The Valiant Soldier in West Somerset

A great and varied menu offering a lot of choice all reasonably priced. The staff were friendly helpful and efficient. All four of us enjoyed our food. No reason not to return or recommend.

An excellent evening courtesy of the staff of the valiant soldier. A very extensive menu spoilt us for choice with so many tempting dishes to choose from. The waiting staff were friendly and efficient. And the bill very reasonable. No hesitation in recommending or returning.

Lovely! We went on a Thursday evening and the restaurant was well attended which is always a good sign. Friendly staff, super food (and lots of it) and the dog was welcome too. Definitely will go again.

First visit to this wonderful traditional pub set in the Exmoor countryside at Roadwater. A warm welcome at the bar and although we hadn't booked they found space for us to have Sunday Lunch. Roast Beef for me and Turkey for my wife... together with Roast Potatoes, carrots, swede, parsnips, cabbage, courgettes, cauliflower cheese, and a perfect gravy... what a mountain of delicious food, all cooked to perfection - and at a very competitive price. The two young lady servers were polite, friendly, and efficient and the Landlord made us feel very welcome too. After eating all we could manage we took our drinks outside into the sunny weather and sat beside the small river running beside the pub. A perfect afternoon at a perfect venue. We hope to return again soon.

What a fantastic pub........ my first visit having been recommended by one of the people in the village (Thank you, Chris). The publican, Michael, was an incredibly helpful chap - and made us welcome. How often does that happen? Clearly, the publican sets a high standard as literally everyone of his customers made were friendly. The bonus was the food - we ate like kings. Do I recommend this pub where the food was superb and the atmosphere was everything a pub should be? Absolutely - I shall return!

We went to the Valiant on a Tuesday evening and then again on the Friday evening. The first time we had 1 steak sizzler, 1 chicken sizzler, 1 beef curry and 1 steak and kidney pie-the portions were very good and i don't think I have ever seen so much beef in a curry anywhere i have had food The 2nd time we had the fish pie and and a chicken curry again both excellent. The Valiant as always is welcoming, serves great food and the staff are all brilliant thank you for making us so welcome

The Valiant Soldier is a lovely pub in Roadwater and the food was excellent in Quality and Quantity !! and Choice. The staff are very friendly and can't do enough for you. It is our second visit in 2 years and we thoroughly enjoyed the meals one of which was sunday luch for my wifes birthday . Well done to all the staff . Also they have a good selection of local ales on tap and many other wines and spirits etc. It is always a pleasure to eat there and prices and choice of food very reasonable !! We will be back ! This is a lovely country pub with an excellent menu and very friendly staff. Food arrived quickly and portions were very generous. Two of us had a fish platter, and my daughter had a steak sizzle platter, both of which were not run-of-the-mill pub stuff, and oh they were good. Puddings were also excellent - lemon meringue pie, apple and plum crumble and the most enormous cheeseboard you've ever seen! We felt welcomed and unrushed, and as if nothing was too much trouble - everyone at other tables seemed to be enjoying their evenings. Although we ate indoors there is a big outside seating area, and a play area for children. The car park is large (but mind the cats, please) and a fast-flowing river runs alongside it. I wish it were closer as I'd really like it to be my local, especially in Summer!

We had a great evening at this historic pub which is in a beautiful location with a vast garden. Masses of parking and the service of the landlord was absolutely perfect. We had a nice seabass fillet to eat which was not fancy but exactly what we wanted - and our bill was reasonable. Well worth a visit

Had a meal with my wife at the Valiant Soldier picked after looking at TripAdvisor and it was as good as its reviews stated, Good Food, Excellent Service not too Expensive would visit again if in the area

Supper in the pub as it was local to Croydon Hall Lodge where we are staying. Traditional pub with a great selection of ales. Menu was imaginative and specialized in local foods. The Hunter Chicken stack was great as it has a special maple bar-b-a sauce. My wife had fish which was cooked to perfection. Vegetable sides were fresh and crunchy. Deserts were a very nice finish. Prices are reasonable and the young lady who was our server was very helpful and pleasant. Will be back….

This pub was a great find. The menu was extensive and portions were large. The food was delicious. The service was fast and the staff were attentive and polite. Would definitely recommend. It's dog friendly too.

