The West Bay Hotel in West Dorset

Lovely pub, our dog loved it! Popped in a few times during our week long holiday, good selection of beers and ciders, reasonably priced. Friendly team behind the bar, good choice of dog treats! Food was very nice, interesting menu. Will come back when in the area

Second time staying and eating here. This visit was better than the first. We arrived around 4ish and were greeted by a very helpful and pleasant chap who took our Rego plate for the car park then showed us to our room. We were told breakfast was included with the room and would we mind choosing what we would like for breakfast the following morning. I opted for the fry up, but also had steak and eggs as an option 😱 Room (Cooper) was super clean, well maintained and decorated. A nice touch was the very expensive toiletries provided. Bed and pillows were very comfy and supportive. Woke the next morning feeling refreshed and presented with one of the best full English brekkies I’ve had in a long time! All round a great experience! 5/5

This is the best place to eat in West Bay, friendly and helpful staff, the food is fantastic and always fresh and great beer.

We had booked a meal here on a short weekend away . We were not disappointed. Friendly atmosphere, and good decor . We had Dog with us and we were shown to a perfect table for the dog to sit under in a quieter area . Quick service , I had Mash , sausages and peas absolutely delicious and my partner a burger with fries which he said was the “best” . We had puddings that were also delicious , good Wine and Beer . Very reasonable prices also you can choose whether you add service charge . We had booked to go for Sunday Roast but sadly were called back home for family emergency but we will definitely return at some point .

Visited a few times over the years , its always been ok. No different this time round, staff pleasant enough , decor ok, food ok. These days though if i eat out and enjoy something but know i could have cooked it way better at home for half the cost i tend to get a bit annoyed. The rare rib eye was ok. I did wonder how it had been cooked though as their was definitely a slight taste to it that reminded me of going to a bbq where the host puts the food on before the lighter fluid or block smell has entirely burnt off. Not overpowering but enough to disappoint. It wasn't the best cut of meat either but you win some you lose some i guess. The rest of the party had standard pub fair which was nice enough but certainly nothing to rave about. Would happily visit again especially if someone else was paying the bill.

I haven't stayed at the hotel, nor have I eaten. I called in with 2 young children, a bit stressed out. As I'd lost my car key, found late that night. I'd like to say a massive thank you to the owner and his staff member. For allowing us to sit, as it was getting cold. This kind of help and welcome, speaks volumes to me. So thank you for helping me, in my stressed out state. Yes I'll return and definitely call in for a meal/drink. Your pub and facilitates are spotlessly clean. All things I look for, when eating out. Once again, thank you very much for your kindness.

Stop in for early tea at 5:30 without booking. Warm and friendly welcome and we were seated as a table of 6 in a private section of the restaurant (very nice!) Happy by that all the local Palmers beers were on draught having done the brewery tour earlier in the day! The food was very nice and there is a good kid menu too. Generous kids portions but not so for adults; daughter had fish and chips and she had more chips than me on the side of my burger. My burger with blue cheese and black pudding was nice but the slice of black pudding was thicker than the burger!🤔 There was a bit of an error with our dessert order but the manager recognised this and quickly resolved this. We enjoyed the visit.

Wish we'd found this place earlier in our holiday!! The food was amazing, really tasty, presented beautifully and reasonably priced! The service was excellent and we didn't have to wait long for our order to be taken or for the food even though it was fairly busy. Very friendly staff and lovely clean pub - no sticky tables here!!

Highly recommended, a warm welcome by all staff, dinner was 5*+, we live locally and this is the best eatery by far. Jamie and his team in the kitchen are the most talented of chefs, Claire and her team out front are amazingly pleasant, efficient and courteous at all times, just what a dining experience should be.

