I recently visited the Welsh House for an afternoon tea, and it was a disappointing experience. Despite it not being busy and having booked in advance we waited 40 minutes for our food to arrive, and we were served tea 20 minutes before anything else. The sandwiches were dry with minimal filling, and the cheese and leek scones were turned upside down to hide the burnt sides. We expected rissoles as they were on the menu, but received cheese bites instead. The Welshcakes tasted pre-packaged, lacking any freshness. The only highlight was the brownie, which was nice. Overall, not worth the hype or the wait.

The food is very overpriced for the portion size, simplicity of the dishes and the quality. I have been on two occasions since they opened last year, and the front of house service has been incredibly poor each time. Over 20 min after been seated before anyone acknowledged us or offered us a drink. Both times staff were were just casually laying up tables, chatting amongst themselves and demonstrated little attention or care to the customers. On my second visit with my son, when we came to order, I asked if they could do smaller portions for children, only then did they say we do indeed have a children's menu, seems it just wasn't offered to us. We asked if it was okay with the kitchen could our toddler be served first and we'll have our starters and mains after, that i'd be able to feed him then enjoy my foot still hot. They assured us that it won't be any trouble at all, but then served his food with our starters and before any of us had finished proceeded to serve the main with such urgency it was simply placed on the table and they walked off before we could say much about it. Then meaning we had plates engulfing the table and was wrestling a toddler to stop him putting his hands into this buffet in front of us all. the food wasn't particularly hot anyway so safe to say by the time I ate my salmon it was stone cold, and definitely not worth £20. Very salty. It's a great shame as this venue has the potential to be amazing, the the quality of service and time management from the staff is a huge let down not to mention the delusions of grandeur on the food and its prices. They also have the cheek to add service charge as standard, which many people were requesting to be removed! Receipt image is for 2 adults and 15 month yod.

We came in for Sunday dinner and all the food was brilliant. However, we had to find our own drinks menu, were sat at the table a good 20 minutes before anyone came to take our Order. It was not until after we had ordered the sharing roast that our server came back and enquired if we had been told that the kitchen was out of beef (we hadn’t been). While I was waiting for the meal, I had a good view of the service window and one server who kept scratching their hair in a manner which implied they had lice and another who kept rubbing their nose and then handling plates. Add to this someone who seem to think it was a good idea to treat the lights over the service hatch like a tether ball batting them back-and-forth between themselves and whoever is on the other side (I wonder how clean those lights are), another server who seemed to be on the phone constantly and the fact that we had to disappoint our young son and not get dessert because it was half an hour after we finished eating when our server came round to ask how we were doing much less ask if we wanted the desert menu and when we asked to pay and leave they had to doublecheck if we have been give a bill. From the looks of these reviews our experience doesn’t appear to have been typical, but it was certainly deeply disappointing. The courtesy removal of the service charge we were offered was appreciated but should not have been necessary.

We visited for dinner last night and were a bit disappointed. They’d just started a new menu, which was frustrating as we’d chosen the restaurant because my mum had already picked something from the old menu. The new options were limited, and the food wasn’t great. The Caesar salad was okay but just a whole lettuce, not chopped. The chips were overly oily, and the pork chop had no seasoning and tasted burnt. My mum had the lamb chop and wasn’t impressed either. While I appreciate their use of local suppliers, the menu change let them down this time, and for the quality, it was quite expensive. It seems like a place that has potential but fell short due to the recent menu changes and quality of the dishes.

Made a reservation here for the Saturday I was here in Cardiff with my bf. Before going I was a bit sceptical, as some of the reviews I had seen on TikTok didn’t say it was very good. My bf also didn’t really want to go, but the other options that we wanted to go to were fully booked out. Despite what I had seen online, I thought my meal tasted delicious and my beef had been cooked perfectly. I got the Welsh Beef rump steak served with chunky chips sprinkled with Halen Môn Sea Salt and a side of Caesar salad. I thought the beef had been cooked perfectly. My bf got the Leg of Welsh Lamb served with crushed new potatoes, honey-glazed carrots and minted gravy. He really enjoyed his meal, although he didn’t want to admit it to me at first. Probably as he was quite adamant that the food wasn’t going to taste nice. I also got the Grazed gooey chocolate brownie with Mario's plant-based vanilla ice cream to share between us two which we both really liked. The only problem I had here was that the waiter taking out order, wasn’t really giving me time to speak, which was a bit annoying. Other than that, I would definitely recommend this place for anyone that is wanting to try Welsh food.

