The Whistle Inn in Torfaen

Have probly gone to the whistle for best part of 3 years but we went recently in a party of 16 and have never felt so disappointed, food was awful, service was off putting, and drinks done wrong, made a complaint but obviously being the decent party didn't do it in front of other customers but now I wish I did, Told them the problems on nearly all the meals, told them about the attitude we received from the manager and also told them about the drinks, they replied , we sorry about the manager attitude but he had be suffering with a bad back, so he must of thought take it out on us, as for the meals well avoid the kebab, £17 for 3 small pieces of meat and I mean small and a small hard pita bread. I'm not going to mention the other faults on meals and drinks as I would be here all day. Woman who I chatted to on fave book messenger did not and just blocked me. So please don't build your hopes up as the whistle does flop in its EXPECTATIONS, This was the first time this as happened in all the visits tho and the others times fare play its been faultless but this time was enough to put us off for good. They did offer 4 free meals, but somehow I think I would of struggled to share them with 16 others.

What a lovely place the food is lush we stayed over in our motorhome they couldn't have been more accommodating we will be back great atmosphere and very friendly can't do enough for you down to earth can't wait for the outside bar

Me and my partner were just looking for somewhere to work and have a coffee and I would 100% recommend here, the restaurant has a gorgeous view of the surrounding landscapes and a small railway line and the vibe is so nice we spent 3 hours there until it got dark, the few staff members we spoke to were incredibly friendly also, if you’re fancying a late afternoon place to chill and have a drink, it’s a go to, we will definitely return for food sometime!

2 of us had the trio yorkshire wrap another had a bowl of chips and I wanted roast potatoes and gravy it was all amazing the only reason I didn't order more food was I had a leg of leg at home waiting but the staff were great the venue was amazing will definitely be back

Fabulous welcome! Arrived with many dogs to this busy pub on a wet day with complimentary doggy biscuits on arrival. The staff found space for us with no trouble. We had gorgeous chunky chips, drinks and complimentary curry and chips at half time during the Rugby match! A real gem. Will definitely return.

Food was very good, staff very friendly. Beautiful views out of the conservatory eating area, they have a park in the grounds where children can play.

Great nights stop over in our little campervan!! (Self contained no EHU).We had a lovely meal with our friend (who lives local) at the inn and the staff were extremely friendly and hospitable. After our meal we sat by the open fire, had plenty of drinks and chatted about the local history in Blaenavon. Would definitely visit again.

WHAT A GEM OF A FIND…feeling peckish following our trip to Big Pit visit, this is a must visit. Only a few minutes up the road and menu was plentiful and standard brilliant. Great service, warm welcome (without booking…many thanks), and even better fire burning next to our table! Will be back 🫶🏻

Parked overnight there £10 for the evening in my van. Bit muddy, but nothing terrible if parked right. Quiet evening, and they have toilets open throughout but not showers. ( what do you expect for a tenner ) Didn't sample the pub itself, unfortunately, but will be returning as theirs a burger with my name on it 😁

First time visit and it won't be my last. The food was outstanding with big portions. Highly recommend the Big Pit Burger.. Wow!! I wanted a dessert but couldn't fit one in!! Staff were super friendly, helpful and just so pleasant. Lovely views from the conservatory, small park for the kids and a great atmosphere. Already planning another visit.. That's how good it was!

Visited after a walk at keepers pond, lovely pub, very welcoming with an open fire, friendly welcome and food was excellent and arrived quickly, can't fault it 😀

Nice looking pub but didn't real like the place. The atmosphere was dead and the bar man despite me telling him twice what I wanted gave me 3bwronh drinks. We just left as soon as we could.

Lovely friendly staff and great banter with some of the locals. I had a lovely bowl of soup. Will go back again to have a meal, and possibly use their campsite

We went for Sunday lunch everything was perfect beautiful food ,and staff were very helpful and obliging.

Very friendly staff and owners. Took our orders even though kitchen was about to close and we had some recommendations. The food was excellent: Fish and chips Steak and Ale pie (the pastry was excellent) Chicken breast with potatoes. All very delicious. Very dog friendly too 😃 Would definitely come back if in the area!

Very nice pub great staff and the food was excellent - we also stayed at the campsite which was very good - building a new toilet/shower block not yet open but they leave pub toilets open all night for the campers. Take care in wet weather the bottom pitches to the left do get very wet although all have hard standings.

