Very nice venue. Good quality food and drink. Dog friendly. I hate waste so when I was left with 1/2 a pot of tea I asked for another cup for a friend... to be told it's one per person. Bit tight if you ask me.

A pretty, unusual, dog-friendly café. Recommended for good quality coffee with decaf options. We returned a second time to treat our family to afternoon tea. There were three of us so we ordered one large pot of tea but when we asked for a third teacup we were told they wouldn't do it as they don't allow people to share pots of tea for two. Having paid over £30 for three scones and a pot of tea for two, and having recently come from another café where they brought over an extra cup and saucer without us even asking, there was a noticeable difference in the afternoon tea service compared to some other local places. On the plus side, the homemade scones were delicious and the pot of English Breakfast tea was so big we had more than two cups worth left over when we'd had our fill!

I've read some of the past negative reviews and all I can say is that this place is quite extraordinary - in particular because it's a cafe attached to gardens and not a high street venue. The food is staggeringly good - extremely high quality ingredients made with real care and attention to detail but without being fussy or complicated. As a long standing chef I appreciated everything that was on my plate (and my husbands too....) Thank you very much.

Ultimately you go to lunch to eat food and my food wasn't nice enough to finish (sorry Greenpeace). However, the waiting staff were great, I liked the concept of eating in a greenhouse. I also had a nice tea 🫡.

Lovely setting in an old vinery. It's a short walk from the car park with no car park immediately outside. (75-100m along a tarmacked path from the overflow car park in north Helmsley) A nicely varied and interesting menu, very definitely not standard fare. The menu is focused around salads but not in a vegetarian way, there are many meaty or fish options. The food itself was magnificently fresh, the bread in my open sandwich was lovely, my guests Buddha bowls were filling and the flat bread was gorgeous. Coffee was excellent. But be aware that you have to order at the window and collect your drinks yourself. But your food is brought to your table. Cakes looked delicious but we didn't have time to try them. Allow £20 per person for lunch and coffee. Toilets were clean and tidy.

Edit to review: changing my review from a 3/5 star to a 1/5 star due to the owners sarcastic response to my review below. Apparently customers aren’t allowed to have their own opinions and taste now. Thanks for your ‘I’m right you’re wrong’ reply below - hilarious! My previous review: I’m giving this a 3/5 because the service and atmosphere was perfect, however the food wasn’t great. I ordered the Korean chicken Buddha bowl, and the flavours were very strong and confusing. Really sticky sauce that covered the chicken was extremely sugary and tasted similar to hoisin sauce. On top of the plethora of ingredients including dill, cheese, chickpeas, quinoa, coriander, tomatoes, cucumber and more!! Whilst it’s definitely a 5/5 for effort, less is more in this case. Whilst I appreciate I chose the Korean chicken Buddha bowl, I don’t think the menu should have options for the Buddha bowl that don’t go with the recipe. Portion sizes were great though! My partner had the mackerel sandwich which was again overpowering: dill and mayonnaise on top of mackerel and beetroot.

I've just read CW's review, and im disappointed with the owners reply.Hence, i thought I'd leave one as we've been going here for years.and live in Leeds. We have also called and been surprised to find it closed in the past. It's my wife's favourite cafe. I like it too, but I find it expensive and can sympathise with the comments regarding the staffs unfriendly manner at times behind the counter. However, the cafe is still worth visiting in a beautiful location. The food is good, and the coffee is the best. So I bite the bullet and pay the little extra as a treat for my beautiful wife.

I visited Helmsley yesterday with family to specifically visit the walled garden cafe for lunch. As my journey was 1hr 30mins I checked their opening hours before setting off (their website and Google stated they were open), I also checked their socials to check they weren’t shut like they have in the past - to my surprise when I arrived, it was closed!! The signs advertising them being open today were also all out across Helmsley. Very disappointing and frustrating, especially as I paid to travel and paid for parking. Our family were also disappointed. Too bad they missed out on a large table. I’d recommend Mannions instead as they're more reliable, especially since this is not my first experience of them being closed when they’ve advertised they’re open! ** Originally posted in January but updated my profile 3 days ago which has changed the date on this review. I don’t appreciate the cafe replying several months later saying this is a false review, when it is not!!

Been here a few times for lunch and today for coffee and cake. Previously the lunches have been good and we’ve sat outside. Today we had 2 coffees and 2 scones which were £18!! Overpriced and not even great scones. Service as unfriendly as usual at the counter (serving staff outside have previously been great) and tables not cleared. Suspect it’s playing on its location which is lovely for outdoor seating but otherwise I wouldn’t recommend it.

After spending time round the garden, we had a great lunch at the cafe. It was very busy due to the lovely weather but we were not waiting long. We both had an open sandwich and they were very tasty. My fresh mint infusion was delicious as was the elderflower drink. Resisted temptation as the baked goods looked delicious.

We visited on a very rainy day having walked from our holiday rental in Helmsley..15-20 min...sought refuge with dripping coats soaked through and with dog...they coped well with us! Was lots of exciting things on the menu but we opted for sharing a tasty pork and leek sausage and slightly 'lighter' cakes...lemon cakes and me a treacle tart. Everyone happy. Mocha coffee was excellent too. Quirky and rustic atmosphere.

This place needs some sort of award. It's a glorious place to eat, with great food and fantastic service. It was v busy when we went and there was a notice advising of staff shortages, asking customers to help out a little if they could by clearing their tables. This didn't put us off as the setting and general atmosphere were so welcoming. Good customer service is about managing customers' experiences, so this was a good move by them. As it turns out the service was excellent and better than most other places we've been to, which is a credit to the hard-working staff there. The buddha bowls and gin cocktails were just sublime. We've been here a few times in the past and it never disappoints! Easy 5 stars.

Gorgeous Food & Setting Positioned next to the walled garden in the North Yorkshire village of Helmsley is the popular Vinehouse Cafe. As the name suggests it is situated in an old lean-to greenhouse. The greenhouse gets very hot on warn days but there is amble seating outside with parasols to shade diners. The seats look out towards the tranquil walked garden. The food is delicious. We had a Buddha bowl, a large mixed salad with choice of toppings, and the frittata of the day, also served with a large selection of different salads. Service was quick, efficient with polite staff.

Today, such a simple meal of bloomer ham and cheese toastie with salad was an astounding taste experience! The small, special salads were a savoury delight. Mollie explained how she made them and although they weren’t unusual ingredients, it was the combination that did it for me. Also, the way the really efficient and pleasant young staff looked after us was the perfect start to our visit to Helmsley walled garden

"you enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" said the bar room sign which greeted this weary wanderer who'd taken a wrong turn. I ordered a pint and sure enough before it was pulled I was in conversation with a local man who thenintroduced me to the bar staff! The Sunday Roast was in full swing, the campers were in and out from the pub campsite and the occasional labrador was stealing hearts but nothing seemed to much trouble for the staff. This is a proper country pub, as warm and cosy as a storybook cottage and it's charm appeared to be working on a nearby American couple who's fantasies of an Olde English Country Pub had all just come true. I was on foot and was a few miles from the nearest town but lo and behold one of my new-found companions insisted on giving me a lift... As I exited the bar I glanced the "enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" sign again - this pub does what it says on the tin!
