We were also briefly concerned about some bad reviews. But. Super friendly service who gave us great advice. The food was excellent (finally something cooked again). We had the shepperds pie and the leg of lamb. Not cheap but inexpensive 👍🏼

The atmosphere in this restaurant is awful, the staff are slow and inattentive. We ordered food and it took over 30 minutes for drinks and olives to arrive. The olives were horrible and had clearly just been picked out of a jar. We ended up leaving before our mains arrived because it took such a long time.

Mind blown how this place has been rated so high for a Sunday lunch! It was hands down one of the worst I have ever had.. Gravy like water, small undercooked roasties, beef overcooked, flat yorkshires, burnt stuffing ball, veg choice boring. Brownie was nicest thing I had however it was tiny. The staff although lovely and polite when we called them over overall the service was very bad and not attentive in the slightest. No Salt & pepper on table, no offer of sauces, no one asked if happy with food, had to keep asking for more drinks, desserts and for the bill. It was not busy at all and had four different waiters, very in-organised. Will never come back here, extremely disappointed!

The Welsh House is located in the heart of Cardiff on St. Mary Street, not far from Cardiff Castle. The ambience is warm and cozy and invites you to linger. The restaurant focuses on Welsh cuisine, drinks and products in all respects. We stopped in on a Saturday evening for dessert and drinks. It wasn't crowded and we were seated quickly. Unfortunately we had to wait a long time and ask for our order to be taken, even though there wasn't much going on. Our Welsh cakes with salted caramel and ice cream also came first and our drinks (from the bottle) only came after we had already finished - and then only when asked. When we got our bill there were things on it that we didn't have. It's a shame that the poor service drags down the overall impression so much.

My wife took me there for a birthday present last night,I didn't enjoy it, simple as that, over priced steak which had more fat than meat at £24 simply a rip off just because it's Welsh, this upset my wife at the table, which almost brought her to tears, this made me really angry wanting to complain (I wasn't going to pay the bill at all) but my wife didn't want to cause a seen, in all unpleasant experience absolutely won't go back.

Lovely food, a lot of it local. A good selection of food choice and drinks. Well worth a visit.

Had the sharing roast here at the weekend and it was great food! Only had an issue with our order and other tables ended up with our food so had to wait quite a long time. But management was really lovely and apologetic. Once we got our food it was lovely. Highly recommend for the roast.

Went for Sunday lunch - had the sharer and it was more than enough between two of us. Really lovely lunch - would have liked it a little hotter - but otherwise was spot on! Service was really quick - the staff were great and the music was so cool! Defo going back again!

Went for mothers day afternoon tea. Which was booked well in advance The restaurant was over booked our table was not ready. After much effort by the waiting staff, a table was sorted. 30 minutes late we eventually enjoyed the afternoon tea. The staff were amazing, the food excellent the planning and organisation left a lot to be desired. Will not be returning.

When eventually greeted for our booking after about 7 minutes, was offered the table next to where was standing which was ectremeky cramped and not cleaned etc.. Went there to sit down very disappointingly, told staff member we had booked well in advance to Sit in the restaurant bit at the back... didn't take any interest for a while. Eventually was told... someone's left you can have theirs! Sunday roast food was cold coming out, not impressed at all by the plate. Service absolutely awful by the time it took to see someone and they acknowledge you,the food was even more stone cold. No draught beer working had to get a bottle. Of beer.. not the same. In normal circumstances I'd let this pass but with everything service wise it may have been a lack of effort overall. Staff didn't even look happy. So utterly disappointed having had our eyes on here for so very long! Welsh house doesn't reflect a Welsh house ... put a smile on your face!

Food was very nice. Perfect for what we were looking for. Took nearly 2 hours for a 3 course lunch - ideally could've been a little faster.

They made us wait outside for more than 40 minutes and never call us, so we had to enter again and ask, only to hear that there was no table for us until 4 pm (1 hour and a half later). We insisted so they took us to a table in the back, where there were a lot of empty tables... The food was ok, but the service was pretty bad, wouldn't recommend it.