We were sat for 20 minutes with out being asked what we would like to drink, we were asked for our food order first. The staff were more interested in chatting amongst themselves, than the customers. I had a bad experience at the restaurant across the street due to which I chose this place to try authentic Welsh cuisine and it's the best decision I made. The staff were friendly, hospitable and checked if we needed anything. I initially wanted to try lamb cawl but they only serve it in lunch, so a heads up on it. I had shepherd's pie with steamed vegetables which was amazing. The crushed new potatoes were good but lacked seasoning. The welsh rarebit had a great presentation and was way better than any grilled cheese sandwich I ever had. My server was nice enough to arrange a welsh cake without any alcohol content. Definitely would recommend this place.

We came for Sunday lunch- my sister and I shared the Roast platter- portion size was good for the price! Food was nice- a standard Sunday roast however £5 for a small portion of cauliflower cheese was quite disappointing. We were served by various staff and they were all excellent very friendly and couldn’t do enough for us! Unfortunately we were sat right by the kitchen window- pretty much the whole time we were there the Chef was shouting service very passive aggressively. It was excessive how often and loud he was shouting- this ruined the atmosphere for us. We felt uncomfortable and sorry for the staff running around trying to do other things whilst the chef is screaming service multiple times a minute.

Visited with friends after the Cardif half marathon, very much looking forward to food here recommended by many, sad to say our visit was not up to standard. The booth we was seated at had an horrendous smell of sewage seeping from behind the bench along with the sound of constant running water and people using the bathroom, we informed the lovely table staff that we wasn’t impressed with the situation to be basically ignored by the impossibly to miss, management. When a conversation finally happened with said manager we was given a bull crap story of why it is what it is. He was very much avoiding the subject deflecting the problem to another business when it was clearly the buildings problem. No compensation offered as an apology for the absolute disgusting stench, hence why I’m writing this review. I’m a very popular business man in Cardiff and I’ll be telling every single client about my experience. Thank you for a terrible experience. Won’t be returning.

Really disappointed with this place, hadn't been here before so thought we'd give it a go. As this place is called "The Welsh House" and all geared around being Welsh it was very disappointing to see that the menus were not bilingual. When questioned why are there no translations etc we were told "well no one would understand it as no one speaks Welsh " WTAF ..he said the only people who come in here are tourists and as they wouldn't understand what's the point. As I counted to 10 I simply pointed out that 1. Im a Welsh speaker and currently sat in your establishment 2. it would make the customers / tourists see that we in Wales have our own language and to simply embrace it and not be dismissive of it especially when you are promoting the brand of being "The Welsh House" we asked the individual where he was from and when he said England it summed it all up really, totally dismissive of the Welsh language. I won't be dining here again it's fair to say !!! Food is average, there are better places on St.Marys street.

We dined at The Welsh House in Cardiff for an evening meal, and the experience was delightful. The restaurant serves authentic Welsh cuisine, and the atmosphere is cosy, perfect for a relaxed meal. For starters, we had a variety of dishes: the potato leek soup, which came with a small loaf and a hearty slab of Welsh cheese, was deliciously comforting. The warm cockles with bacon on sourdough bread were incredibly tasty, adding a wonderful salty richness. The potted pig with toasted bread tasted like high-quality ham—flavorful and satisfying. Moving on to the mains, we enjoyed the pork belly with roast potatoes, where the pork was succulent and cooked to perfection. The Welsh leg of lamb with potatoes and vegetables, served in a savoury gravy, was equally flavorful and tender. We also tried the shepherd's pie, topped with crispy mashed potatoes and served with seasonal vegetables (peas, broad beans, and cabbage). The shepherd's pie had a nice texture, though I found it slightly too salty for my preference. For dessert, we indulged in a chocolate brownie, which was perfectly gooey on the inside and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a fresh strawberry. A sweet, satisfying way to end the meal. The service was excellent, with attentive and friendly staff. Overall, The Welsh House is a wonderful restaurant, and I highly recommend it for those looking to experience traditional Welsh flavours.

