Ordered 19 cod and chips for the team , it all arrived on time and hot , fantastic service thank you !

The food has gone down-hill in recent weeks. I am unsure what has happened but the packaging has changed, all of our favourite food now comes VERY different. For example then wraps are tightly wrapped with not much substance, the fishcakes and chips are stale, and the sausages have changed to a very processed taste. We used to order weekly but now we will try again in a few months. UPDATE 23/04/2024 This was an old review, i can say that it has improved back to how it used to be, i'm not sure what has changed but good job Trawlies :)

Update 7th March 2024 I Just had a beautiful cod and chips. Lovely traditional batter. Nice fresh fish, Really nice mushy peas and a battered sausage which was the same quality it has been for many years!!!! The service was Great and the food was All cooked to perfection. Thank you Trawlerman for your Consistently Good Food!!! Finally some gluten-free food that tastes great!!!!! Gluten-free Monday and Tuesday is a really nice thing for you to do as a business. My partner has a lot of allergies including gluten!! So thank you very much. I forgot to ask if it was lactose free too but he had some of his lactaid tablets just in case and I Thank you all very much as he was not Sick and bloated at all Beautiful fish and chips Thank you for considering allergies

Great bunch of guys, and very friendly, food was amazing.

Absolutely fantastic chippy. Genuinely up there with some of the nicest takeaway cod & chips I've ever had. I'd recommend the salt & pepper squid as a starter too. Will be our go-to chippy for Saffron Walden - I think the Trawlerman is a real asset for the town. The staff are also very friendly, there is a nice ambiance about the place.

This chippy is a true jewel in Saffron Waldens crown, I went there for the first time tonight, the service was sublime, so many happy beautiful smiles from the gorgeous staff, they was helpful and so funny! The food was banging and the plaice (see what I did there lol) was absolutely spotlessly clean, it's by far the best chip shop I have ever been in, it was recommended to us by the Costa girl and she was soooo right it was by far the best food ever xxxxxxxxxx highly recommended

Over the years, the whole place, the food, the consistency has built up to being by far the best chip shop I've ever been to. Even on Friday nights, they stay consistent and prove to be the best chippy in walden, arguably the whole of southern England. They're pretty good

Ordered hallomi and double chicken burger. Loved it. If I were to rate both, halloumi tasted better than the chicken.

Had the best fish and chips ever at The Trawlerman in Saffron Walden today! The fish was incredibly crispy, and the flavor was outstanding. Golden chips complemented the dish perfectly. The friendly service added to the overall positive experience. A must-try for fish and chips enthusiasts!

We have always chosen Trawlerman as we know the food will be spot on. The chips are cooked well, not too greasy. Quick delivery. Definitely recommend!

Had a takeaway recently from here. Really disappointed as there was a hair in the food (again, it happened before too) and the lettuce in the burger was brown and slimy. Didn’t bother complaining after the last time and nothing happened. Learned my lesson and won’t order again! Shame as it used to be the best chippy in town (remember the special potatoes?!?), but luckily there are other chip shops that are much nicer.

Best fish and chips in Saffron walden hand down. Ive certainly tried all the others. The trawlerman offers sustainable choices of fish which others do not and the quality and taste (fresh oil) makes a huge difference. Good work guys. keep it up.

Purchased cheesy chips today. They were awful, chips were microwaved yet hard and tasted stale/rubbish. I have never had cheesy chips from any other takeaway where they microwave them to melt the cheese. Just leave the cheese to melt on fresh hot chips. Won’t use this takeaway again as the last few times have been really disappointing and there are plenty of other places locally that offer better food. Pics speak for themselves! I am updating this review to say that I WAS a genuine customer and that your response to my review is laughable, blaming another chip shop Is a low blow and I won’t use your business again in the future.

Ordered a meal with delivery. Over £25 in value. Order arrived - no fish. Phoned to report shortage. 1/2 hour later, fish arrived. Fish cold on arrival Of course by that time, everything else was cold too. Had to heat everything up and it wasn't as nice as it should have been. Very disappointed. I will think twice in future if I use trawlerman. (

Sausage and chips cold/luke warm, tepid.

This stalwart of Walden remains an amazing 'old school chippy' in the heart of town on a quiet back alley (currently canopied with beautiful, colourful umbrellas). They do have some outside seating, and a few seats inside, and on warm summer's days it is a perfect place to sit. Or take away and sit on The Common! The menu is extensive and prices are decent and they do offer meal deals (including an excellent Family Saver box with a large cod, a couple of sausages, chicken and chips). Service is great and you can phone in your order (or order online). We'll be back!

Fast, friendly service and great food. Ordered Haddock and chips twice and saveloy and chips. Fish was freshly cooked, crispy batter with succulent fish. Chips were great too.