Went for lunch. Service very slow. Had to wait a good half an hour before our drinks arrived. No water offered on arrival had to ask. Would have liked some side plates.

I visited on a weekday around 5:30pm and it was busy so I do recommend booking in advance. I really like the concept even the drinks use Welsh spirits or ingredients. The food was great but unfortunately the service was a little off in terms of time taken to order and receive drinks and our appetiser was not brought out until after our main arrived. I am glad I visited and I did enjoy it just think the service could be improved.

2 out 3 had chips and both reported weirdly that some chips were undercooked n actually still frozen. Asked some standard questions on alcohol options, no clue. Asked to pay abill, no pleasantries, no asking if everything was okay. My old man fancied some decent pub grub on day of his retirement n got absolute pile of S. Cheers.

AVOID THIS PLACE. A horrible experience that ruined our last night in Cardiff. I made reservations for 8:30. We were seated and were told by our male waiter the main chef that could cook steak was going home, and so they couldn’t be ordered. There were other mains, which were appealing so that was fine. We placed an order for a wine, beer, and 3 appetizers. Promptly enough, 2 appetizers and 2 glasses of wine were brought by a female waitress. Our 3rd appetizer never arrived. No one ever came to our table again, not to take our main course order., clear the plates ask if we wanted anything. We never saw our male waiter again. After an after an hour of watching a couple waitresses walk by and tables clear out, we waved for the bill. The restaurant was not busy. We asked the waitress what happened to our waiter, and she said “it was his home time”. We found it strange He didn’t pass off his table to anyone, or if he did, no one covered it. At this point in the night, it was impossible to find traditional Welsh food in Cardiff, and the evening was ruined. We reviewed the reviews in detail and see this is a situation that’s common here. In speaking with locals they said they’d never recommend it or go there as the management is awful.

Tried the 3 course Taste of Wales which we had voucher for, normally would cost £50, but voucher was £35. Starters very disappointing, one of which was cockles which were very small, the 1/2 slice of welsh rarebit lacked cheese and luke warn, for mains, the soup and cawl very small portions, desserts were good. Overall not good value even at the discounted price and quality/portion size was poor, would not recommend or revisit, on a plus service was very good.

This place is ideal to get your first Welsh meal in town. They serve nice lamb-based dishes and offer a good selection of draft ciders. We vusited the reastaurant on a Friday night, and were very glad to have a reservation. Maybe portions could be a little more generous.

Enjoyed traditional Welsh food in a pub like setting. Great cocktails. Would return to try more Welsh food options. Great selection of Welsh made liquor, beer, and wine.

I’m not one to write reviews but felt like I had to following my visit here. I was so looking forward to trying this place after seeing recommendations online. Sadly it did not live up to the hype. Whilst I loved the ‘Welshness’ in the decor, the service was truly awful. The staff were completely flustered from the moment I walked in. Everything seemed like an impossible task to them, even seating people. It became evident immediately that a lot of other customers felt the same. We were sat at the front which appeared totally neglected. I was seated next to the area where all the used plates were stacked waiting to be cleaned. The windows were covered in condensation (which would explain the smell of damp others have mentioned). The table next to us was left uncleaned right up until we left. All customers in this area at the same time as me refused the service charge on the bill due to a complete lack of engagement and interest from the staff. I don’t think I’d hurry back. A shame really as I did feel it had a lot of potential. I can only hope my experience was a one off.

Was hoping for a lovely meal here but walked in and the music was so loud it instantly gave me a headache, was more like a nightclub then a restaurant, truly awful experience

This was fantastic! The food was amazing, especially the puddings, Mac and Cheese and Welsh rarebit pieces! Meanwhile, the service was okay; not the best but not the worst. The service was slow but there was one server which was amazing and really funny. Also, at the start, the server was really unsure where we sat, didn’t even smile and put us in the most awkward spot. But we would definitely come back here again, it was fantastic!

We ordered the Wales Meal for two. It was so good with great Walsh cakes, soup, lamb and desserts. Also, the waiter introduced the menu carefully with a warm smile. The only thing is if you are in a hurry to train, it may nit be an ideal option😂 It is a perfect restaurant to take time and enjoy!

