Lovely place to stay!! Clean, comfortable, tidy. Very welcoming. Had a full English breakfast, was beautiful!! Presentation was on point! Will definitely be back!! Highly recommend!!

Room is small but clean. Service is excellent.

Pub was empty when we arrived so was worried it might not be the best, however we ordered our food anyway and it was fantastic, the food was really well cooked and tasted great, excellent value for money will be going again when next in York.

Fantastic stay, extremely pleasant staff and a great atmosphere. Room was lovely and being able to eat at the bar made this an all in one stay. This food was great, with a good choice for both breakfasts and other meal. This will be our 'Go to' venue for staying in York from now on.

Nice little pub, can't comment on the rooms or food services (except for tasty cake) but pleasant to sit around the back and get away from the busy city. Beer garden overlooks the Foss / the historic coaching inn that the pub is set in. Would recommend for a summer's day.

I loved this place and will definitely be returning. Slap bang in the middle of York. Private parking behind a locked gate. Twin room on ground floor, comfy beds, TV, tea/coffee, Wi Fi. Bathroom spotless. Lovely little pub serves nice food. Didn’t have time to try the grill restaurant or hookah bar. The riverside beer garden to relax with a pint in sun - quiet and private. Staff were fabulous. A very chilled out, welcoming atmosphere. Pub and rooms dog friendly. Next time we come we hope to meet Cookie!

Unfortunately they didn't give us new teabags or empty the bin The furniture had a very weird placement Found a slug on the floor in the bathroom They could do much better because the location is great

This is a really ugly and dirty place, smells really bad and doesn’t look good from outside, is open to a pub or something, even looks dangerous to me. I had to look for another hotel because we really didn’t like, I would ask my money back. The people who work the were very nice, but when you reserve an accommodation they don’t show you how it really looks. Smells really bad and doesn’t look comfortable at all, I am paying the same money per night in a 1000% better place in front of the river in York.

Abandon all hope, you who enter. The shower is moldy. An unpleasant smell in the room and that noise from the street below that enters your room. Would I sleep here again? No thank you.

I'd passed this place for years without going in. It just didn't look like it would be much good. Whilst I knew it had riverside tables out the back, I also knew that the river was the Foss which is not a pretty river - often litter and algae strewn and the buildings framing it aren't the most attractive either. But I'd noticed that it does its own menu, independent from the large pub operators or caterers, and was advertising an authentic charcoal grill. So the sun was out...and why not... The Foss was still the Foss, but squint and you've got waterside views, and whilst there is a ramshackle quality to the outdoors, it was still nice to be sat in the sun. As for indoors, it's fine, not as bad as I thought it looked from the outside. On to the food - I thought I should order from the grill given they were selling that as their point of difference, so took the grilled chicken breast in a creamy mushroom and garlic sauce. Genuinely - I enjoyed it. Much more so than your average pub meal. Chicken well cooked, grill flavours coming through, a punchy and flavoursome sauce, and nicely prepared and dressed fresh side salad. There's some pretty average/poor reviews of this place. Partly this may have been previous owners, and partly it may be contaminated by hotel reviews as they have rooms apparently. But I'm glad I tried it, and I'll probably come back.

Interesting old pub fast service and good menu fair prices

Stayed for a night in family room really nice room was clean and comfortable and also staff was approachable and polite.

A friend & I stayed here for a weekend,..excellent location,friendly & efficient staff. Room was clean,but would benefit from a lick of paint & a bit of updating. Will definitely recommend to people & would go back again😊.

We recently had a few days in York and ate at the Watergate Inn on Walmgate. We ordered the fish, chips and mushy peas. It came with side salad (no mushy peas). The guy serving behind the bar was coughing everywhere, which put me off to start with. When the food came it was barely warm. I was going to complain but my husband was tucking into his. We should of said something, it could of made us ill. We paid over £36 with a cider and a pint of shandy. We left most of it and made a quick exit. Avoid this place

The rooms really aren't up to much but our bed was comfy. The bathroom definitely needs a good face lift and hot water would be nice. No electricity in the morning either. In the centre of York and cheaper than other hotels so I suppose you get what you pay for. The staff were brilliant and the bar and pizza restaurant is nice

Even though the room was cozy and had everything needed, the walls were too thin and I could hear the noise from the other rooms and outside during the entire night. Good location but if your goal is to rest, this wouldn’t be my first choice.

