An authentic Parisien themed restaurant, limited menu, onion soup, steak frites cooked medium and profiterole all for reasonable costs, restaurant is cozy but can get too warm and feel claustophobic, small tables and uncomfortable chairs, I also don't recommend the house white. Seating available outside in the Castle Arcade. Update 25.10.24 - note prices have shot up a little since opening. 2 & 3 course now £28.95 and £34.95 respectively.

This is the 3rd time I’ve eaten here, and I’m left with 2 questions. 1. Why have the steak portions gotten significantly smaller (4 thin slices followed by 3 more thin slices for the 2nd round) while the price remains the same? 2. Why were we only allowed a 5pm reservation while literally more than half of the restaurant stayed empty during our entire 90 minute meal? [Watching your waiters huddle together near our table to whisper and stare was also unpleasant to say the least. I will not be coming back for a 4th time.]

The atmosphere is extremely cosy and comforting and the music adds a very nice ambience. Whilst the steak and fries were really delicious, the steak itself came as pre-cut, thin slices which was a very disappointing portion especially for the price. That being said, the peppercorn sauce was incredible and the fries were some of the best fries Ive ever eaten. Also, the portion size was rectified by our lovely waitress Holly coming by and offering to give us extra steak and fries because they had some left over! Overall I probably wouldn’t dine here again, but it is a very nice experience for a special occasion. Made 100% worth it by the amazing service we received, every single member of staff was super friendly and accommodating <3

This restaurant operates on the concept that it only does a few dishes, extremely well. So be aware of this - but if you like steak (or vegan steak) it is incredible. The fries were perfectly crispy and the steak melt-in-your-mouth. As a bonus, there was a second portion available. I would also like to mention the creme brulee which was a great end to the meal and the only dish I managed to get a photo of. Servers were friendly and efficient, and I really liked the overall decor. Just be aware it's a little hard to find if it's later on and part of the arcade is shut off. You have to find "Gin and Juice" and go through there.

I enjoyed this alot more than I expected to. I'm a big fan of the simple concept of doing one thing, and doing it very very well. In my mind, I was at a 8 maybe even a 9/10 rating, then the server arrived with extra steak, fries and sauce for a second serving. Excellent. Decent value for a city center restaurant. Cute restaurant that transports you to France. I'd go back again for sure. Well worth a visit. They even do a fully vegan version of the same dish. Oh. And I like the wine options. The profiterole was not to my liking. I do think it was lacking overall compared to the rest of the meal.

Maison de Boeuf, Cardiff is located in a lovely arcade and we had a table situated outside. The menu is pretty restricted and you can do a 3 course or two course option. This seems to be modelled on the Le Relais de Venise in London which is not a bad thing, great steak and chips main course (With the second serving offered), finished with a Creme Brulee. Friendly and efficient staff, can very much recommend.

Don’t bother if you’re not a meat eater. I know that sounds stupid, but I chose the vegan steak and a) was looked at like I had 3 heads and b) the meat eaters get offered a second serving of meat and chips and I didn’t get anything despite paying the exact same as the meat dish (which in itself was odd). Lovely French restaurant in thr heart of Cardiff. The menu may seem limited but I appreciate focusing on a few dishes they can do extremely well! My partner and I ordered the onion soup and cheese souffle for starters which were delicious. The mains were perfectly cooked and seasoned and we were pleasantly surprised by the top up offer during our meal. Unfortunately, we were too full to have dessert but next time might share a starter and the dessert between us. The whole experience couldn't be better, staff are friendly and professional, the meal was accompanied by live jazz band (apparently this is only on Thursdays) and the restaurant is beautifully decorated creating very romantic ambience. We visited 2 weeks ago and coming back tonight again with friends who are visiting us in Cardiff. I can't wait!