We have eaten here several times, but this time my meal was not good. I chose hake which should be delicious. Unfortunately it was so overcooked it was not at all enjoyable. The young waiter asked if everything was ok but when I said my fish was very overcooked he just said 'oh' and walked away. When we paid our bill, again we were asked if everything was ok and again I said my fish was overcooked. We did get a sort of apology but that was all. Previously the food here has been good, which is why we returned for another visit, but that was the last.

Had the pleasure of eating here in on another December holiday-we had eaten previously in September during our week then. As the snow lay all around us we drove out to Roadworthy and the Valient. The pub was warm on entry and there were a few groups already in the process of their evening meals. The atmosphere was as warm as the welcome and greatly appreciated. We had a sizzling steak and a steak pie with proper shortcrust pastry-both served with relivent chips or veg and potatoes, 2 pints of jail ail helped to wash down the food and we both manged a sweet as well, good to see the pub on a busier night with the skittles team playing the team from the Foresters in Dunster as always a wonderful meal and great expereince

Nice traditional family pub offering Somerset hospitality in a seeming backwater on the historic old Mineral Line.

Dropped in on one of our hikes, not disappointed- food was very good and the range of beer on offer was well received.

We had seen this pub on trip advisor and planned to stop here after a 4 hour journey and we just made last orders for lunchtime. The staff were very accommodating, I had a very tasty lasagne which came with a good size portion of chips and a side salad, they pour the dressing on over the salad sadly not on the side if you are not a fan. My 3 friends had ham, egg and chips which they said was delicious. The ham was good quality. Very good thank you.

Totally recommend this pub. Excellent service with friendly staff. A large choice of meals all at good prices and I have never been disappointed with the quality. Plus a great atmosphere.

Offered 2 rooms, the only ones available - we initially took both, but the one newly decorated room was so full of chemical fumes from the just laid new carpet, neither of us could have slept well, we had to give it up and both stayed in a small, darkish damp unmodernised twin bed room with tiny beds and mattresses where springs dug into our backs! Not a wink of sleep all night and bad backs in the morning. Adding insult to injury they then charged us £80 for it!

Out in the middle of nowhere, you come across an attractive but unimposing building. There's good parking, so you pop in for a drink and possibly for a snack. It's quite dark in here, but comfortable. It's quite busy, but not noisy - a pleasant ambiance. Visited here on the first evening of our holiday in the area, the booking having been suggested/made by the owners of our accommodation...and we were not disappointed!An extensive menu of both ‘main’ dishes and regular bar-type fayre gives plenty of choice; including gluten-free options. The halloumi was cooked just right and the lasagne very tasty. Portion sizes are generous and all washed down with some great local ales.Friendly staff just made the complete package - highly recommended.

Avoid the duck stir fry from the 'specials' board (it was nothing of the sort) and anything from the 'sizzling' board-- you'll be disappointed with the food and value for money. Staff were friendly and beer was well kept which salvaged an otherwise disappointing visit.

Beautiful little place with a river running by. Small play area and enclosed garden would have been lovely in the sunshine...but was raining when we visited!

We have been staying the village and as only driver, it was great to have excellent food, booze and service on the doorstep.

I think a few minor tweaks could make this a really special place. It’s quite dark inside; dark wood and they could do with some really warm cosy lighting, perhaps some candles. Instead, when we went in March 2019, it had really bright energy bulbs in all the lighting fixtures. I know to some that might not seem like a big deal, but food and drink aside, for me at least, the ambience is also important. We had to leave as the lights were actually hurting my eyes.

Once again great food and atmosphere. Great host who was courteous even though we were a bit late. Accomodated us all plus a baby and 2 dogs. Great time.

Whilst staying in the village, we are in the pub two nights, enjoying well cooked , straight forward meals. Service was great, staff polite a d helpful, our meals arrived quickly and were generous and well presented. Most mains were about £10 and the local Exmore Ale was well kept and only £3.30 a pint so we felt happy to relax by the huge fire for the evening! We also visited on NYE where the great atmosphere and band made for a good night out . Well worth a visit . In the summer it has a pretty stream you can sit by.