I had been wanting to go here for ages after following on Instagram and wanting to try some really good Welsh food and experience some.great Welshness. Overall, we were left disappointed. This is no way a scathing review as I totally support what you guys are doing for Wales and promoting Welsh culture. From the moment we arrived the restaurant felt a bit like a pub and seemed to have a grubby feel to it. The front had parasols promoting Italian beer rather than a Welsh version. We were greeted by some lovely staff but none of them gave us a "S'mae" or "Prynhawn da". It would have been so nice to have some phrases spoken. We were seated and ordered drinks and looked through the menu. I really wanted to try as much interesting food as possible but the taster menu was just too much to spend on something that we didn't know what it would be. I ordered the Cheese Welsh Cakes and the Laverbread and Cockles and my husband ordered the Shepherd's Pie. I went to the toilet whilst we waited and was a bit shocked at how dirty they were. The toilets are downstairs which is an experience in itself to get to, but the toilets were really bad. The floor was wet, the cubicle had a rusty toilet roll holder on the floor, full of toilet rolls covered in urine where people had missed. I washed my hands (bottle of Carex empty) and went to leave but couldn't get out of the room because there was no door handle. A couple of holes in the door were all I could use to open it. Our food arrived, the Welsh cakes were delicious but I question them as Welsh cakes and more a cheese scone baked in an oven rather than on a hotplate. The Laverbread and Cockles were wonderful. The Shepherd's Pie however was terrible. It lacked juice, flavour, interest and was served in a shallow dish about 2 inches high - so it was mainly potato and hardly any meat and definitely no gravy. It had the look of something from a frozen food shop (sorry but it did). The vegetables were dry and overcooked and so boring. My husband left this sadly. We just felt underwhelmed and for the prices you pay, we expected more. I understand that you're using local Welsh ingredients, etc but it didn't come through as worth it. Would it be worth looking through some recipes from Bobby Freeman to put together some iconic, typical Welsh dishes using fantastic ingredients? It can't all be cheese on toast can it? I wish you all the success and hope that you can use this review to improve. Please get some simple Welsh phrases used by the staff, even asking for Dŵr or Diolch yn fawr iawn 😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Had dinner, er, tried to have dinner, @Welsh Housee last night. We're in restaurants 70-100 times per year. We travel a bit. Professionally, I was the "road warrior". I appreciate good service and can understand when someone's having an off day. But this was the dinner from Hades. This was not our waiter's fault, this is way beyond, this is a fundemental issue with managment. Our drinks took over 20 minutes to arrive, well after 8pm after a prompt arrival for our 7:30 booking. Dinner did not arrive until just before 9pm. After waiting an hour twenty minutes for our mains is when someone admitting to be the manager showed up wanting to apologise and... and... With my long awaited dinner getting cold while he was babbling on, frankly at that point I was more interested in eating than anything else. And then, after all that, it took 20 minutes from requesting our bill to having someone (not our waiter) show up with the credit card machine. From the number of apologies from our waiter, I have to feel for him. I honestly think he was stuck between a rock & a hard place by "procedure". He probably made a couple of mistakes, no doubt - it was a Wednesday night, a good time to train newbies. But this was beyond unacceptable on so many levels. The sad thing is, the cooks are doing a kick *ss job in the kitchen, all the food that we ordered, once it arrived, was absolutely fabulous, Welsh Rarebit (not rabbit), Leg of Lamb, Chicken Caeser Salad as well as Leek soup and our introduction to Welsh Cakes. When we scouted the place, my granddaughter & wife were giddy with the desert options -- but we left without even thinking about ordering desert there -- we wanted out as soon as we could after our mains arrived. I'm normally not one for bad reviews, there are many moving parts in a restaurant. But the degree in which this night was ruined has not happened to me in the better part of a decade, if not longer. Not only not recommending Welsh House, I would actively recommend against crossing their threshhold. We're visitng Cardiff for the first time, and everywhere else has been a delight, the #1 recommended restaurant that I found surely earned that spot (we just got back from there minutes ago -- I wanted to wait 24-hours before writing this as we return to London tomorrow).

Terrible. I am posting this in the hope that the restaurant improves not just to be critical. Five of us went for a family meal on Monday evening. Three of the group ordered Sheppard's Pie. After about 15 minutes we were told that they had run out of that so we had to order again. It was well over an hour before the food arrived. The staff did offer us a free drink due to the delay. When the food arrived my Wife had no vegetables or anything else with her meal. When we asked the waitress she said oh maybe we have run out. She did eventually arrive with some sliced carrots and peas. All the food was quite disappointing and none of us really enjoyed what we had. The waiter and waitress were both very polite and helpful. I think the blame is mainly the way the kitchen is run. I cannot really think of much positive but the building was quite nice inside. It was amusing to see that on the way out of the restaurant had apparently won an award in 2023. What has gone wrong?

