First visit with our dog for Sunday Lunch. Lovely food, really tasty and dessert were amazing. We sat in the lounge area which is dog friendly, very nice and comfortable. Staff very welcoming. Would highly recommend and can't wait to visit again. Would be great in the summer sitting by the river.

First time visiting the Three Pickerels for ages. Warm welcome for us and the muddy dog. lunch was excellent, both the pie of the day (pork and cider) and the chicken and chorizo kebabs (v generous portions. Washed down by excellent local (well Norfolk) beer (Wolf Ales) and cider. Service was smiley, informative and just right. Thank you, a proper pub lunch after a proper Autumn walk, much appreciated.

It has been more than 20 years since I last had lunch at this restaurant, so was more than happy to eat Sunday Lunch either a family member. I chose the classic Beef Sunday lunch with a dessert 2 courses. I was very impressed with the presentation and the high quality of the Sunday Roast, everything was cooked to perfection, the gravy flavour and consistency was first class. The large low profile white plate was an excellent choice made it so easy to eat from the plate. The quality and quantity was excellent and the beef was cooked to perfection (pink in the middle). We had a table looking over the river, very nice. The dessert Sticky Toffee Pudding with custard was ample portion and very hot in temperature absolutely delicious. Do I have any improvement points, yes just two very small points. 1: Try to have the plate heated to a higher temperature than your normal do, this will keep the delicious food longer warmer on the plate for slower eaters like myself. 2: If possible add some sound proofing in the atrium I felt with a full house very cosy but very loud when everyone is pleasantly chatting the sound bouncing off the ceiling. I highly recommend this high quality restaurant I will be returning very soon within a month, with other family members so they may also enjoy this fine dining at a reasonable price. Based on the restaurant being so good, I can only assume the hotel is equally as good. Sincerely Lester Millard

Went for Sunday lunch, 5 adults and dog. This place was absolutely spot on. Our lunch was three courses of deliciousness, the waitresses couldn’t have been any more helpful, and they made room for our small dog (not in the restaurant) with no fuss. All in all a lovely experience.

Absolutely love coming here, been many times and can never fault it!! My food is always amazing & the staff are always super friendly. I decided to take my dad here for Father’s Day as he hadn’t been since the renovation and he was amazed by it as it’s really beautiful and so different to when he last came. We both loved our food we had three courses which were all really delicious. Before we left we sat by the river with a drink it was a lovely way to spend Father’s Day. Thank you so much!

Food was good but steak overdone (ordered medium, got well done), pepper sauce white, runny and too strong to eat without a single peppercorn in sight. Jus with pork belly greasy and tasteless. Acoustics in dining room are awful, couldn’t hear each other with music playing and other people just talking. Glass screen and doors looking out of restaurant are disgracefully dirty and don’t look as if they have been cleaned for months. Will think twice before revisiting.

Dinner for 6 Saturday evening spoiled by live band singing’The Jam’ type covers. Inappropriate style for restaurant and all conversation stopped even though we were furthest table away, as so loud. As always staff and food excellent but would not eat there if band playing.

This place isn’t a huge distance from where we live and we were fairly regular diners at the Anchor Sutton Gault before it got taken over and became mediocre, but have never eaten here before. We’re often dubious about riverside pubs in the UK as in our experience many such places seem to feel they don’t have to try too hard due to the location, but that is absolutely not the case here. I believe from other reviews they refurbished here last year and have done a lovely job, yes the waterside ‘conservatory’ got a bit noisy in the enclosed space when about 2/3 full but that didn’t diminish our enjoyment at all. The telephone call to book and the welcome on arrival were both warm and friendly, service was efficient and the food was very good. I only got to taste my wife’s chips as my main didn’t have them and I was invited to do so to show me what I was missing, even though the mash with my main was lovely. Not sure if they were absolutely the best chips I’ve ever had in a restaurant but they were right up there. Our first meal here won’t be the last.