I went for lunch. The lady at the bar was really welcoming and friendly. I had a disabled child with me and they accommodated his needs with such easy and couldn't do enough for us. Food is well priced and excellent value for money. Will be going again next time in York

Stayed a weekend with 3 friends in a family room. Very handy for main sites of York. Room dated but clean. Beds, some comfy others need new mattresses!!.

Nice little pub the food and beer was excellent and the service was excellent not stayed in one of the rooms yet

I have stayed here many times over the years, but this is the 1st time in a long while. The new owners are very welcoming and couldn't do enough for us, including making a big fuss of the dogs. Rooms are great for a stay in the centre of York and free parking a massive bonus. They are in the process of upgrading some of the rooms, so any issues were dealt with quickly and they welcome any feedback. Tucked away in a quiet part of the city centre with a nice chilled vibe, whilst still being only a 10 min walk to all the shops etc. The burgers and breakfast are really tasty and really well presented. The whole menu was lovely with plenty to choose from. I hope they do well in their new venture, we will definitely be back 5/5.

Stay well away. Mould damp and plenty of migrants. Airlocks in the pipes so loud sounds when flushing the toilet. Food is awful the noise at night is absolutely out of order. Flat pillows hard bed. Take a shower it won't drain it's like paddling in the river Ouse. No hot water from the sink as the tap does not work. Don't waste your money and get a better sleep somewhere better.

I can't comment on the pub, food or hospitality side however my experience with the accommodation was laughably bad. The pictures and videos speak for themselves however allow me to elaborate on what you're seeing. Mold and stains in the bathroom, on the walls and the floor carpet in the rooms, the odour was intolerable and there was near to no storage or comfortable furniture, the beds smelt....weird... there was a pallet being used as a step as the entrance to the room was as pictured below, totally unprofessional. Should you require going to the reception simply follow the door pointing to the toilets which smelt strongly of urine from the outside. I really wouldn't recommend staying here from my experience and beware that the policy of the Watergate Inn is no refunds without a 48 hour notice. I only wished I'd noticed a review such as this which accurately supplied a reliable and valid insight to the conditions available.

Expensive for the type of place it was. Mattresses were very thin and the room needed a good tidy up. Extension leads were used to plug in electrical items. Outside was scruffy with cigarette buts and old Mattresses leaning against the wall. Quite noisy too. Staff were drinking and smoking outside until around 4am. Very convenient location wise as right in the centre.

Great place if your visiting York right in the middle of York. Free car parking . Rooms nothing special but everything you need for a comfy sleep . Very secure . Food was excellent . Dog friendly definitely will be returning.

A quick visit to this pub revealed that this has a beer garden on bank of River Foss. Would assume to be very busy when sun shines unlike the dreary drab day I visit.

Absolutely excellent service and food, we just called in today after seeing a specials board beef or chicken burger and chipy £5! I have a diet issue and the guy called Karo was extended helpful and did everything to perfection. Hubby had the beef burger which looked delicious and he said it was very tasty. I had the chicken burger and chips which was a piece of chicken breast and it was also delicious. We will definitely be going back as the service was exceptional. Karin was serving the drinks and was a really lovely chatty young lady.

Very nice staying in this hotel last weekend, the room was cosy and the staff super nice. Breakfast was also really good, plus location and everything I will definitely be going back here!

Fantastic little place for food.

I have stayed here and enjoyed meals here too, infact only yesterday I was visiting york again with my daughter and we had lunch there. Girl behind the bar is lovely. Food excellent! I would definitely recommend and all those people passing and looking in, please go in have a drink and try the food!!

