Maison de Boeuf in Cardiff

The most beautiful restaurant i’ve ever been to!! Service was absolutely incredible, the staff were so friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. Definitely need to book multiple weeks in advance!!! The steak was absolutely amazing and seconds of the steak, fries and sauce were offered!!!

Don't go for the food if you're a foodie, or have spent time in France as you'll be disappointed. Stay for the value for money, quantity of food (you're offered more fries if you want them) and randomness of the place I'm Wales. We were scouting for new places to put on our Airbnb guidebook (we rent out our spare room occasionally) too but have decided to opt out of adding Maison de Bœuf as it isn't quite there yet. A few of our other independent favourites in the city centre were fully booked on Saturday night so we thought the time had come to attempt Maison de Bœuf. Luckily, we managed to grab a table for two outside in the arcade without a booking. The menu was very simple which is the norm in France and we ended up going for a full 3 courses. The meal itself is incredibly good value for money because the portions are very generous. We went for the 3 set course and had the French onion soup and cheese souffle, veggie and real steak and fries. I usually love esgargots but didn't want to risk eating them here and tend to stick to places I can guarantee source very high quality snails. I left feeling glad that I didn't take the risk, if quality of steak was anything to go by. The meal had notable rich flavours you'd usually find in French cooking but perhaps wasn't as refined as you'd usually expect when eating French food. It was definitely a case of quantity over quality and while the food tasted good enough I wouldn't hurry back to eat here. The quality of the steak wasn't very good and it was a bit chewy. The plant based steak was an interesting idea to include but the menu would be improved if it was replaced with a traditionally non meat French dish. It would be an OK replacement if you were cooking at home but I would expect something more creative in a restaurant. As someone who usually opts for the non meat option in restaurant it was predictably disappointing. The desserts were nice enough. The creme brulee was a little bit too bitter and I feel a profiterole works better when it's smaller as it loses the intensity of flavour when it's super sized. The size sacrifices flavour in order to be gimmicky. Idk. This restaurant kinda feels like a place that has been opened by people who aren't really into food that much but just like the idea of having a French themed restaurant? The atmosphere on the other hand was wonderful and the service was attentive. This establishment definitely feels like a bit of a theme restaurant which could be very fun if you went in a group or on a date during their jazz night on a Thursday. I also told my partner it might possibly be an ideal place to take someone before a Rugby game due to the thematic vibes and quantity of food. It isn't a place I would rush back to for the food necessarily as there are much much better offerings in the city centre for steak frites (Pasture or even a chain like Côte). I'd be very interested to hear a French persons opinion of the place. My impression is that they would be outraged or comparable to a meal at Whetherspoons for the British? Happy to be disproved though.

My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at this beautiful, romantic restaurant. Lovely ambience and delicious food! We’ll definitely be back!

We booked for a group of 14 in the private dining room which was beautiful and perfect that everyone could talk to each other. everyone enjoyed the food, especially the French onion soup and the cheese soufflé starters. Allergies and dietary requirements were accommodated as best as possible

I am not a huge fan for French food . Onion soup was a bit overrated , but don’t get me wrong , it is good ! Steak was also reasonably good, they will give you a second round of steak . Overall it is nice and vibe is so good . Obviously the staff is very busy and kind of tense ..!

Wonderful dinner at this lovely French steak bistro. Food is exceptional and the set menu makes it good value. The cheese soufflé is amazing but the decadent French onion soup is something else. Fantastic steak and frites, made even better when they offer you another helping of both steak and fries. The apple tart tatin was excellent, as we're the profiteroles and creme brulee. Great service and lovely atmosphere - highly recommended.

Really wanted to try this place for ages. Finally got to visit for a belated valentines day dinner. The live music on a Thursday is wonderful and really feels as though you're in a little restaurant in France on holiday. The service was brilliant and we felt so looked after, special mention to the staff member who greeted us, was a male with longish hair (sorry I don't know his name!). The menu although limited, offers everything you'd expect and does not disappoint. My partner really enjoyed the escargot starter and as expected, the steak was delicious. Would highly recommend for a special date night and definitely go on a Thursday to enjoy the live music if you can.

Wouldn’t recommend. Staff great, food poor. Steak swamped with a tasteless poorly seasoned sauce/gravy, consequently unable to see or taste the steak and curiously the main course was served on a side plate.

