Food and service was great. My partner and I had the classic burger and the Disco burger, both amazing, so tasty! Also defo recommend the mac n cheese croquettes. Service was amazing, super attentive. I’m currently on crutches and the staff at The Vine made sure I was helped through doors and always checked in on our table so I didn’t have to worry about getting up for anything. Lovely environment, quick service, great staff. Highly recommend

Horribly expensive for a country pub, should have known better when the name changed and they called themselves a Bistro. Anyway, £9.50 for a small (125ml) glass of Merlot is way over the top. £5 for a non-premium beer, (£3.80 elsewhere locally). The burgers, nice though they were from £10.50 and up, with chips £4.95! Made for an expensive evening!! Still, they were busy, so cashing in..

It maybe because it’s bank holiday weekend and very busy, but it was disappointing tonight. Food was slow to come and everything was just OK but not great. In the spirit of being balanced I have been there before and the food was tasty, so tonight could have been an off night. Nothing bad, just not living up to its reputation.

Booked a table in advance for a birthday meal. When we arrived pub was very busy, waited by the bar for our table. Staff ignored us for a while, then manager / owner asked why we were staring at him! Explained I had a reservation, he quizzed me about my booking and then just wandered off… back to serving behind the bar. Another member of staff then found our booking but said we would have a table once one became available (so no actual reservation!) Will not be returning, obviously so busy they don’t need new customers!?

We visited tonight for a friends birthday. Firstly we were seated by the basement which actually smelled like being in the slums of victorian London. It was stomach churning. I had previously phoned in advance to check I could still have the vegan burger which I had had previously in Cavendish and the answer was yes, I was given the bean burger which was vile and I didn't touch but was still charged for it. If your a meat eater this place is ok but pricey. The girls who served us were lovely but sadly we wont be back

To be honest, a burger wouldn't be in my top ten choices when going out for a meal, but The Vine was recommended to us as being exceptionally good for burgers and so we decided to give it a try. My attitude towards burgers has been changed forever, although from this point onwards, for all other burgers the bar has been set very high. Keen to get a full experience, my other half and I ordered different burgers and then cut each one in half and shared - so we tried the 'Cat Sued the Chicken' burger and the 'Lambo' burger. There are no fried automatically included with the burgers and, having now tasted them, I think this is a good menu decision as, really, fries just detract from the main event. We did order a bowl of mac'n'cheese croquettes to share, which were delicious and just enough. The burgers are loaded with accompaniments and great care has been taken to match them with the best bun (I did overhear the server offering to provide a gluten free bun for one customer). The meat itself was juicy and tasty and the whole thing was just a wonderful experience, quite a challenge to fit the whole thing in one's mouth for a good bite but well worth the effort. The environment itself is cosy and welcoming, a log fire, a variety of seating and lots of interesting art on the walls, reflected in the taste of music playing in the background. There seemed to be far more rooms that the first one we entered, so I imagine the place can get busy and buzzing. Would thoroughly recommend.

Had lunch with my wife and dog Alfie. The pub is welcoming and the staff are very efficient. I had a burger, my wife the chicken wings and we shared a portion of hand cut fries. All cooked very well and tasty. There’s a range of draught beers on offer and the local IPA I had was very good. Very good decor with contemporary artwork to my taste.

I’ve been to this pub a few times although sadly haven’t been for a couple of months. My husband and I went today to try the Sunday roast in a Yorkshire pudding wrap and we weren’t disappointed. Lovely beef brisket, perfectly cooked veg, a bowl of cauliflower cheese and dipping bowls of horse radish and gravy. My only criticism would be the gravy could be thicker but I realise gravy is subjective! I love the rock vibe here from the decor to the music (tame impala, the cure, panic at the disco), it’s lovely and cosy with an open fire and the clientele seem friendly and a good mix of locals and people who have come for the food. The imaginative burgers here are amazing too and they cater well for vegetarians.

New owners have turned this pub around . Food was excellent. However, management/ staff allowing customers to openly vape inside the pub isn’t a great look . Even staff at the end of the evening surreptitiously vaping ( but not very discreet) seriously unprofessional which is a shame as otherwise they were great.

