Went for breakfast for a friend's birthday and it was pretty dire. Expensive, very small portions. I ordered the black pudding hash and it was literally a single hash brown cut into pieces with a sprinkle of tiny pieces of black pudding. Charged extra for a poached egg instead of fried even though it was offered elsewhere on the menu. Then my friend had paid a deposit and this wasn't removed from the bill until we requested it. Avoid.

I really enjoyed my visit to the Welsh House. We split the “A Taste of Wales” set and the food was delicious, especially the Welsh cakes and the lamb cawl - so tender! Service was a little slow considering we were one of the only parties there, but our server Samira was kind and checked in on us a few times while we waited. The inside is beautiful - it’s a shame the restaurant wasn’t fuller!

Food was low quality. We had overcooked pasta and a bit too sweet. And traditional lamb cawl. Portions were tiny. Not enough for a lunch. The serbice too slow. 40 minutes to be served food since we ordered and the restaurant wasn't even 10% full. I seriously don't suggest anybody to come here

The Welsh House was recommended to us for authentic cooking and we truly enjoyed our experience. On a windy summer day, the staff and food were warm and welcoming. We loved the Sunday roast - pork and beef were both delicious options. And the teenage boy who does not like mushrooms even enjoyed the rarebit. Thanks for a great dinner. We would definitely return again.

First visit here and we found it a pleasant restaurant. It was early evening when we went so it was lacking a bit in atmosphere but sure once it's busier it has a better vibe. We had the lamb platter and onion rings. The food was nice and tasty but I was expecting a platter to be on a board not in a bowl with the meat placed on salad. It was an ok amount for two but more chips could be provided as they were only really enough for one person. There is a 10% service charge which is explained when you get the bill.

Not many positives to say about this. Took a group of visiting colleagues for dinner as part of a work event. We were put in the back room on two long tables. There was no-one else in there so no real atmosphere. Felt like we were a nuisance just being there, one member of staff struggled to serve all 20 of us on his own with no help. Felt sorry for him. Food was all heavy and greasy. Pasta was overly creamy, dense and bland. No offer of parmesan etc. I felt too sorry for the one guy serving us everything to ask him. Rice pudding was dry and overcooked, served with dry popcorn (!?!) and a few drips of maple syrup. Paying for meals and drinks was a mess. We seem to have paid for quite a few drinks twice but they have pushed back on this. I am now having to collect receipts from visitors to Cardiff so that I can prove that they were double paid for. Not a great advert. Embarrassing. Expensive too for pub food.

We had the taste of Welsh and it was not bad. We liked the halloumi on the appetizers board, the rest were fried and oily. The lamb cawl was like home made and was comforting. The desserts were too sweet to our liking. The service was kind of slow.

Absolutely disgraceful experience, food took a long while to come for only two lots of poached eggs on muffins and a chicken wrap. Muffins were not cooked! No butter! Hard eggs, staff offered to have it remade but we couldn’t wait another 30 minutes for it to come. Wrap was just chicken and mayo nothing special for the price. Chefs were noisy and more keen on chatting with bar staff than making the food, they also kept shouting. So unprofessional. Then to top it all off, they automatically added on a 10% service charge without telling us! Why would we want to tip you for something so abysmal? No attempts at reconciliation were made. Not worth your money going here I would avoid 100%

Food was ok, not the "I'm-sure-to-come-again" sort. The Leek and Potato soup lacked depth of flavour. The Lamb platter for 2 is more like - Platter for 1.5 in terms of quantity. Slightly above average taste, but nothing to rave about. The final bill of £50 (with service charge included) for the above dishes simply isn't justified for the quality of the food. The server allocated to our table was nowhere to be seen after saying that he'll give us a few minutes to peruse the menu. We had to flag down another passing waitress who then served us for the rest of our time at the restaurant.

Chose the restaurant for a Welsh lunch experience while touring Cardiff with family and friends. But service was disappointingly slow. Spent an hour waiting on our mains. Spent more minutes waiting for dessert. And surprisingly waited a long time even for the bill! My toddler was growing impatient with all the wait so we let him down from the high chair. We even got told off by the staff to keep him still. Disappointing experience and do not recommend at all

Came here for a family meal hoping that it would be as good as the surrounding restaurants and we were bitterly disappointed. The service was extremely slow, the food was ok but nothing worth writing home about, and the decor feels tired already. For the same sort of money I could have had a much nicer meal at Tera Mera across the road, or I could have spent less and had a delicious pizza next door. Considering the quality of the neighbouring establishments, The Welsh House was a huge disappointment and seriously needs to up it's game.

