hopefully be back in the future!

Called for dinner when travelling home from holidaying on the Isle of Lewis. The exceptional service from all staff made this a very enjoyable experience and the food was delicious

This was a birthday treat and our 4th or 5th visit.

It was a beautiful place and views and grounds beyond belief! Lovely little fairy walk as well. We had lovely cocktails in the outer lobby sitting by a gorgeous fireplace and fire. Led to the dining room and our order was ready shortly after that. Everyone treated us well and it was good service and food. It is a higher-end and somewhat more expensive than most other places in the area, but you are treated very specially.

We visited the hotel for one night and had dinner, bed and breakfast. The dinner was excellent - good service and relaxing by the fire afterwards. The bedroom was a bit small but had a lovely views over the gardens and distant mountains.

super food, with super staff ,I started with gammon and blackpudding on a bed of beans , followed by the catch of the day which was a very nice hallibut fillet ,followed by super pudd great choices on all of the menu.

Reluctant to write a poor review but hope that it might help others. The reviews on here are very mixed. We did not stay but had an evening meal in the main dining room. The menu was the sort of thing that is found in many average Scottish hotels - not inspiring and the presentation was quite old-fashioned. I found the overall experience disappointing but heard afterwards the owners were away so perhaps that had something to do with it. To be honest, I am surprised this hotel is in the Good Hotel Guide as it is not in the same class as others included. Sorry.

Lovely hotel beautifully decorated warm and cosy waiting staff excellent the service was really top notch the food side offthing not so great especially for the price i had pork belly which was all fat the which was cold as was potatoes and the veg i and all family members especially mam and dad like our food to be piping hot mam had always wanted to go here we all thought taking her here for her 70th birthday was a good idea was a big disappointment for her and all off us wont be rushing back any time soon

This is a fine dining experience with all the service, attention to detail and finesse that is hard to find these days. The food was superb with an excellent menu choice. A thoroughly enjoyable dining experience. Great for a special occasion.

We visited with friends night (12/11/18) as they used to live at Contin and have eaten here many times before - it is their fav place. I can definately see why. On my first visit here I can honestly say this is the best meal out all year. We were warmly greeted on arrival and shown into a cosy lounge with log fire. After choosing our courses we were shown into a lovely dining room this time by a very polite helpful young man. Our courses arrived and each course was freshly cooked, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. I had the hummus fritters, steak course (the steak melted in your mouth) and then the passion fruit/lemon grass panacotta dessert with ginger biscuits Every single past of the meal was superb and we also asked for extra bread too - not because the portions were small but simply because it was delicious and def homemade. It was a lovely meal, great ambiance and all the staff we encountered personable and professional. Thank you for a great evening - we will def be returning from our home in Drumnadrochit.

This review is as a restaurant. We did not stay the night. We were the birthday lady, her sons, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. We had drinks at the bar by the open hearth fire. We studied the menu, clarified a few fine points from the menu and ordered. Then we were invited to go to our table. We had starters, mains and desserts. The dishes varied from satisfactory to excellent.The duck and the lamb were particularly good.

We stumbled across the Coul House on the way back from a rather soggy morning walk and were looking for a place to eat. It was already the back of 2pm and we thought the place looked far too smart to accommodate our muddy boots & paws. We went in anyway to ask if they could sit us and were received with a very warm welcome. We eat from the sandwich and soup menu in the lounge. This house is so beautiful and cozy, they had open fires roaring in the entrance hall and in the bar. All about the food was delicious, tasty red pepper and orzo soup, hock-ham and lentil soup, homemade bread, great tasting mature cheddar cheese, fab steak, onion and mushroom sandwich, all very tasty, even the shortcakes and fudge that accompany the tea. The service was very friendly and so accommodating. We would love to come back for proper diner, clean and properly dressed this time, although we were never made to feel that it was a necessity. Also would like to walk around the grounds and find the fairies.

A pre- dinner dram in the cosy bar offers an extensive choice of whiskies and highland hospitality to set the mood. The dinner menu is excellent and the service and food in the lovely restaurant is delicious whatever dish you choose. Round off your evening with a coffee beside the imposing log fire, a special malt whisky and a piece of shortbread.

If you do not have reservations for dinner, they start you in the bar with a drink and you order your food there. When your table is ready, they seat you and your food comes soon after. Food was very good. The staff are attentive and quick to bring what you ask for. Very professional.

We visited here for tea and cake while visiting friends in the area. We were a party of 4 adults and 4 children. The staff were friendly but the service was slow. We recieved luke-warm tea after a long wait and then eventually 45 minutes after ordering and chasing up our scones they arrived. We did receive a complimentary tea and coffee refill but the scones were overdone and dry and so after the wait with 4 children we left disappointed!

This restaurant is very special. It is set in a wonderful room with tremendous views over the hotels gardens. The service from the staff is first class, they are efficient and very accommodating. The food is excellent and the dining is relaxing and a delight. The breakfasts are also delightful with wonderful choices. Would I come again? Most definitely.

Hadden iets te vieren toen we hier aten. Er was voor ons gereserveerd. Echt iets bijzonders als je hier dineert. Eerst iets drinken in een aparte ruimte voor je naar je tafel wordt gebracht. Perfecte ambiance en een ruime keuze van een zeer goede kwaliteit. Een restaurant op stand tegen redelijke prijzen.

Two nights, two breakfasts and two dinners, all of excellent standard. I had the calves liver with red onion marmalade, very tender and cooked to perfection. There is always a catch of the day, ours was monkfish coated in chorizo flavoured panko crumbs , delicious. Efficient service, just fast enough but not too fast, hate being rushed in restaurants. I did see a couple of high teas, they looked good, if you like that sort of thing.