Asked a young gentleman in Saffron Walden Waitrose which is the town's best fish and chip shop and the answer was rapid and emphatic. Large haddock and chips for two people was £23 so not a cheap meal but delicious. We sat on a park bench and watched the fun fair. Excellent.

I took my daughter and little granddaughter out for lunch yesterday at this absolutely amazing fish & chip shop. Well the incredibly vast menu of amazing food to choose from literally blew us away. I would 💯 highly recommend paying a visit. We for sure will be back. Must mention the lovely chatty guy with the baseball cap on certainly looked after us and could not fault one thing. Chips are overly greasy. Very little potato in them as well. Just like eating fried grease. Not nice.

Today I had exceptional Large Cod and Chips with a portion of curry sauce (a personal quirk). The batter was crisp and cooked all the way through. I had the meal delivered - it arrived within the time parameters I asked for and was still piping hot. This is a twice a month delivery for me.

Really good quality food every time i visit. Update 1 year later. I think quality has gone down. I may have been unlucky a few times but the chips i have had are not close to where they were. Maybe this is the oil they have to use or some other reason but i am now going everywhere.

Put a savaloy that my boyfriend ordered on MY order of chips which i ordered with vegan nuggets, claim to have options that are vegan friendly but apparently they're fine with cross contamination. Have had to throw most in the bin that were touching it. The chips are so undercooked we've had to put them in the oven for 10 minutes when we got home Tried to call several times but no answer. Really disappointed. Rating could have been salvaged had they answered the phone.

Quick takeaway. Chips were banging sausage in batter was crispy and delicious. Fast and friendly service. Couldn't fault.

Worst piece of fish I have ever had ,will never go there again

Food was good as was the service. The standout thing was when two young lads came in and asked if they had anything for free. The owner put some chips in a box and the boys went away chuffed to bits . Future customers, what goes around comes around they say.

We have used Trawlerman a lot this last month and they have always been great but I hadn't done a review until now. last night we ordered and 2 trays of chips where missing from our order. We called and the problem was dealt with and 2 trays of chips arrived at our house within a matter of minutes..... unbelievable service. The reason we use them so offen is for the AMAZING burgers but the service we received last night was 1st class.

First time ordering and arrived well before the estimated time. Delicious burger and the best chicken wrap I have tried in town. Non-greasy, delicious and fresh food - will be ordering again!

The queue outside is a clue - you are in for a treat! Chips are golden and crisp and the fish is tender and portions are huge. This was just a lucky find for us, but it is now in my list of top chippies.

The Trawlerman is the best chip shop I’ve been to in a very long time and will take a lot of beating. The burgers are to die for and the cod and chips is the best I’ve had. Everything is always fresh every time I go (which is a lot 🤣) and the shop and the staff are very clean which is a big thing for me and most people! I have been buying my fish and chips from Alex ever since he took over the business and the food standards have been consistently way above the competition. I certainly wouldn't go anywhere else for my Friday supper.

The staff are great and so helpful and friendly. Im a vegetarian and work locally so one night after missing dinner I ordered their halloumi burger to be delivered. Delivery was fast and friendly. I later told them how much I enjoyed it but being the animal I am when it comes to food consumed it far too quickly and felt a bit bloated after.. 100% not their fault I just ate it took quick as I was starving. They helpfully advised that the halloumi wrap leaves you feeling fat less bloated 🤗 I’ve had the wrap 3 times since then and they are not wrong. Amazing taste and a less bloated feeling when I devour it it 2minutes 😂 hat off to these guys best chip shop in the area 💕🙌

Whether visitor or local, finding good things in a town make exploration all that more interesting and worthwhile. This a good example. Tucked away in the town centre, this is a well above average fish and chip shop. Not just the usual fried cod and plaice offering - although that is excellent, with light, non-greasy batter - there is also grilled fish, salads and a really tasty Seafood Lover's box. Definitely worth a visit!

I have eaten here since the business was new, and the food has never let me down. I have always enjoyed how friendly the service is, and after turning up to collect my order tonight I’m impressed and happy to see they’re so busy still, the reputation is going far! The chef and the whole team were getting slammed by the orders and you could see the passion in this little team. I know it’s a fish and chip shop, but it’s nice as a customer to see that the people making your food care about doing a good job to themselves and their customers. As another chef it’s good to see the kitchen busy when so many aren’t in work. Thanks for the plaice and scampi! Well done and great job!

Good fish and chips, quick and friendly service, cod always nice and crispy. Minus one star only because four visits in a row I asked for salt and vinegar and didn't get it. Edit: now a fifth time, asked for salt and vinegar on my fish and chips and got neither. Friendly service, good food, surely getting the salt and vinegar right is the easy bit? Minus another star =(