We stayed for 3 nights and ate at the pub on our first night. The room (14) was big enough for our family of 3, it was warm and comfortable and there was a TV for my toddler to stay distracted. The shower was strong, towels and soaps were provided. The food menu was alright, but the Beef Burger was fantastic, chips were seasoned nicely and the Chicken Burger was the real winner, my wife loved it. Thank you for a great stay

Stayed in one of the rooms, was lovely and warm, easy to get to the centre of York and very convenient! Could do with a bit of an update in the room but was clean and comfortable

It was nice cosy room, we had three heaters in the room that works perfectly well to keep the room warm in cold weather -4C , room had LG smart TV, kettle , toiletries, towels , carpeted. It also had tea and milks available, it had iron and hair dryer, there was some issue with the noise when someone Walking/climbing stairs , host was nice guy and helpful , reception generally covered 24/7 and we were provided main gate and door codes for late check-in

We held our daughters first birthday party in the Watergate's private room area just to the back of the main pub. It was all absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Monica the manager was a great help in organising the party & was on hand all day to make sure everything went to plan. All our guests loved the venue & all the staff were extremely helpful. We had pizzas as well for our party, everything was great & all our guests left happy. Will 100% be using the Watergate for our group get togethers & parties in the future. Thank you to Monica & all the team for making our daughters first birthday a great day!

Stayed there 2 nights, pub was shut, no staff, key box access number changed, Wi-fi password changed, shower cold. Worst of the worst.

Quiet but friendly visit. Always good in the summer outside

Nice looking pub inside with a good ambience, at first service was ok from our female host, but it went downhill after that when ordering food. After waiting 45 mins for our meal, we decided to ask where it was, they said they were busy and would be out soon, but nobody else around us were eating and we didn't see any othere meals come out. Then the 2 ladies sitting at the next table had their food brought out, they'd been waiting longer than us, after 55 mins our meal arrived, when the guy finally found our table, even though he had been told twice where we were sitting, we had to shout him, then i asked for cutlery, he said i will be straight back with some, but then proceeded to go straight behind the bar to serve drinks, so we had to walk to the other side of the pub to get our own. Food ok, chips a bit soggy, service absolutely terrible by the two young gentlemen, they seemed more interested in running the bar, the female host was excellent, she was running about trying to do everything, the place was let down by the men.

The host/barman was very pleasant and helpful. He ordered a taxi for someone, took deliveries and made sure that everyone was welcome

Lovely place we found on our way back to the hotel. Barman was polite and helpful, but not intrusive. Food was delicious and drinks reasonably priced.

I loved it here. I found it peaceful, and we had everything we needed for a comfortable, relaxing stay. Parking was brilliant, which has been problematic before at other places we've stayed in York. Riverside seating area, which will be great in better weather. The Shepherds huts look great! An old, quirky building with plenty of character. We didn't eat here this visit, but we shall definitely be returning. Staff were very approachable and welcoming at every point of contact. Our bed was comfortable and all soft furnishings were of good quality. The shower was great and the pamper treats were of good quality and welcome. There were plenty of resources to make beverages. Overall, it's not five stars, but a great place to stay. A little gem in the centre of York within a heartbeat of the central attractions . We shall be returning soon!

My sister and I stayed at this inn alone while travelling in York. The room was small, but exactly what we needed, and the price for it was decent as well. We felt safe being in the inn at night, and the staff were all welcoming towards us. The inn is on the main road that heads towards York Minster so walking to any location in the city centre is reasonable, but there is a bus station across the street as well!

Stayed in the hotel here. It was clean very warm and very reasonably priced. Staff were freindly and it's in a great location in the city. The rooms was in a peaceful courtyard behind the pub itself alough I do belive they have rooms above the pub too. They operate a lock box system to obtain access to the room which is very easy and full clear instructions were sent before hand. I would happily stay again. We didn't manage to eat here but the menu did look good.

Ideally located for shops & Market would definitely stay here again but if you are looking for 5 star this is not for you as bedroom was small & although it was adequate not the cleanest but for wot we required it was fine so for cheap & cheerful this place I would recommend

What a hidden gem !! This lovely hotel has private parking I'm the centre of York ! The rooms are a good size and easily accessible from the carpark. Our room was on ground level which was ideal as my husband is disabled. We were at the shambles market in five minutes which again is perfect for someone who can't walk very far. The staff are super friendly and helpful. There is a lovely bar and restaurant attached to the hotel but it's not noisy at all. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Booked a room for 1 night. Won't be going back. Mould on the ceiling in bathroom. Dirty vent on wall. Shower was broken and laid on soap tray. To shower, I had to trap the head against the wall. Should have been fixed. Never went in the bar so no idea on food.