Unsurprisingly, the Fens aren’t awash with decent restaurants, so finding this place is a welcome addition to my list of places to eat in the flatlands between Cambridge and the Wash. Saturday lunchtime for two in a busy restaurant. Arrived early and had a drink in the bar before heading into the restaurant proper (in reality a room running along the side of the pub overlooking the New Bedford River). The menu (others have shared the details) is neither huge nor particularly ambitious - pies, sausage and mash, fish, vegetarian options - but everything we tried very much hit the mark. English standards well made and a particular thumbs up for the scotch egg and the lovely individual cheesecake. The whole place feels very new and there’s clearly been a lot of investment to make sure the venue was just so. If I were to be critical, I’d say the waiting staff were a little slow but they were apologetic about any delays (not that it mattered because the company was delightful), explaining they were much busier than usual. Lunch for two with a couple of drinks each: £90 Would definitely recommend.

On our stay (see review on https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g13821327-d1930438-Reviews-The_Three_Pickerels-Mepal_Cambridgeshire_England.html) we had an evening meal twice and breakfast one day. The setting would be good in the warmer weather - in February it was dark when we ate and outside wasn’t an option. The food was ok but nothing special. The steak was not rare as requested more medium and the peppercorn sauce very strong - that was the opinion of someone who likes peppercorn sauce/strong flavours. The sausage and mash was a good size portion. The chef seems to like chorizo. Breakfast was as you would expect. The granola was a bit sweet for our taste. Coffee came in a cafetière. Service when they were busy was a bit hit and miss.

Incredible lunch with friends. we have been meaning to visit for so long but finally got around to it for my birthday lunch and we will definitely be back! We shared 3 starters, Crispy pork belly, sweet-chilli prawns and Goars cheese and beetroot bruschetta. All were deliciously tasty and home made, even the sweet chilli sauce I think. For a mains we had 2 of the seabass (which is a favourite of mine and not that I choose often . . . this was one of the best I've had - tasty and beautifully cooked.) also one ham egg and chips and a chicken and chorizo flat-bread. we were all really happy with our meals and our desserts were equally fab. We sat in a lovely glass-fronted room overlooking the river, staff were just lovely and our husbands appreciated the beer choice. One not to be missed! Very happy to recommend - and we can't wait to try the Sunday roasts here soon.

Pre booked table 8 on a Saturday night. Food was good (I had a burger, the tuna salad looked lovely!) and came out pretty quick considering how packed the place was. Cost was ok. I thought the service was excellent - well done to the team. There was an ABBA tribute on which sounded quite good. I guess that's why they were pretty busy. My only issue was that we were sat in the new restaurant. Even when the act wasn't playing, we found it really hard to hear what others were saying. It might be the acoustics of the room but interesting that I can see it's been mentioned previously. Lovely setting and we would definitely come again

First time visit to the totally revamped Pickerals and it's very smart with lovely river view seating inside and out. We sat by the glass window watching life on the river, the food was mostly very good (lamb needed a bit of a zing - rhubarb and custard tart excellent), staff friendly but as the room got busier it got very noisy which made quiet conversation very difficult - bare walls, stone and glass make for terrible acoustics. Do book, even if you are going mid week - we made that misake.

We regularly go past the turning to Mepal, on our way from Ely to Chatteris. But until recently it was one of those villages that I know by name but never expect to visit. Then someone whose judgment we trust recommended The Three Pickerels for a Sunday lunch, and we decided to give it a whirl. We're glad we did because it was one of the best roasts that we've had locally for a long time. Decent portions of properly cooked, tender meat, with a tasty selection of vegetables. I don't normally go for a starter with a Sunday roast, but I'm glad I did because the pork belly was delicious. Good choice of wines by the glass plus the usual beers, etc. Service was very friendly and efficient even though they were pretty busy.

