My husband and I visited The Welsh House in Cardiff this afternoon and opted for their 3-course festive menu. The food was absolutely gorgeous—each course was beautifully presented and full of flavor. I also sampled several cocktails, all of which were delightful and perfectly crafted. The service was excellent despite the restaurant being extremely busy, with the staff working flat out to keep everything running smoothly. However, I must mention the limited seating; it felt a little cramped. They turned away numerous people who did not have reservations as well. The floor space could be put to much better use with extra tables added to facilitate more seating and thereby make the company more money. Additionally, every time the door opened, we were hit with a chilly blast of air, which was less than ideal on a cold evening. Overall, The Welsh House delivered on food, drinks, and service, but a bit more comfort would make it even better. We’d happily return for the delicious menu and warm hospitality!

Disappointing Experience at The Welsh House, Cardiff Our visit to The Welsh House was a letdown from start to finish. When we arrived, our table wasn’t ready, which wasn't the end of the world, it's christmas and so this happens, but there was no apology or explanation. We were asked to wait at the bar and just shuffled to the side. To make matters worse, there was only one person serving at the bar. We decided to try the roast, but it was utterly tasteless. The only part I could stomach was the Yorkshire pudding, which says a lot about the quality of the meal. For a place that presumably prides itself on its Welsh heritage, the food did not deliver, and I truly hope this isn’t what visitors to Wales, believe represents Welsh cuisine. The atmosphere was stale and lacked any vibrancy. While the decor seemed to aim for something traditional, it came across as dark, tacky and uninspired. The one redeeming feature was our friendly waiter, who did their best to make the experience pleasant despite everything else falling short. Unfortunately, even great service couldn’t salvage such a disappointing visit. I wouldn’t recommend this place and would strongly recommend anyone to stay clear.

Had a works Christmas lunch here. There were a lot of us, so I managed my expectations, but the food just wasn't up to the price tag. Soups were served cold when they should have been hot, portion sizes were much too small and the mains were all luke warm at best when served (but tasted nice). I didn't have dessert but those that did didn't seem too impressed. Disappointing all things considered.

We were seated at the corner, by the window. Despite multiple attempts to get the staff’s attention (and they were quite a few serving), we were ignored. I had to get up from my seat and go speak with a waiter and order our food. The food was tasty specially the cockles and it came relatively fast. After having the main course, we had to once again go up to the waiter in order to get the dessert menu. We chose the dessert and were told that the kitchen was closed. This was very disappointing having in mind all the time we had waited. As we were leaving, we noticed that the group sitting next to our table was also unhappy with the service and complained about missing some of the drinks they ordered. We hope they improve their service otherwise they might lose customers.

Nice place in the center of Cardiff. We had savory Welsh cakes, pork ribs in barbecue sauce and leek gratin. The ribs were very soft and tasty; the leek gratin and Welsh cakes were definitely full of butter, so they were a little heavy and doughy for my taste. The boy who served us was very kind and very nice.

Ordered a plant based burger, when it arrived I took a bite and immediately called one of the waitresses over to express my concern that the burger wasn’t plant based and pointed out why, she assured me it was and they just sue similar products. I took her word for it and had another bite before she checked with the kitchen who confirmed it wasn’t a plant based meal served to me.

Terrible birthday experience for my best friend and group of 8. Our booking had been cancelled on arrival so we had to wait an hour for a 6 table to be made to an 8. Watched another group of 10 or 12 turned away too despite having their confirmation on them. 2 of the group ordered a fish & chips- out of fish, choose something else! 2 more pairs ordered the sharing roast (beef turkey pork) but there was no pork so extra of the other meat promised - it didn't arrive but one slice of lamb instead between 2. Other food was cold and extremely poor quantity and quality. We had to ask for extra potatoes (frozen, aunt Bessie style and fried- and cold) and extra cauliflower cheese and there was no gravy provided. There were no yorkshire Puddings "sorry we're out" either when we asked. Then towards the end of the meal we noticed some coming out of the kitchen for other tables, challenged and we're brought some after all - like roast dinner tapas! Vegetables consisted of mushed carrot and swede, and frozen peas. Cold. Staff were only fussed with procedure and who said what/did what rather than trying to resolve anything, and we noticed at least two people working in the kitchen (it's on open view) with no chef whites, hair nets or PPE- an adidas top and one in a green hoodie poking his nose. A totally memorable birthday for all the wrong reasons. Won't be back here. Poor quality, poor value and cold.

