The Wensleydale Heifer Restaurant in Richmondshire

We were staying here on the wonderful seasonal offer the place is lovely and very cosy.after pre dinner drinks we were shown to a nice table in the main dining room. Instead of the seasonal menu we both went off the alacarte menu our starters were chicken liver parfait and a smoked salmon new potato tian with crab and both dishes were delicious. For mains we both had their famous seafood pancake it was a little under seasoned and a bit watery accompanied by a nice Sauvignon blanc and excellent service.

Great place for any occasion, would recommend to anybody, great food, also their rooms are fab, although we didn’t stay this time, just stayed for dinner.

Our favourite place to visit when we travel up north to see the mother in law ! The service is always exceptional! And the food is outstanding, always so fresh and flavourful! With presentation to match ! Will always be our first thought when visiting

Lunch club: great food as always. The stars are the staff, always go above and beyond. Stayed and eaten here many, many times. The superb standard never fails to impress.

Lunchclub menu for October was splendid - the four of us thoroughly enjoyed it! The rest of the party had the normal menu and thought it was delicious. Vince's wine recommendation was spot on as always too. Thank you for making mine and mum's birthday treat so special. One comment when we got home from someone who had never been to the Heifer before was "I get why you love going, that food was amazing"!!

We went for a meal on the 31st August to celebrate my parents 56th wedding anniversary! We had a fantastic meal!! The food was amazing and I would absolutely recommend the Maple lobster salad!! The staff were very attentive and were extremely pleasant! We had mentioned that we were celebrating and we had a helium balloon, card and little gift left at the table! The restaurant is a fabulous environment with Lucy Pittaway art adorning the walls!!! Overall a fantastic night and we will definitely be back!!!!! Thanks for a wonderful evening!!!

Another visit to the Wensleydale Heifer for Saturday lunch, absolutely exceptional meal, thank you to the remarkable people involved, truly the best hotel & restaurant in Yorkshire.

From the incredibly friendly staff to the oysters, steak, champagne and monster fish and chips, absolutely no doubt this was one of the best birthday evenings my wife and I have had. Thanks for everything, it was flawless, we even learnt something new about the oyster selection! My food intolerances very discretely accommodated alongside very knowledgeable seaters, servers and sommelier. Honestly can’t thank you guys enough and we hope you continue to enjoy the well deserved reputation you work hard for and thoroughly deserve.

Excellent service, Good foods and wines can be a little pricey, would go again, dislike 10% service charge which is optional. But put on the bill, So just ask to defer it when paying.

We stayed at The Heifer for 1 night for my Husbands 50th birthday (a gift from our friends) and it was a lovely experience. The Gin Room was nicely decorated with small treats in the room on arrival. The staff were welcoming and the food amazing. Thanks for a great night away.

Our 7th visit to the Wensleydale Heifer and as always everything was exceptional from check in to check out. The quality of food, wine and staff are outstanding and we look forward to returning again in summer and around Christmas time.

I booked a table as a surprise for Wife’s birthday , after driving about 80 miles for it we were not disappointed the roast beef was fantastic , presentation superb . The lemon meringue was excellent and presentation superb . My only regret is that I never topped it off with a room for the night. Thank you for a lovely meal.

Great service and amazing food. Lamb Rump is the best I’ve ever tasted.. The asparagus starter was cooked to perfection as was my wife’s goats cheese. Service was very pleasant but not overbearing.

In January we were in need of something special to look forward to. We chose the Heifer.My wife had a birthday in early April, so we booked a three day stay 6-9 April. The offer price was £850.00 for B&B.On arrival we became aware of a all inclusive Spring deal which was a better option than the offer price, were allowed to take advantage on two of our three day stay. When the invoice for our stay was presented it did not reflect the deal we had expected, it quoted the original offer price. A discussion ensued with the hotel which was most unfortunate, resulting the staff member withdrawing from the conversation.I then engaged with another staff member.I had some feedback about lack of food quality with some of the meals and the fact that americano coffee was not available at breakfast.A revised invoice was presented, which contained further inconsistencies, by this time I was getting fed up and upset so I paid the bill and left.

Delicious beautifully presented food in comfortable relaxed surroundings. Friendly attentive staff. Well worth a visit.

Wonderful food, staff and atmosphere for our Sunday Lunch visit today. After a walk our friends and ourselves had 2 beef lunches plus 2 chicken. Everything was wonderful. Although full we all had puds which were really good and wonderfully presented.

Visited many times before but this was the first lunch club - French themed - Champagne Cocktail and fresh bread with a ham canapé which was so delicious I wanted more this was followed by mussels mariner, chateaubriand cooked perfectly followed by Crème Brûlée excellent...

Visiting the Heifer is always a treat. The staff are friendly, helpful and considerate, the atmosphere is modern and convivial. Highlight is the variety and quality of the seafood, which is exceptionally fresh and beautifully prepared. The puddings are a delightful and not too heavy...