First visit, pleasantly surprised, just like the real France, in all respects, loved it!

Very authentic. The tables are close together which encourages people to put their phones away and actually talk to each other. Very limited menu but what's available is very good. Ask about their private room if your a large group.

1 thing spoilt what was a beautiful experience. Food, decor, waiting staff, jazz band were fabulous. Upon leaving and paying, my partner approached a member if staff with cash to pay for the bill including a generous tip. The member of staff was very abrupt in saying that cash is not accepted and does he have a card. To which my partner replied no, I have cash and there is also a generous tip included. No acknowledgement or thanks for the tip. Then asked again, can you pay another way. To which my partner replied no. At no point were we made aware of the payment policy when making the booking over the phone or when we entered the restaurant. As cash is the only Bristhish legal tender it was reasonable to assume cash would be accepted. The staff member then asked my partner if I could pay. We both found this extremely rude. My partner was treating me to dinner and to ask me to pay was crass and rude. We left the cash removing the tip and will not be returning

Steaks were OK. I've had much better elsewhere. French onion soup was great and a huge portion for a starter. Place was boiling hot and cramped. Service was good.

Tania was the best host, she was so kind and informative about all the food and gave excellent recommendations. Food was top notch and the private dining room was amazing.

MAISON DE BOEUF | Cardiff Castle Arcade, City Centre Always late to the party, but always last at the bar 🍷 Open since April 2023, I am clearly late for the hype train of Maison de Boeuf 🇫🇷 Once a new restaurant has been the talk of the town and time has moved on, I do worry they lose their charm and spark, but I can officially declare that Maison De Beouf is still shining bright! ✨8 reasons why Maison De Beouf is still worth the hype. 1. The Theme: when raising a glass to a Paris classic, you risk becoming a parody, but the Barker Group have executed this perfectly. Like, really well. 2. The Decor: Stunnen! I’m a sucker for small French bistro decor anyway and this place has it all, but really tastefully. Cardiff really needed this and it truly is Cardiff’s most romantic restaurant. 3. The Music: All French Jazz. Heaven! The music was the perfect volume where you could both swoon with your date and also hold a conversation. 4. The Staff: Tentative, Knowledgeable, Suave, Well-Dressed. 5. The Chips: an entire category in itself. I don’t know what they put in them, but they were bloody phenomenal. Proper crispy and French kissed with garlic. 6. The Food: Extremely good food. I also went with my brother who is the biggest foodie I know and he was so impressed. 7. The Seconds: without any warning or theatrical scene, they serve you a second portion of steak and chips. Sold! 8. Live Jazz Thursdays: I’m there!! Me and my son loved the atmosphere in the corridors of the streets. Also, the food was very decent and well priced while the waiter we had, Ashu, was super nice and easy to talk with. Definitely recommend this place

The worst meat alternative I have ever eaten and It's almost the same price as the meat option! The "vegan steak" was completely over cooked and no effort or care had been taken over the preparation. The sauce served was some melted butter with raw garlic. When I brought this to the attention of our waiter, he said, we get complaints like this a lot. DO NOT visit as a vegetarian or vegan!!!

Quirky limited menu French restaurant situated in the Castle Arcade. Both starters we had were delicious, French onion soup and cheese soufflé and a large portions. The Steak Frites came on a 3/4 plate and looked a little stingy for £22, but there was a surprise, there was a second serving. They came out with a whole plater of steak and another of frites. The steak comes in a sauce, they didn’t mention, never had a steak frites like that before. Too full to try the desserts. Very busy when we were there, had to sit under the heaters in arcade itself. Blankets available.

Feels like a little bit of France hidden in Cardiff. Beautiful cosy atmosphere, each course is 10/10. Definitely recommend getting the tarte tartan! Steak with their secret sauce is just perfect 🙏

The France-by-way-of-Disneyland decor and arcade location make a great hideaway for an afternoon drink. However, for such a simple menu, you would expect the food to be better. Over seasoned and less than hot. Steaks were chopped into oblivion and dished out in tedious second serving ritual, which has the facade of generosity but is more like wartime rationioning in an occupied France. So, points for authenticity, I guess.

We had an amazing time. The staff especially Victor was great. The food was delicious and great atmosphere.