Honestly the worst service we have had. We prebooked our meal. Turned up waited and then sat down, waitress asked us about 5 times what we had ordered, coming back and for asking us to point out what we wanted on the menu. Why the waitress didn’t have a notepad and pen I will never know. You can’t expect people to remember what 6-8 people want! Secondly then proceeded to get the food wrong! We had almost finished our food while one person on the table still hadn’t had their food. Wrong food almost put down in front of us from the table opposite. Food - beef probably the only thing that was nice / the rest watery, cold, hard and clearly left under a heat lamp or in the oven almost all day. Manger seemed very unbothered more interested in the party that was happening out the back. Ok we may have had a reduction on the bill and drinks taken off. But that would have been almost over £150 worth of food and drinks if service and food was done correctly. Plus we would probably ordered deserts. We were offered free drinks and deserts but opted not to because after that option, we didn’t see anyone for another 20 minutes to half hour after being spoken to. No food check backs where done either! we started clearing our own table for someone to come and collect the dishes so I could we could get the bill. Shambles!

The food is very overpriced for the portion size, simplicity of the dishes and the quality. I have been on two occasions since they opened last year, and the front of house service has been incredibly poor each time. Over 20 min after been seated before anyone acknowledged us or offered us a drink. Both times staff were were just casually laying up tables, chatting amongst themselves and demonstrated little attention or care to the customers. On my second visit with my son, when we came to order, I asked if they could do smaller portions for children, only then did they say we do indeed have a children's menu, seems it just wasn't offered to us. We asked if it was okay with the kitchen could our toddler be served first and we'll have our starters and mains after, that i'd be able to feed him then enjoy my foot still hot. They assured us that it won't be any trouble at all, but then served his food with our starters and before any of us had finished proceeded to serve the main with such urgency it was simply placed on the table and they walked off before we could say much about it. Then meaning we had plates engulfing the table and was wrestling a toddler to stop him putting his hands into this buffet in front of us all. the food wasn't particularly hot anyway so safe to say by the time I ate my salmon it was stone cold, and definitely not worth £20. Very salty. It's a great shame as this venue has the potential to be amazing, the the quality of service and time management from the staff is a huge let down not to mention the delusions of grandeur on the food and its prices. They also have the cheek to add service charge as standard, which many people were requesting to be removed! Receipt image is for 2 adults and 15 month yod.

I recently visited the Welsh House for an afternoon tea, and it was a disappointing experience. Despite it not being busy and having booked in advance we waited 40 minutes for our food to arrive, and we were served tea 20 minutes before anything else. The sandwiches were dry with minimal filling, and the cheese and leek scones were turned upside down to hide the burnt sides. We expected rissoles as they were on the menu, but received cheese bites instead. The Welshcakes tasted pre-packaged, lacking any freshness. The only highlight was the brownie, which was nice. Overall, not worth the hype or the wait.

We came in for Sunday dinner and all the food was brilliant. However, we had to find our own drinks menu, were sat at the table a good 20 minutes before anyone came to take our Order. It was not until after we had ordered the sharing roast that our server came back and enquired if we had been told that the kitchen was out of beef (we hadn’t been). While I was waiting for the meal, I had a good view of the service window and one server who kept scratching their hair in a manner which implied they had lice and another who kept rubbing their nose and then handling plates. Add to this someone who seem to think it was a good idea to treat the lights over the service hatch like a tether ball batting them back-and-forth between themselves and whoever is on the other side (I wonder how clean those lights are), another server who seemed to be on the phone constantly and the fact that we had to disappoint our young son and not get dessert because it was half an hour after we finished eating when our server came round to ask how we were doing much less ask if we wanted the desert menu and when we asked to pay and leave they had to doublecheck if we have been give a bill. From the looks of these reviews our experience doesn’t appear to have been typical, but it was certainly deeply disappointing. The courtesy removal of the service charge we were offered was appreciated but should not have been necessary.

We visited for dinner last night and were a bit disappointed. They’d just started a new menu, which was frustrating as we’d chosen the restaurant because my mum had already picked something from the old menu. The new options were limited, and the food wasn’t great. The Caesar salad was okay but just a whole lettuce, not chopped. The chips were overly oily, and the pork chop had no seasoning and tasted burnt. My mum had the lamb chop and wasn’t impressed either. While I appreciate their use of local suppliers, the menu change let them down this time, and for the quality, it was quite expensive. It seems like a place that has potential but fell short due to the recent menu changes and quality of the dishes.