Great service fro attentive friendly staff, clean dining areas with riverside views both inside a glass walled area and outside. After hearing the adverts on local radio we thought we would go for dinner. The menu was limted and lacking in any pub favourites. The calamari starter was really nice. Our 16 yesr old had the garlic prawns but said he couldn't taste any garlic just oil.The beef ragu was nice but was lacking in any sauce and so it was a bit dry snd the pasta was only just al dente. I didn't finish it. My husband had the steak and had a piece of fatty gristle that he couldn't eat or even cut with the steak knife. The chocolate tart looked lovely but the pastry case was rock hard. My sticky toffee pudding was really lovely and for me was the best bit of the meal. We won't be rushing back unfortunately.

We have visited this pub many times and have always been served excellent food, and yesterday was no exception, very pleasant riverside surroundings with very helpful pleasant staff! My only criticism would be, if you serve a selection of gins (which is excellent!), which they do, and there is an excellent kitchen on site (which would probably use the fruit anyway!) why not serve the appropriate fruit accompaniments with the gin, even if the fruit is frozen and used as ice cubes and taken out of the freezer as and when required!Otherwise the pub is excellent, clean, tidy, beautifully clean toilets and definately worth a visit!

The Three Pickerels is our local, and we have gone there more frequently since the refurb and Mediterranian menu. We often bring visiting friends. We always call ahead to be sure they are in fact serving, as sometimes we have driven there to find they are not doing food. The vegetarian options on the menu are very good, and we have liked everything we have tried. Unfortunately the service can be variable. Typically the service is great, but there is at least one server who at best is a bit unattentive and at worst is downright rude to customers. It's such a shame as the pub has so much going for it and in a beautiful location. You can sit outside on the riversideand enjoy the view, it is pleasant on a summer evening!I have rated it a 4 because when all goes well it is really topnotch.

Came up for a couple of drinks with our friends Saturday evening, lovely atmosphere all night. Even though it was an extremely busy night for one bar maid she copes very well with the amount of people there. She was extremely polite when serving our drinks. Unfortunately our night was ruined by what I’m guessing was the landlady who came down very aggressive and ordered us to all get out using foul language. In all my years of drinking at different establishments around the county I have never seen such poor customer service, which is a shame because it’s a lovely little river side pub and we had no problems till that scene.

We pre booked a Christmas meal for us and our friends after seeing it advertised. On our arrival we were shown to our table by Jackie and Jess who looked after us all night and was offered a free hot mulled wine or warm winter pimms, which was a nice touch. Our table was decorated with Christmassy bits including crackers and in the background some low level Christmas tunes playing. Our dinner consisted of starter, main ( Trad Xmas Dinner) and pudding which we pre booked (but there was also alternatives if required ) all for £23 per person. Our meal came out promptly and was excellent we asked for more gravy which came out with no questions asked and after the meal we all commented on that we felt that it was great value for money. Jackie and Jess continued to ensure all was ok and kept bringing out the drinks as we ordered. The pub has a lovely feeling to it and we felt very comfortable here and we were informed that it had recently been redecorated by Emily the owner of the pub. I went to the Three Pickerels with my wife and stepmother on Saturday 21st November for an unplanned lunch. I think that they must have a new (ish?) chef as the food was the best I've had at this pub. I had the soup to start with which was thick and tasty. Next I had the cheese burger which I don't eat that often. The burger was one of the best I have ever eaten and was perfectly cooked. Considering how thick it was, it was a good colour on both the outside and inside. The chips were great ('proper' chips, not French fries) and the bun was also good. My wife and stepmother had equally good meals and for dessert we had spotted dick with custard. (Memories of school days!!). We were very pleasantly surprised how good the food was as our previous experiences have not been that good. I very rarely give a tip for pub meals but I did this time. It was well deserved and we will definitely be visiting again.