We came here as a group of 16 the other weekend as we were staying nearby. All out meals were delicious, fresh cooked veg and homemade pies. A couple of the children had pre ordered something and it wasn't what they thought, the staff were really good and offered to get them something else, which was very kind.

We visited here as it was local to a cottage we rented. We felt welcome in the pub and the food was pretty decent too. The pub had a dart board and a pool table.

Along with my parents, my wife and our two dogs we had a wonderful experience at the Valient Soldier in 2018, meals were well cooked and well presented and we had a real mixture my father had a steak, I had a stir fry and noodles, my wife had an Exmoor burger and my mother had a steak pie, we shared all with our dogs and washed it all down with a good selection of drinks.

Visited here recently and to be honest it was a bit of a mixed experience. (previous visit much better). It was a lunchtime and we were warmly welcomed by the landlord- no problems there. He was a lovely man- just wish the temperature of the inside had matched. The radiator by our table was tepid when we sat down and stone cold when we left. The building had also just been cleaned using a very pungent clearning fluid- a tad overpowering. The food was good and very generous portions. No problems there at all. Compliments to the chef! The older people in our party had "starters" for mains. What was a little difficult for some of the party was that there are no menus- it's written up on boards at ceiling height. Given that some of our party were very elderly they had difficulty standing, leaning on their walking sticks and then looking up high to read them. (not good for their balance) and there was too much on the menu for the rest of us to help out by remember and "reporting back". So- a bit of a mixed bag. Good food. Good portions and a friendly welcome. But the coolness of the bar, the overpowering smell of disinfectant and the difficulty for some of our party to be able to read the menu safely means that I think we'd think twice about going back again. Perhaps that's actually why I'm writing this review. So much was right- so much was good- but the things that weren't were actually quite important.

My farther and I have visited this pub on a few times now all though the pub has a good menu some times the Quality of the food is a bit .... using the mixed grill as guide .. the sausage is a cheap value sasauge the chop is very small and not much meat the gammon is tough the stake is small... I feel the price is expensive for the quality of meat you recive with this dish . I had the fish pie which was nice haw was accompanied with salad in the summer time salad would be ok but this time of year some nice vegetables would have been better received haw ever the prawn cocktail was very nice and the staff are always friendly and really attentive

We visit here every year when staying at a caravan in Watchet and every year we can't believe how good the food is. Cosy pub with a good range of drinks and always exactly what you seen to want on the menu. The only way they could improve at all is by having the same variety of desserts...but having said that were always too full from the delicious mains

Myself, my husband and 2 friends visited for a meal and just wow!!! The food was just wonderful. The staff were very helpful and I was able to have the pork chop without the honey and mustard glaze, when our meals arrived we were all astounded by the size of our meals. They were huge and everything tasted amazing!! Very good value for money. Thank you we shall be returning soon.

My husband and I plus Shadow our cocker spaniel have just returned from a great overnight stay at this superb little pub, hidden away in the little village of Roadwater. Can thoroughly recommend the food and the accommodation and the welcome we were given was second-to-none. Mike, the landlord is very helpful and friendly and and Richard and I can thoroughly recommend the meals - our compliments to the Chef (I believe his name is Andy). We had stayed on what must have been one of their busiest nights following the local fete in the afternoon but we enjoyed excellent meals on the Saturday evening and a first class breakfast this morning. This pub is in a really lovely setting and Shadow just adored swimming in the little river at the back of the pub. Many thanks to you all at The Valiant Soldier.

Wow, what an amazing hidden gem. It's worth the 12 minutes journey from Watchet town to eat here. Roads were a little squashed but it was quiet and fairly easy. We had fish pie, rib/kebab/chicken combo and roast chicken. Loved everything even the gravy, salad and chucky chips. The portions were good and the plates were cleared - that's a huge credit to the chefs. Highly recommended. I would love to visit again. One advice, they get busy so reserve your table :-)

I had a Tomahawk chop, my wife had homemade fish pie, my son and brother in law, both had homemade lasagna. We all enjoyed a lovely meal, reasonably priced. The cider "Old Rosie" was excellent The staff were friendly and helpful. The pub is off the A39 in the village of Roadwater, in other words off the beaten track.