Made a reservation here for the Saturday I was here in Cardiff with my bf. Before going I was a bit sceptical, as some of the reviews I had seen on TikTok didn’t say it was very good. My bf also didn’t really want to go, but the other options that we wanted to go to were fully booked out. Despite what I had seen online, I thought my meal tasted delicious and my beef had been cooked perfectly. I got the Welsh Beef rump steak served with chunky chips sprinkled with Halen Môn Sea Salt and a side of Caesar salad. I thought the beef had been cooked perfectly. My bf got the Leg of Welsh Lamb served with crushed new potatoes, honey-glazed carrots and minted gravy. He really enjoyed his meal, although he didn’t want to admit it to me at first. Probably as he was quite adamant that the food wasn’t going to taste nice. I also got the Grazed gooey chocolate brownie with Mario's plant-based vanilla ice cream to share between us two which we both really liked. The only problem I had here was that the waiter taking out order, wasn’t really giving me time to speak, which was a bit annoying. Other than that, I would definitely recommend this place for anyone that is wanting to try Welsh food.

I had a bad experience at the restaurant across the street due to which I chose this place to try authentic Welsh cuisine and it's the best decision I made. The staff were friendly, hospitable and checked if we needed anything. I initially wanted to try lamb cawl but they only serve it in lunch, so a heads up on it. I had shepherd's pie with steamed vegetables which was amazing. The crushed new potatoes were good but lacked seasoning. The welsh rarebit had a great presentation and was way better than any grilled cheese sandwich I ever had. My server was nice enough to arrange a welsh cake without any alcohol content. We came for Sunday lunch- my sister and I shared the Roast platter- portion size was good for the price! Food was nice- a standard Sunday roast however £5 for a small portion of cauliflower cheese was quite disappointing. We were served by various staff and they were all excellent very friendly and couldn’t do enough for us! Unfortunately we were sat right by the kitchen window- pretty much the whole time we were there the Chef was shouting service very passive aggressively. It was excessive how often and loud he was shouting- this ruined the atmosphere for us. We felt uncomfortable and sorry for the staff running around trying to do other things whilst the chef is screaming service multiple times a minute.

Visited with friends after the Cardif half marathon, very much looking forward to food here recommended by many, sad to say our visit was not up to standard. The booth we was seated at had an horrendous smell of sewage seeping from behind the bench along with the sound of constant running water and people using the bathroom, we informed the lovely table staff that we wasn’t impressed with the situation to be basically ignored by the impossibly to miss, management. When a conversation finally happened with said manager we was given a bull crap story of why it is what it is. He was very much avoiding the subject deflecting the problem to another business when it was clearly the buildings problem. No compensation offered as an apology for the absolute disgusting stench, hence why I’m writing this review. Really disappointed with this place, hadn't been here before so thought we'd give it a go. As this place is called "The Welsh House" and all geared around being Welsh it was very disappointing to see that the menus were not bilingual. When questioned why are there no translations etc we were told "well no one would understand it as no one speaks Welsh " WTAF ..he said the only people who come in here are tourists and as they wouldn't understand what's the point. As I counted to 10 I simply pointed out that 1. Im a Welsh speaker and currently sat in your establishment 2. it would make the customers / tourists see that we in Wales have our own language and to simply embrace it and not be dismissive of it especially when you are promoting the brand of being "The Welsh House" we asked the individual where he was from and when he said England it summed it all up really, totally dismissive of the Welsh language. I won't be dining here again it's fair to say !!! Food is average, there are better places on St.Marys street.

We dined at The Welsh House in Cardiff for an evening meal, and the experience was delightful. The restaurant serves authentic Welsh cuisine, and the atmosphere is cosy, perfect for a relaxed meal. For starters, we had a variety of dishes: the potato leek soup, which came with a small loaf and a hearty slab of Welsh cheese, was deliciously comforting. The warm cockles with bacon on sourdough bread were incredibly tasty, adding a wonderful salty richness. The potted pig with toasted bread tasted like high-quality ham—flavorful and satisfying. Moving on to the mains, we enjoyed the pork belly with roast potatoes, where the pork was succulent and cooked to perfection. The Welsh leg of lamb with potatoes and vegetables, served in a savoury gravy, was equally flavorful and tender. We also tried the shepherd's pie, topped with crispy mashed potatoes and served with seasonal vegetables (peas, broad beans, and cabbage). The shepherd's pie had a nice texture, though I found it slightly too salty for my preference. For dessert, we indulged in a chocolate brownie, which was perfectly gooey on the inside and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a fresh strawberry. A sweet, satisfying way to end the meal. The service was excellent, with attentive and friendly staff. Overall, The Welsh House is a wonderful restaurant, and I highly recommend it for those looking to experience traditional Welsh flavours.