I've had burgers all over the world, and the Vines' burgers are amongst the best I've ever had. Great variety and very well cooked and presented. We went with a large family group of around 12, so the order was quite varied, but everyone really enjoyed their food, and for the quality and taste, they are amazing value. One thing you must try in the sweetcorn siracha ribs and the peanut slaw. The staff a great and really friendly and there’s also a great selection of beers available. We'll definitely be coming back.

Last weekend my wife’s family held a gathering of sorts at the Mulberry Tree in Braintree. The food was possibly the worst I’ve eaten and was as far from being reasonably priced as it could be. All the little locals are now owned by chains and we pay our hard earned for frozen nuggets and chips sat with groupon vouchered benefit family’s glued to their phones whilst their half bred kids run riot and then there’s the staff of whom we are an inconvenience to. So when my sister in law and her boyfriend of whose family supply most of the genuine restaurants in the Essex and Suffolk areas with their meat instead of brake bros, they happened to mention the Vine in Great Bardfield. With my 10 year old son racing locally and friends attending to spectate we soon got talking about lunch? We happened to mention the Vine and once the track action finished we were quickly making our way to sunny Great Bardfield. The Vine looks like a traditional pub from the front and has parking accessed via the side entrance. There was a large garden with tables and play area for the kids to play. The restaurant itself is small with a quirky feel and the staff not only very welcoming but they can talk by opening and closing their mouths. There is no pre booking (according to the website) and we arrived unannounced as a group of 7 and got seated right away. The menus were clean and the food has different names so you can read it and not opt for the usual default setting so many of us so often do. We opted for Disco Brisket and The classic burgers, fries on the side with additional onion rings, mozzarella bites and a double portion of chicken wings. The kids had burgers too and this is where things for me set the standard as my youngest of whom is on occasions fussy with his food ate the whole thing before insisting it was the best burger he had eaten. I have to agree as do our friends. The portions were large enough to request a box for the chicken wings to take home, of which when asked the staff were obliging. We had an extremely nice meal with drinks and the bill was a little over £100. The Vine not only exceeded my expectations but has set the bar for other restaurants to catch up or end up as yet another curry house. Cannot wait to return for what will be an adult only evening and my only negative comment was not trying the desserts. The nearest ice cream to us is a drive to Thurrock or to Snugburys in Cheshire so a milk shake or rare flavoured ice cream would be 10/10

I can not rate this pub highly enough. Food service and ambience are all excellent. They hosted my son's 11th birthday party last weekend. Fifteen boys could have been a challenge but The Vine performed fantastically. Their food was prompt, delicious and sensibly priced. We have eaten at The Vine on numerous occasions and have never been let down by the food. (Okay maybe once when they took the cheese & Mac croquettes of the menu but they are back!!) There are lots of choices on the menu, it's not just your standard beef or chicken burger. The weekly special is always something interesting. The staff are welcoming and friendly and it's a firm favourite with our 2 daughters. It's generally very busy and you may have to wait for a table (which speaks for its popularity and good food) Overall a good choice for a relaxed meal in the area

We visited for Sunday lunch and what a gorgeous roast it was. In our party we had beef, which was melt in your mouth, and lamb which was also extremely tender. There were plenty of roast potatoes but the only complaint was it was lacking in other vegetables. Yorkshire was to die for. All starters were delicious and generous portions. Desserts were also delicious with portions that were perfect for finishing off a generous meal. The staff were attentive and friendly. Definitely a place to visit.

We have been to The Vine several times before and took some friends for lunch today. All of our choices didn't disappoint. I'm always pleased when an order takes a little while to arrive and yes, we could tell it was freshly cooked. The atmosphere is always so warm and friendly, the log fire was roaring and most of the tables in the front room were taken with a nice buzz of conversation. We had a chat with the lady who served us and then the Chef joined us. They both take a pride in their work, village and pub and the Chef really is proud of the standards they achieve. We are all aware of the difficulties for everyone at the momnet, but please do try The Vine either for dinner or lunch as really you'll not be disappointed. Its also worth leaving a little time to explore the village and if you like walking .... or strolling, there are some beautiful footpaths and views to take in before you arrive at the pub.Thank you and we will be back. In fact, we've just moved to the area and you'll be our place to bring our visitors.

