We come here regularly in a group of 6 & book ahead, we travel a fair distance as we are not local to the area, Normally the service is Great & highly recommended, But unfortunately on our last visit when we arrived we apologised as 2 from our group dropped out at the last minute & were told by a youg man that it was ok & we were shown to our table & after ordering our drinks we we're spoken to by a Very rude lady whom I'm only guessing is the Manager / owner? in a Very unprofessional manner in front of All the other customers, which we found to be belittling, You should be ashamed of yourself speaking to your customers like that, It has put us off travelling here now & we will have find somewhere else whom may appreciate our custom ☹️👎👎

Update 27/2/25 Another great meal at this excellent local restaurant. Arrived at 7pm place was rammed full landlord stated it’s been full since opening time 530! Ordered garlic mushrooms to start and a steak and mushroom pie . Lady ordered soup and lamb Henry both excellent she can’t eat big meals so ended up with a doggy bag . Cannot fault this place . Sat in front of a lovely log burner so warm and cozy . We will be back First time at the Whitehouse for at least 25 years and the place hasn’t changed one bit … in a good way. Arrived at 545 on a Saturday afternoon you can’t book unless larger table over 5 but went early it was rammed already which is a good sign . Food gammon eggs very tasty lady had steak strips in a spicy sauce all enjoyed very much two pints of cider and two large red wines £52 all comparable to the other. Saddleworth must go to the Church Inn … is it as good ? yes but both places food very good and serving staff great . But Whitehouse much better Enjoyable will go again and again 7/11/2023 revisit Welcomed by staff on a miserable wet cold Tuesday afternoon . Warm inside roaring fires great start. Two large glasses of Malbec absolutely perfect Cod mornay with prawns amazing . Great food will be back 29/11 another visit Haddock and prawn mornay and steak strips simply Devine . Love this place the CvT Merlot amazing too

As per the review below, we also witnessed the distress of the owner but this was last year, when a large group of travellers ate and refused to pay. I think it's time the owners started calling the police when this happens. The male landlord is such a friendly fellow and it is awful to see his good nature taken advantage of. I've been going to this pub for 40 odd years, but I've been put off going as despite nice food, there is no lower calorie and fat options, the salad only and that comes with chips and the grilled salmon is spiced. I would previously order a lighter bite steak with new potatoes instead of chips as is the option on many other meals, but last time i went the landlady who stalks about the tables, looks at me strangely told me I couldn't do this any more with no reasoning why. I felt very uncomfortable. She was nice before then just turned. I wouldn't like to ask for an editing of my meals as with most restaurants such as my salmon cooked a certain way without sauce etc maybe it's pre done rather than fresh?

Won't be coming back, food quality very poor, same as menu in general really, there was nothing decent to choose from, not what we experience in other pubs. Lady serving us should just look for another job as she s clearly not happy with what she does.

We visited on a Wednesday lunchtime, the place was very busy but a table was soon found for us. We ordered drinks and the waitress soon came to take our food order. We had double Barnsley chop and chicken breast with leek and stilton sauce. Very generous portions, particularly the vegetables perfectly cooked. Lots of meals to choose from plus a blackboard with daily specials. It could be even better if there were more vegetarian options but we definitely intend to return soon.

The food is fantastic, service is excellent, friendly but professional. Sadly we witnessed a family of travellers who ordered an extraordinary amount of food, ate most of it, although a fair bit was scattered and thrown around the table and floor. Afterwards had the audacity to decline payment as “we didn’t like it and your policy say’s if you don’t like it you don’t have to pay “. Having visited for over 36 years and have never seen, or needed to see, the afore mentioned policy and NEVER EVER had a bad meal. They confirmed that they did not, at any point, advise staff that their meals did not meet their expectations, the almost empty plates spoke for themselves. I am aware that not all travellers are the same, and would not want to suggest they were, but this group were not a good example, as they suggested it was because of their lifestyle choices they were being targeted. They left using offensive profanities and expletives in front of their young children and those of other guests as, quite rightly they had to pay for the food they consumed. It is so sad that such a hard working group of people who absolutely and genuinely want to cook, serve and deliver good food to everyone have to tolerate this abusive behaviour this obnoxious group. Shame on you. Thank you Natalie, Pete and their fantastic team, who handled the situation, professionally and with minimal fuss and impact on a packed pub. Keep it up xx

After landing in Manchester from our winter holiday, thought we would break up the journey with some good food, having been here previously and thoroughly enjoying the experience. There was a bit of a wait to get a table, but as it was Saturday and just after a bad spell of weather, not surprising that everyone wanted to be in this lovely place. The food and service was great, as was previously and certainly will return again.