I had been wanting to go here for ages after following on Instagram and wanting to try some really good Welsh food and experience some.great Welshness. Overall, we were left disappointed. This is no way a scathing review as I totally support what you guys are doing for Wales and promoting Welsh culture. From the moment we arrived the restaurant felt a bit like a pub and seemed to have a grubby feel to it. The front had parasols promoting Italian beer rather than a Welsh version. We were greeted by some lovely staff but none of them gave us a "S'mae" or "Prynhawn da". It would have been so nice to have some phrases spoken. We were seated and ordered drinks and looked through the menu. I really wanted to try as much interesting food as possible but the taster menu was just too much to spend on something that we didn't know what it would be. I ordered the Cheese Welsh Cakes and the Laverbread and Cockles and my husband ordered the Shepherd's Pie. I went to the toilet whilst we waited and was a bit shocked at how dirty they were. The toilets are downstairs which is an experience in itself to get to, but the toilets were really bad. The floor was wet, the cubicle had a rusty toilet roll holder on the floor, full of toilet rolls covered in urine where people had missed. I washed my hands (bottle of Carex empty) and went to leave but couldn't get out of the room because there was no door handle. A couple of holes in the door were all I could use to open it. Our food arrived, the Welsh cakes were delicious but I question them as Welsh cakes and more a cheese scone baked in an oven rather than on a hotplate. The Laverbread and Cockles were wonderful. The Shepherd's Pie however was terrible. It lacked juice, flavour, interest and was served in a shallow dish about 2 inches high - so it was mainly potato and hardly any meat and definitely no gravy. It had the look of something from a frozen food shop (sorry but it did). The vegetables were dry and overcooked and so boring. My husband left this sadly. We just felt underwhelmed and for the prices you pay, we expected more. I understand that you're using local Welsh ingredients, etc but it didn't come through as worth it. Would it be worth looking through some recipes from Bobby Freeman to put together some iconic, typical Welsh dishes using fantastic ingredients? It can't all be cheese on toast can it? I wish you all the success and hope that you can use this review to improve. Please get some simple Welsh phrases used by the staff, even asking for Dŵr or Diolch yn fawr iawn 😎🏴

This was not our waiter's fault, this is way beyond, this is a fundemental issue with managment. Our drinks took over 20 minutes to arrive, well after 8pm after a prompt arrival for our 7:30 booking. Dinner did not arrive until just before 9pm. After waiting an hour twenty minutes for our mains is when someone admitting to be the manager showed up wanting to apologise and... and... With my long awaited dinner getting cold while he was babbling on, frankly at that point I was more interested in eating than anything else. And then, after all that, it took 20 minutes from requesting our bill to having someone (not our waiter) show up with the credit card machine. From the number of apologies from our waiter, I have to feel for him. I honestly think he was stuck between a rock & a hard place by "procedure". He probably made a couple of mistakes, no doubt - it was a Wednesday night, a good time to train newbies. But this was beyond unacceptable on so many levels. The sad thing is, the cooks are doing a kick *ss job in the kitchen, all the food that we ordered, once it arrived, was absolutely fabulous, Welsh Rarebit (not rabbit), Leg of Lamb, Chicken Caeser Salad as well as Leek soup and our introduction to Welsh Cakes. When we scouted the place, my granddaughter & wife were giddy with the desert options -- but we left without even thinking about ordering desert there -- we wanted out as soon as we could after our mains arrived. I'm normally not one for bad reviews, there are many moving parts in a restaurant. But the degree in which this night was ruined has not happened to me in the better part of a decade, if not longer. Not only not recommending Welsh House, I would actively recommend against crossing their threshhold. We're visitng Cardiff for the first time, and everywhere else has been a delight, the #1 recommended restaurant that I found surely earned that spot (we just got back from there minutes ago -- I wanted to wait 24-hours before writing this as we return to London tomorrow).

Beautiful food, prices were perfect for what you get. Kudos to the kitchen staff too serving 18 of us without delay and every order was spot on! Delicious food, plenty of variety to eat and drink with a warm happy atmosphere from all. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Terrible. I am posting this in the hope that the restaurant improves not just to be critical. Five of us went for a family meal on Monday evening. Three of the group ordered Sheppard's Pie. After about 15 minutes we were told that they had run out of that so we had to order again. It was well over an hour before the food arrived. The staff did offer us a free drink due to the delay. When the food arrived my Wife had no vegetables or anything else with her meal. When we asked the waitress she said oh maybe we have run out. She did eventually arrive with some sliced carrots and peas. All the food was quite disappointing and none of us really enjoyed what we had. The waiter and waitress were both very polite and helpful. I think the blame is mainly the way the kitchen is run. I cannot really think of much positive but the building was quite nice inside. It was amusing to see that on the way out of the restaurant had apparently won an award in 2023. What has gone wrong?