We haven’t been to the West Bay for a while but we’d heard that it had opened new management. What can I say … it felt like it was back to its best, the staff were attentive, food was amazing and the pub was lovely and bright - won’t be our last visit

The West Bay has recently reopened with new tenants and has had a major spruce up. We went for Sunday lunch and were seated in the restaurant area. This was comfortably laid out. Service throughout was very pleasant, quick, and efficient. We both had the roast beef lunch. The beef was from a local butcher and very tasty. Two trays of steamed vegetables had 6 vegetables for us. On the plate with the meat and huge Yorkshire pudding were roast parsnips and crisped kale so that made 8 in total. We had delicious deserts, cheesecake and, chocolate brownie. I had a couple of pints of Palmers Copper Ale that were in perfect condition. I thoroughly recommend the West Bay and we will return shortly.

Just had a fantastic stay at this beautiful pub/hotel. Clare and her family are fantastic hosts, so welcoming & attentive. The food was fantastic (dinner & breakfast), with great waiting & bar staff. The room we stayed in was beautifully decorated, so spacious and comfortable. We will definitely return! Good luck for the coming months, you’ll be a total success!

New owner at the pub, and have to say, great service, excellent food and of course Palmers beers. Would recommend everyone should give the West Bay hotel a try , pretty sure based on tonight’s experience you will not be disappointed

Outstanding Burger. The best my Husband and I think we have ever tasted. My seafood linguine was a delight because it wasn’t in the standard white wine sauce you get everywhere. Young lady behind the bar was a pleasure to interact with. Completely recommend a visit.

We've eaten here in the past when we go to visit an elderly relative in West Bay. On this occasion, we ate at 6.30 on a Tuesday evening. The pub was moderately busy, but it was a wet and windy night! We both had fish and chips which was okay. Portion size was adequate, but if you're a big, hungry man, it wouldn't necessarily be enough. Fish was quite nice, but chips a little underwhelming in my opinion. What I found extremely annoying was the addition of a 10% service charge automatically applied to the bill. It wasn't even mentioned by the member of staff. I always get it removed. If I want to add a tip, I will decide how much, not the restaurant thank you very much!!! My husband was slightly surprised when I paid the bill as it was. He queried it when we were outside, and I said I had paid the service charge because they had missed of a pint of beer and a large glass of red, so it was reasonable value, and one up to me! We won't return in the future.

We came here for lunch again and the food was good, the ambiance was good and the location was good.

We were looking forward to our meal but unfortunately the food we ordered was a little disappointing. We understand there was a shortage of kitchen staff and they were doing their best to cope with the food orders but it was average at best I'm afraid. On a positive note, the staff were lovely and polite but could probably use an extra pair of hands. Also the lighting was incredibly bright. It would be.much nicer if they could be dimmed. I don't think we'll be going back any time soon, which is a shame as we're local and like to support our pubs and restaurants.

We have eaten here before and enjoyed it by sadly not this time. Fish with the fish and chips was small and poor quality. Mushy was were squashed green peas. The Caesar saad was also a disappoinment. If did not expect to pay a full lager price for a lager shandy when more than had was Lemonade and the co!ivory 10% service charge was a surprise. It probably season the !end but I prefer to choose. We will not return.

We visited The West Bay Hotel on two occasions during our stay in Bridport. The staff were welcoming and Andrew, the chef, was exceptional. He took time to talk to us about our dishes and to find out about our son's dietary requirements. He even prepared special food with our son's ingredients. Been here few times with friends who live local and a great pub with great food on offer. New addition to the team Tyman and what a great addition ! Connected great with customers.

Myself, my husband and two children dined here and at first thought that there wasnt much choice on the menu and was a little disheartened! However we soon saw that it was quality over quantity. Our food was was amazing and portion sizes just enough for both adults and children. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. Definitely worth a visit!

Service excellent. Food TERRIBLE we both ordered crab. Asking first if they contained white crab meat. This meal was priced at over £18 The amount that arrived was smaller than I would expect for a starter but was advertised as a main course. a bit of bread already buttered when my friend specifically asked no butter. The bread was not very fresh. a tiny salad garnish not a sallad as advertised and a tiny scallop of mainly brown crab meat. We went and bought food elsewhere to fill our tummies afterwards. The worst meal I have ever been served.