Great service, great food and a really good location. It may not be on the main road but well worth spending time to find it.

I have to say this is one of the best old fashioned traditional English country pubs my family and I have had the pleasure to visit. I was welcomed by the landlord whom has been at the helm for in excess of 30 years!!! this is not heard of often. In my opinion not often enough either with the big chains trying to muscle them out. I had various discussions with him regarding trip advisor(I am sure you will recall Foster 1-30 Sunday staying at Haven) the food, staff, service, value for money and presentation leave many many others a long way behind. I would also like to thankyou for the directions and yes we did find our way home!. Please continue to do what you are doing and I take my hat off to you sir for an outstanding afternoon. Our daughter chose to return, We enjoyed our Sunday roast, played in the garden with our Grandaughter, weather sunny and warm, We booked in advance as know from before can be very busy so best to do. ON our previous visit daughter found no baby changing facilities. She came back all smiles that this had been rectified by the owners, well done all round and shall be back soon on our next visit. We'll done for making our Sunday so wonderful

Busy pub in the week and good pub grub served with a smile. Good selection of beers as well to make it good value.

Had lunch today generally good atmosphere food was okay but Do Not order the Valiant Combo the ribs and kebab were acceptable but the so say half chicken was truly diabolical. I could not get my knife into the offering as it was ROCK hard. Spoilt the meal for me. Bar staff said they had recently changed their suppliers. This piece of chicken should not have left the chefs kitchen.

We were introduced to this wonderful pub by friends who have being going there for years and spoke very highly of it. We weren't disappointed. The atmosphere in the pub was great - a proper English country pub with lots of locals. A good range of beers and well kept real ales. Our friends has chicken and bacon Caesar salad (huge!), and half a roast chicken. My wife had fish and chips and I had the ham, egg and chips. The ham was excellent but my wife was disappointed with the fish. It was overcooked which meant the fish was too dry and the batter was rather tough and greasy. Notwithstanding the last comment we would certainly recommend this pub to anyone who in the area.

We were staying in a caravan park for the week and decided to look on trip advisor for the best restaurant to take our 88 year old Nanna for lunch. The Valiant Soldier was rated 3rd and decided to go there. It was a 20 minute trip....

Stopped for a family lunch, service and food prompt and excellent, had our 10 month old Granddaughter with us. Only complaint no baby changing facilities so had to make do with a towel on floor! Wouldn't stop us going back again.

Really, I thought they were joking when they brought the courgettes and swedes out, I thought all my dinner had arrived... Good service, homespun food from a maybe over lage menu, but you're certainly not short changed for portion size!

Having recently moved to Minehead, my wife and I called in for Sunday lunch at around 12:45 having heard excellent reports. As we entered we were pleased that there were a few empty tables but noted 'Reserved' on each that we passed by enroute to the bar. Asking if a table was available for lunch were told that all tables were reserved until vacant. Meaning that we would have to wait until those already dining had finished and vacated. Now I quite understand and accept this restaurant protocol but I was very disappointed that there was no effort to check for what times the tables were to be taken from to see if we could use and vacate in time. So we left not only the Valiant Slodier but also empty tables.

Such a welcome as soon as we arrived. Delicious food served promptly and piping hot. Good children's menu in a quiet atmosphere despite it being very busy.

Haven't been here for years but were not disappointed had the roast lamb which was excellent beef was the other option. Everyone enjoyed their meals also kids meals were very good will be coming back.

l decided to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday with the family, a special weekend treat at the heaven caravan park at Watchet , l checked all the local restaurants on trip advisor, the Valiant Soldier ticked most of the boxes, as l wanted to surprise her with a nice family meal, l rang the Valiant soldier about 10 days before and booked a table for our party of 24 , very helpful over the phone , l told the manger l wanted to dress up the table and drop a cake off , this was no problem, he opened the pub a little earlier so we could do this without my wife knowing, we all had starters ,with our meals, they were all delivered together, excellent, not one moan , lots had a sweet too, again spot on , to finish the night off they brought the cake though a light with candles singing happy birthday to my very happy wife . If we are ever in the Area again we will definitely use you again, thank you Mark