I went with friends last Wednesday to Cardiff for a day while on holiday in Porthcawl. As we passed the Welsh House a young lady came to speak to us, telling us about the new menu. It sounded good so in we went, they took drinks order once we had our drinks they came a took the food order. That’s when it all went wrong 50 minutes later we asked about our meals, they are on the way only be a few minute, 15 minutes later still no food, it is on the way, we think they forgot the to put our order through. Next they said it is being cooked now that was an hour after we had ordered. Food came one order missing, the toast on the 2 meals was hard you couldn’t cut it. My toasted cheese sandwich came as a cheese roll and the lamb stew was more like a soup. They did apologise and gave us complimentary drinks but then put a service charge on the bill that we refused to pay. Service and food were not good and as we were only they for the day we did not want to spend nearly 2 hours waiting for lunch.

Liked the fact that we didn't feel rushed to order straight away. Obviously we all had different versions of the lunch from beef, to triple meat and vegetarian. We were able to add in lamb or swap it for another meat at an additional charge, all i can say it was well worth it as it was cooked beautifully as were all the meats. My friend also stated that the mushroom Wellington was amazing. Extra sides of creamed leaks and cauliflower cheese were ordered 👌 we all said we would definately return. Had family visiting from overseas and wanted to show some traditional Welsh dishes like my Granny used to make so we were delighted that the Welsh House even exists. For while we know Cardiff and the surrounds pride itself on having welsh produce in all the meals, there's just something different and lovely about having good home cooked traditional dishes but actually so hard to find in the city. We were warmly welcomed and given a fab table. Looked after by the friendly team from start to finish. We shared the taste of Wales sharing platter - utterly divine every.single.item. And then each ordered the faggots and mash, steak and welsh ale pie with mash and peas, as well as the pork and Leek sausages with mash. We were a bit concerned when our roast dinner came out within 7 minutes of ordering. And then we saw the 2/5 start food hygiene rating. My first visit to The Welsh house Cardiff on Saturday 8th Feb 25. We specifically booked a table to have a meal and watch the Rugby - Wales were playing. On arrival we were sat down at a table with no view of the TV. They had a big screen in the bar area which initially was not pulled down. They then had a change of heart and pulled it down. Still only two out of four of us could view this! We ordered drinks and viewed the menu. While waiting on the drinks we noticed the restaurant was FREEZING!! I asked the manager if he could turn the heating up, as it was cold, and he replied “it was out of his control”. So we spent the whole two hours at the restaurant with our coats on and very cold. The food arrived , and was very good but the whole experience was let down my the freezing cold restaurant. My husband went to pay the bill and we were given a 20% discount for the lack of heating. Although this was a nice gesture it did not make up for a very cold and unpleasant dining experience. I contacted the restaurant by email on the Monday to explain what had happened as I wanted to give them an opportunity to explain why the restaurant had no heating on,before leaving a negative review. They said they would call me. This call did not happen, hence my negative review.

I asked someone for a recommendation for lunch in Cardiff and if the person had said "There's a decent pub in town called The Welsh House", then my review might be more positive. But the fact is my wife and I were led to believe it was a quality restaurant, which it is not. I had starter of creamy garlic mushrooms on toast. Tasted like it had been sat in the fridge for a few days, and I'm no expert but I think the bread was too soft. My wife had the Steak and Welsh Ale Pie with chunk chips. She said the pie was good but the chips were fatty and gross. I had steak and chips. The medium rare steak was over cooked and I had the same chunky chips and agreed with my wife. We had a large bottle of still water and a larger shandy and our bill was more than £70, which shocked us despite the fact we live in London!