This terrific restaurant is well placed along with a host of competition in the Old Town in the centre of Cardiff. Staff were very friendly and easy going. Food was outstanding and three courses with drinks was very reasonably priced. Absolutely worth visiting.

The Welsh sampler for two gave us a generous-and tasty- selection of regional dishes. Everything was excellently prepared and the service was enthusiastic.

Lovely food. Chefs clearly work really hard. This place was let down sadly by service. Forgotten about after ordering drinks so went up to the bar to order again. Had to ask for the bill three times, after all that service tip gets added onto bill automatically. Just wish service was better. Food was great.

I am very disappointed by the food and the ambience after looking forward to this for a special birthday with friends sadly. I had the cockle start and Linguine special on the day and I have to say we ate on the way home boring to look at medioca taste. Sorry, we will not be back

My family and I had breakfast at The Welsh House…. Eggs Benedict . So very tasty! Our waitress, Jasmine, was a star. We will definitely return.

Food and service were delicious and very good , I had the fish and chips and a lager, and my husband had pork belly with mash potatoes and a Guinness. The reason for the 4 stars verses 5 is that they do not take defense discount . Would for sure visit again .

Food was nice, servers were lovely but really slow at the end of the meal, half an hour for a dessert menu after asking multiple times and a 20 minute wait for a coffee and a glass of coke.

Came here for my birthday today and left feeling a little bit let down. We felt very rushed, the mains were brought out as my partner was still eating his starter which meant he didn’t finish it. The beef was all gone so we opted for the pork instead. We were then charged for the beef which was more expensive. I disputed this as we both ate the pork and still got charged for one pork and one beef. At this point I didn’t want to argue over £2. Be aware that a 10% service charge is added on the bill as well. Normally I’d have no issues with this but it definitely wasn’t justified in this situation, especially as the food itself was subpar to taste but on the more expensive side. We were in and out within 30 minutes which was disappointing for a birthday meal.

We had dinner here for the first time, and I was really looking forward to it as the menu looked really tasty. We were shown to our table, which was at the back of the restaurant. We sat down and noticed the table was covered in salt. We asked one of the waitresses if she could give it a clean, which she did immediately. I just would’ve expected the table to be clean before we were seated. I have to say the food was lovely - piping hot, good portion sizes and very tasty. However service was very slow and I had to cancel my coffee order because we were off to a show and had to leave. The waitresses were very friendly and helpful, however it felt like the place was short staffed. They took the service charge off our bill as a gesture of goodwill which was appreciated, however we added it back on as a tip because we felt although service was slow, it wasn’t the waiting staff’s fault. My over riding impression of the restaurant was that it isn’t quite sure what it wants to be. The front area looked like a cosy bistro but the back (where we were sat) had higher ceilings and felt empty with a less cosy atmosphere. They had the rugby on big screens so it was noisy and had the atmosphere of a sports bar. We have nothing against sports bars (we’d been in one watching the Ireland v Wales match earlier), it’s just not what we were looking for or expecting for dinner. There were fairy lights around what looked like a mezzanine at the back, but they just looked out of place and not in keeping. In summary the food was lovely but I think they need to work on the decor/environment. Is it a sports bar or a cosy bistro? I expected it was going to be the latter, but it felt like the former.

Situated at the Castle end of the High Street, this is a smallish restaurant that seeves locally sourced quality Welsh food with a twist, laverbread mayonaise being one. A very good selection of Welsh produce, including succulent steaks, lamb and a good range of local beers. Staff knowlegable and helpful.

Had breakfast on Sunday morning. We were one of three tables, the coffee order for four people took 15 minutes to arrive and was wrong. The food arrived tepid, the fried eggs undercooked as the white was still runny around the yolk. The sausages look liked they been reheated and put on the chargrill for effect. The bacon was dry and chargrilled as was the toast. A long wait for butter and sauces to arrive topped off a bad experience. The chef constantly shouting through the kitchen into the restaurant was poor, we didn't want to hear him. And to have a service charge added was a nice touch of ignorance to what was going on. Anyway, can't recommend.