Having visited The Vine for their Pork and Cider Taster Evening we looked forward to their next evening of Asian Tastes (Oct 22). We were surprised on arrival that tables were bare except for the NHS QR poster on the surface. Covid-19 protocol was in place and strictly adhered to we were pleased to see. On previous visits cutlery etc was laid out. No menu, this time, to give us an idea of delights that were in store for us. Due to cancellations, because of Government rulings, numbers were at a low. In fact, as the evening progressed, we noted that there were only we two and one other couple sampling the food. I felt that cancellation of the event would have been more appropriate. We had a couple of drinks and awaited the unknown courses. How many???? The first course was obviously Japanese. A wonderful array of Sushi and Tempura. Delicious but not prepared in the kitchen of The Vine. Course two was a chicken dish with rice and various compliments. A Tikka flavour, so maybe Indian, but extremely dry. No moisture whatsoever and difficult to swallow. Once again, no description, so I have assumed Indian. Then a wonderful beef dish, cooked to perfection with a tangy green covering with deep fried noodles. Malay, Philippine ??? Don't know, baffled. The final course was a dish of two sorbets with summer fruit. Very Eastern from Great Bardfield, probably Clacton-on-sea.In comparison to the Pork evening, last night was a disappointment. At the end of the Pork evening the chef came out of the kitchen and chatted to the tables. Last night he didn't show his face and, in fact, the owners were nowhere to be seen when we asked for the bill. Only the brave Natalie, a wonderful cheerful young lady, seemed to be on duty.Unusually, for me, I give this visit two stars. I am sure once the virus problems are dealt with and protocol is relaxed all pub/restaurants will be on the up again.

A while back we visited The Vine for their taster nights and were extremely impressed. So we looked forward to return to see what changes the new owners had made and what delights the new chef delivered from the kitchen. We arrived to the normal Vine warm welcome. Staff have always been brilliant. I was pleased to see that not a lot had changed, interior wise, except in minor ways but those changes worked. This night was a ‘pork and cider’ taster night. The pork coming from a local farm, Prior Hall. I love seeing local companies being used. Also, good advertising and hopefully, reciprocated.6 courses with matching ciders. The idea was brilliant but……would it work.It certainly did in all aspects. Various cuts of pork served in different ways starting with a Spanish style tapas, fingers to be used, on to Posh Sausage roll, delicious. Through to upper class ‘burger’. Then fillet of pork with belly, pureed pommes, root veg and whole grain mustard. All extremely delicious but the fifth course was my favourite, Asian style loin with teriyaki stir fry vegetables. My mouth is still watering. Finalising with champagne sorbet to calm down those overworked taste buds. All courses were of a size that six courses wouldn’t be wasted.Ciders were ‘interesting’ varying from the type of cider that most people know to, later in the courses, dessert ciders. Toffee flavoured and a mixed berry variety. It would have been useful for those ciders to be mentioned on the menu (not a criticism, just a note).I now look forward to next month with their Asian taster evening.A fantastic evening. Wonderful professional, but friendly, service. Good to see that The Vine hasn’t been changed too much. Great chef and wonderful staff.Roll on next month.

We attended a taster menu evening based on pork from the local farm. Each course was served with a different cider. A great idea, and so well executed. This chef has a touch of magic in him. For me the standout dishes were the “posh” sausage roll which was like Greggs had gone Heston ! I’d buy this as a starter on any menu. The really drop dead gorgeous dish was a pork belly, pork fillet dish with veg, mash and gravy - but done as a small platter. Flavour zinged out of every mouthful, doing the delicious local pork all the favours it deserved. If I had been served this in a Michelin starred restaurant I would not have been disappointed. I’m so pleased that Great Bardfield has a innovative and passionate chef.