I see reviews on here saying it shouldnt be house of beef, not proper steak etc etc. Once you understand what the concept is here you would know it wasnt a steakhouse. This is a British interpretation of the French institution that is Le Relais de Venise. The concept is quite simple with a couple of starters, a couple of desserts and the main is just sliced tri tip steak, fries, steak sauce and a basic salad that gets refilled one more time. Thats what you go for. Its not a steak house and its not trying to be. The surroundings are great and the wine is decent. The onion soup is a good attempt, the cheese souffle less so. Cant fault the steak and chips main although the salad being just endive is a bit unusual. The cheese plate for dessert is decent. I would go again

Incredible food and great atmosphere. Perfect for a date night or anniversary. Low lighting and great ambiance. We both had the cheese soufflé for starter and it was delightful, soft and fluffy and the sauce was amazing. The steak and chips were perfect. They arrive on quite a small plate however the portion was plenty. The steak and chips are fabulous but the best bit is the sauce. They won’t tell you what’s in it and I can’t accurately describe it but it’s delightful. To cap it off they brought over more steak towards the end of the meal. The couple next to us were celebrating their anniversary and they had a free ice cream dessert. The service was excellent. Very polite and helpful without being in your face. Felt like I was back in Paris ... I have a great love for French food, and I was so excited to visit this restaurant when I was told we were going for my birthday, and I must say I did not leave feeling disappointed. The food itself was just on point, from the perfectly cooked Escargots, Steak that was melt in the mouth and served with some of the tastiest chips I have ever had ... finishing off with an amazing Apple Tarte Tatin! Yes, this restaurant has a very limited menu and I have noticed alot of people commenting about how Steak Frites is the only main available, and there were even a few people joking about this in the restaurant. However, it means they can focus on what they do best and put more love into the limited number of dishes. If you want 20 options, go to your local weatherspoons, and you'll see the quality difference. Would I go again? Yes ... at a drop of a hat. The service was amazing and did not feel rushed at all despite having only a 2 hour limit. I would say there is room for improvement, just like any other restaurant there is always room for improvement. The little things that really annoyed me were the paper table covers, the extremely close tables, and the fact they didn't just put all the steak on my plate and served it in 2 servings ... I would like to understand why they do this, because it makes no sense to me as the close tables reduces the romantic atmosphere, and the Steak being stored in containers for the 2nd serving would cause the Steak to overcook as its sat keeping warm. Apart from these little annoyances, it's been the best dining experience I have had a while and highly recommend.

The restaurant was gorgeous and had a very relaxing and sophisticated atmosphere. Staff were friendly and attentive for most of the evening. Mine and my partner’s issue came upon receiving our steak, which was brought to us far later than the tables around us but we forgave considering we had an allergen. After watching a few tables around us receive second helpings of chips and steak, we weren’t too phased by what looked like small portions. We enjoyed the food and the steaks were cooked exactly as requested. After about 5 minutes of waiting with empty plates, a waiter approached and asked if we had finished. Surprised, we politely asked if we would be receiving our second part. After a muffled discussion with his colleague, the waiter then informed us that due to the allergen, we had been given our whole meal in one portion. We were a little disappointed to hear this, as having the tables so close together allowed us a front row seat to other people’s meals, and we definitely did not get as much food as was offered to other people. For 23£ a portion, to not even receive your whole steak is really strange. This made the value for money significantly worse for someone visiting the restaurant with an allergen, so I really wouldn’t recommend it. At the very least, my partner and I agreed they should’ve clarified with us beforehand that the extra servings we were watching being given to everyone else would not apply to us. We ended up not having dessert having felt sufficiently ripped off as it was, though in the interest of fairness the restaurant did offer a complimentary glass of ice cream as it was my partner’s birthday, which was lovely.

Overhyped. The restaurant looks like an extremely romantic French cuisine experience from the outside yet the entire experience felt rushed. The tables are very close to one another ruining the atmosphere created by the ambience. The food was also disappointing. I had the escargot as a starter which was good however the French onion soup my partner had was ruined by the hard bread. The steak was also definitely unseasoned when cooked which the sauce desperately tried to hide. The menu is also rather limited which further adds to the rushed feel of the restaurant. The desserts we had were both disappointing the apple tart was bland and the giant profiterole was so bad I literally spat it out which is something I've never done before. The cocktails however fantastic! The bartender was the only saving grace. For the price I expected more. I unfortunately wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone or come again. Also shoutout to the waiter for kicking us outside to finish our port after the two hours when there was 4 empty tables that was the perfect end to us spending £100 on a "romantic" dinner

