We visited this lovely local pub whilst holidaying in the local area. We watched the rugby one evening then visited the following evening for dinner. We felt welcomed, and the food was delicious.

Found this spot towards the end of our stay in Berneray. Food was really spot on, I had French onion soup to start and haunch of venison with Arran mustard mash and cabbage. So good. Service may seem a touch abrupt but actually I think that’s wrong, they were really nice.

Plus points Ample parking Food was ok. We arrive prior to our booking approximately 20 minutes early told the lady we were a wee bit early but would have a drink and soak up the rustic ambience, I thought it was rustic but it was all old and knackered a bit like the unwelcoming women who served us, with the cuteness of someone who knew her next jobby was in fact going to be a hedgehog, not a wee flat roadside hedgehog one that had been living like a king in a wood with plenty of food and it had filled out accordingly. Eventually she came over dumped a couple of plastic wallet types on the table and shouted menus ! Then continued to chat to some locals avoiding eye contact with anyone who wanted served. When the food arrived it was actually OK But her not so warm welcome made us think she should have considered another career option

Good bar food. Clean. Nice menu. We had made a booking. Everything would have felt so different if any of the servers or staff had smiled, made a light joke or in any way looked as if they were pleased to be serving. That would have lifted the atmosphere such a lot and changed our experience.

Ohne vorherige Reservierung wurden wir schroff abgewiesen. Auf die Frage, ob wir hier zu Abend essen können, nur ein unfreundliches „No“. Kein „Sorry“… Vielleicht später am Abend? „No“. We had been looking forward to our lunch out here after having read so many good reviews. Sadly, we maybe hit a bad day. The hospitality wasn't up to the usual gushing friendly manner we have experienced in our many visits to the islands. I know costs have risen for us all, but £19 for 4 monkfish scampi with chips & peas seemed rather steep. The nicest part was the homemade tartare sauce, as the scampi were overcooked and the chips stodgy.

This pub felt rather soulless during our visit. Lockdown of course means pubs are having to trade with their hands tied to a degree, but like a few of the recent comments we found the staff slightly cold as if our (booked) presence during a quiet time was inconvenient. I wouldn't usually comment on such behaviour but the welcome and hospitality of all the other eateries we've visited in the Hebrides made it noticeably different! The food was really great however and for that I would return (post covid lockdown) in the hope that the teams spirits are lifted so i can leave a 5 star review! We had the deep fried prawns, veggie haggis and langoustines - all of which tasted fresh and delicious. Thanks again.

Took us ages to find this place as it looks just like an ordinary house, no sign, no advertising, but persevered as it’s just about the only place to eat out in this lovely wilderness. However, I could feel the icy atmosphere as we stepped through the door. Not a word of welcome from any staff. I had booked but they didn’t offer me a choice of seating area even though only one other table was occupied. We sat in the dark bar area feeling slightly uncomfortable and were served efficiently enough by silent staff who gave the impression of not wanting to be there (our local B&B host confirmed that, sadly, the Westford Inn had not weathered the lockdowns well). Food, however, was good with an imaginative menu. Monk fish, panko-crumbed, “scampi” was tasty and well-presented, as was my partner’s battered haddock. Well-kept local bitter.

The only warm welcome we received was from the fire. The short haired ‘lady’ behind the bar clearly didn’t do any hospitality training as I think we would of felt warmer in Antarctica! Didn’t smile, no conversation made, no offer of any recommendations to local beers & gins. In fact we wish we had walked out as she clearly didn’t want us to spend any time or money there. Possibly the worst experience we have had in a pub & let me tell you I’ve visited more than most. If I could give who ever the owner is a little bit of advice you need a new bar maid or maybe give her a job back of house so she doesn’t scare off any more customers.

Arrived here for a quick drink with a group of friends and couldn’t have been made less welcome. The barmaid was obviously not a local and none of the Hebridean hospitality we had experienced prior to this had rubbed off on her.Might I suggest a career change, preferably not in the hospitality trade, or perhaps behind the scenes where she doesn’t have to engage with the paying customers.

I am a regular visitor to the Isles and ate well here a few years ago. I ordered monkfish scampi in panko breadcrumbs. However as a regular user of panko in my own kitchen, the breadcrumbs were standard and not the light Japanese variety. The fish was rubbery and overcooked. My salad had seen better times. I commend the chips, tartare sauce and pea mash... all good but not exceptional. Next time I’ll have fish and chips and a beer. Coffee.... was it coffee???!!! North Uist has been welcoming to us poor pandemic dazed visitors but Westford, you need to sharpen up!!

The Woodlands Centre cafe is located in the grounds of Lews Castle and next to some amazing woodlands that you can walk along. The cafe is constructed of wood and built by the local staff and has an amazing large glass frontage. The chef cooks an amazing Scottish breakfast with great coffee served by very friendly and helpful staff. There are cakes and scones on offer which are very tasty. There is small shopping area as you enter from the car park and at the front there is play area for the kids. The food and service is well worth visit with great value for money.

Inspired by the “EatDrinkHebrides” trail map, popped in to collect a picnic lunch during a Hebridean road trip. We had the most amazing toasties and hot chocolate. Handy for the ferry. Worth a detour!!