This was our 3rd time visiting The Welsh House and we WILL be back for a 4th! This afternoon (15th Feb)we enjoyed a lovely Afternoon Tea which was great value for money and we couldn't fault the lovely waitress Jaz who couldn't have been more lovely and helpful. A lovely setting whether it be for lunch, drinks or Afternoon Tea and I can definitely recommend.

Fabulous service for our 3 course Taste of Wales lunch. Friendly and attentive service from Jasmine and Sion and they lady who welcomed us at the door. The food was delicious well cooked and well presented. Cockle popcorn, lamb cawl, bara brith, light as a feather sweet Welsh cake as well as savoury ones to name just a part of it. I couldn't fault any of it and would definately recommend.

We went to The Welsh House for our pre-match lunch, we were looked after extremely well. Bearing in mind it was an International day, we were not rushed at all. The food was simple fare but delicious. They welcomed us back after the game and found us a table again, although we hadn’t booked. We were also entertained right royally by Tom Jones (or may have been a double). Thank you to all the staff at The Welsh House, you made a great day even more memorable.

Our server Angela was great, attentive and thoughtful. It was a birthday celebration for my daughter.. our food was delicious and well presented . The atmosphere was relaxed although it was a little dark in the back room. Lots of refurb going on upstairs so maybe the downstairs will have a little makeover at some point. There is a 10% service charge on top which does push the price up, but on the whole it was a very pleasant experience. We will be back x

It was an international day! Our reservation was 11.45. We were a bit late, so I rang ahead, and in all fairness, they kept our table. Plastic glasses (due to Welsh Government law)but the ones we had that hardly have any structural strength, so we had to ask for it to be doubled up. The food was ok, vegan burger x 2 and chips, 1 x mac n cheese, and I had a cheese and leek rissole, which was rock hard, unfortunately. Also, we sat at the back, and the place smelt of damp. Went down to the basement to the toilets and smelt worse there They need to get some airfreshers or room fragrance in the whole place. The music is coming out of the speakers was too loud and tinny, but great welsh artists! I'm supposed to be coming back on March 1st here with friends for dinner! Fingers crossed for a better experience.

Absolutely gutted to leave such a poor review as the food was lovely, but the service was abysmal. I was so excited to try an authentic, Welsh restaurant and I'm so disappointed that I am unsure I'd return and I wouldn't recommend. Table for 2 at 7pm booked. We were put at the front by the window, which was freezing. There was a heater that was broken nearby so they know it's cold there, but nothing was able to be done to warm it up. Our drinks and orders were taken quickly and our food came out in an appropriate time. The waitress said they had a table of 16, so she managed to put our order in before there's. "Great!" I thought. Food was absolutely delicious. My cawl was a bit on the cool side, and given we were sat in the cold part of the restaurant, it got cold quickly, but the taste was beautiful. Once we'd finished our food, we waited 35 minutes before anyone came to our table, and that was after waiters walked past several times whilst we indicated to them. When a waiter eventually came over, we said we'd been waiting for so long for our plates to be cleared that we didn't want to stay for dessert (even though we'd ordered from the 2 course offer menu) and to just get us the bill. He apologised and brought the bill, which had an automatic 10% service charge. I asked for it to be taken off, which it was, we paid and left, all whilst our dirty plates were STILL on the table. They turned away at least 15 groups whilst we were there. Such a disappointment

It was such a delightful meal. The meat trio for two was so good, meat done perfectly and the gravy was fantastic. And the sticky toffee pudding was amazing! Service was also so nice. Next time I'm in Cardiff I will sure go there again

We had our meal here last night, the main courses were lovely - however 5 pounds for 4 extremely small cubes of bread and another 2 pounds for oils, was a bit disappointing. There was some confusion regarding our booking as I had email confirmation, but it was not on the system at the restaurant. We were then seated, in the front of the restaurant which I have to say was so cold I put my coat back on, as did many others sat near us - some little heaters by this space may go down well. I’m not sure if it was due to where we placed, but it took over 30 minutes for our empty starters to be collected as servers kept walking past - unfortunately this made us feel quite neglected. My partner then had to ask for the bill 4 times as it kept being forgotten. I can tell this place could be really lovely, as our mains were great but the service does require some improvement.

