We checked in and the owner stated the DJ would be on until 1/1:30am in the morning which I understand as it’s a pub … got to the room there was mould all in the bathroom and the window was so drafty I was absolutely freezing. 11pm came people were in the beer garden, they may aswell of been in the room with me, so loud and the music shook all the walls. The only thing that was ok was the bedding and towels seemed fresh. I’ve been to a lot of 18-30 hotels abroad and they didn’t even compare to the noise I experienced. It’s such a shame as Richmond is beautiful and the property is so old and could be gorgeous. I do a lot of honest reviews good and bad so please take my advice and stay elsewhere.

Always been a nice pub to visit friends New manager seems to have a terrible attitude towards customers. First visit wine was served in a dirty glass and overpriced for cheap wine. Next occasion bar man said he was tired and didn't know what a pinot was (white wine] Let's hope new customers are given better service in future or this place will go downhill. Such a shame as always was a good place under the right managment

Me and my husband arrived new-years eve afternoon for 1 night. After reading a few reviews we were not expecting a very clean room or nice host, however the room was big and perfect and clean the beds were fresh and very comfy everything you needed was there teas coffees milk biscuits flat screen tv nice fresh white towels, toiletries. Altho our room had a separate shower and toilet room it was only for our own use, so we didn't mind. Clarissa the landlady was very pleasant, nothing was a bother. We wouldn't hesitate to go again and quite looking forward to it. Whoever wrote the previous reviews must be very hard to please, it is as described a very old inn so don't expect anything modern, altho tho disco downstairs lasted untill 2am, and very loud we were told this before we went so we stayed up and joined in. And no we are not young'uns, but aged 75 n 79. But we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, best new year for along time, the pubs and square were fabulous at midnight, looking fwd to another visit, well done

Great location for where you need to be, rooms are basic…very run down ( mould & damp ) but just what you’d expect from an old building; having said that , it was clean, the sheets were fresh, fresh towels, clean bathroom and a comfortable bed. We stayed New Year’s Eve so We were warned about the noise, as we were given room 1 which overlooked the beer garden and they had a dj on till 2am. We returned back to the pub around 10:30pm, to find it overrun with young 18 year olds and bouncing bass music…feeling very sorry for the older couples that were staying there and were sat watching in horror 😂 You couldn’t even get to the bar, and we were left gobsmacked that the dj never even did a countdown! The posts on social media stated free bubbly at midnight….we didn’t even know it was midnight!! A massive anti climax…the dj made an announcement ‘ two minutes to go’ then that was it, the next minute boom boom boom again…no countdown…no auld lang syne and no bubbly! We went to go back to our room to escape to find the door leading to the rooms was jammed and had to be kicked in by the bouncers. We only paid £75 so we weren’t expecting the ritz but if you’re happy having a comfortable nights sleep in the middle of a nightclub , enjoy 😂😂😂

Absolutely filthy place. The bed linen was threadbare and filthy, bathroom had very obviously not been cleaned and stank, towels were cheap and smelled awful. From checking in to leaving - a day earlier than I was meant too I was horrified that this place was even open. Place needs a deep clean after rentokil have exterminated the whole place. Housekeeping needs replacing immediately or go to speck savers. A staff member with red hair was extremely rude, totally unprofessional and wasn’t in the slightest bit interested in my complaints. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS! much better accommodation available in Richmond.

Stayed for 1 night on a Saturday. Did not realise the pub was open until 1pm and had a disco on Friday and Saturdays. That being said we ended up not disturbed by the noise which was very surprising. Staff were very polite and helpful managed to park out the front and the guy behind the bar gave us a parking disc to use. Very much a drinking pub so no food available but plenty of other places to eat all nearby. Room was dated but comfortable with water supplied in the room.

We arrived and the place looked disgusting. We were taken to a room that was Baltic where the heating didn’t work and there was no hot water. The woman at the bar seemed annoyed that we were affected by this. We had no choice but to leave and demand a refund. An added note. Someone had urinated in the toilet and hadn’t flushed. Shameful house keeping.