The place was full of people so we had to book in advance. We got the fixed menu with the French onion soup. The soup tasted good at the start but after a while we tasted alcohol in the soup which wasn’t really pleasant. The steak with the walnut sauce tasted excellent, which I would recommend. We ordered the crossaint dessert but somehow they decided to give us the creme brûlée, which we were disappointed a bit by the misinformation. The waiting time is too long, we had to wait an hour just for the steak to arrive. Overall it’s alright. It’s a quite cute French restaurant to go to.

Barkers are taking over and Cardiff is much better for it. For a place that has been open for only a few months, it has taken the town by storm with a simple, straightforward, and unpretentious take on a French classic. The menu is steak, chips, salad, vegetarian options, and desserts. They cook each to a high quality so you don't need much else. The steaks are juicy and delicious, the chips are nice and crispy (not too greasy either). The salad is well-seasoned, the desserts are small but impactful. The drinks are a staple for a chain that has perfected the formula of quantity AND quality. You can easily head down for a nice meal at Maison de Boeuf, then walk straight to Gin and Juice for an after-meal drink. Pure bliss. Thank you!

Lovely venue with friendly staff, serving half a steak drowning in sauce with overly crispy fries piled high. To start, the cheese soufflé was more of a dense cheese scone, and 2 of the escargot shells were empty. Went elsewhere for dessert. Maybe a better lunch option, but overall, underwhelming, we won't be rushing back.

Me and my partner came here for our anniversary and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Our server Keira was so pleasant and welcoming too. Despite the restaurant’s somewhat limited menu, our food was absolutely delicious! It’s not like any typical restaurant, by coming here you are paying for the experience of a Parisian restaurant. Thank you and we hope to return soon.

Beautiful little restaurant located in the castle arcade - wonderful servers and the atmosphere especially later on in the day feels magical. The food was tasty, you get seconds as well! The simplicity of the menu stops any choice anxiety. Very interesting cocktail menu, would go again to try out some more.

Absolutely wonderful dining atmosphere - beautiful interior with excellent music playing. The soufflé was delicious, and the fries were cooked to perfection - crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. The steak and tarte tatin were also both very nice. Mocktails were exceptional. 8.5/10 for the food. 10/10 for the atmosphere.

Incroyable! A true Parisian experience, the atmosphere is amazing, going for dinner truly felt like stepping into Paris for the evening. Simple yet brilliant menu of steak, frites, and a simple salad. We choice medium and rare for our steaks, i assume they do well done as well, the steak was cooked perfectly, and they offer a second round of both steak and frites! So you won't be going hungry! The onion soup and escargot were amazing to start with, and good selection of cocktails and wine as well. Definitely recommend for a nice romantic evening.

We ate here for my mothers birthday a few weeks ago. The prices are reasonable and the staff were lovely. The setting takes you away from the streets of Cardiff to the dimly lit cobbles of the oldest arrondissments! We loved it.

Walking through the arcade was just lovely. The atmosphere in the restaurant was perfect and you really feel like you could be in France. Simple but perfect set menu was so delicious. The cheese soufflé was to die for!! The steak Fritz was one of the best I’ve had and cooked perfectly. This will be a regular place for us when in Cardiff. Highly recommended

Enjoyable experience for our anniversary, the onion soup starter is the actual star for this restaurant. It was lovely. Wasn't too keen on the main meal sauce but the beef and chips were lovely. Certainly worth a try.

We had an exceptional meal here on Saturday night. We were extremely grateful to get a table, without a reservation. The French theme has been tastefully and thoughtfully done, it didn't feel cliché and we were overjoyed by the subtle décor and carefully curated atmosphere. This restaurant is a prime example of a simple menu done really well. My only improvement food wise would be the Crème Brule - though a generous size, perfectly set, with a brilliant crack of sugar across the top, I was slightly disappointed not to see or taste any of those special flecks of fresh vanilla running through it meaning it was lacking the all important flavour of vanilla! I appreciate the high cost of vanilla however for a rather expensive dessert (£8.45) it definitely deserved that added touch to elevate it! The rest couldn't be faulted. The staff were very sweet and friendly, we were so excited when we were offered second servings of steak and chips, we've never experienced that in a restaurant before - it really added to the value of the meal. We came away feeling extremely full and satisfied and it was the nearest I felt to experiencing a meal in Paris without the cost of flying there! Thank you!

