The Trawler in Wrexham

After years of first class fish and chips from our local The Trawler we visited again yesterday evening with good appetites and great enthusiasm, but were sorely disappointed. Unusually there was no one else there, but it was only 4.30ish so we didn’t think anything of it. Again a warning sign should have been that they, unusually, had both fish and chips ready to serve. Off we zoomed to enjoy our treat … only to find that not only were both the fish and the chips barely lukewarm but cooked in bitter old oil, the sort that leaves an orange stain on the box. If our lift hadn’t have dropped us and left before we started to eat we’d have taken them back. Come on Trawler don’t spoil your years of good service by penny pinching, we won’t be buying any more until we hear from locals things are back to normal!

Had a small chips and curry sauce. Nearly a fiver. Chips were cold, dry and very greasy. This used to be a fab chippy but it's gone down hill. I ended up throwing it in the bin. Even the dog turned his nose up at a chip.

Absolutely the best fish and chips in this area.... and that comes from a Grimsby gal who was raised on the freshest, finest fish in the world!!! The staff are amazing, the food is hot, freshly cooked and tons of it. Absolute value for money. We make sure we go at least once a week taking the trip from Llangollen to Johnstown as there is nowhere nearer that's better. We are 'hooked' (pardon the pun) and will be coming tonight for our tea! Love you guys xxx

This is the best fish and chip shop around. The staff are really bubbly and friendly, the chips always really fresh and I love the way they serve square fillets of fish so the fish is thicker. This is a must do for us. Try it you won’t be disappointed.

Excellent value Fish and chips tasty well cooked filling meal £4.70 for fish £2.20 for the chips . Definitely worth calling in if in the area . Space for three cars outside as situated adjacent to traffic lights . I called on Tuesday at 1930 and shop was still open . Good range of options from a traditional fish bar

so glad we stopped here for fish and chips they were beautiful perfect batter and the chips were chunky first class will be returning.

I last did a review of the Trawler fish&chip shop three years ago and have just seen the reply,my answer to that would be that who in there right mind would sell a fish which was burnt and 3 years on I can still rememeber it well.Tonight we had fish and chips and I have to say it was excellent with a massive portion of chips with an average fish no complaints off me.Well done!

Honestly so good. Best chippy I have ever frequented. No competition just great. Lovely staff too. Not too fatty, just crispy enough and great portion for a decent price.

Called in this evening for sausage and chips and was pleasantly surprised with them. Chips were absolutely perfect! Best I’ve ever had from there. Better than any chips I’ve had from any chippy actually! Sausage was lovely too. A huge improvement on the last few times I’ve called there. Will definitely be returning! I live close to this chippy and I’m very pleased that the quality has gone right up! 😊

Visited Trawler Bar for fish and chip supper for family treat, first takeaway since lockdown! Well organised safe distancing on entering and exiting shop, keeping customers safe. Fish was cooked to perfection as well as the chips. Everyone enjoyed their supper many thanks to Pauline and her staff. 5*

There was two older ladies behind the till and one of them spilt the curry sauce over the paper cup and then she scooped it with her finger and licked her finger. She coughed around 3-4 times without moving away or washing her hand afterwards avoid!!

I absolutely love the chips from here. Always excellent and the staff are really lovely and friendly. Its great value and always delicious. I can't get enough.

Heard a lot of people saying how good it is here so had to visit to see for myself. Was passing by and decided to pop in to grab something for tea. Had Fish and Chips and wasn’t disappointed at all. Not greasy and you certainly get your money’s worth. Fish was cooked perfectly. Staff very friendly and helpful and you always get greeted with a warm welcome. So this is certainly one place We will be visiting.

Go here every Saturday night for our family tea, and has always been spot on...the girls are always friendly and in good spirits too...great chip shop, great staff

Loads of variety and always cooked fresh to order. Very clean and tidy. Staff friendly. 5* food hygiene rated.

Called here for chips and got home to find most of them were black and they were hard, not edible at all, you can tell they have been kept warm for hoursDisgusting!

To be honest The Trawler fish and chip shop is very hit or miss,this afternoon we ordered fish&chips and when we came home we realised we had been given a fish that we could not eat,the fish was so crispy it was unreal,the fish which remained inside tasted terrible,it was like it had been put in the fryer ten times and left on the side,the staff no what they are doing and should not sell something which is not edible,a disgusting trick as fish is not cheap these days.

Called today as a treat takeaway.. I wish I hadn’t bothered. Ordered fish and chips and also ordered large sausage and chips twice..Firstly was told that I could only have small chips with the sausage and chips as more chips needed cooking. This happens so wasn’t too bothered..Got home with the food to treat the family and oh my god. Dreadful food the chips in all 3 bags where either black or had eyes. So lots wasted. One of the sausages was burnt and to top it off the fish was so difficult to cut and the batter just fell off. In my option this was cooked earlier and re-heated.. The basics of a fish and chips shop in is the title if you can’t get this right then you might as well pack up...I will not return to this particular takeaway... very unhappy with the food.......

Popped in on my dinner today and There was a good variety of food and they had on all the specials and a good range in the window. I only had a battered sausage today which was lovely and fresh and full of batter and the specials are really nice and full of meat

Visited Trawler bar at weekend for a teatime takeaway treat (for eight people!). All meals were freshly cooked and were delicious. Even our fussy grandchildren were happy with their meals. We also felt it was great value for money. We'll certainly be going again.

Black chips - Food overly greasy. Chips always covered in black eye bits! Please change potato supplier. Onion rings all batter & very greasy. Wide choice of foods on offer. Some nice some awful. It's a chippy though! Nice chips are essential! Poor quality potatoes don't make nice chips! By the time I've picked out all the bad black bits & green ones out there's very few left. Passing trade & long opening hours keep this place in business in my opinion. It's definitely not the quality of the food. If the standard & quality of food was raised this place would be great as location is great. I live in Johnstown but will go to plas madoc chippy before going to this chippy. Quality of food is much better and chips are perfect

We have visited this chip shop many times in the last 12 months as we live very local,sometimes they will give you a decent portion other times they do not give you enough for a child.Last week we had two good sized fish and a week later we had a fish that looked if it had been on a diet!I think we will just have chips in the future.

I come here every time I am in the area. Everything cooked fresh to order. Usual range of peas, curry and gravy. Parking is tight outside but ample round the corner.

I fancy a charge last week, so I pop into the chippy in Johnstown and order steak and chips with a rich gravy, large portion and meat was very nice

Ok the food is pretty good most of the time but working in the food industry myself I know that sometimes you can't always guarantee 100% quality.

Have been in the past with mixed experiences. These included one where when I asked for well done chips and this was declined on grounds of health and safety.

Went here a month or so ago on the off chance and I ordered fish and chips which was very tasty one of the best I have eaten in Wrexham.

Was looking forward to our fish supper.But I'm afraid it wasn't what we expected.

This fish and chip shop is possibly the worst in our area. In a prime position but the food is truly disgusting. Had horrible food from there last year but decided to give it a second chance this Friday. Both hubbie and I were ill after fish and chips. Fish had clearly been sitting there since lunch time, was a strange grey colour and tough, and the chips were virtually white covered in little bits of burnt fat. Will never go into this place again.

Our favourite chippy , we call here once a week for our friday treat, Lovely friendly staff and delicious food . Try if your passing

We have been visiting family in Johnstown for many years,this is the first time we have stopped here.And it want be the last,the batter on the and the taste of the fish was excellent so were the chips.And theres plenty of choice on the menu,keep it up.