Absolutely the worst restaurant I have EVER had the misfortune to visit. The front of staff are rushing around like busy fools. Far more concerned about the bar footfall than the restaurant. I ordered a bottle of wine, a pint and tap water, and the starter turned up was eaten and cleared away 30 minutes before the drinks arrived. Whilst we waited, I watched 3 couples arrive, wait to be served or order drinks, get fed up and leave. The bar in the restaurant was only used to service the front of house bar and not the restaurant, while a couple of tables got specialist service because they knew the staff. The inexperienced staff were genuinely apologetic, but definitely not the family experience I was looking forward to after sitting in traffic all day. Real shame because the starters were excellent.

We had lunch here and food was great. Service was a little slow, but nothing to worry about. Luckily the pub wasn't that full so ambient was nice and tranquil.

Great food and service. Can warmly recommend. We had a shared meal with lots of Welsh specialties which was just what we wanted. Everything tasted freshly cooked with care for detail.

The lamb cawl was tasty, the cocktail so-so, but the overall experience was great. The decor, the hospitality, everything was pleasant and I'd happily go back next time I'm in Cardiff.

Unfortunately not the experience we were hoping for. Our starter came out after the main, my main was cold so I had to sent to back. The staff didn’t once ask if the food was okay or apologise for the issues. I wouldn’t recommend here which is a shame I had high hopes.

We were very well looked after. We ordered a Welsh experience with typical starters, a main course, which is a very good lamb soup with potatoes and carrots, plus a typical dessert.

I am on vacation in Wales and wanted to try some local food; this place was recommended to me by my tour guide and it did not disappoint. We ordered the Welsh tasting menu for two, as well as some local whiskey and crème liqueur. Everything was exceptional and the server was very friendly. Highly recommend if you want to try some delicious Welsh food!

Food is lovely, very tasty, all welsh produce. Unfortunately, the day we visited the service was slow. The waiter on the floor was very overworked while the 2 bar men stood around chatting and doing nothing. There were several tables looking around for service, but the 2 behind the bar seemed oblivious to what needed doing. I had to get up and ask to order food, and our drinks sat on the bar for 5 minutes before I eventually got up to fetch them myself. The bar man (who was doing nothing for the majority of the 5 minutes) watched me and looked astounded. I hope this was a one-off bad day because the food is delicious, and the concept is great.

Went here on the day on the P!NK show, we booked the day before and were very lucky to get a space. The service was great, very quick and reliable, the food was amazing could have been hotter according to some of the table, but was perfect for me. The lighting wasn't ideal as it is on the darker side. Can't stress enough how lovely the food was, they catered to my coeliac/gluten free boyfriend so well, he had a separate menu which was really transparent and make him feel comfortable. The place was busy due to the day but there were no long waits or lack of food service, it was bloody fantastic and we can't wait to go back.

This is copied from my Trip Advisor review word for word as I don't want to go through the whole thing again. "Well, I was really looking forward to taking my friend here for afternoon tea on her birthday! The website talks about quality and there's an 'award winning' sign in the entrance so it was looking good. Until we went through the door. The smell of rotten sewage hit us immediately and when a staff member came over we both said 'what's that awful smell?'. His reply was just a shocked look as if he was unaware of it, despite how rancid and overpowering it was! We sat down hoping it would subside and we'd get used to it once we'd been there a while as I'd prepaid for the afternoon tea so we felt obliged to stay. It got worse.. When the food arrived it was quite sad looking sandwiches and a few other things. The first thing I noticed in the cheap, sliced bread was lots of deep fingerprint indentations left by whoever made them, we actually took photos of them. My friend them found some sort of hair or bristle in her coffee, we took a pic of that too! The sandwiches themselves were very sparsely filled, very little filling and what was there was low quality. The 'ham and garden salad' one had very little ham in them, pics also of them. The cheese and onion ones were nice though so we found something positive! The Welshcakes and bara brith were really dry and unappealing, we banged them on the slate plates and it made a hollow sound, we took video of that! Only one brownie and one slice of bara brith between us, unfortunately I actually liked the brownie so told my friend to try it at which point I she pointed out there was only one and I'd just eaten it! I was mortified! I went between being tearfully embarrassed and sorry for bringing my friend here on her birthday to her trying to make me feel better by laughing at the ridiculousness of how bad it was! If I hadn't already paid I would have felt very aggrieved at having to hand over anything but luckily for them I am neurodiverse and couldn't cope with the confrontation so we said nothing and left early. Really so disappointed and now quite annoyed having just seen another review from last month that said pretty much the same thing and the reply had said the horrible smell had been fixed. Well it's the middle of June so that's not true is it, it still smells like a sewer when you walk in, really unprofessional and off-putting.