......based on recent reviews on Tripadvisor and Facebook. It was the first time since lockdown that we went out for dinner as a family, so it did feel like quite an occasion. The food looked amazing on the photos etc., but unfortunately our food didn't look anything like those in the photos. They were super busy, which was really nice to see, and we really did want to support our local establishments, but I don't think we will rush back.We had the burgers, there was no side salad, no salad in the burger. The burger bun and the actual burger was very dry. You could count the number of chips, which always looks worse on a large plate, and the burger sauce was served in a paper pot. My daughter's pasta was under done, even I manage to get that right!I know they would have preferred it if I mentioned it at the time, but they were so busy, and clearly trying their best, but the food really did fall below average. A year ago I reviewed The Vine following the arrival of the new owners. The food and service were awful and I said so. The Vine has now reopened following the Corona virus lockdown and they have hired a chef. It's a transformation. The food is fresh and vibrant, service was fast and friendly. I had an Asian inspired belly pork starter that was fall apart tender and zinging with fresh flavours. This was followed by Skate served with a salad and chips. The Skate was fresh and perfectly cooked, the juicy white flesh lifted softly from the bone. The chips were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - obviously homemade. The price was reasonable and the waitress delightful. I hope they can maintain this excellent standard - if so we will be regular visitors.

On Sunday 16th Feb our classic car club had lunch at this pub. We had visited before and had found it excellent. What a difference !! I can only assume new management. The service was poor at best, the menu seemed very limited, the soup starter being completely inedible and several people sent it back. Some people had chicken Thai Green Curry in different strengths, all of which tasted of cardboard !! The Roast dishes were ok but nothing special. The deserts were nothing but a joke. Very limited selection and of very poor quality, in fact we had the impression they were just clearing out their freezer. This pub used to be very busy but for Sunday Lunch there was only one other couple dining, I am not surprised given the quality of what was on offer. We will certainly never return to this pub. Stopped here for Sunday lunch. The internet showed this as a Gastro pub. It isn’t. On first appearance inside it’s tired and fatty and smelt strongly of bleach. unfortunately it didn’t get any better. The bar lady was friendly and helpful. She apologised for not having everything on the menu. What we should have done was leave there and then but being intrigued by the gastro pub status we stayed, convincing ourselves that the food would be worth it, to put it bluntly it wasn’t. It was just average Pub food consisting of over cooked vegetables, so soft that they disintegrated once in your mouth and with what could only be described as cooked meat. Nothing gastro about it but to be fair the portion size was hearty and there was plenty of gravy. It would be more honest if the Vine removed any reference to Gastro Pub

Plate was so rammed with juicy tender meat, fresh veg and fresh potatoes that I could just about manage it - delicious! As someone with 32 years of catering experience, I tend to be hyper-critical, but could not fault the service, food or ambience. Too many people leave ignorant comments because they are only used to fast 'food' served at the likes of MacDonalds, but this was REAL dining for those who appreciate great food, properly cooked. We visited the pub on a normal Saturday lunch time last Saturday. 5 of us met for lunch. Upon ordering we were told no white bait, cod (the fish order hadn't arrived) and the lasagne had only just gone in the oven, at gone 12.30!We order 5 meals including 2 pies. The staff described the pie and my brother asked a couple of questions as he was looking forward to a proper pie not just a puff pastry top. We waited. After about 25 mins the staff approached the table and told us there were no pies, and the sign we had noted on arrival was wrong and should have been taken down! We immediately swapped the 2 pies for 2 burgers. About 40 mins later our food arrived. There was a single acknowledgment of the delay during this second period of waiting. No explanation or apology was offered. The food was of an acceptable standard when it arrived, we eat, paid, and left. We will never return to this pub unless it is the last place on earth serving food, when we would be prepared to wait over an hour for food to arrive, as presumably the pub would actually be busy on such a day.