Don't go for the food if you're a foodie, or have spent time in France as you'll be disappointed. Stay for the value for money, quantity of food (you're offered more fries if you want them) and randomness of the place I'm Wales. We were scouting for new places to put on our Airbnb guidebook (we rent out our spare room occasionally) too but have decided to opt out of adding Maison de Bœuf as it isn't quite there yet. A few of our other independent favourites in the city centre were fully booked on Saturday night so we thought the time had come to attempt Maison de Bœuf. Luckily, we managed to grab a table for two outside in the arcade without a booking. The menu was very simple which is the norm in France and we ended up going for a full 3 courses. The meal itself is incredibly good value for money because the portions are very generous. We went for the 3 set course and had the French onion soup and cheese souffle, veggie and real steak and fries. I usually love esgargots but didn't want to risk eating them here and tend to stick to places I can guarantee source very high quality snails. I left feeling glad that I didn't take the risk, if quality of steak was anything to go by. The meal had notable rich flavours you'd usually find in French cooking but perhaps wasn't as refined as you'd usually expect when eating French food. It was definitely a case of quantity over quality and while the food tasted good enough I wouldn't hurry back to eat here. The quality of the steak wasn't very good and it was a bit chewy. The plant based steak was an interesting idea to include but the menu would be improved if it was replaced with a traditionally non meat French dish. It would be an OK replacement if you were cooking at home but I would expect something more creative in a restaurant. As someone who usually opts for the non meat option in restaurant it was predictably disappointing. The desserts were nice enough. The creme brulee was a little bit too bitter and I feel a profiterole works better when it's smaller as it loses the intensity of flavour when it's super sized. The size sacrifices flavour in order to be gimmicky. Idk. This restaurant kinda feels like a place that has been opened by people who aren't really into food that much but just like the idea of having a French themed restaurant? The atmosphere on the other hand was wonderful and the service was attentive. This establishment definitely feels like a bit of a theme restaurant which could be very fun if you went in a group or on a date during their jazz night on a Thursday. I also told my partner it might possibly be an ideal place to take someone before a Rugby game due to the thematic vibes and quantity of food. It isn't a place I would rush back to for the food necessarily as there are much much better offerings in the city centre for steak frites (Pasture or even a chain like Côte). I'd be very interested to hear a French persons opinion of the place. My impression is that they would be outraged or comparable to a meal at Whetherspoons for the British? Happy to be disproved though.

The member of staff was very abrupt in saying that cash is not accepted and does he have a card. To which my partner replied no, I have cash and there is also a generous tip included. No acknowledgement or thanks for the tip. Then asked again, can you pay another way. To which my partner replied no. At no point were we made aware of the payment policy when making the booking over the phone or when we entered the restaurant. As cash is the only Bristhish legal tender it was reasonable to assume cash would be accepted. The staff member then asked my partner if I could pay. We both found this extremely rude. My partner was treating me to dinner and to ask me to pay was crass and rude. We left the cash removing the tip and will not be returning

Steaks were OK. I've had much better elsewhere. French onion soup was great and a huge portion for a starter. Place was boiling hot and cramped. Service was good.