The West Bay Hotel provides excellent bar food; a real novelty in West Bay. Four of us stayed in West Bay for a week and tried all of the hotels. On 29 June we tried the West Bay Hotel. For food and atmosphere this one stood out. 2 of us had fish dishes, 1 a steak and the 4th a salad. All meals were excellent. We asked to meet the chef ANDREW whom we discovered had been an accomplished sous-chef in some notable UK fine dining restaurants. Andrew had been with the hotel for only 8 weeks but had every intention of making it his home; he lived on the premises. A lovely pleasant man and a magnificent cook. Service was very good and provided by a most pleasant young man and young lady. I would highly recommend.

I had the sardines with a side of chips. Perfect. Went back after lunch and a wander to have the pudding before home. I had the poached pear. Again, spot on.

We had a fantastic meal here; really couldn’t be faulted. Food and service alike were perfect, would highly recommend!

Outstanding lunch here today - the fish finger sandwich was made with proper baker’s bread, lightly battered and perfectly cooked fish, and homemade tartare sauce. Sardines were also excellent. Delicious home-made deserts. Service friendly and attentive. Excellent value for money. To the person who reviewed complaining about the mussel shell - I’m sure it was a distressing incident, but if you’re going to order mussels, these things happen. Not fair to blame the kitchen for that.

When we arrived at the hotel for our three night stay the look of the hotel although it is under renovation was a bit concerning. The parking was ample. The hotel is circa 1739 so has old world charm. Our bed room was very nice and spacious with a large bathroom. We were supplied with a Nespreso coffee machine with plenty of pods that was a nice touch. There was four cans of mineral water That sadly were not replenished during our stay and some glasses to drink from would have been handy, and we did need to ask for toilet rolls when we ran out. The breakfasts were good with a varied selection. We had one evening meal that was very nice but being the only couple eating in the restaurant it certainly lacked atmosphere but that may well be sign of the time and the sad state of the country. We found the staff and management very nice and friendly and would like to see the hotel when the renovation work is finished but at the moment feel the accommodation is somewhat over priced.

When last here I commented on the prices which were high for the quality on offer. On a recent visit I can report that the prices haven't changed much but the quality had improved considerably to a point where I can say it was the best PUB meal in a long while. If visiting for a meal make sure you use the restaurant as the bar area was not all that suitable (or pleasant when we were there) for eating. I also would comment on the poor service - not the young girls fault I am sure but service is more than just plonking the food on the table and disappearing.

We all enjoyed our lunch. most of us chose from the two or three course lunch and very good it was too. Plenty of food, well cooked and very tasty. Good value.

Late Sunday lunch here for 9 was absolutely great, friendly staff, good wine, beer and food,from roast beef with all the trimmings to fresh fish.My shell fish linguine with garlic and chilli delicious although I did need an extra sprinkling of chilli flakes!Very happy to recommend this place, sad we live too far away.Sorry no photos of the food all devoured too quickly

We ate here a few weeks ago and had the sunday roast, veg was undercooked, roast spuds were huge and not cooked in the middle, it was late when we ordered so decided to give them another chance when we were in Westbay a few weeks laterI was tempted by the seafoof curry on the specials board but at 18 quid and not being that hungry I gave it a miss and ordered the prawn and crayfsh cocktail with a side of onion rings which came in at 15 quidwe waited 40 minutes for this to arrive with a bowl of the soup of the day, there were only 4 other people in the pub so I assume the delay was waiting for the tiny and rubbery frozen prawns to quick defrost, pretty shocking really when you consider there is an award winning, top class fishmonger selling the local catch literally across the roadThe onion rings were fresh cooked but unfortunately swimming in oil and still repeating

We are staying in West Bay and decided to try the West Bay hotel for a family meal. We both had the Steak with cheese sauce, cooked to perfection and all the trimmings lovely. Our son had the homemade burger and loved it. We shared the delicious cheeseboard and our son had the Sticky Toffee pudding with ice cream which was amazing. If you are in West Bay area, this is a must go to place for a meal. Staff really welcoming and a lovely evening had by all.