We camped here and loved it although the weather was not kind and the grass had just been cut and left in the field so grass cutting were everywhere... We had one meal here and the food was spectacular. Service and staff were also excellent. We all enjoyed the starters, mains and deserts and came away stuffed and happy. I have to knock off one star for the very low hygiene rating. Hopefully, they can 'up' this to a more reasonable rating. The toilet facilities could also do with a little TLC and as it is shared with the campsite it did run low of maintenance, soap and toilet paper.

Lovely staff, atmosphere was rather poor. Felt unwelcome so drank my drink and left, won't be returning. food wasn't anything to rave about either. Place has really changed and not for the better.

Camped overnight in our van. Camping site in renovation and pub a bit run down but hey we're in hard times and the staff and food made up for the aesthetics. A cheap stop over.

We were a party of six celebrating a birthday. The food was incredible with generous portions and good value for the price. Excellent service and friendly atmosphere. Well worth a visit!!

Came here for a long weekend camping in a campervan. Lovely location with stunning scenery. The shower and toilet block isn't up and running yet, but the pub toilets are open 24hrs (you don't have to go through the pub to get to them). The owners are new and are lovely. The pub itself is cosy with real fires and the bar staff are great. Food is basket meals at the moment, but they are good value and tasty. Also as an added bonus there is the Heritage railway that stops at the pub. Steam train service from the pub, how brilliant is that!!? There are also the Garn lakes just around the corner and lots of easy walks in the area as well as cycle trails. All in all a fab site and pub which is being restored by the new owners.....Will definitely return!!

Stayed in the campsite. Friendly welcome, pub closed unfortunately, but great food delivered from the village. Easy walk to 2 lovely lakes, one with fishing so I will bring my rod next time!

Absolutely beautiful food nice welcome by the landlord, food was on the table within fifteen minutes pipping hot, great wood burning fire.

Perfect for a camping stopover, nice location in the hills. Needed our levelling blocks though. Landlord very friendly and we enjoyed a few drinks in the bar with welcoming locals. No food on when we visited due to staff shortage but plenty coming in who wanted to dine so I'm sure the food is good. Will definitely stop again when visiting the area.

Just enjoyed a lovely lunch with my family. Food was delicious, service excellent and a great menu choice for both adults and kids. Location again absolutely stunning with some great views, and the Steam Railway station right next door. Get out here and support independent pubs. Highly recommend 👍

What a brilliant place to camp and stay, amazing views and walks all around. The pub hosts are very friendly and helpful. The prices are good and the food is tasty as well. A steam train stops right outside as well. We will revist soon.

Great drinks , lovely atmosphere

Great staff friendly and efficient. Great grub very tasty and a very wide range of drinks. They take social distancing seriously, tables well spaced out and very clean, and a book on the bar for you to write your names and phone numbers in. Chose our bottles of ciders from the chiller cabinet opposite the bar, great range of bottled ciders. I thought my spicy veg burger with chips was excellent, hubby thoroughly enjoyed his hunter chicken and chips. Great views in the warm conservatory of surrounding countryside, kids playing in the pub's playground, mini donkey greeting people and playing with the pub owners' 2 dogs. We didn't book but got lucky as there was only 2 of us and early evening, I recommend booking a table.

I stayed here at the campsite attached to the pub. The site was low priced due to having to use pub toilets. Also no hook ups available yet. But theses are easy to access. Nice and quiet the only noise is from a poorly maintained cattle grid on the main road when vehicles go over it. But you get used to it soon enough. It’s nice and close to some beautiful walks if you stay here. Soon there will be a new toilet block which will affect the camping price but it will be worth it. The pub is dog friendly. Toilets are very clean. Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere in the pub. I ordered stake and it was beautiful, the food was hot and tasty. I can’t fault the food at all. It was a good amount for the price. I would recommend staying here in a caravan or tent even though no hook ups available yet. I intend to come here again. Nice place to camp Nice place to eat. Has a 5 star food rating. Kids play area Can catch the steam train from the site when it runs

My first visit to this establishment it is the most spotless establishment I have in and the staff were amazingly friendly, would definitely goback and probably have their food as it looked delicious 😁

Nice people but unfortunately mediocre food. Very odd smell in conservatory restaurant and the restaurant was full of meat flies. Not awful, not good. Adequate but wouldn't go again.