Not exactly what I was expecting. Service very slow and chips were better than the steak (weird addition of bbq sauce on top of the steak). There are 4 soft drinks on the drinks menu, two of them being water. It is only when we actually went up to the bar we found they did actually have coke etc. If you're not a drinker just go to the bar. We were asked if we wanted gravy with the shepherd's pie, i thought this was a standard thing. Waitress was lovely but didnt see much of her. It was ok for the price, probably wont come back.

The food wasn’t too bad, we got the sharer roast. It was nice but a lot about the service made it average e.g. had to ask for bottomless gravy even though the food we ordered should’ve auto come with it. We weren’t auto provided with condiments e.g. salt, pepper or sauces then went with the meats. We didn’t receive one of our drinks until we’d finished our meal (it was a coke, so nothing hard to make.) I did like that they brought over a jug of water and glasses though.

Genuinely had the best steak ever! Food was beautiful and service was very good. Me and my partner had been wondering Cardiff for some food and rejected entry for no reservations. Had we been accepted we would never had found this little gem. Absolutely lovely, looking forward to going back.

Loved our visit to the Welsh House yesterday! Very traditional Sunday lunch, just like our gran made! It had sparkly trees, great Christmas twinkling lights and decorated tree. Staff were friendly and looked after us well!! Can’t wait to come back!

With out doubt one of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve ever had. For a place that is supposed to be providing a genuine Welsh experience, it couldn’t have been further from that. Two beers on tap - just a Guinness and a Birra Moretti, only Welsh beers they had was a couple Gower brewery bottles - the best part of our whole evening. We didn’t get menus until 10 minutes after being seated, we were given the wrong starter, and the pork belly and roast beef mains were very overcooked. If we were served this in a Toby Carvery I’d be more understanding, but for £65 you expect much higher quality for 2 courses and a beer each. The music was far too loud, the toilets unclean, and the decor just tacky and unwelcoming. The staff were very unprofessional and decided to put a loud party playlist on because they were feeling bored/tired. When we asked about the music on payment, one member of staff seemed very unhappy and quite rude that another member of staff was then going to switch the music back to the original mix. I would say that this place needs a complete overhaul in just about every way in order to appropriately represent Welsh food and an actual Welsh experience. As a proud Welshman I’d love to able to recommend a genuinely good Welsh restaurant/bar, but this place couldn’t be further from it. A prime spot like this on St Mary’s Street deserves so much better than this. I’ve rarely been so disappointed leaving a restaurant/bar.

Very disappointing - Unexperienced/untrained staff, no Welsh beers on tap, poor food (had a better roast beef dinner at a Toby Carvery), the starter I was served was not even on the set menu I ordered from. The women’s toilets were very dirty and unsanitary, I won’t go into exact detail, however, according to the cleaning rota on the wall, they hadn’t been cleaned since Saturday at 2pm (visited Sunday at 6pm). Honestly, I expect friendly and professional service along with cleanliness at any establishment - especially one at a prime location in the heart of Cardiff City Centre. Quite frankly embarrassing for the owners…

Popped in for hot chocolates on a cold day but the staff could not make us any so after warming up we left!

The food was good but we waited for over 90 minutes for it to arrive despite pre- ordering. Poorly handled by the manager when we complained. Several of our table had to leave before pudding. Lovely waitresses and waitors and deductions eventually but could have been much better handled.

First time visiting today, firstly the atmosphere is fantastic, when we walked in it was cosy, warm and inviting, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The food is OUTSTANDING 10/10 quality, tasty meals cooked by great chefs. Thank you so much for a very delicious meal also drinks are fantastic too, We will be back! X

Authentic Welsh food. Good value and really toasty

Lovely atmosphere with very friendly staff. Came in for a drink and a small bite and was very impressed. The soup and olives were delicious and the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and ensure that we had a good experience.