Booked a meal here with the family for my Birthday. Vist quite often and usually not bad. The place was quite quiet and one young lady appeared to be doing everything from managing the bar to taking orders to clearing tables. No wonder she smashed a glass behind the bar she needed 6 pairs of hands!! A man was loitering behind the bar but seemed unable to move. We ordered starters and mains and a bottle of wine and soft drinks. The bottle of wine was plonked on the table with 2 glasses and the lid still in tact and screwed on. The soft drink of appletizer was also put on table as it had come out of the box with lid still screwed on etc. Far from good service. By the way on reading a previous review the tables are definitely tacky and not over worn by a strong cleaning! Starters arrived and were again plonked down with us having to save the wine glasses on more than one occassion. They were ok to be honest but £12 for 3 scallops extremely pricey in this pub setting. The poor girl amongst serving at the bar taking others orders and wiping a table due to a complaint by people also eating at a tacky table then bought the mains one by one. On receiving the 3rd meal it was incorrectly served as a fish burger when a beef burger had been ordered. She did aplogise bless her and said she would get it changed. I appreciate this is the only option but this left two of us eating and one watching. The man who I assume was incharge failed to address this mix up with us and continued well doing nothing!!! I appreciate that food cooked fresh would take a while and perhaps an aplogy at this point or an offer to return our other meals so that we could enjoy a family meal would have be just. We had finished when the burger arrived and my wife had gone past the point of eating and we all felt extremely uncomfortable about the situation and how it was being handled. We sent the burger back and told the man we no longer wanted this. He offered us puddings but why would three of you want puddings even if they were free when only two of you had had mains. I went to the bar to settle the bill as the whole evening was a horrendous disaster. I raised my distaste again at the bar with this man when paying and he stated that I was a liar and that we had ordered the fish burger and that his staff were correct!!!! I couldnt really believe what I was hearing as I am sure the other diners could not either!!! This man who had done nothing productive all evening now decided to insult his customers. The bill was £86!!!!! That was for 3 starters and two mains and a cheap bottle of wine. Extremely pricey for the setting, the ambience and the celebratory evening ruined. I did write to the manager and she again said the staff were right but aplogised that we felt we were called liars. She said she would ensure that if we DID return there that we would have a better evening!!!! Do you really think that I would hand over any more monies to this place after this disaster of service and evening. How that young lady can work there amazes me but full marks to her. Its true what the locals in the other reviews are saying, this place has gone downhill in the last 6 months. Luckily for them they will probably get by on tourists but as for locals we are learning extremely quickly to avoid at all costs!

Quick review, food was good and staff very friendly, the only down side was the garden area, it was rather tatty looking which is a shame.

Called in here following a walk along the beach and over the cliffs and wanted some seafood. Spoilt for choice with the fish specials on the board, I could quite happily have eaten any of them. We opted for the seafood curry with pak Choi and cashews and as my husband has a nut allergy they made sure his was nut free. It was delicious, we added a bit more salt but apart from that it was perfect. Not too spicy to over power the flavour of the fish but gave a lovely warming finish. We would definitely have this again if it’s on the menu. Staff were friendly, happy to help and have service with a smile. We’ve eaten here many times before and I’m sure we will in the future.

