I'm not vegan but the food here was so good even though I didn't consume anything of animal origin. Even milk or cheese are from plants. The Latte coffee I ordered, was with oat milk and the taste was very good. The Butter bean stew was delicious and I recommend you try it. For dessert I chose a slice of homemade cake that turned out to be awesome (also vegan). Everything we had tasted great. The prices seemed very reasonable to me. A clean place, nice atmosphere seasoned with well chosen music ... Polite and friendly staff. A pleasant experience. I recommend The Vegan Cafe.

Don’t let the title mislead you, I’m not going to get into the politics of being a vegan or not. I just like nice food, felt hungry and thought it would be nice to try the relatively new vegan café for lunch. It’s a clean little café that is obviously proud of the ethos it is operating by. The staff didn’t acknowledge arrivals (us or others) even though they weren’t too busy to do so. I’m aware that it is a small touch, but a quick friendly welcome is one of the little things that separates an OK atmosphere from a welcoming one. Normal café rules apply, chose a table, pick what you want from one of the on-wall menus and go to the till to order. Once speaking to them, the staff are lovely and happy to help. I had heard that the vegan cheeseburger (the “Sheese burger”) was the menu’s little gem, so my wife chose that, and I went for a veggie curry. Teas and coffee (each can be had with a choice of milks, such as coconut, almond or soy) arrived first and I’m happy to say it was a nice cup of coffee. Shortly followed by the food. The Sheese burger proved a good choice (price was £6.00), it was in a nice bun has a good relish and some crunchy slaw inside. Whether you are carnivorous or vegetarian you’ll find the meat substitute burger was quite tasty and the Sheese – the American cheese style slice – had a nice sticky texture. I didn’t see an option to add fries, potatoes or an extra side which doesn’t detract from the burger, but if you have a larger appetite (my wife is pregnant so just wants to consume calories) the bit of salad it comes with may leave you a little hungry. My veggie curry (priced £4.95) had a nice amount of chunky vegetables served around a small amount of rice. It was a pleasant flavour curry and the veg was cooked just right (not too soft or too raw). The curry sauce was more liquid than viscous (not a criticism, it worked with the curry) and I would have liked either a roll to mop up the sauce, or a slightly larger amount of rice. Neither of us are big portion eaters and I’m aware that the foods pricing is reasonable, so portion sizes aren’t a massive sticking point, but we were still a bit hungry and thought some dessert would be nice. At this point I visited the loo and am happy to report that it was clean, the soap was topped up and the hand dryer worked. Our pudding choices consisted of apple crumble & custard and a piece of chocolate cake. The apple crumble was quite pleasant and had a nice pastry. I would say that it was a shame that the crumble had been reheated in a microwave as it made the pastry a bit on the soggy side; still edible and enjoyable. The chocolate cake, however, was something of a let down in my opinion. I have had vegan chocolate cakes in the past and have found them to be enjoyable. In this instance however, the chocolate topping tasted a bit chemically as if it was just choco Angel Delight poured over the top and the base was dense and gelatinous – I didn’t finish the cake. Overall, I think the Vegan Café has made a good start and just needs to make a few tweaks to go from a nice café to a great café. The savoury food was well priced and very tasty, they just need to offer extra side options or slightly bigger portions. They need to work on their sweet offerings and when possible, give a slight acknowledgement to welcome customers. I would happily go back and next time I get a craving for a burger, might just pop in and get a Sheese burger! Realistically a 3.5 out of 5 is what I’d like to rate The Vegan Café, but as I can’t give half stars and as the tweaks are small, I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt and rate it 4 out of 5.

I visit Picnic Coffee every week for the delicious coffee and lemon drizzle cake. However, the staff just bring my order to the table and walk away without a word or a glance at me. Where are the staff other reviewers praise so highly?