I can’t recommend Coul House highly enough. We have stayed here for the past 10 days. The hotel and grounds are lovely, the staff can’t do enough for you and the food is something very special. Overall it has been a most enjoyable experience. This is an excellent place to visit.

Very good food and friendly, excellent, service in a slightly starchy atmosphere. Good value considering the quality and complexity of the dishes. One star off maximum because the dining room could seriously do with some new chairs (or, at least, the seats of the chairs...

Visited here recently for dinner and had a very nice meal at Could House. Food and service was excellent and the hotel itself is beautiful and a very relaxing place to visit. Highly recommended and we will definitely be back!

The food was so good we dined in on all 4 nights. The menu was limited but with a choice for all tastes. A comprehensive wine list and selection of drinks. A great range of whisky and gins among other things. Good value for money....

I'd read previous reviews from people who have dined in Coul House Restaurant, and I can honestly say that we were also absolutely delighted with the experience. Upon arrival we were made utterly welcome, and then enjoyed an exceptional meal in the most delightlful surroundings....

From entry to exit be prepared to be treated with the best service, the best flavours and the best experience.

The Coul House is relatively formal -- white table cloth/cloth napkin style. Best in Contin, Dingwall, Strathpeffer area. Quite a varied menu, food well prepared and service excellent. One is invited into the bar to peruse the menu, order and then invited to table. Though formal, very welcoming and hospitable.

I was given a gift voucher as a birthday present. This was my first visit to Coul House Hotel but it will not be the last. I arrived before my friends so I went for a stroll in the beautiful garden and walked the Fairy trail, which was wonderful. The staff were really friendly from the moment I arrived and I felt very welcome. You can choose where you would like to sit and relax. We had afternoon tea and it was absolutely delicious from the very tasty sandwiches, lightest scones I have ever eaten to the best shortbread. It was so lovely to sit and enjoy the view and relax. We in no way felt hurried, and were well looked after. It was very good value for what you got and if you are in the area it is well worth the visit, it is hidden treasure.

Having visited this hotel in May 2016, with my daughter, I persuaded my wife and friends to have dinner there, in May 2017. We started in the garden, with some Black Isle Beers. Soon we found ourselves in the lovely dining room. The food is absolutely exquisite, which I think must be the norm for a place like this. The service, however, is on a level of its own. All the staff is customer focused, all the way. They see to you from start to finish and turn a good meal into an absolute treat. This, of cause, doesn't come cheap, but is was a bill we gladly paid. Should you find yourself in the area, go there!!

Have been here twice for afternoon tea, 11 months apart and both times it was an amazing experience. The sandwiches were wonderful and the cake superb. The first time we were able to sit outside on the terrace and enjoy the blazing August sunshine and beautiful gardens. The second time in June it was cooler and we sat inside in the comfy chairs in the bar. We went here for a family dinner last week and had the full restaurant experience. The food was delicious, we all had a different starter which ranged from locally foraged mushroom soup to crab cakes and bread & butter pudding. The mains were equally delectable, we had chicken pie with the lightest puff pastry top, a lentil & tomato succotash, calves liver and a halibut dish with purple potato. My description could not do justice especially when it comes to the divine desserts. The restaurant was empty when we arrived but soon filled to capacity, so booking is recommended. The waiting staff were very helpful and knowledgeable even knowing the names of the hills we could see in the distance, along with a great understanding of the wine and food. At no time were they intrusive, I hate it when you have just taken a bite of food and the waiter asks if everything is OK so you cannot answer properly. They certainly had the right balance of letting you enjoy your meal in peace but were there if you needed anything. We had coffee in the seating area of the reception where we felt comfy and cosy and the shortbread is the lightest I have ever tasted. Thoroughly recommend the restaurant not only for the delicious food but the whole dining experience, we came away feeling relaxed and completely enjoyed our evening. Will make this our first choice for future family celebrations.

Third visit to the Coul House Restaurant for dinner, this time for a wedding anniversary. If you want to treat yourselves and have superior, old fashioned good service from first class staff and host, this is the place to come. The chef is a genius, food amazing as usual. Cannot recommend highly enough.

We stayed at Coul house, and had two breakfasts and two dinners there. It is a fantastic restaurant, with some of the best food we had in Scotland. It was consistently strong - everything was great from starter to dessert. It was fancy without being pretentious. It featured many local Scottish ingredients. The staff were friendly, efficient, and even a bit funny (in a good way). It is a traditional sort of place where you go to the bar first for a drink, and order from there. Then you move to your table when your meal is almost ready. The dining room features a lovely view of the gardens outside.

Preisgünstig ist es sicher nicht. Aber die Atmosphäre, der Stil, sehr guter Service und noch besseres Essen in schöner Lage verdienen nun mal ihren Preis. Wenn man das Haus gefunden hat, was, nicht einfach ist, hat man eine wundervolle zeit.

My husband and I ate at the Coul House right after hiking - yes, we were still in our outdoor clothes :-) We looked up restaurants nearby and found the Coul House. We were definitely not dressed for this place but got treated like any other guest. The staff was very friendly, helpful and not judgmental. The food was amazing! Very well-flavoured, beautifully decorated and high in taste. The price was not even bad compared to other places that serve food of lower quality. We both highly recommend the Coul House!

Three of us visited at short notice. Great food, loverly venue and excellent staff. Look forward to returning when in the area.

The food here was first class. Great produce, beautifully prepared and then served with a smile. The flavours were just great and would stand alongside any of the top celebrity chef's establishments.