An unplanned visit to this place had a spectacular result! I went out to eat with my family this evening who all decided that they wanted fish and chips at one of the shacks in West Bay. I had my heart set on shellfish / seafood so decided to go it alone and headed to the nearest pub for a refuel. Enter The West Bay. The staff made me feel totally at ease as a solo female diner and recommended the moules frites - served with sourdough. I must say, I wasn’t disappointed! A dish big enough for two people really, it was so tasty I managed to eat most of it - although I struggled to walk back to our holiday home afterwards! Would highly recommend this place.

Popped in with friends for an afternoon pint in the sun and upon entering the bar was confronted with the 3 staff members eating Domino's Pizza from boxes on the bar next to a table of customers eating food they'd bought and paid for, whilst nearly every other table was uncleared and covered in dirty glasses...

Looking forward to a nice meal with the family after our last visit. Sadly standards had dropped severely. No thought was put into the table set-up for a large party. Put on two tables back to back. The tables were sticky. I put my phone on the table and almost lifted the table picking the phone up. The food was not up to a standard l would have expected. The vegetables were over cooked and the fish was small and bland. To end the meal we were never offered a sweet. Don't think l will be visiting again unless l here favourable reviews.

Visited on a few occasions during our weeks holiday, each time there was a different person behind the bar and all were very friendly, a decent piint of Palmer's ipa and all was well with the world.

Ignore all the positive reviews prior to the change in ownership/management/staff/cooks that had this pub firmly rooted as the best pub in town (see my previous review back on 15 November 2016) this place has fallen from grace spectacularly.

We were a little uncertain about eating here after earlier reviews but The West Bay is as good as it was before. The fish course (we had pan fried sea bass with new pots, artichoke, sun dried tomatoes and green beans, really really good. Both starters were good too, main course followed by Eaton mess, yum. Really glad we tried you again. Well done West Bay Hotel we'll be back.

The food was glorious, amazing options for all and also catered for my veg preference with the best Nut roast I have ever tasted, if you can find larger onion rings I will be amazed, the pub is beautifully decorated inside and they even include where the food is sourced locally. The staff were fantastic and very welcoming which really made for a lovely dining experience, I really will be back depute the 3hr trip for home. Definitely worth it, and all within 150 metres of the beach,

We went here with our dog for a meal. The atmosphere is wonderful with great photographs of the bay all around the walls. The food was the best we had while staying in Dorset with local fish dishes and a great vegetarian selection. The staff were so friendly and helpful, we loved it here and wished we had had time to go again.

We try to stop at The West Bay Hotel when we are in the area. The cosy atmosphere inside and the large beer garden to the rear offers great alternatives whatever the weather.

A quiet early evening dinner that left us wondering how the pub managed to get such a good cook. She or he knows what they are doing. We had the special of the day with Eton Mess as dessert. Great quality and excellent value

We live locally and decided to have a catch-up chat over a meal.

I am not a fan of West Bay. It is situated on an outstandingly beautiful coast line, yet has been cursed by architectural mediocrity. A failed 19th century speculative development by GWR to create a seaside resort with poor 20th century additions. A potentially pretty harbour surrounded by car parks and fish and chip kiosks. Why is it that on the other side of the Channel Normandy and Brittany have a delightful gastronomic scene specialising in delicious seafood, and what we get is fish and chips? The fishermen are fishing the same sea, so the difference must be in the skills of the restauranteurs and, alas, an undemanding public............

Excellent lunch today, seems to be new staff and new menu. Very busy but still attentive and friendly service and two faultless main courses.

The West Bay hotel restaurant used to have a good reputation and on previous visits had been fine. It's been some time since I was last there and so this visit with friends was disappointing. Staff were lovely and we had a nice table away from the bar. Two friends ordered beer battered fish and chips. It was a case of hunt the very thin fish hidden in batter. My whole plaice in butter was overly buttered so the entire meal swimming in grease. A shame.

Although the lunch menu seemed small and the pub was quiet, we were greeted with a friendly smile and service was prompt. My wife chose the traditional Ham and eggs which was tasty and I went for the fish pie. Little disappointed that all the pie came with was just green peas.