Visited with wife. Both our starter and main courses were amazing. We couldn’t have wished for a better meal. Sadly, my favourite dessert; stick toffee pudding wasn’t available on the day.

Considering that there was a large (14 person) birthday party taking place directly behind us, the staff did an amazing job at keeping them contained and not making us feel like we had intruded on someone else’s event. The choices of starters and desserts were fantastic and all course tasted incredible. My criticism would be that the options for the main course weren’t as exciting as the starters or desserts but they were cooked to perfection. Finally thank you to the lovely staff who gifted my future son his own little heifer, it honestly made our night!

A few weeks ago an old school friend told me that he and his wife would be staying in Askrigg for week. Given that we live in North Yorkshire and hadn’t seen them since before COVID (4 years) their invitation to meet up was a great idea…but where to meet for lunch? All my favourite haunts in the area were closed on Mondays, so my friend did an internet trawl and came up with the Wensleydale Heifer. It’s not a place I had been to previously, but seemed highly rated, and we’re always looking for new places to try in the Dales. There was a warm welcome for us and our two small dogs, and our friends were already seated in the cosiest of alcoves when we arrived. We were sitting in the ‘dog friendly’ part of the pub, and not in the main restaurant, but where we were was great…very comfortable and laid back. Not having seen each other for a while the menu was ignored in a megastream of initial chat. The waiter came back a few times to see if we had decided and to take our order, very patiently I thought, and on his third attempt we had by then made our selection from the table d’hote menu. I had the soup to start…a kind of lobster bisque, but that under describes just how good it was. Homemade, rich and warming, just what you need on a cold winter’s day. Two of our group had Caesar salad, and the fourth person the mussels. The salad was beautifully presented, and pronounced excellent by the two, the mussels could have been a main course, so generous was the portion. On to mains. I had fish and chips which was just right, with the fish served as goujons in a light and tasty batter. Two had the poussin, and the final plate was sea bass. All beautifully cooked and tasty. We still had room for pudding, and why not? Three of us chose the winter berry Eton Mess, and one sticky toffee pudding. The empty plates at the end of the meal were testament to how tasty it all was. This was really great quality food, in a comfortable relaxed environment. The staff were friendly and ‘on the ball’ and even found time to make a fuss of the dogs. Also, this being Yorkshire, it was pleasing that it didn’t break the bank. It’s also nice to know of little quirks when visiting a new place. The excellent display of seaside postcards from a bygone era in the loos may also add to your entertainment. It’s amazing what they got away with in the 50s and 60s. We’ll definitely go back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Wensleydale Heifer restaurant yesterday! We found the staff very friendly and the food in the lunchtime set menu was excellent 🤩 we were in the bar area as we had our little springer spaniel with us, she enjoyed the biscuits and the drink of water at our table. Lovely touch, keep doing what you’re doing! We will definitely be back when we are back staying at Sunhill Lodges. We put a recommendation in the visitor book for future visitors. Popped in for a lunchtime brew and pint. Superb hospitality, even the dog was made welcome. Lovely to warm up by the fire before continuing our walk. The food smelt yummy and the menu looked amazing. Must go back and eat next time I’m in the area.

First ever visit to the Wensleydale Heifer and was not disappointed. Spotlessly clean inside and lovely decor. Great attentive service and delicious food. Fairly busy for a midweek lunchtime, in what is a fairly rural area. Will definitely be back, next time I'm in the area. Fish and chips, followed by caramelised rice pudding and blackberry compote.

This was our first visit to the Wensleydale Heifer, despite living only 40 minutes away and knowing your excellent reputation. We treated ourselves to your Gourmet Package. This appears to be expensive, but is actually excellent value for money, being almost 24 hours of high quality, delicious food, first class standards of service and excellent wines. Prior to arriving I was mildly apprehensive that things may be a bit formal, but these concerns were immediately allayed on arrival. Throughout the stay we were treated with friendly informality, we felt welcomed but also special. You have an amazing team, skilled, attentive and also friendly. Sitting in front of the fire planning our tasting menu was a delight & the meal itself managed to surpass that. The portions are generous when compared to some tasting menus and this meant I wasn't able to do the delicious desserts justice, although I did manage to taste them all. The room was lovely and just as described and we slept well with breakfast the following morning being of the same high standards. We will be back in the near future and I can heartily recommend the Gourmet Experience. We have stayed in many hotels in the UK and around the world and it is very very rare that I have nothing to criticise, so if you could possibly arrange for better weather next time I'd be grateful

Great atmosphere, excellent food with lots of choice together with friendly, efficient staff, made for a great lunch. The chicken liver parfait was delicious as were the tempura prawns. Try the truffle mayonnaise too. Definitely recommend

We are regulars even though we have to travel 25 miles to get to you. Last night was a great experience from start to finish. The warm welcome, the chat, the banter, the drink, the food.
