The Village Chip Bar in County Durham

It was our yearly pilgrimage to Frosterly 18 miles for fish and chips . Can honestly say they are the best around .

The staff are lovely, sadly the same can't be said about the fish and chips, the fish wasn't too bad as it was cooked fresh and a good size but the chips were lukewarm soggy and very greasy.

Excellent food and service certainly worth calling in for

Called in yesterday ordered fish bites, jumbo sausage and large chips wrapped what a joke when i looked at what i got for £10 5 very small fish bites and i mean small two tiny battered sausages even though i asked for one jumbo sausage and a handfull of chips, really disappointed one of the worst fish shops I've been to really stingy portion sizes definitely won't be back my advice avoid the place unless you desperate

My daughter went for 2 adults fish bites meals, 1 small chip butty and 2 sauces. She returned with a hand full of chips, a bun that was half buttered, and some fish bites without chips which were meant to be meals to feed a family of 4. The grease was dripping off the paper. I have tried to upload a photo so we shall see if they allow it. Not the first time my daughters called in and been totally ripped off. They try and wrap things together rather than in the meals so you arent actually getting the portions you pay for. We hadnt used this chippy for around 6 months for this reason and only used it as we came back from holiday yesterday and one of the children wasnt well and unable to be took grocery shopping.

Stopped by on my way through with my girlfriend and my son, my girlfriend went in while my son and I waited outside in the car (and kept dry lol). My girlfriend said the lass serving had quite a poor attitude when speaking to her and got a simple order confused, we ordered two portions of chips with a tub of curry sauce, and a kids meal of chips and chicken nuggets which also came with a small juice carton and a tiny lolly. In all it came to just over £16 which was very pricey, the two portions of chips must have been around £5 a piece, this is shocking frankly, we were both given a tiny portion of chips, we had to drive off when she got the food as it was raining and needed to find a spot to eat them, otherwise and if I'd known right away I'd have gone in to confront the staff. The portion of chips given were the smallest I have ever seen in a fish shop, I'd say in size it was comparable to between a medium - large fries serving from McDonald's? I know right... and for such a high price it is absolute robbery. Very poor will never go again, I seriously suggest avoiding and trying another nearby.

Fantastic place. The food is definitely worth the money, freshly cooked and prepared. The staff were amazing, felt so welcomed into the establishment. Nothing was a problem or an issue especially with a specific full order. Will definitely be returning.

travel nine miles for cod always perfectly fried as you wait( so always fresh) by the owner who is also friendly and good for a chat. Worth the money and journey will be back.

Very down rated fish and chip shop, expensive and very poor portions, staff need to interact with customers better and the owner needs to highlight properly what food he's selling, cheap Iceland onion rings instead of real onion in batter, even admitted he was being a bit lazy!!!

Excellent hand cut chips fried in dripping. Worth trying!

What a lovely chip shop. Locals getting their tea, so did we. Fine piece of cod. Chips lightly fried. Please I didn’t need to cook.

Placed a large order whilst staying in the village, food was excellent and piping hot. Batter crispy and light, fish was as good as we have had in Whitby. Tasty curry and mushy peas, portion size just right. Great friendly efficient service too.

We really enjoyed our fish and chips takeaway from the Village Chip Bar, it held its heat over a three mile trip home, the taste was excellent, not fatty, excellent fish. We can certainly recommend it and we will be returning. "Regular" a bit on the pricey side, but a small portion would be big enough for most folk.

Went here the other week. Fish was very thin and cold and small and chips where all ends. So not going to them again. Found a chippy in wolsingham totally different

I can honestly say that this was the worst fish and chips i have ever had. Greasy soggy chips , fish that was more batter than actual fish snd also full of fat. We was visiting the area so not knowing the restaurant/ takeaways i looked at reviews and saw this takeaway had got good reviews, i had to check afterwards to make sure i had gone to the correct place ....all the food was thrown straight in the bin..absolutely disgraceful and not cheap.

Great little chipy, was there last weekend went to truckfest in Wolsingham, called into this chipy not greasy crisp batter.

Great for motorbikes returning from the lakes along the A689 eastbound. About 50 yds there is suitable parking for bikes if not possible outside the chippy. £5 gets you a Smokey chips and 330 ml drink with change. Everything fresh. Nice staff.

the food is delicious and they will give you free scraps, the portions are fair, and the servers are always happy to help and polite. its good value for money and doesn't have an especially long wait.

Sausages could have been used as missiles. Chips were greasy and splodgy. Curry sauce was amazing though.

Used this chippy whilst holidaying in the area. The fish was overcooked and the batter was soaked in grease so stuck to the wrapper. The chips were dry and hollow like they had been stood for hours and reheated. The curry sauce and peas were really nice. Ended up throwing most of the food away.

had a fish supper last week whilst on holiday in Frosterley. Was really nice, didnt have Ny haddock but cod was lovely. Busy wee shop too.

After a long journey home and feeling hungry but too tired to cook we often stop at the chip shop in Frosterley. Portions are generous and we always share the chips. Fish bits are very good or you can choose medium cod. all the food we have received there has been very good and tasty.

We have been coming here for over 20 years, simply the best anywhere !! crisp golden batter, chunky fish, lovely chips and generous portions plus a lovely cup of tea from a really lovely staff.Never been disappointed even once in 20 years, we travel from Brandon just to get our F&C here and it is definitely worth the trek.

Get fish and chips here almost every week. Be prepared for a wait as everything is cooked fresh. They fry traditionally in beef dripping so vegetarians might need to think twice but the flavor is amazing. Oh and they do an amazing steak pies.

What lovely fish and chips. Not much more can be said, except well worth it!! (Only thing we thought they might be cooked in animal fat so if vegetarian would be worth asking.....)

De paso, pero ¡Qué hallazgo! Llamado en algo para el almuerzo y la tienda estaba lleno (siempre es una buena señal). La mayoría de las cosas en el menú son cocinados a la orden y tamaños para tus requisitos parte - no 'lo tomas o lo dejas". El abadejo filete era los tabiques pedazo de pescado que he probado en mucho tiempo - gran copos de pescado sabroso en una masa crujiente finas y las patatas fritas eran adecuados. patatas fritas chippy El personal era muy agradable, servicial, amable y orientado al cliente. Todos los miembros de la familia han comentado lo buena que era su comida. No cabe duda de que nos quedaremos en el pueblo de Bar Chip la próxima vez que pase.

Somos gente local y no comprar pescado y patatas fritas que a menudo, pero cuando lo hagamos, no iríamos a ningún sitio, pero a Frosterley Bar chip. El pescado siempre es una maravilla, muy fresco y las fichas de resultado cada vez. El bateador en el pescado es insuperable. Personal amable.Recomiendo una visita.