Really well situated in the centre, 5 min walk to the shambles etc. No frills room but that's all we need. On suite, kettle, TV. All good

For the price we paid we were very happy. Very nice, helpful and obliging staff, the room was small but cosy, and the beds were comfy. Very close to the main attractions of York: shambles 3 minutes walk and York Minster 10. Excellent parking off the street and right next to our room. Will stay again when in York.

Cozy pub with friendly atmosphere - at least on a Sunday afternoon.

Perfect location, fantastic service. Nothing was any trouble at all. The food in the restaurant was amazing too. I 100% recommend here for a wonderful stay.

We didn't stay at the Inn, just ate in the outside covered area late one evening. Very kick-back place! Very nice people have bought it. The grilled veggies with rice were fantastic -- heavenly (and substantial) for vegetatians!

Came here for breakfast. The food was really nice, and the staff were attentive and helpful. There wasn't a ton of choice for people with dietary restrictions (no milk alternative, not many veggie/vegan choices). This spot was a little quieter than lots of other places in the city, and I was impressed with the fast service and quality of food. It is definitely worth checking out if you want an escape from crowds and a nice relaxed atmosphere!

Food was quite greasy and the chicken was burnt.

Very reasonable priced property, room was clean and had little extras such as coffee and shower gel. I was able to sleep no worries, couldn't hear the shisha bar with the window closed. Very close to city centre, would recommend and would stay again.

We drank and ate here, but we didn't stay. Friendly staff, delicious gyros and chips, they show the football and have a good selection of beer. A high chair is available for small children.

The self check in is easy, the room small, clean and has a iron and TV and small shower. You can hear everything everyone around you does, the floors are extremely creaky and you can hear everyone's business. Especially their bowel movements and their snoring. There's also a shisha bar in the car park that doesn't shut until 1 am, so if you want somewhere to sleep before 1 am give this a miss.

Room small and comfy enough, but the lock on the door is held in by cardboard, the shower is full of black mould, and I'm writing this (on 4g, because the WiFi password we were given doesn't work) at 00:46 because the new shisha bar literally outside the bedroom window is playing music until 1am. We were meant to stay here 2 nights and have booked another hotel for tomorrow. Spend a little extra to get a decent place.

Pleasant rooms at a good price.

Start off, staff really friendly and nice. But the place! £160 for one night!!!! Asked for an iron as none in the room! Got given an ironing board no iron! Got told they had none and to boil the kettle and use that! My daughter turned the hair dryer on and it made a loud noise and started to make a burning smell! Looking at all the electronics in tne room (tv, hairdryer,lamp) none have bern pat tested or no sticker on! I went down and spoke to a lovely lady who give me another one....I explained about the iron and having none...she said we have 3 in the cupboard....bathroom toilet kept making a flushing noise even when it wasn't flushed! No offer of a refund or anything! £160 is far to pricey for what u get!

The most delicious meal we had!!! It's a bit if a different menu that will cater for everyone but we had the gyros and pizzas. By the time we left we ate everything but the pattern on the plate!!!! Very fresh and delicious food!!!

Staff pleasant, location good, room so so for the money, noise from a baby crying so sound proofing not in place. Might go again after making sure room allocated was better quality.

I really enjoyed staying here though it was not quite what I had expected. I had paid £180 for two nights for a "room with a private bathroom" which turned out to be a charming hut down by the waterside with a private shower about 50 yards away in the main pub building. Monika was super-friendly. Food from the Kurdish kitchen is delicious. Good value and interesting atmosphere.

OK cheap and cheerful evening meal.

Apart from carpark fee inclusive, everything else was awful. Wafer thin mattress that you could feel the springs to carpet not clean to poorly maintained shower.... so much more not right. The only saving grave for this place is that it's in Central York.

Was expecting a hotel room but was offered a small hut was clean and comfortable be great in the summer. Decking around it could be updated. Quiet was a bit pricey as no breakfast included

Stayed here for 1 night, great location, free parking, friendly service and very reasonably priced compared to other central york locations.

Wasn't expecting much as the staff were new , but really helpful and friendly they couldn't do enough for you .Ordered food which was very good and proper home cooked. Definitely would return.