We last came to The Vine about a year ago and loved it so today we fancied a roast so we booked in with our three young children. When we ordered we were informed the chef had just got back off holiday and so there weren’t certain things on the menu.We picked two roasts and three children’s meals. After waiting over an hour we were given 2 pork pies and were informed there was a wait for food. We ordered more drinks and continued waiting.I could see a conversation with the waiter and another table and their roasts went back to the kitchen so I started getting worried and loosing a bit of heart in our previous experience.A further 20 mins and and table were served there food and their faces said it all. After another ten minutes our children’s meals arrived, immediately I could see that the food was completely overcooked. Gosh fingers and chips that were so dried out there was no fish or chips inside as they were so dry!! The chicken nugget coating was rock hard as again it was overcooked. This was simply not on. We waited 1.30 mins, ordered two lots of drinks and very little communication to why there was a delay to then receive inadequate food. My husband had had enough by this stage and went into the kitchen and told them are children would not be eating this and we would be leaving.Such a shame as we’d had such a lovely meal previously. I hope the pub gets back on top of it and hasn’t managed to frighten all the existing clientele away.

The Vine has new leaseholders following the departure of Steve and Tanya Mann. This was our first visit since the change. It was a Saturday night, the bar was empty, the food was below average pub grub and neither of the two new leaseholders even made an appearance.

Despite my early unease when I walked in I was very impressed once the food arrived. It’s a strange set up, the bar is next door and was full of Friday night drinkers and the restaurant is just the other side of the door. Because people were also drinking outside they were walking through the restaurant to get to the bar and use the toilets. Not ideal, and if I was to suggest anything it would be to find a way to divert drinkers from doing this as it’s not nice to see half cut locals staggering past your table with a pint. That aside, the service was very good and the food out of this world. I cannot find fault with either, we all had a lovely meal and I would definitely go back....just maybe not on a busy Friday night.

Fresh, fresh scallops cooked to perfection and mouth watering rib eye from local butcher preceeded the home made cheese cake to die for. We met the new owners who have great plans for the restaurant and pub. Top quality food but the taste - fantastic especially that home made cheese cake. See you soon.

I feel a need to write this review to raise awareness of the importance of eating establishments being fully aware and confident that the food they declare to be gluten or dairy free is correct. I came to lunch with a large group and the meal I was going to have, which had been marked up as gluten free, turned out not be. Then the curry I did opt for eventually was stingy on size and actually had an extra element I wasn’t expecting, a hair but being with a group I didn’t want to make a fuss. We waited an hour or more for dessert but that I could have put up with but now it is 4am in the morning and 1 hour ago I woke up with classic gluten stomach pains! After an average meal that would have gone unremarked on, I discover they have glutenated me! Establishments need to learn and understand that requesting the absence of these allergens is not necessarily a lifestyle choice but a genuine medical requirement. Now I face my alarm going off for work in less that two hours with little sleep thanks to stomach cramps!

Used The Vine as the base for our walk. 10 of us in the group. They opened early so we could pre-order food and use the loo. On our return, we had a table set aside and the quality of the food was excellent, without an excessive wait for service.

Positives; The staff and service were great, however my husband did have to get up once to get another drink but the staff were busy. The village is lovely, nice for a walk around. The vegetable selection that came with the roast was lovely, nicely cooked. I especially enjoyed the swede.Gin menu good, although grubby!

Delicious Sunday lunch thank you. Our son really enjoyed his GF vegetarian pie. My husband and I both had roast beef. Thick juicy slices of perfectly cooked meat and loads of vegetables.

The waitress was very friendly and attentive, it was a monday evening just after half term so the pub had a little less atmosphere than usual. That said we enjoyed our meal; the only down side was the pie was a little burnt and the vegetables a little bit too al dente.

Had Sunday Lunch here yesterday. Good parking area at the back. We were greeted with a smile, checked in and shown to our table for four. Lots of space around the table. We sat in the first room to the right (up a small step) off the rear car park; I could see through into another dining area and there is a bar to the front of the building.

Very good pub food - a little out of the way, but worth a visit. The dining area was a bit lacking in atmosphere - can easily be dominated by a noisy table. Good service and good food - with drinks / wine at sensible prices

Really enjoyable meal celebrating my husband's birthday. There were 2 other people dining that evening who also had a birthday, so the staff sang "happy birthday" 3 times. The food was lovely - not over-generous in size, but perfectly acceptable - and delicious and nicely presented. The scallops with pureed corn were amazing. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The only slight downside was that we had chosen a table in the corner, opposite the door - and oh my, how many people go in and out and DON'T SHUT THE DOOR! Perhaps a stronger door closer would be appreciated - but will definitely sit elsewhere next time. Overall, a really lovely meal and we will definitely be back.