We had a really nice dinner at Maison de Boeuf. There was an incredible atmosphere and it was very Parisian. Good value on the menu with 2 or 3 course options. Staff were all very friendly and came around to offer second portions. My only complaint would be that the restaurant was extremely warm.

Disappointing. Overpriced. Lukewarm food. Would not recommend and won’t be returning.

Great atmosphere, good service, good wine but the food wasn't my cup of tea. French onion soup I didn't enjoy so much, the soup itself was nice but after eating the bread I was left with a big stodge of tasteless cheese in a bowl filled with not the softest cooked Onions and a little bit of soup hidden away. Apparantally the souffle was very good though. Steak arrives covered in a sauce, it's a nice herby sauce but I would ask next time to be on the side as it masks all the flavour of what was a really nicely cooked steak which was a shame. They seem to give you half your steak initially, then later on they ask if you want more which just seems to be the rest of your own steak... Going to assume this is a French thing but seemed a bit pointless to me. Left feeling slightly unfulfilled if I'm honest.

Very similar to “Le Relais de l’Entrecôte” in Paris (and London) with a single main menu item - steak & fries (well or a veggie option). Atmosphere is great! Food also great - with a second serving of streak & fries, and some great cocktails. Only feedback to the restaurant — by not allowing tipping by card and requiring that it’s done separately by QR code (where TipJar adds their own processing fee!) you’re just making things harder and reducing tips.

Very beautiful place. As a french I have to say that it is a really good restaurant. The food is very good and the prices are really correct. The atmosphere is very similar to a Parisian restaurant and the waiters are very nice. Do not hesitate to eat there.

Great experience! Had the private room, they accommodated 6 of us even though the website said minimum of 8 in the private room. The service and food was amazing! There was a girl on her first shift, she did great! Was very impressed with everything. The private room was amazing for a birthday party, they accommodated everything I asked. Very pleased. Cocktails were amazing!

The moment I stepped in, the cozy, retro ambiance transported me back in time. The service was exceptional; our server, I didn’t get his name, he was attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home. Now, let’s talk about the food! We ordered deux plats, including steaks perfectly cooked, and served with a generous portion of crispy french fries. What really stood out was the affordability. Great food at such reasonable prices is a rare find these days. We left with full bellies and happy hearts, planning to return soon. Maison de bœuf is a must-visit for anyone looking for a relaxed, wallet-friendly dining experience. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Food was alright, I like the 2nd service option, nice touch but the tables had cheap rustling paper on them, just took away some of the feel around the atmosphere and decor Server was great and looked after us. I had to knock off a star because of the heat. It was just too hot in there for me. Spent 2 hours sweating

10/10 Absolutely fabulous! Went for my boyfriends 27th birthday and all staff were so lovely! Food was fantastic, definitely recommend the French onion soup!

I don’t understand how anyone could dislike this place. The decor and vibe is absolutely amazing. I could not stop smiling! The music was a really good touch too. As for the food.. the only complaint I have is that I was so full I felt sick! It was absolutely amazing. Can’t thank the waitress enough for a fab service. Will return again in a heartbeat

An absolute delight! The ambience, the service, the food, the drinks, it was all magnifique! Our group went with the Onion Soup and the Soufflé and both were really delicious and authentically French. The main was steak for all of us - one small annoyance is the only allowing Rare / Medium / Well Done as one of our party really wanted medium-well done. They opted for well done and although it wasn’t quite what she wanted it was delicious nonetheless. Second helpings were a lovely delight and the sauce is stunning. Tarte Tatin was dessert of the day and it was so rich and delicious with cinnamon and apple - beautiful. I will also say there was a customer at a nearby table who seemed determined to complain. Firstly that the steak was tough, then that it was cold, then something else and finally took issue with it being cashless payments (it seemed very much like this was a planned exercise as the person dining with him was mortified and said “I told you we have to pay on card, why are you doing this?” The staff handled this person impeccably well and offered resolution to any and all gripes presented in a polite, measured and thoroughly professional way. Bravo to them!