MAISON DE BOEUF | Cardiff Castle Arcade, City Centre Always late to the party, but always last at the bar 🍷 Open since April 2023, I am clearly late for the hype train of Maison de Boeuf 🇫🇷 Once a new restaurant has been the talk of the town and time has moved on, I do worry they lose their charm and spark, but I can officially declare that Maison De Beouf is still shining bright! ✨8 reasons why Maison De Beouf is still worth the hype. 1. The Theme: when raising a glass to a Paris classic, you risk becoming a parody, but the Barker Group have executed this perfectly. Like, really well. 2. The Decor: Stunnen! I’m a sucker for small French bistro decor anyway and this place has it all, but really tastefully. Cardiff really needed this and it truly is Cardiff’s most romantic restaurant. 3. The Music: All French Jazz. Heaven! The music was the perfect volume where you could both swoon with your date and also hold a conversation. 4. The Staff: Tentative, Knowledgeable, Suave, Well-Dressed. 5. The Chips: an entire category in itself. I don’t know what they put in them, but they were bloody phenomenal. Proper crispy and French kissed with garlic. 6. The Food: Extremely good food. I also went with my brother who is the biggest foodie I know and he was so impressed. 7. The Seconds: without any warning or theatrical scene, they serve you a second portion of steak and chips. Sold! 8. Live Jazz Thursdays: I’m there!! Me and my son loved the atmosphere in the corridors of the streets. Also, the food was very decent and well priced while the waiter we had, Ashu, was super nice and easy to talk with. Definitely recommend this place

The worst meat alternative I have ever eaten and It's almost the same price as the meat option! The "vegan steak" was completely over cooked and no effort or care had been taken over the preparation. The sauce served was some melted butter with raw garlic. When I brought this to the attention of our waiter, he said, we get complaints like this a lot. DO NOT visit as a vegetarian or vegan!!!

Quirky limited menu French restaurant situated in the Castle Arcade. Both starters we had were delicious, French onion soup and cheese soufflé and a large portions. The Steak Frites came on a 3/4 plate and looked a little stingy for £22, but there was a surprise, there was a second serving. They came out with a whole plater of steak and another of frites. The steak comes in a sauce, they didn’t mention, never had a steak frites like that before. Too full to try the desserts. Very busy when we were there, had to sit under the heaters in arcade itself. Blankets available.

Feels like a little bit of France hidden in Cardiff. Beautiful cosy atmosphere, each course is 10/10. Definitely recommend getting the tarte tartan! Steak with their secret sauce is just perfect 🙏

The France-by-way-of-Disneyland decor and arcade location make a great hideaway for an afternoon drink. However, for such a simple menu, you would expect the food to be better. Over seasoned and less than hot. Steaks were chopped into oblivion and dished out in tedious second serving ritual, which has the facade of generosity but is more like wartime rationioning in an occupied France. So, points for authenticity, I guess.

The place was full of people so we had to book in advance. We got the fixed menu with the French onion soup. The soup tasted good at the start but after a while we tasted alcohol in the soup which wasn’t really pleasant. The steak with the walnut sauce tasted excellent, which I would recommend. We ordered the crossaint dessert but somehow they decided to give us the creme brûlée, which we were disappointed a bit by the misinformation. The waiting time is too long, we had to wait an hour just for the steak to arrive. Overall it’s alright. It’s a quite cute French restaurant to go to.

Barkers are taking over and Cardiff is much better for it. For a place that has been open for only a few months, it has taken the town by storm with a simple, straightforward, and unpretentious take on a French classic. The menu is steak, chips, salad, vegetarian options, and desserts. They cook each to a high quality so you don't need much else. The steaks are juicy and delicious, the chips are nice and crispy (not too greasy either). The salad is well-seasoned, the desserts are small but impactful. The drinks are a staple for a chain that has perfected the formula of quantity AND quality. You can easily head down for a nice meal at Maison de Boeuf, then walk straight to Gin and Juice for an after-meal drink. Pure bliss. Thank you!

Nice place with delicious food but I like the old one in Cardiff bay more due to the location. But it's worthwhile getting food in this restaurant.

I recently visited the Welsh House for an afternoon tea, and it was a disappointing experience. Despite it not being busy and having booked in advance we waited 40 minutes for our food to arrive, and we were served tea 20 minutes before anything else. The sandwiches were dry with minimal filling, and the cheese and leek scones were turned upside down to hide the burnt sides. We expected rissoles as they were on the menu, but received cheese bites instead. The Welshcakes tasted pre-packaged, lacking any freshness. The only highlight was the brownie, which was nice. Overall, not worth the hype or the wait.

Great atmosphere and great wine selection, fondue itself was lovely but let down by the bread. We'll definitely be going again, but a baked French bread or something a little nicer than what appears to be chopped up Hovis would make this 5*