Just on a ride out after Christmas and we fancied lunch. Came across The Vine which looked very inviting, so in we went. It had a small, but tidy front bar area which at the the time was reasonably busy. There is is also a rear bar which looked very nice with the tables all set ready for its customers. We were shown to our table and attended to quite quickly. The menu had a fair selection of which we chose the Cod and Chips. Drinks were also brought to the table along with a jug of iced water. When our meals arrived they were wrapped in a copy of old style newspaper on a plate of course, but a nice touch! It was piping hot and tasty. The prices too were very reasonable.

We had an extremely good lunch here yesterday. Great food, good choice of drinks and very nice staff in pleasant surroundings. The highlight for me was the ham, chicken and leek pie which had super buttery, crumbly pastry and a tasty filling. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will return again soon.

The Vine has never disappointed. We have always received a genuine, warm welcome here, along with a wonderful plate of very well prepared food. The menu offers some interesting choices as well as top quality pub classics served with fresh vegetables & 'proper' gravy. We enjoyed an excellent bottle of Austrian red from the extensive wine list. This is the perfect venue for a long lazy Sunday lunch.

Booked a table for two for my husbands birthday lunch. Arrived to a nice warm welcome with log fire and a really lovely lady who served us our meal. As it was a la carte, we expected small portions. However starters, main course and dessert were very substantial and beautifully presented. Even the tea and coffee were served in, what I call, a decent cup, not a thimble. Absolutely excellent, home cooked food and service. Would highly recommend this place. Will definitely go again. Well done The Vine.

Visiting the area we chose this venue from recent reviews and advertising. It is a gastro pub and from first impressions on entry offers something different. For a mid-week lunch it was not busy so sat in the front bar area with nice homely furnishings and comfortable seating (the main restaurant at the rear also looked comfortable and well spaced tables). Bar popular with locals providing atmosphere.Had pre-booked so immediate attention from on hand waitress and given drinks and menus. Straightforward menu choice including vegan and vegetarian options.

For the other reason I would recommend the Vine is, that I have to use crutches and always find that the vine is so helpful when It comes to finding the appropriate seating situation. Therefore the whole experience was really good Try Sunday lunch, you will never go anywhere else.

I will start this long and concise review by stating I've been in the hospitality industry. We came here pre booked as a table of 9, including 3 children at 3 pm on a Sunday. This was for my mother in laws birthday. Now the reason I say this time is because by now the kitchen had run out of several key components of their roasts and other main menu items such as beef and mashed potatoes. This considering the place was completely dead at this time. Why is the kind of chef that can not ensure they have ordered in and prepared these items that are vital components should wander down to McDonald's where someone with more experience will handle that for you whilst you're flipping burgers. Most of the remaining menu items are just thrust into the microwave or deep-fried without soul or care. Our starters took a full 50 minutes to be served, we had enquired earlier why it was taking so long as the kitchen had no other orders to prepare and was informed they were just being plated up. Still took another 20 minutes to produce these 5 starters! I'd chosen the salt and pepper squid that contained neither salt nor pepper! Bland would be an understatement. The rest of the meal was no less a long awaiting for poorly presented mess. It's clear the chef has no passion for food, and I'm certain wears a plaster on his microwave finger from overuse. The food was bland, overcooked, and under prepaired. The lamb Shank looked as if half the meat was missing, the hunters chicken was overcooked and dried out, and the beef bourguignon had no red wine, making it a tiny piece of beef stew. The list of disappointed meals went on. I can honestly say this is the single most disappointing meal I've had the misfortune of being served (eventually). I will not return and would recommend others avoid.

Covid safe and clean. Was a pleasant day so could sit on their outside patio area. Had a bacon sandwich, friends had cake. Bread was dry and I wish places would use proper butter, not some spread. Even with bacon you could still taste it... Service very friendly and pleasant.