One of my favourite treats. This restaurant transports me straight back to a recent visit to Paris. Very relaxed atmosphere in the restaurant. With food served at reasonable price and the attentiveness from staff made my evening perfect. I started with French Onion soup which is one of my favourite rich soups, this is a great way to start a meal with a good balance of crouton and bread accompanying the soup . With enough time to enjoy the wine between courses, we get to the steak and frites, this combined with the “secret sauce” leave you wanting more and more is what you get. Round two, second helpings. Dessert is always a favourite course for me and their Crème Brûlée was lovely. Perfectly set with a crisp caramel on top. The quality of food here was comparable to my recent visit to Le Entrecôte in Paris, minus the que and simple table setting, this added an intimate feeling to the experience

Enjoyed my time here and they are certainly off to a fantastic start. Reasonably priced but limited menu ( we went for the 3 course menu ) and were happy with the portion of steak/chips. I liked the vibe a lot, definitely felt parisien and the waiter was very kind. It was the limited menu that was brought it down to 4 for me but I'm sure that will change fairly soon!

A beautiful ‘Parisian’ bistro but unfortunately the food doesn’t match the surroundings. No Champagne by the glass and with such a limited menu, you shouldn’t run out of anything (the crème brûlée was off menu by our 7:30pm dinner)

Absolutely amazing dining experience here for an evening meal. I was initially concerned about the price of the menu (£25 for a 2 course meal and £30 for a 3 course meal), however, the quality of the food, the environment and the service made this price very reasonable. My partner and I opted for the 2 course menu as after our steak we were absolutely stuffed! The starters were lovely but the main course was to die for! Be advised that they can only do the steak rare, medium or well done. However, if you ask for medium without blood it comes exactly as ordered (best cooked steak I've ever had!). The secret sauce was amazing (if they ask if you want more ... always say yes!). There is a second serving of the steak, fries and secret sauce which made my partner very happy. Overall, it is definitely worth the price for an authentic Parisian meal. Shout out to Keira who was an amazing waitress for us.

The chefs of Maison de Boeuf can come cook in my maison any day. The cheese soufflé was delicieux, the onion soup was fabuleux, and the steak frites was merveilleux. Lovely service from the staff; Keira was a really attentive waitress who made my partners day by commenting on her band t-shirt. The Parisian prices seemed high at first but the second serving as well as the quality of the food soon justified it.

Lovely atmosphere. However, the food does not live up to the place. It’s not bad, but I would not call it authentic. The steak was fantastic, but the French fries were frozen. They were not bad (double-fried), but I was expecting fresh-cut and artisanal fries. My onion soup was good, not that top-notch you can eat around in Paris in everyday restaurants, but good enough. I think there was a bit of microwaving and instant soup powder involved in getting it ready to serve, but hey! Won’t say it was :) Please don’t take my word for it. I was just judging the flavours. I also am sorry that some more authentic bread is not served, or at least given as an option. I appreciate the attempt to recreate the French baguette, but I think a local sourdough would have gone better. I do recommend the place for the service and fantastic staff. The location is also great. The food is not bad, but... Seriously, worth a visit, everyone!

The experience was pleasant. I knew I would be eating the vegetarian option and thoroughly enjoyed the French onion soup. But £25 for soup, fries and a quorn fillet was overpriced. The lettuce is served in a Pyrex dish and the waitress writing the order on the paper table cloth takes away from the experience. My friend asked for her steak to be cooked medium rare and this was declined. Her steak was tough but edible. There was no explanation about the second meat serving - there isn’t a second veggie serving. And the steak had been left in a silver tray on a trivet that the candles were not lit under. Overall it’s far from Paris in Cardiff, it was a little underwhelming and could be improved. The cocktails were nice and we left after the main course as the seating inside is close to the neighboring tables and for us less than a metre away from 9 loud students was not where we wanted to enjoy a post dinner coffee.

If you like what's on the short menu you can't go wrong. Onion soup is fantastic The steak and chips is also fantastic and rare is properly rare, the steak comes in a super tasty sauce, the chips are crisp and delicious. And you get two servings which was more than enough for me. Drinks menu is excellent with everything from cocktails and champagne through cider to lager, rum and mezcal.

My girlfriend and I absolutely loved this restaurant. Both of us especially appreciated the service from Mia, who made great conversation with us and assisted me with an issue regarding my dietary requirements promptly and with ease. Our meal was spectacular and we were both very excited when we were offered a second helping! Would definitely go again, and would absolutely recommend!

If you like a french experience you will love this restaurant. The cheese soufflé tasted great and my partner really enjoyed the French onion soup. The main was well cooked and we were offered seconds which unfortunately meant we were too full for desert.