A group of about 15 came for.our Christmas lunch. The starter of prawn and salmon was nice but the main course left a lot to be desired. The vegetables were either rock hard (I was kindly served cauliflower stalks)! Or very limp. The food was very dry, the roast potatoes were frozen roast and very dry. All the staff were lovely apart from Natalie, who I personally think would benefit from attending a Customer Service course! There was no music, no atmosphere. I won't ever be dining here again. Today 16/10/2024 was our first time dining at The White House . Several of my relatives had recommended dining here . So today was that day . First impressions of The White House is it’s a beautiful old building . We were greeted by a lovely gentleman at the door as we were first to arrive at 12:00 . We got to choose where we wanted to sit for our meal . We did choose a window seat to admire the lovely views , unfortunately the weather wasn’t on our side today it was very foggy . We took to our seats then ordered our drinks . Then we had a look at the menu . They had a great choice of meals , also there’s the special board also . I opted for the Gammon , egg and chips which was delicious the gammon just melted in your mouth . One guest opted for the beef roast dinner , and fish and chips for another . Followed by our last guest had the Bury Black Pudding with mash and onions . I can honestly say that all our plates were empty . Everyone really enjoyed the food . The atmosphere was really nice . We will definitely be back in the very near future with some more of our friends and family .

This was my first trip to The White House and my first meal out in a few months so I was really looking forward to the meal as I had heard great things about it but I was a little disappointed really. My partner had the gammon, chips and veg and his gammon was a beautiful piece of meat, substantial and tasty, obviously great quality. I had the steak and kidney pie, chips and veg, the pie was a rather small piece and the chips were not real chips freshly cooked but of the frozen type that you might get in a Weatherspoons - I was really disappointed with them as they were tasteless. The waitress explained they were made offsite as they hadn’t room to make fresh chips. It wasn’t awful food by any standards but I feel that my meal didn’t reflect the price point. I suppose just not to my taste or expectations.

As we entered, we were told we couldn’t get a large Tropical Mango Frappuccino because they didn’t have large cups. Then, I was given a spoon instead of a straw to eat the bubbles in my drink since they didn’t have large suitable straws. We first ordered one and liked it, so I ordered the same again, but the barista looked visibly frustrated and even made an angry face. The experience was really disappointing. They seriously need to train their staff, keep essential items in stock or at least mark them as unavailable.

Classic pub, food had stopped serving by the time I went but does look good from photos online. Quite dark inside however comfortable seating. Quite expensive drinks for a pub - 2 X double spirits for £15ish.

To start with a positive the food was really good - terrific presentation and very tasty. Even the tea and coffee was good, hot and in lovely cups and teapot. Congratulations to the chef. But the service was terrible. I can't remember having such bad service. It was busy although there were empty tables when we arrived. A young waitress was just plain rude. When she came to take our order . She just looked at us and didn't say 'can I take your order, thank you for waiting etc.' - very odd. She forgot to bring us tap water we asked for. To be honest I had forgotten too, but when I remembered I went to the counter and asked for the water and said, she had forgotten. She brought the water to us and slammed the bottle on the table. She was very aggressive. Maybe she was having a bad day? We had been waiting for our order for some time. I asked an older, blonde waitress who was clearing a table next to us, when our food would arrive as we had a hospital appointment and were keeping an eye on the time. She immediately said, they were very busy and didn't know. I asked if she could find out for us. She didn't leave the table and said '5 minutes'. We didn't say anything more. When our food eventually arrived we enjoyed it. I went to pay at the counter and the younger waitress give me the bill which already included an optional 10% charge. I said I wasn't going to pay that today . I thought she might combust on the spot. Maybe they were both having a bad day?