Not being familiar with the area we wanted somewhere to have lunch after visiting a local attraction, and thought The Three Pickerels looked like it would fit the bill. Situated next to The Bedford River it's an ideal location for al fresco dining, weather permitting. It being October, we sat inside next to a window, and ordered our food. Fairly typical pub/bar food on the menu, sandwiches, ploughmans, hamburgers etc. We chose items from the specials board, a steak and cheeseburger and fishcakes from the regular menu. I have no problem with a limited menu, after all it was a small establishment and no one expects an extensive menu, but I do expect what's on offer to be exceptionally well cooked and good quality. None of ours were I'm afraid. My cheeseburger could have bought from a local frozen food retailer, it certainly wasn't home made and juicy. The fishcakes were overcooked and the steak gristly. To add insult to injury the excuse for salad that garnished the plates was limp and way past its best. Had we not been pushed for time and just passing through, we would definitely have made our feelings known at the time. Funnily enough as we were eating , three people on a nearby table stopped to ask us how the food was. They were locals from Mepal who had eaten several times at The Three Pickerels and said that every time it had been just average. Shame. This has potential to be a great place to eat by the river but it's missing a trick at the moment. We won't be back.

Revisited this "Pub" from our memory of same in 1972. Has been updated and modernized but still found a dart board!!! Added deck along the water was a treat and sandwiches were delicious. Friendly bartender.

Stopped at this pub (we had a picnic there 45 years ago), and enjoyed chatting with our barman, as well as had a lovely lunch. The sandwich and soup were delicious. England has better bread than the U. S. ! If you are in their neighborhood, don't miss it. Sit on the deck and watch the water go by. Delightful!

Have just had an enjoyable meal with family at this pub/resturant.It is well positioned overlooking the river & being a reasonably warm sunny evening,we we able to dine outside. The menu was brief but adequate & was served by a very enthusiastic newly appointed barman/waiter. The only criticism would be, that the front entrance, was lacking in 'kerb appeal. However, I would most certainly 're visit if in the area again.

We stopped for a quick lunch at this lovely "off the beaten track" pub in Mepal. Lovely location on and we were lucky enough to visit on a gorgeous day so enjoyed sitting out on the ample decking overlooking the river. The pub served normal "pub grub" but we had the best sandwiches tasted for a long time. No fancy bread just the freshest sliced loaf served with some dress Lamb's lettuce on the side with nachos. Will definitely re-visit if we are in the area again.

The food was average and seemed to take far too long to prepare - plus the atmosphere was nowhere near as positive and lively as it has been in the past - making a return visit highly unlikely in the future.

We booked for a meal on the strength of other Trip advisor reviews. We had problems finding the restaurant as it was obscured by people In the bar. We would describe it more like a seating area next to the bar The furnishings were basic, but scrupulously clean, and we were made welcome. The menu was essentially a bar menu with the old pub favourites which was fine as we had only popped out for a meal to save cooking. We both had the steak and ale pie. We had to wait a little while but we both enjoyed It when it arrived. The meat was well cooked, with no fat, tender and very tasty. The chips were crisp , and not fatty at all, and the garden peas actually tasted like garden peas! The portions were more than adequate. We only had the main course as we were quite full on finishing the course

Ate here for lunch on Sunday for the first time and had an extremely pleasant and enjoyable visit. Didn't have Sunday roast as wanted something a bit lighter. The food came out hot which was brilliant and it was really tasty and very good. Prices aren't too bad either. Love the location, very peaceful and tranquil. Will definitely visit again! The only thing that is worth doing...is to update the website as it contains some older pictures. Would be good to have some summery photos of the place.

Used to be excellent, but since it’s changed hands the quality has really declined.

Love going to The Yard, service, atmosphere & food is great. You can go just for a coffee to having a full meal with drinks. They have thought of everything from hooks on tables for dog leads to children’s toilet seats built in. The tables are been cleaned constantly and there is no mess or rubbish in sight. I can’t recommend enough. Keep up the great work everyone.

Good location for Newmarket, poor service. The rooms are outside in the car park & are small but clean & modern. Lots of noise potential when busy. Service lacklustre. Expensive for what you get.