Its a field on a slight incline. Facilities weren't open so i cant comment on them. Dogs were constantly barking and a donkey was braying regularly. Not a quiet site, even though i was the only one there.originally booked 4 nights but only stayed for 1 night.

We have ridden the railway 3 times twice for Christmas and once as a paw patrol day out and every time we have stopped for dinner at the whistle inn. The food is amazing reasonable prices and a very friendly atmosphere i would and I have recommended it to friends and family. I will be riding the train again this year and definatley stopping for food.

Had a lovely meal at the Whistle last Thursday. Faggots and onion gravy was Gert Lush the Boss said her Lamb Shank was spot on the Pub has 2 lovely open fire's and is Dog friendly nice vibe and Russell the landlord is sound

A limited menu choice for Sunday lunch by the unusual dish of faggots went down well. Good ipa beer too.

First time visiting in a long time ,6 of us for a friends meal , most of us had the steak , very nice indeed even though it was slightly over cooked ! Wanted medium hit well done , but hay ho it was nice and fresh !! Chips were great and mushrooms etc liverly meal fair play xx

A lovely spot to stop off for a rest along the way

Called in on off-chance that food was being served on Saturday lunchtime, nice friendly greeting and good menu choices - I had chicken, ham and leek pie which was packed with meat and very tasty served with pot of gravy and chips & peas- my other half had gammon with egg & pineapple and again chips & peas - both meals came out piping hot and well presented. Would certainly recommend and visit again

Very traditional pub, staff were very welcoming and friendly. Everything was clean and accessible. Good range of food available on the menu. The food was outstanding. The only wait on meals was cooking time. Which wasn’t long at all and we enjoyed our drinks. Food was hot, well presented and fresh. We plan to visit here again. Thank you!

Had a meal here this evening. We arrived and were promptly seated to any table we liked from the 3 staff who grunted as us when we arrived. Finding a seat next to the bar, we then waited in the hope of a drink or even god forbid a menu. To no avail. At risk of disrupting their chats or gins I approached the bar.... Where I was informed that the menus are over there somewhere. I ordered some soft drinks then got ready to explore the back room for the menu. And there they were a laminated piece of a4 glistening in the moonlight. I took them back to our table then thought where are the drinks. Looking up I saw them on the bar waiting for me to collect them as well. It was going well. Assuming that I would have to order at bar (I was right). I approached the bar to disturb them again. Apparently the wife is away so limited menu maybe should have told us that when we arrived but hey ho 2 pies barman don't spare the horses. Thank god the wife hadn't taken the microwave!!! Because food was quickly delivered. She may have to leave some instructions next time though. The pies arrived hotter than the surface of the sun. Also a hard crust on both which I imagine is hard to do, well I've never managed it. But at least they were both consistent so credit where its due. No one came to ask hows the meal or even clear the plates away. So all in all we seated ourselves, found our own menu condiments and cutlery. Collected our own drinks. The only think we didn't do was wash the plates to be fair and that was touch and go if we'd have stayed any longer honestly one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Do not go to this pub I will never go back or recommend it to anyone awful

Well where do I start ..upon entering all staff were standing at the bar chatting so had to ask if we could just find a table, we sat down expecting someone to serve us or at least bring us a menu but nothing, my partner then got up and went to the bar to order our drinks and was told by the owner where to get a menu and cutlery ( self service it apoears)..my partner then sat down with our menus and noticed our drinks had just been put on the bar and left there, so again we helped ourselves, we ordered food I had the steak pudding with mash and my partner the chicken pie , both meals had been warmed up to the extent that the pastry was rock hard the steak chewy no gravy inside the pudding and the mash was a gluttonous blob on my plate...in total we were in there for 40 minutes from start to finishI would say to anyone wishing to visit this place either DON'T as it seems all anyone wants to do is stand around talking and customers other than regulars are seen as a nuisance , or make sure the lady of the establishment is not away as it is clear no one has any customer service equitte in them and no one can use a microwave properly...appaling from beginning to end

Deco needs updating bit of tlc needed , but there is a good choice from the menu with generous portions , the food was lovely and they serve a good pint will visit again.

We visited this little gem last month and it was beautiful. Me and my partner had a surf and turf 8oz rump steak witch was cooked to perfection. Highly recommend. Very reasonably priced too