My friend and I recently visited for a Welsh Afternoon Tea as a birthday treat for myself and we were both very dissatisfied. We were met with a stench of what can only be described as that not dissimilar to sewage. The member of staff collecting us couldn't seem to smell it. Then led to a stain ridden and appeared unwiped table or maybe it was and it was cleaned in haste. There was a small hair/bristle/fibre in my flat white. Then came the food. The top tier of savoury welsh cake (which was a bit over baked) tasty and hard rissole. The sandwiches had thumbprints in. My friend asked for an exchange for tuna sandwiches and there didn't appear to be one. The ham salad was more fat and gone over salad that looked from a packet. The welsh cakes were solid and would have been better used as a coaster and only barely any fruit in them. Next to the bara brith which was as hard as the welsh cakes. The brownie was enjoyed by my friend and we both thought the scone was nice. Overall, dissatisfaction and disappointed as this was a birthday treat and not wanting to have any more upset on my friend who was mortified at the quality or lack of, along with the poor hygiene and cleanliness, we made our exit. Not recommended and a shame if visitors to the city have the Welsh Afternoon Tea.

We ordered a Welsh set for two. The food was quite heavy in general - the starter was a board of cheese and deep-fried stuff, the main were two bowls of soup, and the dessert was a board of very sweet cookies with cream. The food was interesting but not for everyone I assumed - the soups were very good, packed with flavours. The starters and the desserts were really heavy and dense though. The alcohol was just fine - not a must to try. However, we also found the staff a bit rude to us when we asked for more details on the wine selection.

Had a Sunday dinner it was quietish about 12:30 sat me quickly, slow to take my order the barman is extremely slow no urgency, my food came before my drink. The food looked lovely and a good portion, but overall bland the beef was dry and the gravey needed alot more flavour. A pint and a roast diner was £27.45 I didn't think that was good value for money but I don't know the area. Good location tho.

Only go there if you have A LOT of time and patience. Having had to 'pre- book' our food becausecwe were s group of about 12, it tool 15 minutes before we could even order drinks, more than 30 minutes to starters. Having bookey the table for 18.30 main course arrived at about 20.30. The food was nice but not worth the wait.

The food that we actually were served as part of the set menu at the Welsh House was itself good, but the rest of the experience was not. Despite the restaurant not being very busy, the service was quite slow from the start, and only got worse. Our set menu had an appetizer, main dish, and dessert. After ordering, we waited about 25 minutes for the app, which was a nice selection of locally sourced bites, but then even after we were completely done with it, waited over 30 minutes for the next course. Meanwhile, the music was playing at far too loud a volume for the number of people inside/ambient noise level. The main course itself was decent, a hearty soup, and then…we were completely forgotten about. Despite trying to get any servers attention multiple times (and at several points we saw 3-4 standing talking by the bar), no one came by our table. Eventually my wife got up and asked the staff about our dessert, and we were promised it would be out shortly. After 10 more minutes, we’d had enough, and asked for the bill. For our ‘inconvenience,’ we recorded £7 off the bill, which was basically the VAT. All in all, a 3 course lunch that we only had 2 courses of took more than an hour and fifteen minutes. If you have the time and patience, the food is good, but the service is lacking.

We came for Sunday lunch and were surprised at how good not only the quality of food was but also how lovely the members of staff were! Nothing was too much for them as they brought us extra helpings of gravy and mint sauce! The lunch was fantastic, the drinks were flowing and we felt we could have a laugh and a joke with our waiters. I highly recommend The Welsh House and hope to visit during the week to sample their main menu. Thank you once again, we had a wonderful time!x

The atmosphere was nice, the food was good-looking and good-tasting. However, the main problem with this place is the waiting time for the table. They will make you wait 30 minutes for a table even if some tables are empty. In fact, after we ate, most of the tables were still empty.

It was our first night in Cardiff and we wanted to try some Welsh food. The lady at the entrance told us they have a traditional lamb stew and the welsh dessert was on the house. The service was terrible, one waiter took our order and never came back. We hardly got our drinks, the food came and it was not good. When we asked for the Welsh dessert, the same lady who told us about it said she had to check if the kitchen was still open (it was 9 pm) and she never came back to tell us anything. We asked another waiter who was kind enough to bring it. Overall not a good experience, bad hostess who deceives guests to lure them in, bad service and mediocre food.

Great atmosphere and great wine selection, fondue itself was lovely but let down by the bread. We'll definitely be going again, but a baked French bread or something a little nicer than what appears to be chopped up Hovis would make this 5*