Came to Richmond earlier in the year, had a lovely stay at another b&b but it was fully booked. So when we saw the Unicorn on booking.com, realised we knew where it was, and how close it was to the market square ,but that is where the good points stop. Firstly when you look on the unicorn website {and on trip advisor} it still states that it is a restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch, and evening dinner this is not so, it serves no food at all. Checked on our paper work, and it did say room only, that needs to be stated on the web sites. We rang the unicorn a few days before we went, and asked about the parking, was told parking was free outside, but that is not true either, you are given a disc by the unicorn, but you but it only covers for 2 hrs, then you need to move the car to a long stay cark park near the cricket ground, which you can pay for 10 hrs from 8am to 6pm, then it is free until 8am the next day, so you need to be up early enough to get back to the car park to get another ticket !!!!! The previous b&b gave you a parking permit which was free for the whole of your stay, they could take a leaf out of their book and provide the same service. The room itself was ok,clean enough, but the bathroom was not the best, the toilet brush was dirty, and the bottom of the shower shower was black with mould, and the shower head was full of lime scale, which was a bit off putting, but that was not the only problem, the water was too hot to stand under, so you could not really shower, we ended up having strip washes at the sink, and washing our hair in the sink. Bumped into the cleaning lady and mentioned, how hot it was, and if we were doing something wrong , she said she would have a look at it, and leave us a note on how to control the temperature , but she never did. We only saw 1 member of staff which was the young lad behind the bar ,who seemed to run it on his own ,but he was a nice lad. On the day we arrived he told us the pub shuts at 9pm!!!! even for residents, the next night he said he will be staying open till midnight, chose to drink in the Talbot pub instead. So no we would not stay here again, when there are other b&bs located near by.

We originally booked a 2 night stay here. On the booking it said above a pub so noise can be expected but that was an understatement to say the least. The room itself was fairly tidy and we could have lived with this. The first problem was the road noise as there was no double glazing. Second problem was other residents who arrived back after a night out at 00:45hrs. Because they had a shared bathroom they were laughing and swearing for around thirtyminutes and we could hear all of this from our room. After almost no sleep due to numerous toilet visits by our neighbours it was time to shower and find breakfast. This didn't happen as the shower was scolding and wouldn't cool down and the water wouldn't flow away from the tray so would have eventually come over. Enough was enough so we tried texing/ringing for help which didn't arrive so had to wait a further two and half hours for a member of staff to turn up as none of them lived on site. Eventually some grumpy youngish chap opened up and after half hour or so of him being grumpy he agreed to refunding the £100 for our second night so we were free to escape! We will never ever stay here again and if anyone reading this has half a brain cell I suggest you don't either until some major improvements have been made.

Arrived at around 2pm beautiful pub very quiet, lovely outdoor seating. We went to the room looked nice on appearance. Room was extremely warm. We then went out and came back about 6 to get showered for our evening meal. This is the point it all went down. Ee arrived bacl to our room door opened wide open... nothing seem to have been took. By time my partner had finished his shower the floor was drenched due to the door being broken also had to hold shower head as fitting was lose and kept smacking him on the head. The toilet seat was also broken which we informed staff. We went out t enjoy our meal arrived back at around 10 it was so hot in the room we had to open window to let air in to be greeted to cheering clapping shouting from right outside window, we realised we had stayed in a pub we will just go for a late night walk and come back. We arrived back at 11 shut the window but the noise was still horrific, the language and topics (bodyparts) being mentioned outside was vile. It finally stopped around 2 for then continuous doors slamming around the building. Every time my partner lifted up of the bed i nearly fell of side as the matress was so weak and the undersheet was disgraceful hardly covering the bed. No sheet offered just extremely thick winter duvet. (Sheets were lovely and soft!!!) We woke afterthe worst few hours sleep around 7 and decided we were just leaving I've stayed in richmond several time and worst stay yet. We then go to make coffees to find when we poured in the milk was lumpy due to being out of date. So just left. I understand we came to a pub but we surely should of been advised on the room volume or provideo with a fan. Also the door and the gate are left open all night not very safe. Also I've called and emailed and no reply!

We booked to stay for three nights at The Unicorn and had a warm welcome from the lady behind the pub bar when we arrived. Just a word of warning; this place is not suitable for customers who have any kind of mobility issues. Due to the age of the building, there are steeps steps to access the rooms and there is not lift. Despite that, the room was very nice and quite spacious, though the bathroom shower cubicle may be the smallest I have ever come across. The room had a spacious wardrobe, tv and tea and coffee making facilities and complimentary toiletries in the bathroom. There were lots of books, games and dvds that guests could make use of while in there rooms. Our room overlooked the entrance to the rear beer garden and was directly above the cooling fans for the beer cellar, so was slightly noisy at night, but not too bad.Our stay was on a room only basis and as far as I'm aware, no food was available at The Unicorn at any time, though it was set up as a pub/restaurant.There is a pool table and two TVs in the bar area and the locals are very friendly and welcoming. As there was no food, i can only give a rating for the bar service (below)