We returned to The Welsh House after having a great meal last January for my Birthday, this time opting to be further into the restaurant after being cold last year with the chilly blast from the front door opening. This year again we all had a lovely experience of great Roast lunches and my son said his Burger was superb. Plenty of meat with the three we had Beef, Lamb and I had roast Pork all arrived with roast potatoes and a seasoning ball that was delicious and a beautifully puffed Yorkshire pudding. The vegetables all hot and were spiced red cabbage, carrots, sprouts and swede. The only thing I can downgrade my rating on was the gravy, I have been a chef for over 16 years and have experience in many establishments now using a safe, gluten free vegan Bisto. The gravy tasted similar to a gravy mix rather than using all the meat juices they must have access to serving 4 different roasted meats. I was wondering,If only they used a great stock and made a classic reduced roast Jus/gravy then this dinner would be perfect, it's the main flavour over everything. We will return again and I have told friends and family about this almost perfect restaurant. Maybe it will be looked at 🙏🏻

My husband and I visited The Welsh House in Cardiff this afternoon and opted for their 3-course festive menu. The food was absolutely gorgeous—each course was beautifully presented and full of flavor. I also sampled several cocktails, all of which were delightful and perfectly crafted. The service was excellent despite the restaurant being extremely busy, with the staff working flat out to keep everything running smoothly. However, I must mention the limited seating; it felt a little cramped. They turned away numerous people who did not have reservations as well. The floor space could be put to much better use with extra tables added to facilitate more seating and thereby make the company more money. Additionally, every time the door opened, we were hit with a chilly blast of air, which was less than ideal on a cold evening. Overall, The Welsh House delivered on food, drinks, and service, but a bit more comfort would make it even better. We’d happily return for the delicious menu and warm hospitality!

Disappointing Experience at The Welsh House, Cardiff Our visit to The Welsh House was a letdown from start to finish. When we arrived, our table wasn’t ready, which wasn't the end of the world, it's christmas and so this happens, but there was no apology or explanation. We were asked to wait at the bar and just shuffled to the side. To make matters worse, there was only one person serving at the bar. We decided to try the roast, but it was utterly tasteless. The only part I could stomach was the Yorkshire pudding, which says a lot about the quality of the meal. For a place that presumably prides itself on its Welsh heritage, the food did not deliver, and I truly hope this isn’t what visitors to Wales, believe represents Welsh cuisine. The atmosphere was stale and lacked any vibrancy. While the decor seemed to aim for something traditional, it came across as dark, tacky and uninspired. The one redeeming feature was our friendly waiter, who did their best to make the experience pleasant despite everything else falling short. Unfortunately, even great service couldn’t salvage such a disappointing visit. I wouldn’t recommend this place and would strongly recommend anyone to stay clear.

Had a works Christmas lunch here. There were a lot of us, so I managed my expectations, but the food just wasn't up to the price tag. Soups were served cold when they should have been hot, portion sizes were much too small and the mains were all luke warm at best when served (but tasted nice). I didn't have dessert but those that did didn't seem too impressed. Disappointing all things considered.

Great Christmas lunchtime meal at the Welsh House, Cardiff. Staff very friendly, welcoming and professional. George was amazing and looked after us the whole time. Food was just lovely, well presented and hot. Would highly recommend a visit.

Service was slow. Food was ok. Expected a little more for a Christmas meal. It was sold as a Christmas menu but not even the tables were decorated.

We were seated at the corner, by the window. Despite multiple attempts to get the staff’s attention (and they were quite a few serving), we were ignored. I had to get up from my seat and go speak with a waiter and order our food. The food was tasty specially the cockles and it came relatively fast. After having the main course, we had to once again go up to the waiter in order to get the dessert menu. We chose the dessert and were told that the kitchen was closed. This was very disappointing having in mind all the time we had waited. As we were leaving, we noticed that the group sitting next to our table was also unhappy with the service and complained about missing some of the drinks they ordered. We hope they improve their service otherwise they might lose customers.

Nice place with delicious food but I like the old one in Cardiff bay more due to the location. But it's worthwhile getting food in this restaurant.

Very overhyped. I would say the only thing that was good were the fries, everything else is extremely average and overpriced. Steak was pretty tasteless and tiny portion. They just try to fill you up on carbs. Spend your money elsewhere.

Fantastic! So lucky to have this in our doorstep! The staff are always so friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable! We love the concept! - it’s great fun for a group! They change their cheese board options regularly (weekly?) and it’s great fun to try different things and the quality/presentation is always great! I also think it’s excellent value for money. They often offer cheeses you wouldn’t find at Sainsburys cheese counter …. The wines change regularly and are always excellent with very accurate descriptions! Very well priced too! They are extremely accommodating of allergies (nut in our case) and we really felt cared for and that the staff took this very seriously whilst also being accommodating! A great place- thank you!