Pleasant as soon as one walks through the door. Friendly & helpful staff. Food was delicious and well presented. We especially liked the sharer that included Welsh lamb cawl, breads, the popcorn cockles, the rarebit was tasty, desserts, so, we really enjoyed the authentic local, Welsh food.

Absolutely the worst restaurant I have EVER had the misfortune to visit. The front of staff are rushing around like busy fools. Far more concerned about the bar footfall than the restaurant. I ordered a bottle of wine, a pint and tap water, and the starter turned up was eaten and cleared away 30 minutes before the drinks arrived. Whilst we waited, I watched 3 couples arrive, wait to be served or order drinks, get fed up and leave. The bar in the restaurant was only used to service the front of house bar and not the restaurant, while a couple of tables got specialist service because they knew the staff. The inexperienced staff were genuinely apologetic, but definitely not the family experience I was looking forward to after sitting in traffic all day. Real shame because the starters were excellent.

Our first time in The Welsh House and it exceeded every expectation. The atmosphere was cozy and warm with great food and staff. We were treated well and also witnessed exceptional care given to some older and less able diners. Welsh people are all among the nicest on our planet. The Welsh food, our main reason for going, was hearty and satisfying. Honesty, cannot wait to go back.

Food was lovely but service was really poor. Waiting for drinks which came out at different times. Offered a promotion of Welsh cakes with our main meals that didn't arrive.

Lovely pub to sit outside and people watch. Very nice bartenders that work hard at making good cocktails. Reasonably priced for a city centre pub

I would say the service was the best, food was not really worthy the price at all. Small portion and expensive price.

Nice place to sit but too expensive. The food was ok. You have to order and pay inside.

You can taste local Welsh food. On a weekday evening, I was able to get in right away without waiting. The lamb burger and the potatoes that came as a side dish were very delicious. It was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The leg of Welsh lamb is so tender that it melts in your mouth. overall satisfied did.

Staff were preoccupied with a non urgent issue and delayed us entering the pub. After a five minute wait at the door, they just said you can sit anywhere.

Sorry, we had the most awful evening last night. Lack of staff meant we waited over 30 minutes for drink to the table. The main meals when they arrived were appalling pork belly cremated whilst the potato was still uncooked and the centre cold. Mains salad was a joke. Sat down at 7:30 food arrived at 8:45. The place was in chaos, bottles glasses all over the bar and kitchen staff without a clue Avoid at all costs

nice and chill pub. service was great. we ordered roasted pork belly (this was the best food we had there), mac and cheese with blue cheese (can really taste the blue cheese which is really nice!), chicken (a bit dry) but the sauce complements it well, and beef burger (patty was a tad dry as well). hence 3 stars for the food

Today was a birthday meal for my son. Our table was booked for 4pm, we arrived a little late but it wants busy loads of empty tables. We were great by a friendly girl who showed us to a table. She came back a few minutes later & took our order. 1, starter & 3 mains 1. Chicken Kiev 2. Steaks with peppercorn sauce x2. One steak meal was with truffle chips. When our order came only one sauce & NO truffle chips. My daughters meal the Kiev was only just warm & she said to me “ you’d never be able to eat this as it only lukewarm “ . The waitress came back & said the chef forgot the truffle & extra sauce. We are a family of foodies & always take photos of our food , I did on this occasion but not because it looked nice 😏 far from it . DEFINITELY NOT worth the money! Definitely won’t be back & definitely will not recommend.

I was there a few nights ago, with some of the students traveling with me. They are teenagers and yet, both they and I appreciated the food and the environment where we dined: good food and quick and kind service, and the affordable price. We had a good idea!

Unfortunately not the experience we were hoping for. Our starter came out after the main, my main was cold so I had to sent to back. The staff didn’t once ask if the food was okay or apologise for the issues. I wouldn’t recommend here which is a shame I had high hopes.

We were very well looked after. We ordered a Welsh experience with typical starters, a main course, which is a very good lamb soup with potatoes and carrots, plus a typical dessert.

Nice place with delicious food but I like the old one in Cardiff bay more due to the location. But it's worthwhile getting food in this restaurant.

The man serving the fondue on 6th November was very rude and stuck up. The fondue night is overrated and the service was slow.