We must have caught The Unicorn on a off night or the boss just forgot to do the shopping as hardly anything from the menu was available. Only two starters were available and two or three mains. We ended up sharing a bowl of homemade chips for starters with a garlic dip which was pleasant enough. My hubby fhen had fish and chips (last on menu) while ihad steak and chips (again last on menu!). My hubby's fish was the size a whale and he said the batter was light and crispy. My steak was lovely and the mushroom and onion rings were very nice. Our little dog was even allowed in restaurant and lay quietly under the table until the last piece of steak was offered! All in all a pleasant meal but if they miss another trip to shops you might be lucky to get anything!

This is a friendly bustling pub with very nice beer and friendly staff and locals. My wife and I ate here and whilst the food was freshly cooked, plentiful and good value, neither dish was to our taste. I had a chicken curry which was packed with good quality chicken; however it had too much cardamom in and by the end this over-powered the dish and made everything taste bitter. I could still taste the bitterness for the rest of the evening. My wife liked the steak in the pie, but the gravy was not to her taste. Despite this I am sure some people would like both the curry and the pie. I would give The Unicorn another visit as I think it was a nice pub and worth a second chance.

Main course is £7.95 or you could opt for 3 courses for £9.95. We had the Beef and the Belly Pork. Both are served with Yorkshire Pudding, Mashed Potato & Roast Potato's, a separate bowl of veg and also a gravy boat. The food was gorgeous. I have eaten here a few times, so this review includes each meal. On my first outing to the Unicorn Inn I tried the Classic Chicken Burger. The Burger contained the chef's own relish which is the best relish I have tried, Proper thick cut chips, & a freshly cooked Butterflied chicken breast. The burger was cooked to perfection, the salad accompaniment was colourful & the dressing was gorgeous. Definitely value for money as I left very full & struggled to finish my meal.On my second outing I tried the Steak Pie as it was recommended by my boyfriend. It was brilliantly cooked, the steak was tender, & the puff pastry was lovely & flaky. This came accompanied with Garden Peas & there famous thick cut chips. On my 3rd outing I had the curry. This was a lovely homemade curry & came accompanied with perfectly cooked rice & a poppadum. The portion size was just right for me & I managed to finish my meal this time.On my last outing I tried the Club Sandwich. This is a 3 tier sandwich containing chicken, bacon, tomato, salad & honey, wholegrain mayo. The sandwich is definitely the largest sandwich I've ever seen & there is also a sense of excitement amongst the locals when somebody orders one, due to its size. This is accompanied with Chips & Side Salad. The Drinks here are also some of the best in town & I would definitely say that no pub in Richmond can match the Unicorn for their pints & real ale.Overall:Food: Excellent, Price: very Cheap, Seating: There are plenty of options.I will definitely visit again

Great pub food done to a high standard! I had the fish and chips, the fish came in the best batter I have had and was a good size. There is a dining area trucked away from the main bar which you do not see when you first enter which gives the choice of a nice quite area to dine in or a bar area where there are 2 large TV's. The menu has all the pub classics on and a few specials so there is plenty of choice. I also had a cracking pint of real ale which round off a enjoyable experience! ill be going back for a Sunday dinner.

Have eaten here a number of times and the food is fantastic! lots of choice and you will not leave here still feeling hungry. They have a separate dining area to the back away from the bar. Also best pint of John Smith's I have had for a long time. They also have a great selection of local real ales. This place is right on the coast to coast walk as you get into Richmond so perfect location.

The location is simply fabulous. At the top of Swaledale with views all around. Set up for walkers - so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Mixing with fellow walkers meant a very sociable stay. Room was good size and comfortable. Restaurant bar and lounge were of high quality and brought a high enjoyable stay. Matt and Dave are great hosts. Thoroughly recommended.

No beer on draught, no food available. The only drink on tap was from yorkshire water. Don't know how the landlord makes a living, rumour is he has funds hidden in a barrel of Wensleydale Gold.

We visited 20th October 2024 for a meal for our sons birthday. We always go for special occassions however the meals were not as good as normal . Myself and daughter In law chose the bottomless Chinese my Husband and son chose trio parmos and my other son chose the Barney rubble mixed grill . Our table was booked for 6.30 we sat for 20 minutes and I had to ask Bar staff if we were to place our order at the bar to which she said I will come to your table . Long story short we waited and waited when the food finally arrived the trio parmos were extreamly dry and very hard unedible really . Very dissapointing experence .
